High School Field Hockey: Thursday, November 9, 2006 By Stephanie Wright During the state finals, every team participating in their quest to reach the title game has the talent to claim the state trophy for their school. Haddonfield, with a loss so far with a record of 19-0-2, is another team with players that can completely take over a game. Against Rumson Fair Haven, the Bulldogs found themselves back on their heals during the early moments of this Group II semi-finals game played at Bishop Eustace. Haddonfield would regroup and post a three goal lead during the second half and found themselves defending their chance to advance to the finals. The defense, led by goalie Christina Puggi, would survive a late rally by Rumson and advance to the finals with their 3-2 victory. |
High School Field Hockey: Thursday, November 9, 2006 By Stephanie Wright These two teams were very familiar with one another as they had met in last year's playoffs. The Bulldogs from Glassboro were looking to repeat their performance by knocking off the Lady Crusaders out of the post season tournament for the second year in a row. This evenly played first half of field hockey had to be decided during that all-important second half. The host Bishop Eustace would rally behind Leah Furey's goal midway through the half proved to be the game winner. The Crusaders, with their 3-1 victory over Glassboro, will advance to the state finals. |
High School Field Hockey: Friday, November 3, 2006 By Stephanie Wright It was a match up between the second and third seed of the Central Jersey Group I field hockey tournament and there was no doubt that it would be a very close game. On the field, the Lady Crusaders from Bishop Eustace started out this game strong on both ends of the field pressuring Gloucester's defense during the opening moments. With every attempt in getting the game's first goal coming up short, Bishop Eustace just would give up. The Crusaders would score a goal in each half and reward themselves with a 2-0 win and advance to the finals against New Egypt. |

The way this area has been experiencing unseasonable warm weather, players and fans of all ages didn't mind enjoying outdoor events. Today, the Cougars from Cherry Hill East traveled to Pennsauken to take on the Indians. Cherry Hill East would control this game and during the final moments of the game, the Lady Cougars would celebrate their 2-1 victory. |
High School Field Hockey: Wednesday, November 1, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty The seedings listed Cherokee as the underdog in their game against the Lady Lions from Cherry Hill West. This semi-finals girls' Central Jersey Group IV playoff game gave the Chiefs more than enough reasons to prove that they were a lot better than their regular season record had indicated. The eighth seeded Chiefs surprised Cherry Hill West by taking a three goal lead at halftime leaving the fifth seeded Lions in search of a second half comeback. Cherokee would continue to stay ahead in this game and advance to the sectional finals with their 4-1 victory. Liz Fox scored twice for the Chiefs and now move into the sectional finals against Rancocas Valley. |
High School Field Hockey: Wednesday, November 1, 2006 By Susan Hall When a team has won so many group titles, an opposing team can be a bit intimidated with all of their recent success. Pemberton's field hockey program has turned itself back into a winning tradition and they would get a chance to see how far their accomplishments would take them. Traveling to Moorestown and competing in a Central Jersey Group II tournament, the Lady Quakers took a small advantage at the break and used the second half to continue to stay ahead of Pemberton. Cornelia Duffin would score three of the four goals scored in this game and help Moorestown advance to the finals with their 4-0 victory. The Lady Quakers will now try to pick up their fifth consecutive sectional title. |
High School Field Hockey: Monday, October 30, 2006 By Stephanie Wright With the seedings for the upcoming state tournament already established, Camden Catholic's success during the regular season has rewarded them with a bye during the first round of the South Jersey Group II field hockey tournament. The start of this year's quest for the title begins tomorrow but the Irish still had a regular season divisional game to play against Paul IV. This was an opportunity for both teams to finish off the season with a good showing on the field. Camden Catholic would use this opportunity to prepare for the postseason and they did so by posting a 7-1 victory over the Lady Eagles. Kathleen Notos led the way for the Irish by scoring three goals. |
High School Field Hockey: Thursday, October 26, 2006 By Stephanie Wright Two teams that have already secured a seed in the upcoming NJSIAA state tournament were Northern Burlington and Holy Cross. Today, they had an opportunity to compete in an inter-division Burlington County League field hockey game. For one half of this classic match up, neither team had an advantage on the scoreboard at intermission. Taking advantage of their situations, the Lady Lancers would score the only goals of the second half and posted a 3-1 victory over Northern Burlington. Lauren Hadam scored twice for Holy Cross. |
