When the post season begins and the seeding are announced, the players from participating teams can't help but notice where they are and if they are in the same bracket as the number one seeded team. But when you are the number one team, the focus switches to defending that status as opposing teams are emotionally looking to remove that ranking by ending their season. The Lady Rams from Gloucester Catholic were the number one seeded team from the South Jersey Non-Public Group B tournament hosting St. Rose in the finals. In a defensive battle, it only took one goal to win this game and Jennie Vartebedian would come up with the lone goal for Gloucester Catholic. The Rams will now travel to the College of New Jersey to a state final game against Villa Walsh.
Playing smart soccer and limiting St. Rose's chances, Gloucester Catholic was able to keep the seventh seeded St. Rose team off the scoreboard for the entire game. The defense came up big allowing just one shot on goal. The Lady Rams had a bye the first round but during the semi-finals, the defense would highlight that game shutting out St. Joseph Hammonton. St. Rose had an impressive run to the finals, also showing that they could play defense. They defeated second seeded Bishop Eustace and third seeded Our Lady of Mercy. Gloucester Catholic knew not to taking their opponent lightly and they didn’t. Vartebedian’s effort in this game proved to be the decisive goal of this game.
