Basketball Spotlight: Thursday, January 26, 2006 By Bob Heller Philadelphia, PA Ten University of the Sciences in Philadelphia student-athletes were named to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Fall All-Academic Team announced earlier today. To qualify for the honor, recipients must have maintained at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average, participated in a fall CACC championship sport, and been at least a sophomore academically and athletically. The ten Devils were among 111 honorees in six sports from all 13 conference schools. Six of the ten are repeat selections from last year’s team. Qualifying from the women’s volleyball team were Emily Roth (Dallastown High School/York, PA) and Danielle Grimaldi (Staten Island Technical High School/Staten Island, NY). Roth, a senior outside hitter, has a 3.925 GPA in USP’s Doctor of Pharmacy program while Grimaldi, a sophomore defensive specialist, has a 3.92 GPA, also in the university’s Doctor of Pharmacy program. Roth, a repeat selection from last year’s team, was also the 2005 CACC Women’s Volleyball Player of the Year and a 2005 ESPN, The Magazine/ CoSIDA First Team Academic All-America selection. Juniors Shelby Rance (Central Columbia HS/Bloomsburg, PA) and Amanda Reed (Haverford HS/Haverford, PA) and sophomores Dana Lulias (Bishop Shanahan High School/West Chester, PA) and Joy Aifuwa (Edison HS/Edison, NJ) represented the women’s cross country team. Rance, Reed and Aifuwa are in the Doctor of Pharmacy program at USP while Lulias is a Physical Therapy major. Aifuwa has a 3.55 GPA and earned All-CACC honors, finishing third overall in the conference championship race. Rance also earned All-CACC honors and has a 3.51 GPA. Reed has an overall GPA of 3.50 and Lulias 3.65. All four runners were an integral part of the Devils first ever CACC Championship Team won in late October. Reed and Rance are repeat selections from last year’s team Representing the men’s cross country team is junior George Strock (Blue Mountain High School/Pottsville, PA). Strock has a 3.77 GPA in the Doctor of Pharmacy program at USP and is also a repeat selection from last year’s fall honorees. Three members of the women’s tennis team round out the ten Devils named. Sophomore Amanda Bedway (Blue Mountain High School/Orwigsburg, PA) has a 3.84 GPA in the Doctor of Pharmacy program. Juniors Stephanie Gabel (Academy of Allied Health and Science/ Hazlet, NJ) has a 3.62 GPA in Physical Therapy and Tara Torrone (Red Bank Catholic HS/Lincroft, NJ) has a 3.57 cumulative GPA in the Doctor of Pharmacy Program. Gabel and Torrone are repeat selections from last year’s team. |
