Maybe there was a bit of pressure on the number one seeded team in this year's South Jersey Group III boy's soccer title game. Not knowing what to expect from eleventh seeded Lacey Township, the Ocean City boy's soccer team were playing back on their heels waiting for something to happen. Lacey Township were the surprise team this year defeating the higher seeded teams which allowed them at a chance to pick up the group title and also defeat what many has considered the best team in South Jersey. For one entire half, the two teams were unable to score a goal, but the second half was a different story as the Red Raiders ripped off five unanswered goals to claim the title.

On paper, the Delran Bears had the slight edge heading into this game. Even with the absence of one of their top scorer on the team, Delran was looking to pick up their third straight sectional title in front of their home crowd. Luckily this game is decided by the players on the field and the coaching staff that puts their players in the right situations. After the second seeded Bulldogs from Haddonfield found themselves trailing in this game, they would begin to match Delran’s intensity and not only tie this game but also take the lead early in the second half. This physically played game swung in Haddonfield’s favor and the Bulldogs would be able to hold off the charging Bears by a 2-1 margin.

One team standing in the way were the number one seeded Red Raiders from Ocean City. Penalty Kicks Gives Delran the Win

Tuesday, November 8, 2005

You hear it most of the time and it's the reason most players work so hard to avoid it. When a game has to be decided by penalty kicks, it takes away from the defense and the goal keeper's performance they had for two halves. Unfortunately it's the only way to determine a winner of a game when it can't be decided during the regulation and overtime periods. After Delran and Cinnaminson could not come up with the game winning kick during regulation, it was time for the shoot out session to begin. With the number one seeded Bears from Delran down 3-1 in penalty kicks to the Pirates, the home team would score the next four times to go ahead and defeat Cinnaminson and advance to the finals.

Senior back Erin Boiler sparked the Rutgers-Camden women’s soccer team to a 3-1 week with strong all-around play. The Raptors posted two shutouts and allowed only two goals in those four games, and Boiler also played a key role in the offense. One of the Lady Raptors’ tri-captains, Boiler had the game-tying goal in an eventual 2-1 win over Arcadia Sept. 6, notched a goal and two assists in a 7-0 win over Farmingdale State Sept. 8 and collected the game-winning goal in a 2-0 victory over Swarthmore Sept. 11. Lacrosse. What a great sport. Fun, fast, and action packed. Are you wearing the right equipment? If not, do so. With the school craze of wearing wrist bracelets I thought it was just a silly thing to do. First I wore my yellow one for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Now, this was not a silly gesture, my mom died of cancer so thought this would be a tribute to her. I really felt good about that.

In a thriller that featured back-and-forth high energy action the Barons season ended on a stoppage time strike from Dominic Oduro. Richmond 5, Barons 4. The Future duo of Cristian Neagu and Oduro produced dangerous situations from the start with their sublime touches. The opener finally came in the 25th minute off a quick restart after a foul by Chris Williams about 30 yards out, wide left. The quickly taken restart caught the Barons unsettled and Neagu put Oduro in and his strong right footed drive beat the Barons youngster, Nick Talarico for a 1-0 Future lead.

In the final regular season game the Barons produced a dominating performance defeating the Brooklyn Knights 6-0 on Sunday evening. It was easily the Barons best effort at both ends of the pitch over the final month of the season. A bit of irony too was part of the story as the Barons starting keeper was Nicolas Talarico, a 16 year old from the Barons youth programs. The Barons #1 GK, Ryan Carr suffered a shoulder injury in Friday night's win over Westchester and watched from the sideline as the Barons produced their only clean sheet of the regular season in this final match.

The Barons maintained their undefeated record at home with a 3-1 decision over the Westchester Flames tonight. Despite their control of the game the Barons were frustrated by shots blocked by the defense and a number of fine saves by Hulaire who was also helped by the woodwork. In the 21st minute a Ryan Heins cross found the head of Michael Todd whose strong header caught the crossbar.

The Ocean City Barons defeated the gritty NY Greek-Americans 3-0 at St. John's Univ tonight in what was an ill-tempered match in US Open Cup 1st Round action. It wasn't easy and it wasn't pretty, but in the end the Barons quality made the difference. The tough physical battle resulted in a 0-0 halftime scoreline but the Barons had managed several moves during that opening 45 that threatened the Atlas goal. Stalwart play by the keeper denied Mingo with a diving kick save on what was the most likely to produce a goal. On another Mingo was flattened by a blatant intentional foul by an elbow to his face while on a diagonal run through the box and a yellow was issued on the play.
