Shawnee Keeps Streak Alive and Claims the SJ Group 3 Title

It was a game that a lot of people wanted to see which team would come away with the win. The Camden Panthers and the Renegades from Shawnee took center stage competing for the South Jersey Group 3 title game played at Eastern High School. Shawnee had the momentum through three quarters and weren't quite able to complete put the game away. The Panthers would rally and tie this game during the fourth quarter with less than a minute and a half remaining. Julian Sanders aggressive play scored the go ahead basket for Shawnee and the number one seeded Renegades would hold off the third seeded Panthers in front of a capacity crowd. Shawnee's 68-62 win extended their winning streak to seventeen games.

Haddonfield Rewards Coach with their SJ Group II Victory

The third seeded Bulldogs from Haddonfield were out to prove that winning their past sectional group titles were not accomplished because of one dominated player. In a rematch of last year's title game, the number one seeded Panthers from Collingswood had successfully overcome an early deficit and led at the break by two points in front of a packed house at Washington Township High School. Haddonfield's second half defense along with their motion-style offense allowed the Bulldogs to outscore Collingswood 38-18. Coach Paul Wiedeman's game plan worked perfectly allowing him to be rewarded with his 200th career victory. Haddonfield would claim their fourth straight group title with their 64-46 win.

Rance Becomes Devils All-Time Scoring Leader but USP Falls in CACC Semis

Shelby Rance became the all-time leading scorer in the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's basketball history yesterday afternoon but the Devils lost a heartbreaker to cross-town rival Philadelphia University 66-64 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference semi-finals at Dominican college in Orangeburg, New York. Rance entered the game with 1,916 career points, trailing all-time leader Leah Shumoski (1,924) by eight. Rance got on the scoreboard with a three point field goal at the 15:32 mark of the first half and added another 'trey' at the 12:08 mark. A third '3-ball' just 43 seconds later and Rance had broken the record. Rance added her third consecutive three-pointer midway through the period and finished the half with 12 points.

Devils Clip Eagles to Advance to CACC Championship Game

Keith Dundas sank four free throws in the final minute as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia held off a late rally by Post University to upset the Eagles 62-55 tonight at Dominican College and advance to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball championship game. The #6 seed Devils improve to 14-14 with the win. Post falls to 17-12. USP will play #5 seed Caldwell College, a 73-64 victor over top seed Philadelphia University for the CACC Championship tomorrow afternoon on Coach Baxter Court at Dominican College. Tip off is at 4:00 p.m. The winner will receive an automatic berth into the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Bloomfield Bedeviled by USP

The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball playoffs opened tonight as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia placed five players in double figures to defeat Bloomfield College 73-63 at the Bobby Morgan Arena. The win improved the Devils record to 19-9 overall as they advance to the semi-finals. Bloomfield falls to 15-12. Shelby Rance and Rashanna Edwards led the Devils with 17 points apiece. Allison Weis added 11 points (all in the second half) and pulled down nine rebounds. Lori Sedina also scored 11 points (7-8 FT) and Erin Chesnavich chipped in 10. Rance also had seven rebounds, six steals and three assists. Edwards recorded a game-high five assists, pulled down six rebounds and was 9-of-10 from the free throw line.

Shawnee Makes All the Right Decisions in Overtime Win

It was a game that most basketball fans love to see when the playoffs begin. Fast breaks, lead changes, the dramatic three pointer and an overtime victory for the underdog. The Lady Renegades from Shawnee traveled to Timber Creek to take on the Chargers during the first round of the South Jersey Group III girls' basketball tournament. Shawnee would dominate the first half and led by fifteen points at halftime. But Timber Creek charged their way back into this game and eventually tied this game forcing an overtime period. Trailing by two, Shawnee's Melissa Chu nailed a three pointer with 11.5 second remaining in the game to give the Renegades a 59-58 lead that they were able to hold onto. The tenth seeded Renegades' upset victory over Timber Creek advances them to the next round against Cumberland.

The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball playoffs opened tonight and the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia wasted no time, jumping out to a 17-2 lead over Holy Family University and made it hold up for a 55-50 win at the Campus Center on Holy Family's campus in northeast Philadelphia. With the win, the sixth-seeded Devils improve to 13-14 overall and advance to the semi-finals of the CACC Tournament. Holy Family, the #3 seed in the tournament drops to 19-9 on the season.

Cherokee Takes a Defensive Stand to Advance

There's something to say about playoff basketball in how the level of competitiveness on the court creates an excitement enjoyable for all fans in attendance. The Cherokee Chiefs were hosting the Lady Indians from Pennsauken during the first round of the South Jersey Group IV girls' basketball tournament. What appeared during the early moments of this game as if the Lady Chiefs would have an easy time against the fifteen seeded Indians, Pennsauken just would not give up and worked their way back into this game at the end of the first quarter. But as this game when on, the second seeded Chiefs' defense set the tone for the rest of this game. Cherokee held their opponent to nine points through the second and third quarters and cruised to a 71-41 victory.

Rance Named to CACC Women's Basketball Honor Roll

University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's Basketball player Shelby Rance was named to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Basketball Weekly Honor Roll for her performance for the week ending February 25, 2007. In two games last week, Rance, a 5'8" senior, averaged 21.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and four steals per game, leading the Devils to a perfect 2-0 week. Opening the week against Georgian Court University, Rance scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down three rebounds. Rance also had two assists, a block and four steals.

Devils Clinch Playoff Spot with win over Felician

Bill Kurtz's four point play broke a 48-48 tie early in the second half as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's basketball team clinched a playoff spot with a 83-73 victory over Felician College this afternoon in Rutherford New Jersey. The Devils finish with a 10-10 record in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games and a 12-14 overall record. Felician finishes the regular season with a 12-15 overall record and a 10-10 conference record. The Devils swept the season series with the Golden Falcons. With win, the Devils clinch a playoff spot and will be seeded either fifth or sixth and will play have a road game against Goldey Beacom College or Holy Family University in the first round of playoffs which begin on Tuesday, February 27, 2007.

Shelby Rance scored 25 points to help lead the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's basketball team to a 72-44 victory over Felician College in their final regular season Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game this afternoon in Rutherford, New Jersey. USP clinches third place in the league standings with the win with a 15-7 league record. The Devils overall record improves to 18-9. The Golden Falcons finish the season with a 2-28 overall record and a 1-21 league mark. USP will face either Goldey Beacom College or Bloomfield College in the quarterfinals of the CACC playoffs on Wednesday night at the Bobby Morgan Arena in Philadelphia.

Rutgers-Camden's Hafiz captures All-NJAC Honorable Mention

Imani Hafiz has long been one of the top track athletes in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, and now the Rutgers University-Camden junior guard has been recognized by the NJAC for her basketball abilities as well. Hafiz captured All-NJAC Honorable Mention when the conference released its women's basketball all-star teams Thursday. The honor capped a fine season for the quick 5-5 guard, who is one of the NCAA Division III national leaders in steals per game. Hafiz collected 108 steals as a junior, the second-highest season mark in program history and three more than she had as a sophomore. Not only is she the only player in program history with a pair of 100-steal seasons, but she also has hiked her career total to 277 steals, second on the Lady Raptors' career list. In her final game of the season, she passed the old second-place mark of 275, held by Jen Hans (1991-95). She will enter her senior season only 68 steals shy of the career mark of 345, set by Tamara Carey from 1991-95.

Solid Shooting Propels Devils to Victory

A 57 percent shooting effort in the first half by the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's basketball team provided the Devils with the impetus to cruise to a 65-48 victory over Georgian Court University tonight in Lakewood, New Jersey. The win improves the Devils record to 17-9 overall and 14-7 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. Georgian Court drops to 5-21 overall and 3-18 in league games. USP maintains their third place position in the league standings as the regular season winds down. The Devils made 16 of 28 shots in the opening 20 minutes (57.1%) and finished the game shooting 52% (26-50, 3-8 3FG) from the field. The Lions made just nine of 29 shots in the first half (31%) and finished the game shooting 32.2% (19-59, 4-10 3FG).

Rutgers-Camden's Francis earns All-NJAC Honorable Mention

Sydney Francis spent only one season playing basketball at Rutgers University-Camden, but the senior forward made quite an impression on the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Francis was recognized for his accomplishments Wednesday, earning All-NJAC Honorable Mention when the conference released its post-season awards. Francis led Rutgers-Camden in scoring (14.2 points per game) and rebounding (8.4 rpg) this season while helping the Scarlet Raptors post a 6-19 record overall and a 2-11 mark in the NJAC. Not only did the Raptors' six wins double their total of the previous two seasons combined, but it was the most victories in one year for Rutgers-Camden since the 2002-03 team went 8-17. The two conference wins were the Raptors' only two NJAC victories since the 2003-04 team finished 2-10 in the conference.

Senior forward Sydney Francis closes his collegiate career with his fourth Raptor of the Week honor this season after collecting a double-double in both of his final two games. He finished the season with a bang, notching a career-high 31 points and adding a game-high 12 rebounds in a win over Kean University Feb. 17. Earlier in the week he had 12 points and 11 rebounds against The College of New Jersey (Feb. 15). Francis finished his senior season with eight double-doubles, while leading the team in both scoring (14.2 ppg) and rebounding (8.4 rpg). He also captured Raptor of the Week honors on Nov. 20, Dec. 4 and Jan. 22.

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's basketball team rallied from a six point deficit in regulation to force overtime tonight against the University of Bridgeport only to run out of gas in the second extra period as the Purple Knights handed the Devils an 82-71 non-conference loss at the Bobby Morgan Arena in Philadelphia. The Devils fall to 11-14 with the loss. Bridgeport improves to 18-7. Eric Cangelosi led the Devils with 16 points before fouling out in regulation. Collin Harrington had 14 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds while Keith Dundas added 13 points and four assists.

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia is ranked in the NCAA Division II Northeast Region Women's Basketball Poll for the second consecutive week. The Devils are ranked tenth in this week's poll, the same position as last week. USP entered the poll for the first time this season last week. As of the start of this week, the Devils had a 15-8 record against Division II opponents and a 13-7 record against Division II opponents within the region.

The frontcourt duo of Allison Weiss and Erin Chesnavich combined for 21 points in the second half as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's basketball team defeated Dominican College 59-52 at the Hennessy Center in Orangeburg, New York this afternoon. The win improves the Devils to 16-8 overall and 13-6 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games and snaps Dominican's eight-game winning streak. The Chargers fall to 16-7 overall and 12-6 in league play. Weiss led the Devils with 16 points (6-10 FG, 4-4 FT) and eight rebounds. Chesnavich and Shelby Rance each added 13 points with Chesnavich getting 11 of them in the second half. Both Rance and Chesnavich pulled down seven rebounds. Rashanna Edwards and Lori Sedina paced the Devils with three assists apiece. Rance and Edwards also had three steals each.