High School Field Hockey: Tuesday, October 24, 2006 By Susan Hall You couldn't help but notice that the game between the Lady Quakers from Moorestown and the Lady Lancers from Holy Cross would be something special. These two teams represented field hockey programs that have successfully rolled through their schedule compiling win after win. Their accomplishments during the regular season have rewarded them with championships from their perspective division in the Burlington County League. But today, each team would put away their recent success and completed on the field in an inter-league game. Moorestown would strike first in this game and never looked back from that point on. The Lady Quakers would post the 3-0 lead and pick up another win against a very good team. |
High School Field Hockey: Saturday, October 21, 2006 By Susan Hall With the official pairings for the upcoming postseason playoffs being released on Monday, two teams would get a chance to use today's game as a tune up to the beginning of the NJSIAA field hockey tournament. The Lady Lions from Cherry Hill West and the Lady Irish from Camden Catholic both have clinched a position for the post season and had the opportunity to compete in a regular season game. The defense for Camden Catholic was able to keep the Lions off the scoreboard allowing the offense to put the only points on the scoreboard. Michelle Vittese scored two goals for the Irish helping the team to post the 4-0 win. Jess Pandola earned the shutout in goal for Camden Catholic. |
High School Field Hockey: Friday, October 13, 2006 By Susan Hall Each and every game a team will have one, two or maybe three players who have the right individual match ups enabling those players to take control of a game. A team would then begin to look for those right situations for those players and begin to receive positive results. It was Kierstyne McGuire's turn to lead the Silver Knights from Sterling field hockey team on several good scoring chances against Woodbury. For two halves, the Knights were able to kept most of the play in the attack zone and they would be rewarded with a 3-0 win. McGuire recorded a goal and two assists in a totally team effort. |
High School Field Hockey: Thursday, September 28, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty It was a classic rivalry between East versus West, Cougars against Lions, Cherry Hill battling Cherry Hill. Fore the entire game played at Cherry Hill East High School, both teams had their chances of being the field hockey squad that could have come away with the victory. Both of these teams worked hard toward proving who the better team was on this day. Then it happened, the Cougars would get that goal that would decide the game from Stephanie Scarpa. East would be able to hold onto that lead and pick up the win. |
High School Field Hockey: Wednesday, September 27, 2006 By Susan Hall It was a game that both teams played well enough to come away with the win. Excellent team play, stick control and aggressive play could seen at Haddonfield were the Bulldogs were hosting West Deptford in a Colonial Conference Liberty Division field hockey game. This was the second time these two teams have met and for the second time, Haddonfield had the answers in defeating the Lady Eagles. Working together as a single unit on the field, Haddonfield's defense was able to preserve a 1-0 lead during the second half and remain undefeated. |
High School Field Hockey: Tuesday, September 26, 2006 By Stephanie Wright Eastern's field hockey team doesn't take any team lightly. Knowing that any team can beat another team on any given day, it is important to play at the highest level each and every time they take the field. This time traveling to Washington Township to take on the Minutemaids in an Olympic Conference competition, Eastern used their speed and stick handling abilities and created several scoring chances early and led by three goals at halftime. The Vikings continued their fast and aggressive play all during the second half and were able to record a 10-1 victory. Jessica Allen, Kelsey Mitchell and Meghan Dawson each scored three goals apiece for Eastern. |
High School Field Hockey: Monday, September 25, 2006 By Susan Hall For so long, the Lady Panthers from Collingswood field hockey team has been one of those squads that opponents were either a bit nervous competing against or knew they were in for a hard fought battle. The Panthers' success has been dominating but with every new season, change is always waiting to occur. In a Colonial Conference match-up between the Lady Garnets from Haddon Heights and Collingswood, it would be the Garnets that were able to get the only goals of this game. Haddon Heights would score once in the first half and once in the second and defeat Collingswood 2-0. The win pushed the Garnets record to three wins and three losses early in this season. |
High School Field Hockey: Friday, September 22, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty Camden Catholic and Bishop Eustace is a rivalry that has it share of disappointments and excitement after coming away with a win. It's always that game that's marked on the calendar in anticipation of seeing which team is the better one on this day. These two neighboring schools can remember that goal that sent the other team home with a loss. Last year it was the Lady Crusaders who came away with a win over Camden Catholic to advance during the playoffs. Today, under different circumstances, the Lady Irish's field hockey team starting a new chapter by defeating Bishop Eustace by a 3-0 margin. Michelle Vittese scored twice to lead the Irish to victory. |
High School Field Hockey: Monday, September 11, 2006 By Susan Hall The season has started out well for Haddonfield so far and they were looking to continue that success. It is hard not to look ahead at their match-up against Eastern later on in the week, but Haddonfield would have to take it one game at a time. The Bulldogs had battled West Deptford to a one goal victory and keeper Christina Puggi was looking to come up with another defensive contest in front of the net and Haddonfield's defense would help her out. Haddonfield would score three times in this game and shut out Haddon Heights by that 3-0 margin. |
