South Jersey Soccer:
Match Report - Rhode Island Stingrays @ Ocean City Barons

Sunday, June 19, 2005

By Paul O'Donnell
Ocean City Barons Correspondent

The Barons raced to a 5-0 lead before surrendering two goals in the final 12 minutes Sunday for a 5-2 win over the visiting Stingrays.

The night began well for the Barons with Matt Maher's fine cross finding Michael Todd whose header sailed over the bar in the 3rd minute. In the 5th Jamie Franks found Todd again who buried his shot for the opening goal.

The Stingrays rallied briefly and forced a save from Ryan Carr in the 11th on a weak shot from distance and another was sent high over the bar. Then in the 16th minute Tony Donatelli made a strong run on the left and his nice ball found Carmichael who tucked the ball out of the keepers reach neatly and the score was 2-0 Barons.

Then in the 35th came the key play of the game. A high searching ball out of the back led to the Stingrays keeper, Dean Ruddy, making a strong challenge on Todd as he attempted to punch the ball away. The problem was, he was 5 yards outside of his box. A red card was issued for his intentional hand ball and Antunes-Silva moved into goal for the Stingrays who would finish the match down a man.

The Barons pressed hard to put the game away and were rewarded in the 40th minute when a deflected ball out of the midfield found Donatelli alone wide left. His strong run and left footed drive to the top corner, near post made the scoreline 3-0 Barons. A minute later Jamie Franks put Carmichael through and he made no mistake and it was 4-0 Barons at the break.

In the 51st Todd again opened the Stingrays defense with a deft touch behind him putting Mingo in on goal on the right. Mingo's stiff blast over the keeper made it 5-0 Barons. Mingo, who had come on for Carmichael, had several more strikes at goal as the Barons looked likely to add another as they pressed the man down Stingrays.

But it would be Rhode Island that would change the scoreline in the 78th minute with a deflected ball from Chris Napolitano found the back of the net and it was 5-1. Six minutes later Napolitano would add another on a penalty kick and it was 5-2.

The Barons Michael Todd was selected for Man of the Match honors for his strong performance on the night. The significant contributions of several other Barons was also key, such as Jamie Franks two assists in his first appearance in the starting 11. Bryon Carmichael's two goals and Tony Donatelli rang up another strong game adding a goal (the game winner) and an assist.

The Barons next take to the pitch on Sunday, June 26 as the Albany Admirals come to the Jersey shore. The Barons lone loss on the season was to the Admirals on May 15 in OT with the Barons playing down a man.

Ocean City will be looking to settle the season series in this one.