William Kurtz and Howard Lanier led the Devils with 14 points apiece. Collin Harrington recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Eric Cangelosi chipped in 11. Senior forward Lauren Byrne scored 14 points to lead four Rowan University women's basketball players in double figures as the Profs topped Rutgers University-Camden, 77-56, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Wednesday night. Rowan improves to 9-13 overall and 2-8 in the NJAC, snapping a five-game losing streak. Rutgers-Camden falls to 8-14 and 2-9 with its third straight loss. Rowan took an early lead and never trailed, with the teams being tied only once at 2-2. Byrne scored the first six points of the game for the Profs, on her way to eight at halftime. She tied for team-high honors at the half with freshman guard Danielle Rohe.

Baker Scores 25 to Pace Rowan Past Rutgers-Camden

Rowan University senior guard Thomas Baker, the leading scorer in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, scored a game-high 25 points to power the Profs past Rutgers University-Camden, 85-65, in a NJAC game here Wednesday night. Baker, who was named the NJAC Player of the Week on Monday, collected 14 of his points in the first half as the Profs built a 46-30 lead and raced to their fourth straight victory. Rowan improves to 17-5 overall and 6-4 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Camden, which has lost seven straight games, falls to 5-18 overall and 1-10 in the NJAC. Rowan has won its last 10 games against Rutgers-Camden, including a 70-60 victory in Glassboro Jan. 10, and has captured 35 of the last 36 games in the all-time series. The Profs lead the series, 77-27.

Kurtz Breaks Three-Point Record as Devils Fall to Deacons

William Kurtz became the Devils' all-time leader in three-point field goals tonight as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's basketball team lost to Bloomfield College 76-67 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game at the Bobby Morgan Arena in Philadelphia. Kurtz entered the game with 251 career three-point field goals, two behind all time leader Joe Miller's 253. Miller played form 1991-1995. Bill took little time in tying the record, getting two 'trey's in the first 3:13 of the game. However it wasn't until the 13:03 mark of the second half, when Kurtz took a pass from Eric Cangelosi and buried a 20 foot jumper from the left side to break the mark with his 254th career three-point field goal. Kurtz added another 'trey' in the final minute to give him four on the night and 255 for his career.

Timber Creek Puts It Together During Second Half

There has to be something said about a team who has loss their star player due to an injury right before the upcoming state's basketball tournament. The Lions from Cherry Hill West would have to find other ways of putting points on the scoreboard after senior guard Ian Davis broke his right hand last week. After losing their first meeting to Timber Creek about a month ago, Cherry Hill West would jump out to a six point halftime lead in front of their hometown fans. Both teams struggled to convert on their scoring chances during the first half, but it would be the Chargers who would start the third quarter and take their first lead of the game. That momentum would be enough for Timber Creek to come away with a 43-40 victory.

Devils Bounce Back to Defeat Eagles

Coming off of Thursday night's loss to Goldey Beacom College, the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's basketball team rebounded with a road victory of Post University, 68-54 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game at the Drubner Center in Waterbury, Connecticut. With the win, the Devils improve to 14-7 overall and 11-5 in league games. Post falls to 5-16 overall and 5-11 in league games. The Devils placed three players in double figures, led by Shelby Rance's 14 points (6-6 FT). Autumn Tully came off the bench to score 11 points on 4-of-6 (1-3 3FG) shooting from the field while Erin Chesnavich (5-9 FG) had 10 points and nine rebounds. Lori Sedina and Rashanna Edwards paced the Devils with four assists apiece. Edwards also recorded four steals while Sedina had three blocks and six rebounds. Allison Weiss also added nine points and six rebounds.

Camden Catholic's Second Half Run Makes a Statement

Both Washington Township and Camden Catholic's girls' basketball teams were trying to prove which team deserved the respect from the other. The Minutemaids were riding a six game impressive winning streak and they were looking to extend it by one game against the undefeated Lady Irish. It was yet another test that both teams knew they had to past and Camden Catholic would get the higher grade on this day. The Lady Irish quickly erased an early third quarter deficit and dominated the second half. Camden Catholic improved their record to 15-0 with their 76-55 victory over Washington Township.

Lightning Snaps Devils Eight-Game Winning Streak

Goldey Beacom College used a combination of solid shooting and good defense in the second half of last night's game against the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia at America Hall in Wilmington Delaware, as they upended the Devils 63-55, putting an end to USP's eight-game winning streak and tightened up the standings in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. The Devils drop to 13-7 overall and 10-5 in CACC games while Goldey Beacom improves to 13-7 overall and 10-5 in league games. This game, coupled with losses by Bloomfield College and Philadelphia University has produced a five-way tie for second place in the league standings with all four of the aforementioned schools and Dominican College having identical 10-5 records. The Devils still have games remaining with three of the four schools.

Eric Cangelosi scored 17 points in the second half, but it was not nearly enough as the Devils could not overcome their poor first half shooting effort as Goldey Beacom College handed the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia their second consecutive loss, 68-55 last night at America Hall in Wilmington, Delaware. The loss drops the Devils to 10-9 overall and 8-6 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. Goldey Beacom improves to 11-8 overall and 8-5 in league play. USP's loss also tightens the standing as the Devils drop into a three-way tie for fifth place with six conference games remaining. Goldey Beacom moves into a tie for third place with Holy Family University.

Ten Devils Named to 2006 CACC Fall Academic Team

Ten University of the Sciences in Philadelphia student-athletes were named to the 2006 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Fall All-Academic Team announced earlier today. To qualify for the honor, recipients must have maintained at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average, participated in a fall CACC championship sport, and been at least a sophomore academically and athletically. The ten Devils were among 131 honorees in six sports from all 12 conference schools. Seven of the ten are repeat selections from last year's team.

Junior guard Imani Hafiz averaged 22.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 6.0 steals during a pair of New Jersey Athletic Conference games last week. Her biggest game came in a 69-60 win over Ramapo Jan. 27 in Camden, when she notched a career-high 26 points, including 10-for-12 from the foul line. She went 7-for-7 from the line in the last three minutes to help the Raptors post the win. She also added seven rebounds, a game-high seven steals and three assists. In a loss at No. 21-ranked Kean on Jan. 24, Hafiz collected a team-high 18 points and eight rebounds, while tying for game-high honors with five steals.

The win, the Devils eighth straight overall and ninth straight in league play improves their record to 13-6 overall and 10-4 in Central Atlantic collegiate Conference games. Caldwell falls to 8-11 overall and 6-8 in league games. This evening's win marked the fourth consecutive game and the fifth in six games that the Devils have held an opponent under 50 points.

Kurtz led all scorers with 25 points. Eric Cangelosi joined him in double figures with 11 points. Collin Harrington had seven points and a game-high seven rebounds coming off the bench for USP. Michael Mullane had a team high four assists.

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's basketball team survived a huge second half run from the Wilmington College Wildcats to earn the fourth win in five games, a 68-57 triumph at the Bobby Morgan Arena in Philadelphia tonight. The win improves the Devils record to 10-7 overall and 8-4 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. Wilmington remains winless on the season, falling to 0-19 overall and 0-11 in league games. With the win, and coupled with Holy Family University's loss tonight, the Devils move into sole possession of third place in the CACC league standings.

The win moves the Devils into a tie for third place with Philadelphia University with identical 9-4 records. Bloomfield College is in second place with a 9-3 league record.

Senior forward Sydney Francis earns his third Raptor of the Week honor this season after helping the men's basketball team snap an 11-game losing streak with a 65-61 win over Rutgers-Newark Jan. 20. It was the Raptors' first New Jersey Athletic Conference win since Jan. 28, 2004, snapping a string of 44 straight conference defeats. Against Newark, Francis notched 14 points, two steals and a game-high eight rebounds. Earlier in the week, in a 65-62 overtime loss to The College of New Jersey, he had a game-high 23 points and a team-high eight rebounds. For the week he averaged 18.5 points and eight rebounds. Francis also won Raptor of the Week honors on November 20 and December 4.

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's basketball team placed three players in double figures as they cruised to their sixth straight win, a 68-48 triumph over Georgian Court University tonight at the Bobby Morgan Arena in Philadelphia. With the win, the Devils improve to 11-6 overall and 8-4 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. USP has now won six straight overall and seven straight conference games. Georgian Court falls to 3-14 overall and 1-11 in league play. Shelby Rance led all scorers with 19 points. Rance connected on seven of 13 shots from the field (1-2 3FG) and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Joining her in double figures were Lori Sedina and Rashanna Edwards. Sedina made six of 11 shots from the field along with a pair of free throws for 14 points. Lori also pulled down six boards, had two assists, two blocks and three steals. Edwards scored 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the field (1-2 3FG) and a pair of free throws. Rashanna also dished out a game-high six assists. Allison Weiss pulled down ten rebounds to lead the Devils.

Erin Chesnavich scored a career-high 21 points and Shelby Rance added 16 as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia crushed the visiting Nyack College Warriors 73-48 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball game at the Bobby Morgan Arena, giving Head Coach Nate Ware his 100th career women's basketball victory. Ware's record at USP is now 100-60 (62.5%). He had previously been the men's basketball coach at Valley Forge Military College (1996-2000)where he was 98-61 over five seasons and the head men's basketball coach at Eastern University (1982-1996) where he compiled a 232-171 record in 14 seasons. Ware is currently USP's all-time winningest women's basketball coach.

Brian Roberts' layup with 27 seconds left was the difference as the Nyack College Warriors pulled out a 60-59 victory over the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball game at the Bobby Morgan Arena in Philadelphia. The loss drops the Devils record 9-7 overall and 7-4 in league play, moving USP into a tie for third place with Holy Family University with identical 7-4 league records. Nyack improves to 4-13 overall and 3-7 in league play. William Kurtz led all scorers with 23 points, making seven three-point field goals for the second consecutive game and the third time in four games. Kurtz was one of four USP players to reach double figures as Howard Lanier (13 points, 4 assists); Eric Cangelosi (10 points); and Keith Dundas (10 points, 4-4 FG) joined him. Dundas paced the Devils with four rebounds.

Junior center Mark Aziz scored on a short baseline jumper with 22 seconds left in overtime and senior guard Brian Halligan blocked a potential game-winning shot in the last seconds as The College of New Jersey outlasted Rutgers University-Camden, 65-62, in New Jersey Athletic Conference men's basketball action here Wednesday night. Rutgers-Camden falls to 4-12 overall and 0-5 in the NJAC with its 11th straight loss. TCNJ improves to 10-8 and 3-3 with its ninth straight win against the Scarlet Raptors. The Lions have won 39 of the last 40 games against Rutgers-Camden and own a 51-9 lead in the all-time series, but this one didn't come easily. With 19 seconds remaining in regulation, the Scarlet Raptors tied the game at 56-56 on a layup by senior guard Dane Nicholson.

Sophomore center Hillary Klimowicz scored 12 points and sophomore guard Alyssa Michella added 10 to lead a balanced attack that powered The College of New Jersey over Rutgers University-Camden, 70-49, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women's basketball game here Wednesday. Rutgers-Camden falls to 6-9 overall and 1-4 in the NJAC, while TCNJ improves to 8-8 and 3-3. The Lions broke to a 5-0 lead and never trailed. They led, 15-6, six minutes into the game behind six points and three rebounds from Klimowicz. By halftime, TCNJ held a commanding 37-20 lead, with Klimowicz and Michella scoring eight points apiece, while freshman center Alexandra Gregorek had six. Junior guard Sara Best had five first-half rebounds for the Lions, who held a 26-21 advantage off the boards in the opening half. Best also added five first-half assists.