High School Field Hockey: Saturday, September 9, 2006 By Stephanie Wright There's always something that happens after the coaching staff gathers around with their players during the intermission session during a game. Words of wisdom, constructive criticism or just words of encouragement can be used to motivate the team. When the Lady Renegades from Shawnee visited Bishop Eustace in an Olympic Conference field hockey match-up, the visiting team would work their way to a one goal lead at the break. The Renegades would continue to control this game during the second half as goalie Briana Pereira would not allow a single shot into the cage. Shawnee would start off their season with an impressive 4-0 win against a very good team. |
High School Field Hockey: Saturday, September 9, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty The Minutemaids started out this game as if they were rushing out of the doors on the last day of school. But this was the season opener and Washington Township showed that they were ready to play. Standing in their way were the Lady Lions from Cherry Hill West. Township took full advantage of their corner opportunities and took a 3-0 lead during the first half. The Lions would respond early during the second half, but this day would belong to the Minutemaids. Sherri Fort and Megan Scarpinato both scored two goals apiece and Washington Township would reward themselves with a 5-1 victory in Olympic Conference play. |
High School Field Hockey: Friday, September 8, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty With last year's group of leadership now taking on new challenges, a new group has accepted the role of a leader looking to continue on their school’s success. The Lady Quakers from Moorestown were hosting the Falcons from Burlington Township to start off the new field hockey season. Moorestown’s offense, traditionally known to score goals in bunches, took awhile in getting their first score of the season. Just over twelve minutes into this game, the Lady Quakers would score their first of four first half goals. Moorestown’s defense would highlight this game as Kari Tobin and Marissa Toniatti each finished the game with two goals apiece. The Lady Quakers would pick up their opening day win with their 7-0 victory. |
High School Field Hockey: Tuesday, November 15, 2005 By Susan Hall St. Joseph Hammonton captured the South Jersey Group I title and were beginning their quest towards the state championship. Standing in their way were the Warriors from New Egypt who were the winners of the Central Group I bracket. Both of their previous number one seed status would be thrown away for now and their new seeding in this years Group I state title would begin. Four first half goals scored by New Egypt completely controlled the outcome of this game held at Bishop Eustace Prep School. Shannon Houston and Sara Messinger both finished the game with two goals apiece and the Lady Warriors from New Egypt would be advancing to their third straight state title game. New Egypt will now play Pingry after defeating St Joseph by an 8-1 margin. |
High School Field Hockey: Saturday, November 12, 2005 By Joyce Sagerty The Red Raiders from Ocean City have been in this situation so many times you would think that they have gotten use to all of the pressure. For the past nine years, the field hockey team has made it to the finals of the South Jersey Group III tournament. They have won their last three titles as the number one seed and loss three as the lower seed. The last time the Red Raiders won the sectional title not sitting in the top spot was seven years ago. Back as the highest seed in a bracket, Kingsway was back as the number two seed looking to defend their two year reign. Ocean City had come up on the short end of those games, but this year would be different. In the second overtime period, Melissa Hunter's goal minutes into the session would return the title back to Ocean City. |
High School Field Hockey: Friday, November 11, 2005 By Susan Hall This time it would be Wall looking to dethrone Moorestown's field hockey team from capturing their fifth straight sectional title. With that much success, opposing teams send out their scouts looking for some kind of weakness to exploit in order to gain an edge. It's close to impossible to defend speed, talent and the awesome skill of the game the Lady Quakers possess. Seventh seeded Wall continued to impress by cutting Moorestown's two goal lead in half in the second half. But the home team quickly turned this very competitive game back into their favor. Cassie Grossman had other plans as her third straight goal gave Moorestown the lead for good and capture the victory 4-1. Moorestown will now be looking to add their 16th state title in their school's history. |
High School Field Hockey: Wednesday, November 9, 2005 By Susan Hall It was down to just four teams remaining and all were looking to advance to the South Jersey Group III field hockey finals. Ocean City, Kingsway, Cumberland and Hammonton all were competing today to advance to the finals. In Ocean City, the number one seeded Red Raiders were hosting fifth seeded Hammonton to earn a chance at the title against second seeded Kingsway who defeated third seeded Cumberland. Ocean City would get three goals from three different players and goal keeper Devon Seifert would earn the shutout for the Red Raiders. |
