Shumoski, Rance Power Devils to Win over Bloomfield

Leah Shumoski and Shelby Rance combined for 51 points as the Devils handed first place Bloomfield College their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) loss of the season 82-64 tonight at the USP's Bobby Morgan Arena.

The win was the Devils fifth straight and improved their record to 7-4 overall and 6-2 in the CACC. Bloomfield drops to 10-1 overall and 8-1 in conference play.

Shumoski (Sr., Marple-Newtown HS/Broomall, PA) finished the game with 29 points to lead all scorers. The senior forward connected on eight of nine shots in the second half and 11 of 19 for the game and was 7-for-9 from the free throw line. Rance (Jr., Central Columbia HS/Bloomsburg, PA) joined her in reaching the 20-point mark with 22 points on the night, including a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe. Allison Weiss (Fr., Springfield HS/Springfield, PA) joined Shumoski and Rance in double figures with 11 points. Leah also pulled down a team high eight rebounds had four assists, three steals and a block. Her 11 field goals in the game raised her career total to 580, making her USP’s all-time women’s basketball leader, surpassing Amy D’Alessandro’s (1992-95) total of 575. She is already the Devils all-time leading scorer with 1,579 career points. Weiss had seven boards for the Devils and Rashanna Edwards (Jr., West Windsor-Plainsboro HS/Cherry Hill, NJ) had a game-high five assists.

Domenica Raymond and Marissa Franklin paced the Lady Deacons with 22 points apiece. Franklin led all rebounding stats with nine.

The Devils led for all but the opening two minutes of the game, going on a 21-6 run to break a 4-4 tie and take 25-10 lead with 11:12 left in the period. The Devils still led by 14, 31-17 late in the half when Bloomfield went on a 10-0 run to pull within four, 31-27 with 2:22 to go. Shumoski's jumper broke the run and the Devils added four straight free throws to take a 37-29 lead into the break.

A 6-2 run by the Lady Deacons opened the second half as the Devils saw their lead whittled to four points, 39-35 as Raymond scored four of Bloomfield's first six pints of the period. After Raymond's two free throws cut the USP lead to four, the Devils went on an 11-4 run over the next 4:56 to boost their lead back up to double digits, 50-39. Rance started things off with a pair of free throws and Shumoski followed with a layup and subsequent free throw to complete a three-point play to make the score 44-35. Stephanie Watson (Sr., Archbishop Ryan HS/Warminster, PA) then sandwiched a pair of free throws in between a pair of Bloomfield baskets and then added a basket of her own to make the score 48-39. Shumoski completed the run with a layup.

USP boosted their lead to 13, 58-45 on a Hayley Lentz (So., Wilson HS/ Easton, PA) layup before Shumoski starting lighting up the scoreboard. Leah scored the Devils next 10 points, making four straight baskets and a pair of free throws over the next 3:29 and added her final field goal of the game (and eighth straight in the half) with 4:47 left to make the score 71-57.

Four straight free throws by Rance in the final minute boosted the Devils lead to their biggest margin, 18, 79-61 which wound up as the final margin as the Devils prevailed 82-64.

USP held a big advantage on the foul line, 23-for-28 to Bloomfield's 10-for-14. For the game the Devils shot 48.3% (29-60) including a 16-for-27 performance in the final stanza (59.3%). Bloomfield connected on 43.3% of their shots from the field (26-60) and held a slight advantage on the boards 35-34. The Devils took advantage of an 18-13 assist-turnover ratio while scoring 19 points of 17 Bloomfield turnovers.