William Kurtz's fade-away 23 foot jumper with 23.8 seconds left and the shot clock expiring proved to be the game-winner as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's basketball team recorded a 56-51 victory over the first place Philadelphia University Rams at the A & R Center tonight. The win improves the Devils overall record to 9-6 overall and 7-3 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. The Rams, in suffering their first CACC loss on their home court this season, fell to 13-4 overall and 8-2 in league play. Kurtz led all scorers with 27 points. For the second time in three games, the senior guard sank seven three-point field goals, including the decisive basket as the clock wound down. Eric Cangelosi added 12 points and a team-high six rebounds. Howard Lanier chipped in 10 points and had a game-high four assists. Kurtz also recorded four assists.

The win improves the Devils record to 9-6 overall and 6-4 in league games. The Rams fall to 9-5 overall and 8-3 in league play. The win is also the Devils fifth straight CACC win. Rance's 24 points led all scorers. Rashanna Edwards joined her in double figures with 10 points. Lori Sedina and Allison Weiss added eight each and Hayley Lentz came off the bench to score seven points. Weiss paced the Devils with 11 rebounds, with Rance adding five and Sedina four. Edwards set up the offense for the Devils recording seven assists.

Senior guard Dane Nicholson became the 13th player in Rutgers-Camden men's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point milestone for his career when he notched 19 points at Rowan University Jan. 10. He raised his career total to 1,005 points. He passed the milestone on a three-pointer with 6:06 remaining, giving him 1,002 points. In the game he had six treys and added a career-high six assists. Nicholson also tied for game-high scoring honors with 23 points against Lincoln University Jan. 8. In two games during the week he averaged 21.0 points, five rebounds, four assists and 2.5 steals.

The win is the Devils fourth straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference triumph, improving their league record to 5-4 and their overall record to 8-6. Felician falls to 1-17 overall and 0-10 in league games. Shelby Rance led the Devils with 17 points. Rashanna Edwards and Hayley Lentz added nine points apiece; Davitra Goode had seven and Autumn Tully and Erin Chesnavich added six points each. Lentz also paced the Devils with seven rebounds. Lori Sedina led the Devils with five assists while Edwards and Emily Aponte had four assists each.

Players on the court do their best to ignore all of the predictions and try to concentrate on playing the game. In an Olympic Conference American Division girls' basketball game between Cherry Hill East traveling to Pennsuaken, Vianca Tajeda would help the Lady Cougars determine the outcome of this game with her effort on the court. Tajeda not only sent this game into overtime with a buzzer-beater three pointer, the Cougars would also rally around her and secure a 67-63 double overtime win over Pennsauken.

The Devils improve to 7-6 overall and 3-4 in league play. Dominican falls to 8-4 overall and 4-3 in league play. The Devils placed three players in double figures led by Shelby Rance's 18 points. Allison Weiss added 17 points and nine rebounds, connecting on eight of nine shots from the field while Erin Chesnavich chipped in 10 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Lori Sedina added seven points, all in the second half to go along with five boards, five assists, three blocks and a steal. Rashanna Edwards paced the Devils with eight assists.

Juniors Imani Hafiz and Carmen Oyola both turned in outstanding performances during the week for the Rutgers-Camden women's basketball team. Hafiz collected 44 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists and 12 steals in three games, including game-high points (17) and steals (5) against Juniata Jan. 3, game-high steals (3) against Scranton Jan. 5 and tying for team-high points (17) with Oyola against Goucher Jan. 6. Oyola had a team-high 11 points against Scranton and led the Raptors with 28 points to earn all-tournament honors at the Diversified Classic (Jan. 5-6). In three games for the week, she had 35 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and four steals.

The Washington Township Minutemaids were the underdogs at home against a very good Paul VI squad who has demonstrated their ability to score both inside and outside the three point arch. The Minutemaids would use their emotions to their advantage against the Lady Eagles overcoming an early deficit. Teamwork and a determined Allie Bassetti allowed Washington Township to stay one step ahead of their opponent and come away with an exciting 53-48 win at home.

William Kurtz notched the 1,000th point of his college career as he helped lead the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia to a 64-57 win over Post University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men's basketball game at the Bobby Morgan Arena this afternoon. The win improves the Devils record to 6-5 overall and 5-2 in league play. The Eagles fall to 4-8 overall and 2-3 in league games. Kurtz entered the game seven points shy of the 1,000 mark. The senior guard picked up five points with a three-point field goal and a layup to start off a 15-0 run for the Devils. Kurtz added his second 'trey late in the run at the 7:30 mark to eclipse the 1,000 point plateau and become just the 34th player in school history to record 1,000 points. Kurtz joins teammate Eric Cangelosi, who recorded his 1000th point earlier in the season as just the seventh pair of teammates in the 104-year history of men's basketball at the school to reach the 1000 career point plateau in the same season and the first pair to do so since the 2000-01 season (Sean Gorman, Jason Wood).

Even before the teams stepped out onto the court, you could see the flowers and balloons for the anticipated celebration for Cherokee's Laura Sweeney 1000th point being scored. Sweeney would reach that milestone on her third basket of the game. When the host Lady Indians from Lenape watched that celebration lead to the Chiefs taking a double digit lead into the second quarter, Lenape's defense aggressively began to pressure their opponent and reduced their deficit to four points at halftime. The game would come down to the Lady Indians aggressive play on the boards and two clutch free throws down to stretch. Lenape would extend their winning streak to four games with their 53-50 win over a very tough Cherokee squad.

The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team outscored the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia by 20 points in the second half (48-28) as they overcame a slim halftime deficit to cruise to an easy 75-58 win over the Devils tonight at the Bobby Morgan Arena. The loss drops the Devils record to 5-6 overall. East Stroudsburg improves to 7-2 on the season. Erin Chesnavich led the Devils with 19 points and game-high nine rebounds. Rashanna Edwards chipped in 12 points and dished out a team high four assists. Alyssa Antolick, a transfer from DeSales University and a former Division III WBCA All-American came off the bench to record 22 points to lead all scorers. Jhazmin Brown scored 11 points, while Jackie Yandrisevits pulled down a team high seven rebounds and had a game-high five assists.

The loss drops the Devils to 5-5. East Stroudsburg improves to 8-2 overall. Howard Lanier led all scorers with a career-high 26 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field and 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Eric Cangelosi added 24 points, connecting on 7 of 16 shots from the field and 9 of 15 from the charity stripe. Keith Dundas also recorded a career high, scoring 20 points (9-12 FG, 2-2 FT). Dundas also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. William Kurtz rounded out USP's Devil figure scorers with 11 points.

Chestnut Hill College hung tough with the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in tonight's men's basketball game at the Bobby Morgan Arena, but the Devils proved to be the tougher team, limiting the Griffins to just six points over the final six minutes as they hung on to win 64-53. The win improves the Devils record to 5-4 overall. Chestnut Hill drops to 4-6. USP placed three players in double figures and had six players with eight or more points on the evening. Brendan Rutledge came off the bench to pace the Devils with 13 points on 6-for-7 shooting from the field. Howard Lanier and Collin Harrington added 10 points apiece while Keith Dundas chipped in nine points and pulled down a game-high ten rebounds. William Kurtz and Michael Mullane each had eight points. Kurtz also dished out a game-high seven assists.

The Devils improve to 5-4 overall with the win while the Griffins drop to 4-7. Erin Chesnavich returned to action after missing six games with an ankle injury to lead all scorers with 16 points. Shelby Rance also reached double figures for the Devils with 13 points. Chesnavich and Rance also led the Devils with eight rebounds apiece. Rashanna Edwards chipped in nine points and dished out a game high six assists. USP also got 22 points from their bench including eight from Shay Nelson and six from Hayley Lentz.

It's always nice for a team to start out a new season competitively and that's what Pitman has been doing. Mary Beato and Chayle McFaull has been leading the way in scoring for the Panthers and they would continue helping their team post wins. In their game at home against Overbrook, Pitman jumped out to a double digit lead and never looked back. The Panthers would post a 61-48 victory and extend their winning streak to four games in a row.

Ian Davis' effort down the stretch helped the Lions go ahead for good. The defense would pick up helping West preserve their 68-63 win and advance to the tournament finals against Cherry Hill East.

MaST Charter was a team that has started out the season slowly and knew it would be another test against the Lady Cougars. But for Cherry Hill East, they were also in search of their first win of the season. In a tournament hosted by Cherry Hill East, the Cougars had little problems putting points on the scoreboard against their opponent. Nine East players got their names listed on the scorer’s sheet and an early double-digit lead resulted in an easy 73-28 victory. Vianca Tejada led the Cougars with 21 points.

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia used a 21-3 run at the start of the second half and Keith Dumas hit two free throws with 4.2 seconds left to seal a 73-69 win in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball game tonight in Bloomfield, New Jersey. The Devils record improves to 4-4 overall and 4-2 in league play. Bloomfield falls to 2-7 overall and 0-4 in CACC games. William Kurtz led three Devils in double figures with 20 points. Collin Harrington added 18 points and 12 rebounds while Keith Dundas chipped in 14. Michael Mullane led the Devils with four assists while Harrington added three blocks.

Devils Defense Does in Deacons

Defense played in key role as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia held Bloomfield College to just 26.7% shooting in the second half as overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to defeat the Deacons, 64-53 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball game in Bloomfield, New Jersey tonight. The win improves the Devils record to 4-4 overall and 2-4 in league play. Bloomfield falls to 4-4 overall and 4-2 in league play. Shelby Rance led the Devils with 22 points on 7-for-14 shooting from the field. Lori Sedina added 13 points, connecting on five of eight shots from the field while Allison Weiss added 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Sedina also dished out four assists while Rance recorded three steals and a pair of blocked shots.

Senior forward Karen Carter notched a double-double in her only game of the week to help the Rutgers-Camden women's basketball team head into the semester break on a winning note with a 57-45 victory at the College of Staten Island Dec. 12. Carter collected game-high totals of 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Raptors, aided by 7-for-13 field goal shooting. Senior forward Karen Carter collected a double-double with game-high totals of 17 points and 10 rebounds as Rutgers-Camden defeated the College of Staten Island, 57-45, in a non-conference game Dec. 12 in Staten Island, N.Y. The Lady Raptors held a slim 26-25 halftime lead, but opened up the game in the second half, increasing their margin to as many as 15 points (55-40). The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for Rutgers-Camden, which improved to 4-5 heading into the holiday break.