High School Field Hockey: Wednesday, November 9, 2005 By Joyce Sagerty The Lady Vikings from Eastern has an impressive record. Six consecutive conference championships, six consecutive sectional championships, six consecutive state champions and have been labeled as the number one team in the nation for the past three years. The Vikings would take their 18-1-2 record before this game and go for lucky number seven. Head coach Danyle Heilig's field hockey team has demonstrated what it takes to continue that success and keep that winning tradition at Eastern. Against the Minutemaids from Washington Township, Heilig was not too pleased with her team’s performance during the first half. The Lady Vikings would respond in the second half and defeat Washington Township 5-1 and advance to their seventh consecutive sectional finals. |
High School Field Hockey: Monday, November 7, 2005 By Susan Hall Time and time again the coaches send their players onto the field with the expectation of following every set of guidelines they must execute to coming away victorious. The relationship between player and coach is one that some would not agree with, but it is necessary for eleven players to work as one to complete their objective. West Deptford hosting Collingswood were two teams that have demonstrated their ability to win because of their relationship with their coaching staff. But sometimes it’s those individual performances that can change a game. Katie Feeley and Stefanie Bucholski were two players highlighting this team effort in defeating West Deptford 5-1 in a South Jersey Group II semi-finals game. |
High School Field Hockey: Thursday, November 3, 2005 By Joyce Sagerty When you take a look back on the entire first round results of the South Jersey Group II bracket of the field hockey competition, the four games finished in a tightly played match indicating it would not be an easy trip to the finals. All of the top four teams were waiting for the results of those games leaving third seeded Collingswood hosting Haddonfield who defeated their opponent by a single goal. In these games, a single goal could mean a lot as not too many goals are needed to win with the defenses dominating the play. These two teams just could not decide a winner after regulation and two overtime periods. Collingswood would win the shootout by a 3-1 margin advancing the Panthers to the next round against second seeded West Deptford. |
High School Field Hockey: Thursday, November 3, 2005 By Crystal Parker Coming into this game, both of these teams knew it wasn’t going to be easy to defeat their neighboring opponent. Experience has told them over and over again to limit giving up the corners and try not to leave any player alone in the box. Bishop Eustace traveling to Camden Catholic in first round action of the South Jersey Group II field hockey tournament were not successful at that task late in the second half. But what the Lady Crusaders were good at was scoring the only goal of this game and holding on to it. Hannah Rodgers’ goal just 48 seconds into the second half proved to be the game winner. |
High School Field Hockey: Saturday, October 29, 2005 By Susan Hall There were three teams right at the top of the Colonial Conference Patriot Division with a chance of claiming the title for their school. Haddon Heights, Haddon Township and Audubon were all heading into the final weekend of the regular schedule all needing a win. Haddon Township had loss to Collingswood on Friday night leaving the door wide open for the Lady Garnets traveling to Audubon to decide the title. Haddon Heights had their hopes of repeating as champs turned away by Audubon’s defense. With an early one goal lead, goalie Gina Medoro helped Audubon pick up the 1-0 decision. |
High School Field Hockey: Thursday, October 27, 2005 By Susan Hall As the regular season winds down, it gives a team time to reflect on their season. Looking back on a few of those games, would the outcome of a game been different if the team ran their called play better? What ever the reason, field hockey is a game that’s played together as a single unit working towards a goal to win. This game between Cherry Hill West and Camden Catholic was about two teams headed into the upcoming tournament. Cherry Hill West and Camden Catholic had the chance to get ready for the start of the state tournament by giving several players a chance to play more minutes. Today, these two teams could not decide a winner as the two ended in a scoreless tie. |
High School Field Hockey: Wednesday, October 26, 2005 By Susan Hall Camden Catholic's Michelle Vittese continues to lead her team in scoring and she would add to that total against the Lady Eagles from Paul VI. In an Olympic Conference and important National Division field hockey game against the Eagles, the Lady Irish needed just one more divisional victory to clinch the title. Seneca was that team in their rear view mirror looking to find a way to sneak up and tie Camden Catholic in the standings. But Vittese would score two goals for the Lady Irish to lead them past Paul VI by a 5-0 score. |
High School Field Hockey: Monday, October 17, 2005 By Crystal Parker It’s not that easy being labeled as one of the best teams not only in our area, but also in the state. So what kind of pressure would a team have when they have been considered the fifth best team in the country? The Lady Vikings from Eastern was that team taking on the competition’s quest to see what it takes to defeat a highly ranked field hockey team. Cherokee would be next in line looking to pick up an important win with the cutoff date to make it to the playoffs only days away. Eastern broke this Olympic Conference game wide open at the start of the second half with two quick goals and went on to defeat Cherokee by an 8-0 margin. With the win, Eastern has now captured their seventh straight Olympic Conference American Division title. |
