South Jersey Soccer: Ocean City to Host Conference Playoffs Monday, July 18, 2005 By Paul O'Donnell The Ocean City Barons will host the PDL Eastern Conference playoffs on the weekend of July 29-31. The road to the PDL National Championship starts here. The loss by Ottawa Sunday afternoon eliminated the possibility of the Fury overtaking the Barons 4 point advantage and winning the 2nd playoff spot. The Barons have two regular season matches remaining this coming weekend kicking off on Friday night against the Westchester Flames followed by a Sunday evening tilt with the Brooklyn Knights. Despite their recent loss at Cape Cod the Barons could still win the regular season division title with two victories and a stumble by Cape Cod in their weekend road games at Vermont and Ottawa. The finishing order will determine whether Cape Cod or the Barons will face the Kickers Future in the opening round of the conference playoffs. Joining the Barons for playoff weekend will be Cape Cod, the undefeated Richmond Kickers Future and either Raleigh's CASL Elite or Carolina Dynamo competing for an opportunity to advance to the PDL Championship Weekend (final to be held on August 13). Note: It was the Carolina Dynamo that eliminated the 2004 SJ Barons in the conference final 3-2. The Dynamo then went on to lose to eventual national champion Central Florida Kraze on PK's in last year's semifinals. The Cape Cod Crusader's were back-to-back PDL National Champs in 2002 & 2003. |