Junior forward Jennifer Christy collected 34 points, 21 rebounds, three assists, five blocked shots and two steals in three games last week for the Rutgers-Camden women's basketball team. Most impressively, however, is what she did at the foul line, nailing 18 of 20 foul shots, including 6-for-6 against Elizabethtown (Dec. 4) and 2-for-2 against Richard Stockton (Dec. 6). Although she missed her first foul shot of the season against William Paterson (Dec. 9), she recovered to shoot 10-for-12 from the line, including the last eight in a row. The miss ended her season-opening streak of successful foul shots at 19, setting a new program record.

It took a while for the William Paterson University men's basketball team to hit its stride in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday, but when the Pioneers started clicking, they fully resembled a nationally-ranked team. Paterson, ranked No. 12 in the latest d3hoops.com Top 25, overcame an early seven-point deficit, aided by a blistering 29-1 first-half run, and went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 82-35. Its fourth straight win lifts Paterson to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Camden falls to 4-3 overall and 0-2 in the NJAC with its second straight loss. William Paterson has won nine straight games and 36 of the last 37 against Rutgers-Camden. The Scarlet Raptors' lone win in that span was a 69-68 victory in Camden Feb. 6, 2002. The Pioneers now hold a 44-5 lead in the all-time series.

Fast Start Lifts William Paterson over Rutgers-Camden Women

The William Paterson University women's basketball team raced to a 39-16 halftime lead and went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 72-48, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday. The Pioneers, who have won five straight games, improve to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in the NJAC. The Lady Raptors, who have lost four straight, fall to 3-5 and 0-3. After both teams went scoreless for the opening 3:28, Paterson rattled off eight straight points and notched 18 of the first 21 points. The Pioneers held the Raptors scoreless until junior guard Imani Hafiz converted a three-point play 5:43 into the game.

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's basketball team placed five players in double figures and held the Caldwell College Cougars scoreless for a six minute stretch in the second half as they came from behind to defeat the Cougars, 65-52 this afternoon at the Bobby Morgan Arena in Philadelphia. The win improves the Devils record to 3-4 overall and 3-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. The Cougars fall to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in league play. Eric Cangelosi shook off his 1-for-13 shooting performance from two nights ago and led the Devils with 15 points, connecting on five of nine shots from the field and five of eight from the free throw line. Bill Kurtz came off the bench to score 14 points (4-9 3 FG). Collin Harrington added 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Keith Dundas and Howard Lanier each had 10 points for the Devils. Lanier also dished out a game-high six assists.

Mackenzie Lynch scored 44 points as Caldwell College handed the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's basketball team their second consecutive home loss, 82-72 in overtime this afternoon at the Bobby Morgan Arena in Philadelphia. The loss drops the Devils to 3-4 overall and 1-4 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. Caldwell improves to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in league games. Lynch connected on 16 of 22 shots from the field and was a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line to account for her 44 points. She also recorded a double-double, pulling down 22 rebounds. Melissa Freeman and Shannon Coyle added 16 and 11 points respectively. Freeman also recorded a double-double with 13 rebounds.

Cangelosi Named Sam Cozen Small College Player of the Week

University of the Sciences men's basketball player Eric Cangelosi was honored as the Sam Cozen Small College Player of the Week by the Philadelphia Area Small College Coaches Association at their luncheon today at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. Cangelosi, a senior forward, has started all four games for the Devils this year. Over the four games, Eric has scored 76 points (19.0 points per game) while shooting 43.1% from the field (22-for-51). Cangelosi has been the leading scorer for the Devils in each of their four games including a 23-point effort against West Chester University and a 20-point game against Wilmington College.

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's basketball team opened Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play tonight, dropping a hard-fought contest to Wilmington College, 65-58 in New Castle, Delaware. The loss drops the Devils record to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in league play. Wilmington college improves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. Erin Chesnavich paced the Devils with 14 points. Allison Weiss added 12 points while pulling down 11 rebounds. Shelby Rance and Lori Sedina chipped in nine and eight points respectively. Sedina also pulled down seven points while dishing out a team high seven assists. All of Chesnavich's points came in the first half as an ankle injury forced her to the bench for the final 20 minutes of action.

Senior forward Sydney Francis had an outstanding Rutgers-Camden debut as the Scarlet Raptors' basketball team split a pair of games at Alvernia College's Tom Masano/Sheraton Reading Tip-Off Tournament November 17-18. Francis, who was named to the all-tournament team, averaged a double-double with 13.5 points and 11.5 rebounds over the two games. Included in the performance was a 19-point, 11-rebound game against eventual tournament champion Alvernia. It took two games and an amazing comeback for the Rutgers-Camden men's basketball team to match its victory total from last season, hand first-year Head Coach Brian Wischusen his first victory with the Scarlet Raptors and end a 20-game losing streak, which dated back to last November.

University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Head Women's Basketball Coach Nate Ware (Yeadon, PA) was honored at the 2nd annual Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) basketball officials' end of year dinner on Monday night with the 2005-2006 Sportsmanship Award. The award, which is voted on by the CACC women's basketball officials is presented to the CACC head women's basketball that is the most-sportsmanlike on the court during the course of the season. This is the second consecutive year that Ware has been recognized by the CACC women's basketball officials for his sportsmanlike conduct.

Laurel at there home court due to team players missing because of sickness, but still gave them a battle.

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia saw their season come to an end this evening at the NCAA Northeast Regionals as the #1 seed Southern Connecticut State University Owls handed the devils their biggest loss of the year, a 76-43 blowout in New Haven Connecticut. USP, the CACC Tournament champions, close out the season with a 23-8 record. Southern Connecticut improves to 29-3 and will advance to the Northeast Region Semi-finals on Saturday.

The coaches usually can tell at the start of a basketball season when the roster has been finalized on which players have made the team. Only in their second year in the league, LEAP Academy's coach Macro Marcos knew he had a very talented team that had a good chance of making it to the state finals. The Lancers will get their chance to prove their coach right as their 106-75 rout over Bordentown moved them into Group 1 state finals against Bloomfield Tech. Five players finished in double figures for the Lancers.

Haddonfield Pulls It All Together Against Haddon Heights

It was a battle between two familiar opponents competing in the South Jersey Group 2 girls' basketball finals being held at Williamstown High School. The top ranked Lady Garnets from Haddon Heights were hosting the third seeded Bulldogs from Haddonfield and it would be another game to remember. These two teams from the Colonial Conference met twice during the regular season with both teams winning on their home court. This time at a neutral site, the Garnets halftime lead would be quickly erased during the third quarter and Haddonfield would control the game and the lead from that point on. The Lady Bulldogs would capture the Group 2 championship title with their 42-36 come from behind victory.

Even before the opening tip-off took place, this South Jersey Group I title game between the top seeded Lancers from LEAP Academy and the second seeded Blue Devils from Burlington City was a match-up and a test both teams were ready to take on. Burlington City features a guard oriented offense that anyone of them could take control of a game. The Lancers has the convenience of deep bench with players being inserted into the game without losing anything on the court. With the Lancers holding onto a one point lead heading into the final quarter, LEAP Academy would win the battle of the boards with their height and post a 90-83 victory and capture their first title in their brief school year's history.

Rance, a 5'8" junior guard, scored 61 points in three games this week as the Devils swept through the CACC Women's Basketball Tournament to capture their second CACC Championship in three years and earning CACC Tournament Most Valuable Player Honors.

Atlantic City Defeats Lenape and Captures Back-to-Back Championships

It's not easy to win back to back titles and the Vikings from Atlantic City were looking to defeat the Lenape Indians for the South Jersey Group 4 championship. Both teams had worked their way through the bracket that included the Indians knocking off second seeded Shawnee to advance to the finals. The top seeded Vikings would start this game out running and they didn't stop until the final buzzer was sounded. The results for their efforts would be a 58-50 decision over Lenape allowing Atlantic City to repeat has champs.

Burlington City Defeats Riverside and Propels into Finals

It was a challenge third seeded Burlington City was ready to take on. The Blue Devils had the honor to travel to the second seeded Rams from Riverside participating in the semifinals of the S.J. Group 1 bracket. Both teams had players who they have depended on all season long and those players would step up their game in order to advance to the finals. Riverside's David Laury was dominating on the boards and gave the Blue Devils problems all game long. His game high 39 points would not be enough as Mike Morris and Kareem Diggs came up big down during the final quarter. Burlington City would finally pull away from Riverside and post a 73-68 victory over the Rams.

Everything is set, so clear your schedule for one of the most anticipated match-ups in our area. For the first time in their school's history, the Lancers from LEAP Academy advanced to the Group I finals with their 85-70 victory over Salem played at Woodrow Wilson High School. The finals will feature the number one seeded Lancers going up against the high flying Blue Devils from Burlington City who defeated Riverside to advance to the finals that will be held on Tuesday at 7 pm at Clearview. The Lancers would go on a 14-4 run over a two minute period during the second quarter that finally broke this game wide open. Lance James would lead the Lancers in scoring with 25 points.

Leah Shumoski and Shelby Rance combined for 43 points as the University of the Sciences advanced to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball championship game with a 79-68 win over Bloomfield College this afternoon at USP's Bobby Morgan Arena. The win puts the Devils in the CACC Women's Basketball championship game for the third consecutive year. The Devils will again face Holy Family University, a 63-52 winner over Dominican College in today's second semi-final game at USP. USP improves to 22-7 win the win while Bloomfield drops to 20-9.

The way this semifinal round of the South Jersey Group II boys' basketball game started off, you wouldn't have believed that the Bulldogs from Haddonfield would be trailing by double digits during this game. Fourth seeded Panthers from Point Pleasant Boro were able to build an opening quarter lead and stay in front of Haddonfield up until halftime. That's when the top seeded team in the bracket would break this game wide open. Brian Zoubek and Blake Wilson would help Haddonfield post a 72-59 victory and advance to the finals against Collingswood.

The Lady Knights from Sterling have had their share of close games during their run at the South Jersey Group 2 title. No matter how close you come to picking up the victory, what matters is that your team is on the winning side of the game. Sterling had upset the number two seed in this tournament and they were looking to knock off one more from the bracket. Third seeded Haddonfield would not take any chances of being upset by the Knights as they played an aggressive defense through four quarters. That defensive stand would be enough for the Lady Bulldogs to post a 38-29 victory over Sterling and move into the South Jersey Group 2 finals against Haddon Heights.

The race to the group finals just got a bit interesting. On one side of the bracket, the Panthers from Camden had knocked off the number two seed in Highland. When the Spartans from Deptford traveled to Pemberton in search of an upset over the number one seeded team, it would take a sound performance by the so called underdog in this game to come up with the win. Rickie Crews was up for the challenge as he would lead Deptford’s recovery from an early deficit and then regain their lead down to stretch. The Spartans would post a 59-56 victory to knock off the top seed in a South Jersey Group 3 game played at Pemberton.

Camden Keeps on Moving Through Group 3

There's something about attending school on a day when your school is hosting a playoff game. Walking through the hallways, individual conversations take place mostly asking about the game and whether they will in attendance. Highland would be hosting the second round of the South Jersey Group III boys' basketball tournament and the house was packed. The seventh seeded Panthers from Camden would bring their fans to this game looking to upset the second seeded Tartans. Trailing for the majority of this game through three full quarters, the Panthers began to convert on their second chance shots enabling them to propel past Highland. MacArthur Mason scored 17 of his game high points during the fourth quarter and ignited Camden to a 61-50 victory. The Panthers will now travel to Timber Creek during the semi-finals.