High School Field Hockey: Monday, October 17, 2005 By Joyce Sagerty Two teams in search of a divisional title took the field at Collingswood both looking to extend on a mini winning streak. Haddon Heights were right on the heels of Haddon Township in the Patriot Division of the Colonial Conference while the Lady Panthers were in striking distance of first place in the Liberty Division behind West Deptford. Neither Collingswood nor Haddon Heights had to worry about qualifying for the state tournament as both teams were concentrating on finding a way to pick up the victory. Collingswood Amy Corbit and Katie Feely each scored twice and the Lady Panthers would cruise to the 6-1 win. |
High School Field Hockey: Monday, October 17, 2005 By Susan Hall There were eleven players from both teams on the field today looking to add another win to their standings. For both Gateway and Lindenwold, their focus has switched from extending their season into the playoffs to picking up as many wins they can with the regular season coming to an end. Well the Lady Gators from Gateway scored the first goal of the game and led at intermission. Lindenwold would work they way into tying this game early in the second half. But when the final second was counted down, the two teams would finish this game in a tie. |
High School Field Hockey: Saturday, October 15, 2005 By Susan Hall The month of October has a few indications that things are about to change in our area. The color of the leaves began to switch into fall mode, the temperatures drop a few degrees and the cutoff for making the post season can change a team’s hopes of making their run towards the states. Two teams that not only share the same town name, but also share that winning attitude as the first time they met last month neither team could decide a winner. Cherry Hill West was hosting Cherry Hill West in an Olympic Conference cross city rivalry. With the game tie at one at the start of the second half, Krista Taylor would score off of a corner that eventually gave the Lions the 2-1 victory over Cherry Hill West. |
High School Field Hockey: Thursday, October 6, 2005 By Evonne Vaughn Two teams took the field today with the confidence of picking up their first win of the season. Overbrook and Lindenwold were those two teams participating in a non-league field hockey game held at Lindenwold High School. Earlier in the week, the Lady Rams from Overbrook suffered a one goal loss in a game that could have gone either way. Lindenwold had played a strong game against powerhouse West Deptford on Tuesday but could not pick up the win. Against Overbrook, the Lady Lions would stay one step ahead in this fast moving, intense but exhausting game. Lisa Darji would score a second half goal to defeat Overbrook by a final score of 1-0. |
High School Field Hockey: Wednesday, October 5, 2005 By Crystal Parker Each game that the Lady Falcons from Burlington Township’s field hockey team has played has been an uphill battle. But that hasn’t stopped them from putting on the uniform and giving their best effort on the field. It would another steep hill to climb as they would travel to Moorestown High School to take on the Lady Quakers. Moorestown had started out the week with a tough win over Cherokee and were looking to keep up their finesse on the field. Burlington Township would keep the game close in the first half, but the Quakers were able to break this game open in the second half. Moorestown would pick up their eighth victory of the season by defeating the Falcons by a 9-0 margin. |
High School Field Hockey: Tuesday, September 27, 2005 By Susan Hall When the first day of the week begins, it's the time for teams to either build on or rebuild on their performance from the previous week. New adjustments are made to either refine the plays that worked or didn't work. What was working for the Lady Crusaders from Bishop Eustace was their success on the field. This time hosting Cherry Hill West, the Crusaders would start their week out picking up their second straight shutout. Three different players scored goals for Bishop Eustace as they posted a 3-0 victory over the Lady Lions. |
High School Field Hockey: Friday, September 16, 2005 By Joyce Sagerty The Lady Mustangs from Triton knew it was going to be a tough beginning to their field hockey season. With their first three games being played away from their home field, Triton would be matched up against Shawnee, Cherokee and Pennsauken. Looking for that change of scenery and the comforts of home, the Mustangs would take on the Rams from Overbrook in a non-league game. One goal was more than enough as four different players scored goals for Triton to shutout Overbrook. Keeper Jessica DeChristopher would not allow a goal in this game. |
High School Field Hockey: Monday, September 12, 2005 By Susan Hall Every team would like to pick up that first win on the first day that the season begins. It’s not a big disappointment if your teams doesn’t win during that game, but it’s one that team would like to forget quickly. For the Cougars from Schalick and the Lions from Gloucester City, both were looking to pick up that first win of the season in a Tri-County Conference Classic Division. During the first half of this game, the two teams played evenly and this game would be decided in the second half. Gloucester City’s Lauren Ross would break the deadlock with a goal halfway through the period and the defense would hold on to pick up the 2-1 victory. |