Shelby Rance scored a game-high 24 points and Leah Shumoski came within one assist of a triple-double as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia defeated Felician College 67-51 in the quarterfinal round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Women's Basketball Championship tonight at the Bobby Morgan Arena in Philadelphia. USP improves to 21-7 with the win and advances to the semi-finals on Friday, March 3, 2006 at USP. The second-seeded Devils will take on #3 seed Bloomfield College, a 76-54 winner over Caldwell in the first of two women's semi-final games starting at noon.

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men’s basketball team’s season came to an end tonight as the top seeded Bloomfield College Deacons defeated the Devils 101-75 in the quarterfinals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference playoffs in Bloomfield, New Jersey. USP ends their season with a 12-16 record. The Deacons advance to the semi-finals where they will take on #4 seed Nyack College who defeated #5 seed Felician College. Bloomfield improves to 19-8 with the win.

During the first round of the playoffs, teams are rewarded a seeding which allows the highest seed to host a game. Both basketball programs at Moorestown qualified for the group tournament and both were hosting their first round games. First up were the seventh seeded Lady Quakers taking on the Spartans from Deptford who were the tenth seed. Kara Burnham had a strong performance at both ends of the court helping Moorestown control this game down the stretch. The Quakers would move onto the next round of the South Jersey Group III tournament with their 54-40 victory. With the win, Moorestown will travel to Ocean City and take on the second seeded Red Raiders.

Every year, teams are trying to improve and build on their accomplishments from the previous season. For Moorestown, that improvement would include a trip to the playoffs and a home game played in front of their hometown fans. The sixth seeded Quakers were the second game of the night as the girl's basketball team would advance to the next round. The boys would be next as they were competing against the eleventh seeded Dragons from Kingsway. The Dragons would use the third quarter to make this South Jersey Group III first round game very interesting. But the Quakers would be able to keep the winning tradition on this night and advanced to the next round with their 48-41 victory.

When the seedings were announced for the state's basketball tournament, there's always one pairing that has all the implications of a match up that will turn out to being a very close game. Seedings can be deceiving as the home team, Cinnaminson seeded in the eighth position, took over this first round game against Audubon. With a double digit lead in the fourth quarter, the Green Wave would cut into that deficit. The Pirates would be able to withstand Audubon's efforts and regained control of this boys' South Jersey Group II basketball game. Dan Korenyi would lead the Pirates to the 69-53 victory.

A new season began today with the start of the first round of the group basketball playoffs. The sixth seeded Lady Pirates from Cinnaminson were hosting eleventh seeded Pt. Pleasant Boro in a South Jersey Group 2 girls' basketball game. As expected, the level of play is at a higher level knowing what's at stake. Both of these teams would struggle a bit during the first half, but it would be the second half when the game finally began. Cinnaminson would erase a six point deficit and held a one point lead during the final seconds. A desperation three point shot by the Panthers would bounce off the rim and Cinnaminson would advance to the next round with their 49-48 victory. Top seeded Haddonfield will be their next opponent.

Highland Prepares For Playoffs with another Win

This has been a memorable season so far this season for the Tartans from Highland. For the first time in Coach Harold Little's coaching career, the Tartans have compiled a twenty game winning season and have been awarded the second seed in the upcoming South Jersey Group III bracket. Highland had won six of their last seven games and was looking to end the regular season on a winning note. The Tigers from South Plainfield would be their opponent and a slow start didn't faze the Tartans mission. Coach Little rotated his lineup throughout this game and the entire team would be rewarded with a 59-44 win over South Plainfield.

Devils Defeat Tigers to Earn Playoff Berth

Bill Kurtz' three-point basket with 6.3 seconds left lifted the Devils to a 60-59 win over area rival Holy Family University at the Bobby Morgan Arena this afternoon. The win improves the Devils league record to 10-12 with their overall record at 12-15. With Post University, Goldey Beacom College and Dominican College all losing, all four teams including the Devils finished in a four-way tie for the last three playoff berths. When the tie-breakers are applied, Post and Dominican get the 6th and seventh slots respectively and the Devils earned the eighth and final slot by virtue of being Caldwell earlier this season. USP will travel to #1 seed Bloomfield College on Tuesday, February 28, 2006.

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's basketball team had their ten-game winning streak snapped this afternoon as Holy Family University defeated the Devils 51-40 to close out the regular season. The Devils finish the regular season with a 20-7 overall record and a 19-5 record in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. Holy Family finished the regular season at 26-1 overall and a perfect 24-0 in league play.

There's always a plan on how an opponent can be defeat on the basketball court. The coaching staff works on trying to exploit the weakness of a team in an effort to give their team an edge. When the Lady Quakers from Moorestown traveled to Collingswood to take on the Panthers, both teams would be looking to overcome their opponent's game plan. But one team, the Quakers, used the halftime break to execute a defensive plan that kept Collingswood off the scoreboard during the third quarter. From that point on, Moorestown would rally and defeat the Panthers by a 40-35 margin.

Leah Shumoski recorded her 12th double-double while Allison Weiss and Lori Sedina had the hot shooting touch as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia cruised to their tenth straight victory, 70-52 over Caldwell College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball game tonight in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. With the win the Devils improve their record to 20-6 overall and 19-4 in league play. Caldwell falls to 8-18 overall and 8-15 in league play. The Devils reach the 20-win plateau for the third consecutive season with the win. The ten straight wins ties a school record set in 2003-2004, the year they won the CACC championship and participated in the NCAA Northeast Regionals.

Charity Stripe Uncharitable as Devils Fall Again in Overtime

The free throw line, also called "the charity stripe" proved to be uncharitable to the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's basketball teams as the Devils hit less than 60% of their shots from the line, falling to the Caldwell College Cougars in overtime, 71-66 tonight in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The loss, USP's fourth straight, drops the Devils to 11-15 overall and 9-12 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play. Caldwell improves to 17-12 overall and 13-8 in league play.

Raptor of the Week: Megan Rulon

Senior center Megan Rulon ended her brilliant four-year Rutgers-Camden basketball career in style last week. In a victory over New Jersey City University Feb. 15, Rulon collected her third triple-double of the season with 12 points, 14 rebounds and 10 blocked shots. In her final game against William Paterson University Feb. 18, she added 10 points, six rebounds and three more blocks to break the program's single-season record with 136 blocked shots. She finished her career with 1,220 points (sixth on the all-time list), 817 rebounds (fifth) and a school-record 347 blocks, which is the seventh-highest career total in Div. III history. The honor is Rulon's fourth Raptor of the Week this basketball season. She also won the award on November 21, December 12 and January 2.

It would be a week later and with no threat of snow in the forecast, the Olympic-Cape Atlantic Challenge got back on schedule but with a few changes. David Catalana, Executive Director of the Shoot Down Cancer Foundation Inc. and the organizer for this boys' basketball tournament, had a difficult time rescheduling the games in order to complete this tournament. One of the originally scheduled games did take place and that would be the Crusaders from Wildwood Catholic taking on the Eagles from Winslow Township. Wildwood Catholic would use a balanced attack and post a 46-42 win over the Eagles.

It all started with back to back wins against St. Augustine and Middle Township, two teams that previously defeated the Bulldogs from Bridgeton. With their recent success and due to the rescheduling of the Olympic-Cape Atlantic Challenge, Bridgeton was called upon to replace Pleasantville during the sixth annual tournament held this year at Timber Creek. Bridgeton's Lee Frazier would find success during the fourth quarter to keep one step ahead of the Chargers from Timber Creek. Bridgeton would pull out the upset over Timber Creek by defeating the Chargers 66-58 for their third straight victory.

The Lady Blue Devils from Hammonton had another opportunity to pick up another win this season during the girls' basketball Ventnor City Shootout held at the Ventnor Education and Community Complex. Their opponent, the Rams from Gloucester Catholic, had the task of trying to contain Katie Piekielski who had the ability to gain position inside for the easy basket. Hammonton would control the game by staying one step ahead of the Rams at both ends of the court. The Blue Devils would roll onto their 39-29 victory and pick up their thirteenth win of the season.

Our Lady of Mercy Pulls Away at the End

For three full quarters, both the Lady Villagers from Our Lady of Mercy Academy and Oakcrest battled each other on the basketball court and neither team was able to open up a large lead. Back and forth these two teams went taking turns at regaining the lead. Oakcrest's Whitney Walker was a problem for OLMA's defense the entire game, but down the stretch the Villagers' offense would be successful at aggressively attacking the basket. Expanding on their one point lead, OLMA outscored the Falcons by eight to pick up the 55-46 win at the Ventnor City Shootout girls' basketball tournament.

The University of the Sciences men's basketball team came back from a 16-point halftime deficit, took the lead, lost it and forced overtime in this afternoon's contest at Bloomfield College. However the Deacons outscored the Devils 13-9 in the extras stanza to come away with the 101-97 victory and hand the Devils their third straight loss. USP falls to 11-14 overall with the loss and 9-11 in league play. Bloomfield solidifies its hold on first place with the win, improving their record to 16-9 overall and 15-5 in CACC games.

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women’s basketball team survived a late comeback from Bloomfield College to win their ninth straight game, 78-77 this afternoon in Bloomfield, New Jersey. With the win, the Devils clinch the #2 seed in the upcoming Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference playoffs and improve their record to 19-6 overall and 18-4 in league play. USP concluded the road portion of their regular season with an 11-1 record. Bloomfield falls to 17-8 overall and 15-7 in league play.

When the first time Haddon Heights and Haddon Township met a month ago in a Colonial Conference girls' basketball game, the Lady Hawks got off to a very slow start and were unable to recover from that deficit. This time on their home court, Haddon Township jumped out to a two point lead at halftime over the conference leading Lady Garnets from Haddon Heights. The Garnets' defensive pressure took over during the second half to take control of this game. Haddon Heights would extend their winning streak to eight games with their 45-31 victory over the Hawks.

With the upcoming group basketball tournament beginning in about two weeks, there are some teams working on implementing a few new plays in preparation of the beginning of the high school version of March Madness. Two teams from the Burlington County League Freedom Division occurred at Palmyra when the boy's basketball team from Moorestown Friends entered the facilities. With a position already secured in the South Group I bracket, the Panthers' early success at building a lead allowed them to get as many players involved as possible. When Palmyra posted their 68-61 victory, five players finished in double figures.

The Jaguars from Medford Tech traveled to Delran to take on the Bears in a Burlington County Conference basketball game. Both of these teams were looking for a way to put an end to their losing streak. The Jaguars would jump out to a double digit lead through the first half only to watch Delran cut their deficit to two points early in the third quarter. But Medford Tech would respond by matching Delran's intensity and defeat the Bears by a 67-53 score.

Sophomore guard Amir Fantroyal nearly helped the Rutgers-Camden men’s basketball team register a big upset, scoring a career-high 25 points in an 86-78 home loss to Richard Stockton College Feb. 8. Fantroyal went 7-for-13 from the field, including 3-for-6 from three-point range, and hit eight of his 12 foul shots as he passed his previous high of 18 points, accomplished twice. He added six rebounds, four assists and four steals against the Ospreys. In his second game of the week, Fantroyal added 10 points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal in a 95-82 loss at Kean University Feb. 11.

David Catalana, executive director of the Shoot Down Cancer Foundation Inc., has been a very busy person putting together another high school basketball tournament. For the past five years, The Olympic-Cape Challenge has given basketball fans in South Jersey one of the most action packed weekends of high-school basketball of the year. With twenty-eight of the best teams from the two best basketball conferences in South Jersey set to do battle at Timber Creek High School for fourteen great match-ups. With the first two games played resulted in the Cape-Atlantic Conference winning the first game and then the Olympic Conference the next, St. Joseph and Cherry Hill East took center stage. The Wildcats would stay one step ahead of Cherry Hill East and come away with the 58-50 victory. Norm White led St. Joseph's in scoring with 23 points.

It takes the game of basketball to bring out the awareness that help is needed financially for the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia fight against childhood cancers. There was plenty of basketball being played at the Cape-Atlantic Challenge held at Timber Creek to help the "Shoot Down Cancer Foundation, Inc." This year's event featured some very intriguing games including match-ups between several top 20 teams. So when the Red Raiders from Ocean City competed against Camden Catholic, it was an opportunity to attend a high school basketball game for a good cause. A slow start by Ocean City proved to be the difference in their 50-41 defeat to Camden Catholic.

The Chiefs from Cherokee and Middle Township had the opportunity to watch all of or some of the first four games scheduled before them during the day at the Cape-Atlantic Challenge boy's basketball tournament. Hammonton defeated Triton to start the day off and then Pennsauken, St. Joseph and Camden Catholic were the winners of their games. With the Cape Atlantic Conference and Olympic Conference both even at two games apiece, Cherokee would give their conference another win as they defeated the Panthers from Middle Township by a 52-39 margin.

With the threat of a major snow storm on its way, the Paul VI and Atlantic City game would be the last game played in the Cape-Atlantic Challenge on this day. Inside the gymnasium at Timber Creek, this game provided enough entertainment that allowed most to forget about the inclement weather for the moment that was on its way. This tournament has allowed two teams from two conferences to match their talent against one another. The Vikings from Atlantic City have been labeled as one of the top ten teams in South Jersey. Paul VI would watch the Vikings lead at the break only to rally in the second half to send this game into overtime. The Eagles dominated the extra session and posted a 75-66 win over Atlantic City.

The Lightning struck- but it was just a glancing blow as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's basketball team withstood a 73% shooting effort from Goldey Beacom College in the second half to defeat the Lightning, 66-62 this afternoon in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. With the win, the Devils reach the .500 mark for the first time this season with an 11-11 overall record. USP also improves to 9-8 in CACC games and take over sole possession of sixth place in the league standings, just one game out of second place with five conference games remaining. The Devils have now won 11 of their last 15 games. Goldey Beacom falls to 15-8 overall and 10-8 in league play.

With the win, the Devils improve to 16-6 overall and 15-4 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) games. Goldey Beacom drops to 5-17 overall and 5-14 in league play.

It was a playoff game atmosphere before the upcoming state basketball tournament even began. Lenape, already with the Olympic Conference American Division title in hand, traveled to Cherokee in a battle between the two teams leading their division. Both of these teams have secured a position in the state tournament, but this game was about bragging rights. With a pack gymnasium and the Chiefs leading by double digits, the Lenape fans would watch the Indians pull with a point late in the quarter. Cherokee would then end their scoring drought and hold off Lenape and post a 52-49 win.

Glassboro's Second Half Enough to Defeat Gloucester

This game was about two teams heading in two different directions. The Bulldogs from Glassboro has been successful at winning those important games from their division while the Lions from Gloucester have been looking for ways to come away with a win. The way the first half of this Tri-County Conference Classic Division game ended, neither team held an advantage. It wouldn't be until midway through the third quarter that the Bulldogs would begin to slowly pull away. Glassboro would finish off Gloucester by posting a 68-45 victory.

Fresh off of their victory against Camden, Woodrow Wilson would compete against another neighboring team in LEAP Academy. The Lancers were looking to get back to the winning side of a game after being defeated by St. Benedicts this past weekend. The two teams were competing in a non-league that started off with LEAP Academy holding onto a four point lead. Woodrow Wilson would find themselves quickly trailing before the half when the Lancers erupted for twenty-seven second quarter points. That proved to be the difference in this game as LEAP Academy would pick up their fifteenth win of the season when they defeat the Tigers 78-69.

Freshman guard Wayne Smalls had another fine week for the Rutgers-Camden men's basketball team as he raised his scoring average from 18.0 to 18.7 points per game by scoring 50 points in a pair of New Jersey Athletic Conference contests. Smalls scored 20 points against The College of New Jersey Feb. 1, aided by 10-for-11 shooting from the foul line. He added a 30-point performance against Montclair State University Feb. 4, giving him four 30-point games in his first collegiate season. It's the third Raptor of the Week honor for Smalls this year. He also won the honor Jan. 9 and Jan. 23.

Both Willingboro and Woodrow Wilson were having success this season at winning games and both have their stories to tell. When these two teams met at Rancocas Valley participating in the Jeff Coney Memorial Tournament, it was a chance to see two girl's basketball programs from different conferences compete in a non-league game. Tiffany Crews would lead Willingboro this season in scoring average, but this day belonged to Woodrow Wilson's De'ree Fooks and Ashley Baker. Fooks needed six points to record her 1000th point and she would do that and then some. Baker would be named most valuable player during the tournament that the Lady Tigers defeat Willingboro by a 67-45 score.

The Colonial Conference is still up for grabs meaning that every game is extremely important as the regular season winds down. Haddon Heights were amongst the leaders of the conference battling it out with Haddonfield, Sterling, Haddon Township and Collingswood all with a legitimate chance of finishing in first place. Every conference game was important and on this night, the Lady Garnets were playing host to the Green Wave from Audubon. The first quarter found Audubon keeping the game close after the first quarter ended, but the middle two quarters proved to be the difference. Haddon Heights would outscore their opponent 26-9 during those quarters and pull away for the 43-29 victory.

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia rallied from an eight point deficit over the last four minutes of the game to defeat the New Jersey Institute of Technology 59-56 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's basketball game last night at the Fleischer Center in Newark, New Jersey. The win by the Devils improves their record to 13-6 overall and 12-4 in CACC games. NJIT falls to 13-7 overall and 11-6 in league play. With the win, USP Head Coach Nate Ware becomes the Devils all-time leader in wins in the history of the women's basketball program with 80, surpassing Andy McGovern who had 79 wins from 1996-2001. Ware's record now stands at 80-52 (60.6%).

Eric Cangelosi scored a game-high 19 points to lead the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia to a 60-46 victory over host New Jersey Institute of Technology in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men's basketball game last night at the Fleischer Center in Newark, New Jersey. It was a tale of two halves for the division leading Blue Devils from Burlington City. In a Burlington County League Patriot Division basketball game against Cinnaminson, it had appeared as if the Pirates were ready to do all they could to upset the leaders of their division. Knowing the cutoff date to qualify for the upcoming state tournament was less that a week away, Cinnaminson aggressive defense kept them right in this game up until halftime. But Burlington City pulled themselves together behind the success of Mike Morris and took over the second half. The Blue Devils remained undefeated in their division with their 58-45 victory over the Pirates.

Leah Shumoski recorded her fourth consecutive double-double to lead four USP players in double figures as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia defeated the Georgian Court University Lions 75-62 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's basketball game this evening at USP's Bobby Morgan Arena. Shumoski scored 21 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and recorded four assists. Leah entered the game needing just five rebounds to reach 900 for her career and two assists for 250 in her career.

The Lady Foxes from Moorestown Friends were enjoying their longest winning streak of the season at three games. It didn't look as if Moorestown Friends would extend their streak by one as they found themselves trailing after three quarters by six points. Ann Stouffer was successful in her efforts of reducing the Foxes deficits. Moorestown Friends would dominate the final quarter to pull out the come from behind victory at Maple Shade. The Foxes picked up the 44-39 victory over the Lady Wildcats in a non-league girl's basketball game.

Rutgers-Camden freshman center/forward Antoine Miller earns Raptor of the Week honors after a fine performance in a pair of losses last week for the men's basketball team. Miller notched 10 points, four rebounds and one assist in a home defeat against Rowan Jan. 25, including a 6-for-8 performance at the foul line. He then scored a game-high and career-high 25 points, aided by 11-for-12 shooting from the foul line, in a loss at Ramapo College Jan. 28. He also added six rebounds and three assists. For the week, Miller averaged 17.5 points and shot a red-hot 17-for-20 (85 percent) from the foul line.

Leah Shumoski scored 24 points and Mary Beth Christian hit a key basket with 12 seconds left to put the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia ahead by four points as they went on to defeat the Dominican College Chargers, 73-68 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball game this afternoon at the Hennessy Center in Orangeburg, New York. The win improves the Devils record to 11-6 overall and 10-4 in CACC games. Dominican drops to 12-7 overall and 10-4 in league play. Both teams are tied for second place in the league standings with identical 10-4 conference records.

It was a game that both teams had the confidence that they would be the winner of this game. No lead was safe and no deficit was too great to overcome when the Tigers from Woodrow Wilson traveled to Paul VI competing in an Olympic Conference National Division game. The Tigers would lead by a point with 15 seconds remaining in the game only to see Robbie Grant's basket and foul shot with 1.6 seconds remaining in the game push Paul VI's lead by two points. After a timeout, Woodrow Wilson would attempt a desperation shot from will behind the half court line but bounced off the ceiling rafters. Paul VI would extend their winning streak to nine games when they escaped with the 77-75 victory.

With the month of January coming to an end, it serves as a constant reminder that the February cutoff date for teams to have a five hundred record or better in near to qualify for the upcoming state tournament. Two teams from two different groups but having similar goals competed in a Tri-County Conference Royal Division game. The Spartans from Deptford traveled to Clearview in search of picking up a division win, but more importantly stay or move closer to the requirement to qualify for the tournament. Deptford would start with game with a lead and maintain it through four quarters. The Spartans' 73-56 victory would move them one step closer to extending their season into the playoffs.

For the past five years, The Olympic-Cape Challenge has given basketball fans in South Jersey one of the most action packed weekends of high-school basketball of the year. With twenty-eight of the best teams from the two best basketball conferences in South Jersey set to do battle at Timber Creek High School for fourteen great matchups. The challenge format of the event will pit teams from two of the best leagues in the state - The Olympic Conference and the Cape Atlantic League. Among the teams participating will be eleven of the top twenty teams in South Jersey, including some perennial state powerhouses. The listing of teams reads like a "who's who" of New Jersey basketball: St. Augustine Prep, Camden Catholic, Middle Township, Woodrow Wilson, Atlantic City, Winslow Township, Holy Spirit, Shawnee, Egg Harbor Township, Lenape, Pleasantville and many more. As usual, the tournament will feature some of the best individual players and coaches in the state as well.

Ten University of the Sciences in Philadelphia student-athletes were named to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Fall All-Academic Team announced earlier today. To qualify for the honor, recipients must have maintained at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average, participated in a fall CACC championship sport, and been at least a sophomore academically and athletically. The ten Devils were among 111 honorees in six sports from all 13 conference schools. Six of the ten are repeat selections from last year’s team.

For the second time this season, Northern Burlington and Willingboro competed against one another this time on the Greyhounds home court. Willingboro won the first game by ten points, but it’s always harder to play a team twice and expect that the same game plan will work. The Chimeras’ first quarter success pushed Northern Burlington into a deficit they would try to recover from for the remainder of this game. The Greyhounds would outscore Willingboro during the final three quarters, but the Chimeras would hold on to this game and pick up the 55-51 victory.

Rutgers-Camden freshman guard Wayne Smalls earns Raptor of the Week honors for the second time in three weeks after collecting game-high scoring honors in a pair of losses against William Paterson University (19 points, Jan. 18) and Rutgers-Newark (26 points, Jan. 21). In the Paterson game, he also added three rebounds, two assists and tied his career high with four steals. In a narrow 73-70 loss to Newark, he helped the Raptors take an early lead, scoring 18 points as Rutgers-Camden jumped to a 22-9 advantage. He shot 12-for-17, including 2-for-5 from three-point range, and added one rebound, three steals and a team-high three assists. Smalls, who enters this week as a four-time New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, leads the Scarlet Raptors in scoring average (19.3) and foul shooting (.893, 50-for-56).

Carter's heroics helped the Scarlet Raiders improve to 13-4 overall and 6-4 in the NJAC with their fourth consecutive victory. Rutgers-Camden, which has lost 12 straight, dips to 1-15 overall and 0-10 in the NJAC. It was the fifth consecutive victory for the Scarlet Raiders in the all-time series, including an 84-41 win earlier this season in Newark (Dec. 10), giving Rutgers-Newark a 37-31 lead in the all-time series.

It was another chance for the Lancers from LEAP Academy boys' basketball team to show off their skills. The second year program affiliated with Rutgers Camden University rarely gets the opportunity to compete against other high school programs from the South Jersey area. With only three losses in fourteen games played, LEAP would get their chance to see how well they would play against the Crusaders from Bishop Eustace. Quickly the Lancers made themselves right at home and pick up their twelfth win of the season. Four players would finish in double figures as the Lancers would cruise to their 98-64 victory.

The win, USP's fourth straight conference win, improves the Devils overall record to 7-9 and 5-6 in Central atlantic Collegiate Conference play. Nyack falls to 9-6 overall, 8-3 in CACC games. USP is now 7-2 over their last nine games after starting the season 0-7.

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia rebounded from their tough loss at Holy Family Thursday night with a lot of rebounds, 53 of them as they handily defeated Nyack College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's basketball game this afternoon at USP's Morgan Arena. With the win, the Devils improve to 10-5 overall and 9-3 in CACC games. Nyack fell to 2-13 overall and 1-11 in league play. The Devils 53 rebounds were a season high as they outrebounded the Warriors 53-32. 16 of their 52 rebounds were offensive boards, leading to 18 points.

Howard Lanier hit a three-point field goal with 3.8 seconds remaining, breaking a 66-all tie and leading the Devils to a 69-66 upset win over Holy Family University at the Tigers Campus Center this evening. With the win, the Devils improve to 6-9 overall and 4-6 in Central Atlantic Collegiate conference games. USP has now won six of their last eight games overall and four of their last five conference games. Holy Family falls to 10-7 overall and 6-4 in the CACC. Lanier finished the game with a career high 19 points. Howard was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field, including four "treys" and 1-for-1 from the free throw line. The sophomore guard also dished out a team-high five assists.

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's basketball team's comeback effort in the second half fell short as the Holy Family University Tigers handed the Devils their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) road loss of the season, 75-67 tonight at Holy Family's Campus Center. The loss drops the Devils to 9-5 overall and 8-3 in CACC games. Holy Family improved to 13-1 overall and 11-0 in conference play. USP was led by Shelby Rance's 29 points. (9-16 FG, 5-7 3FG; 6-7 FT) Rashanna Edwards added 12 points and a game-high five steals. Edwards and Leah Shumoski also dished out five assists apiece for the Devils. Shumoski also paced USP with eight rebounds.

Whenever teams has been going through a losing streak, the best remedy is to find out what needs to be fixed and get back on the court. When the Garnets from Haddon Heights traveled to Haddon Township, both teams were looking to find a way to come away with the win. The Colonial Conference has several teams that were capable of putting up double digit victories. This game would be a chance to come away with a conference win. Brandon Kersey had success find his range helping Haddon Heights break a halftime tie and built a lead that decided this game. The Garnets would post the 51-43 victory and pick up their first conference win.

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's basketball team came to life in the second half of this evenings contest against Wilmington College as they opened up a big lead and cruised to their seventh straight win, 65-49. The Devils improved to 9-4 overall and 8-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play. Wilmington fell to 2-12 overall, 1-9 in league play. The Devils were led by their dynamic duo of Leah Shumoski and Shelby Rance. Shumoski recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Rance had 16 points, four assists and five steals. Allison Weiss led all rebounders with 11 boards.

There were two teams looking to end two different streaks during the third annual Cougar Classic girls’ basketball tournament held at Cherry Hill East High School. For the Lady Lions from Gloucester City, they were looking to extend their two game winning against Eastern. The Vikings on the other hand were trying to stop a losing streak of two games. The way the second half started, it appeared as if each team would extend their streaks by one game. Appearances can be deceiving especially when a team completely dominates an entire quarter to control a game. Eastern’s eleven point lead heading into the final quarter was enough to hold onto their 59-51 victory over Gloucester.

Rutgers-Camden sophomore guard Imani Hafiz notched her second career double-double in a home loss to Kean University Jan. 14, collecting 10 rebounds and 10 points, while also collecting a game-high six steals and tying for a game-high three assists. Earlier in the week, in a loss at New Jersey City University Jan. 11, Hafiz had nine points, five rebounds and a team-high eight steals. For the season, she leads the Raptors with 65 steals (4.6 per game), a total which already gives her 129 steals in the second year of her career (12th on the all-time list). In the most recent NCAA national stats, when she was averaging 4.3 steals through Jan. 8 games, Hafiz ranked 11th in the country.

There are several obstacles that teams must overcome in order to improve on their accomplishments. The Scotties from Bordentown were participating in their fourth Burlington County League Patriot Division game of the season and Westampton Tech was the next team on their schedule. Bordentown would be looking to extend their winning streak to two games in a row after their loss to division leading Burlington City, a team that continues to stand in their way. The Scotties’ defense took control of this game but their offense would be the reason they won it. Three players finished in double figures as Bordentown posted an 82-38 win over the Panthers.

Rashidat Junaid continues to show off her skills both on offense and defense for the girls' basketball team from Camden Catholic. When the match up with neighboring Bishop Eustace took place on their home court, Junaid did not disappoint her teammates or fans. The Lady Irish would stay a few steps ahead of their Olympic Conference National Division opponents during the entire game. The senior center would control the boards and score 20 points helping Camden Catholic post the 66-50 victory. With the win, the Irish would remain undefeated while Bishop Eustace would pick up their first loss in the division.

Rutgers-Camden freshman guard Wayne Smalls earns his first Raptor of the Week honor after averaging 21.5 points in a pair of games last week and going 15-for-15 from the foul line. He scored 28 of his team-high 31 points in the second half in a loss to Montclair State Jan. 4 as he finished two points shy of his career high. He was 8-for-8 from the foul line in that game and then went 7-for-7 from the line in a loss to Widener Jan. 7. Coupled with his 6-for-6 from the line against Worcester State (Dec. 29), he has hit 21 straight free throws since missing his last attempt against Colorado College (Dec. 28). His 21 straight foul shots ties for second on the program’s list of longest streaks. He is three shy of the school mark of 24 straight by Bill Bramble in 1966.

Seven days into the month of January, LEAP Academy boys' basketball team has been put to the test playing teams from North and South Jersey as well as teams from Philadelphia. The second year program has shown they have the talent to compete on the court and they would get another chance when they visited the undefeated Fighting Irish from Camden Catholic. The Lancers (9-2) would struggle on offense through the first half, but would pick up their scoring during the second half. Camden Catholic's team effort during the first half would be enough to pick up the 66-57 victory and increase their winning streak to eight games and no losses.

Bill Kurtz had 18 points and Collin Harrington recorded a double-double as the University of the Sciences men's basketball team won their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game of the 05-06 season, defeating the Highlanders from New Jersey Institute of Technology, 69-56 at the Bobby Morgan Arena this afternoon. The win improved the Devils record to 3-8 overall and 1-5 in CACC games. NJIT fell to 4-7 overall, 1-5 in CACC games.

Even though most teams have completed just about a third of their schedule, enough games have been played in order to see which schools are playing up to their preseason expectations. There are still those teams looking to gain respect have established themselves as dominating teams that could come away with the win. For the Tigers from Woodrow Wilson traveling to take a ranked Camden Catholic team, a productive fourth quarter surge would send this game into overtime. But a very patient Irish squad came up with big time shots down the stretch and defeat Wilson 59-55 overcoming a four point deficit in overtime.

Collingswood's Composure Enough to Defeat Lindenwold

When a team is undefeated and has to an opponent's home court, there are several challenges that have to be met. One challenge of course would be to keep the game on the court and not worry about the home fans. The other would be to stick to the game plan and execute well on the court. The Panthers from Collingswood would take their six game winning streak and extend it by one when they traveled to Lindenwold High School. Jon Dempsey's success during the first half would help Collingswood defeat Lindenwold by a 74-65 margin. Collingswood improved their record to 7-0 while the Lions record dropped to 5-2 early on in the season.

A basketball schedule is designed to give every team a chance to compete against every team from a division in order to determine who’s the best and claim the title. When that time comes when a division match up takes place, it’s very important early in the season to come away with the win. Two teams that knew the importance of their time to compete against one another were Cherry Hill East and the Minutemaids from Washington Township. After three quarters of play were completed, the Cougars would watch their double digit lead shrink down to just two points. East would rely on converting their free throws down the stretch to preserve their 50-45 victory over Township.

Even before the season began, the Olympic Conference National Division seem to have several teams who could be ranked as a top team in South Jersey. Camden would be one of those teams in a rebuilding phase and would have to find a way to step up and compete with the other teams from their division. Camden Catholic would begin their game against the Lady Panthers quick and fast and control this game up until the very end. When the final buzzer was sounded, the Irish would walk off the court with an 83-34 victory at home.

Women's basketball center Megan Rulon has been a fixture as the Raptor of the Week during her senior season. She earned her third Rutgers-Camden weekly honor in five weeks after another standout performance on the court, where she was named to the all-tournament team at the South Padre Island (Texas) Shootout Dec. 28-29. Rulon averaged 17.5 points, 15.5 rebounds and 6.5 blocked shots in her two games in Texas while earning her second all-tourney berth this season. She also was on the tournament team at the season-opening Jim Crawley Classic at Frostburg State University Nov. 18-19. In a loss to Concordia University Dec. 28, Rulon collected game-high totals of 20 rebounds, 18 points and 10 blocked shots to record her second career triple-double. Her 20 rebounds set a career high. She added game-high totals of 17 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks in a consolation game win over Juniata College Dec. 29.

The last game on the schedule of the Jameer Nelson Classic boy's basketball tournament held at Cherry Hill East High School would put the talented Burlington City team against the Bulldogs from Haddonfield. The Bulldogs arguably have been labeled as the best team in South Jersey, feature the 7-2 senior center Brian Zoubek. Opposing teams' game play would be to challenge the dominating center inside or find the open shot on the perimeter. The Blue Devils would be successful during the first half, but Haddonfield's the second half defense allowed them to pull away and post a 76-54 decision and capture the Nelson Classic title.

It has been a very busy week for those teams participating in the holiday tournaments that take place at the end of the year. For LEAP Academy, they had just completed a tournament in North Jersey and were right back on the court this time participating in the Jameer Nelson Classic held at Cherry Hill East High School. The Lancers would have to defeat a highly ranked St. Anthony boy's basketball team. Right away St. Anthony showed why they are so good with so many talented players on the court. LEAP Academy would have their seven game winning streak ended as St. Anthony would go on and post the 75-53 win.

There was an inaugural New Jersey Charter School Holiday Tournament held at Scared Heart that involved LEAP Academy University High Charter School from Camden. The Lancers from LEAP Academy advanced to the finals of this tournament against CREATE from Jersey City. Trailing by six points heading into the final quarter, Will Mace would contribute in the Lancers outscoring their opponent 25-8 to take control of this championship game. LEAP would go on to defeat CREATE 78-67 giving head coach Marco Marcos a well deserved victory.

Griffins Fall as Devils Win Second Straight

For the second straight game the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's basketball team defeated the Griffins- this time the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College as hot shooting in the first half provided the entire cushion they needed as they cruised to their second straight win, an 85-67 triumph tonight at the Bobby Morgan Arena. The Devils connected on 18 of 32 shots in the first half (56.3%) as they opened up a 50-24 lead at the break. USP also made their first seven shots from beyond the arc and finished the half making seven of eight. USP also was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line in the half.

Teams are always comparing themselves to their previous year's success or disappointments. But the common goal by players and the coaching staff is how to become better that last year. The effort on the court can determine how pleased or frustrated a coach could be while watching their team performs on the court. In a very competitive boy's basketball game at the Moorestown Invitational, the Quakers would own a two point lead at the break. Westampton Tech would jump out to a lead heading into the final quarter and hold off Moorestown to advance to the finals. Tech would defeat Moorestown 42-38 and give their coach something to smile about.

With everyone's opinion about this year's high school basketball season, no wonder the fans are ready to see which player or players would be advancing to the college ranks as a highly recruited division one player. Julius Ingram would be one of many high school players that have a chance of making South Jersey proud of his accomplishments both on and off the court. In the Moorestown Invitational against West Windsor South, Ingram would help lead Bishop Eustace to a 65-43 victory and advance to the finals of this tournament.

While many people were enjoying the holidays by extending their mini vacation through the New Years, area high schools were hard at work participating in one of the many basketball tournaments during the break. The Moorestown Invitational was one of those schools serving as a host allowing Holy Cross and Haddon Township to compete on the basketball court. The Lancers would start this game off slowly by only scoring eight first half points against Haddon Township. Christi Lurano would lead the Lancers second half rally and eventually send this game into two overtime periods. Holy Cross would outscore the Lady Hawks by four points in double overtime and defeat Township by a 49-45 margin.

Quakers Advance To Moorestown Invitational Finals

With one team already advancing to the finals, host Moorestown would be looking to match up with Holy Cross in order to win the Moorestown Invitational title. Standing in their way would be the Lady Rams from Riverside. These two Burlington County League teams have played on familiar ground in the past, but this was the start of a new undiscovered season for both teams. Moorestown quickly set the tempo for the game dominating both ends of the court. The Lady Quakers were never in any danger of losing this game as they routed Riverside by a 62-26 score.

It was the start of a new season were two familiar teams would meet on the basketball court for a Burlington County Patriot Division game. The Lancers from Holy Cross were hosting the Scotties from Bordentown in a game that started out with both teams were trying to find a way to gain the advantage. Holy Cross would take control of this game during the second and third quarter to expand their single digit lead into double digits. By the time the final buzzer could be heard, The Lady Lancers had eight different players finding their way into the scoring column and pick up the 49-39 decision over Bordentown.

The University of the Sciences Men’s Basketball Team placed four players in double figures as they earned their first win of the 2005-06 campaign tonight, defeating the Gwynedd Mercy College Griffins, 80-64. Bill Kurtz made seven of 11 shots from the field, including four from beyond the three-point arc to lead all scorers with 22 points. Eric Cangelosi, returning to action after missing the last two games due to illness, had 17 points and seven rebounds.

Senior center Megan Rulon became the 10th player in Rutgers-Camden women’s basketball history to reach the 1,000-point milestone for her career, scoring a game-high 25 points at The College of New Jersey Dec. 7 to climb into the exclusive club. She also grabbed seven rebounds and had a game-high nine blocked shots. That milestone performance was part of a huge week for Rulon, who nearly had a triple-double against St. Mary’s College of Maryland on Dec. 5 (17 points, 10 rebounds and nine blocks) and capped her outstanding run at Rutgers-Newark Dec. 10 with a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds.

The University of the Sciences men's basketball team's battle back from a 20-point second half deficit fell just short as the Post University Eagles defeated the Devils 71-64 today in Waterbury, CT. The loss drops the Devils to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in CACC games. Post improved to 2-4 overall, 1-3 in the CACC. Bill Kurtz led the Devils with 22 points while Collin Harrington added 10. Post put four players in double figures, led by Arthur Robertson's 22 points. A.J. Reitter had 13 points while Peter Lawal and Isa Carnegie chipped in 10 apiece. Lawal also recorded a game-high 16 rebounds and six blocked shots.

Leah Shumoski scored 33 points and Rashanna Edwards added a career-high 20 points as the University of the Sciences women’s basketball team won their second straight game, 87-64 over Post University today in Waterbury, CT. Shumoski connected on 14 of 29 shots from the field and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. The senior forward also led the Devils with six rebounds and three assists. Edwards connected on eight of 10 shots from the field, including two of three from three-point range and a pair of free throws en route to her career-high performance.

For the first time this season, the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia's men's basketball team was not in the game in the final minute as they connected on just 27.8% of their shots before falling to Felician College 63-47 to remain winless in the 2005-06 campaign. The Golden Falcons led wire to wire in improving to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in CACC games. USP falls to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

Senior guard Carmen Zimmitt produced double-digit scoring outputs in all three of her women’s basketball games last week, capped by a career-high 24 points against Ramapo College Dec. 3 in a game where she also had a career-high seven steals. Zimmitt averaged 16.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 4.7 steals for the week, while also blocking two shots. She hit 12 of her 15 foul shots (80 percent) and is now shooting 82.4 percent (28-for-34) on the season from the charity stripe.

Shelby Rance scored the 1,000th point of her college career in the first half and finished the game with 26 but it was not enough as the Devils blew an eight-point lead in the final seven minutes of play, losing to Dominican College 66-58. The loss drops the Devils to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in league play. Dominican improves to 3-1 overall, 1-1 in league play.

Chargers Hand Devils their Fourth Straight Loss

The Dominican College Chargers scored nine points in the final 1:17, negating a solid second half by the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's basketball team, handing the Devils their fourth straight loss, 66-63. With the game tied at 57-all, the Devils gave up a three point play to go down by three 60-57 at the 1:08 mark. Collin Harrington's basket made the score 60-59 before Damien Davis connected from downtown to put the Chargers up four 63-59 with 30 ticks left on the clock. Howard Lanier's two free throws made the score 63-61 with 24 seconds left. Charger free throws by Prince Jackson and James Gray sealed the win as Lanier's three point shot at the buzzer fell way short.

Christian Sparks Rally as Devils Defeat Rams

Mary Beth Christian came off the bench to score 12 points in the second half as the Devils rallied from a four point deficit midway through the period to defeat host Philadelphia University 68-58. The Devils improve to 2-2 overall with the win and 1-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play. The Rams drop to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference. Christian was one of four players in double figures for the Devils who were led by Shelby Rance's 21 points. Rashanna Edwards added 11 points and five assists, while Leah Shumoski chipped in 10 points. Shumoski also pulled down seven rebounds, added three steals and a blocked shot. Rance had six boards, three steals and a block. Allison Weiss had nine rebounds to pace the Devils on the glass.

Freshman forward Crystal Pezzano made quite an impact in her third collegiate game last week, scoring a team-high 22 points and adding five rebounds in a 73-67 loss at Richard Stockton College Nov. 22. Pezzano shot 9-for-14 from the floor and 4-for-6 from the foul line against Stockton after scoring eight points in each of her first two collegiate outings. On the early season, Pezzano is second on the Lady Raptors with a 12.7 scoring average.

Shelby Rance recorded the first double-double of her career netting 26 points and 11 rebounds as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia won their home opener and their first game of the season 72-56. Rance scored 15 of her 26 points in the first half, connecting on seven of 11 shots from the field leading the Devils as they overcame a 7-0 deficit to start the game to leas by 12, 40-28 at the break. Rance finished the game shooting 11-for-17 from the field with one three-pointer and 3-for-5 from the free throw line.

Center Megan Rulon started her senior season on the women’s basketball team in style, earning all-tournament team honors at the Seventh Annual Jim Crawley Classic at Frostburg State University Nov. 18-19. While helping the Lady Raptors split their first two games, Rulon collected 37 points, 27 rebounds and nine blocked shots, raising her career totals to 220 blocks (71 shy of the school record), 596 rebounds and 906 points. She is 94 points from becoming the 10th player in program history to reach 1,000 for her career. Overall, Rulon went 14-for-23 from the floor and 9-for-15 from the foul line. She also added four assists and four steals.

Rutgers-Camden Hires Hodges as Women’s Basketball Coach

Basketball has taken Dale Hodges all over the globe, but the former St. Joseph’s University All-American now has a new home court in Camden. Hodges, a 1990 St. Joseph’s graduate who has played professional basketball on three continents, in addition to coaching on the collegiate level, has been named as the head coach of the Rutgers University-Camden women’s basketball team. Hodges follows Joe Baker Jr., who was promoted from assistant to the interim head coach this past season after head coach Jackie Trakimas left to take a coaching and teaching job at Lindenwold High School. Baker will remain on Hodges’ new staff as the recruiting coordinator.
