High School Soccer: Thursday, November 11, 2004 By Crystal Parker It was an emotional title game for both teams. Washington Township and Lenape were very familiar opponents and it was no secret who the scorers were on the team. Lenape has been successful coming away with the victory against the Minutemaids during the regular season, but it was Washington Township who took an early lead in this South Jersey Group 4 girl's soccer title game. Lenape quickly swung the momentum in their favor in the second half when two quick goals pushed them in the lead for good. Allison Williams and Lindsay Walsh provided all of the scoring needed to capture the 3-1 victory. |
High School Soccer: Tuesday, November 9, 2004 By Jerome Michaels The way this second round boy's South Jersey Parochial B soccer game seemed on the scoreboard, it would have appeared as if the second seeded Crusaders from Bishop Eustace and the sixth seeded Spartans from Holy Spirit where in an evenly matched game. There wasn't a single goal scored but Eustace was winning the momentum battle. During the second half of this game, one goal would make the difference and Kyle Miller was the player giving the Crusaders the game winner. Bishop Eustace would advance to the finals with their 2-0 victory and take on the defending champs St. Rose for the title. |

High School Soccer: Friday, November 5, 2004 By Susan Hall The first round of the Parochial B South girl's soccer playoff game began for the Villagers from Our Lady of Mercy hosting Moorestown Friends. The Villagers were the third seeded team looking to advance to the next round by recording a victory over the sixth seeded Foxes. The reliable Maria Grady continued to lead her team in scoring and this game wasn't any different. Grady's first half goal was the eventual game winner as Our Lady advanced to the next round with their 2-0 decision over Moorestown Friends. |
High School Soccer: Tuesday, November 2, 2004 By Jason Brown Here we go again with a test to see if teams can improve or repeat their quest to advance further that they ever had. The Vikings from Atlantic City was one of those teams making the postseason for the first time in a while and were traveling to Lenape to take on the third seeded Indians. Lenape was looking to improve on capturing the South Jersey Group 3 title instead of just making it to it. Five second half goals broke a somewhat close game open. Lenape now advances to the next round with their 6-0 victory and will host Absegami. |
High School Soccer: Monday, November 1, 2004 By Susan Hall The beginning of the girl's South Jersey Group 2 soccer tournament began earlier today with two teams from the Colonial Conference Patriot Division. The eighth seeded Garnets from Haddon Heights were hosting the ninth seeded Hawks from Haddon Township in a first round girl's soccer game. Haddon Heights would get on the scoreboard first and maintain their lead throughout this game. Samantha Sharp scored twice for the Garnets as they advanced to the next round with their 3-1 win. |
College Soccer: Monday, November 1, 2004 By Mike Ballard Sophomore back Shawn Cunning has been a big cog in the stellar defense of the Rutgers-Camden men's soccer team all season long, and he turned in a pair of big performances last week as the Scarlet Raptors continued their season-long success. Cunning helped the Raptors close the regular season with a 3-0 shutout at Ramapo College Oct. 27, then post a 1-0 victory over Kean Oct. 30 in the opener of the New Jersey Athletic Conference playoffs. The two shutouts raised the Raptors' total to 11 for the season - one shy of the school record - and gave Rutgers-Camden a new program mark with 15 wins heading into the NJAC semifinals. |
High School Soccer: Sunday, October 31, 2004 By Boog Williams The South Jersey Coaches Tournament Finals were held at Rutgers-Camden University this Sunday. With the wind wiping off the Delaware River, which had an effect on the game, most of the game was played at the end closest to the baseball diamond. With 32:30 left in the first half, Lenape’s Danielle Shine, with the wind at her back, crossed a ball from the left. The ball went up high, hit the ground around the six-box and bounced high in the air. Cinnaminson’s Keeper, Lauren Wojcik, jumped to grab it but was distracted by Lindsay Walsh. The ball bounced off Wojcik’s hand and just crossed over the line, without hitting the ground, as Walsh was yelling it was a goal. The Linesman agreed and Lenape took a 1-0 lead off of a wind helped goal. |

As per League policy, terms of the agreements were not disclosed. |
High School Soccer: Thursday, October 28, 2004 By Susan Hall Two Olympic Conference girl's teams from two different divisions met on the soccer field at Camden Catholic trying to determine which the better team was on this day. Cherry Hill West was that visiting team who has been successful in proving they should be the top team in the Patriot Division, and they are. In a defensive battle, the Cougars were able to get one shot past keeper Bridget Mahon who was solid all game. That lone goal was scored by Angie Wilmer giving West the 1-0 decision. |
High School Soccer: Wednesday, October 27, 2004 By Jerome Michaels Back and forth these teams went for most of the game looking for the right moment and opportunity to score that first goal of the game. For the Panthers from Pitman, they have been successful finding ways to win games and it shows as they have secured a position in the upcoming South Jersey Group 1 playoffs. The Knights has been coming up on the short end this season but it didn't show in this non-league game at Sterling. With the game entering its final minutes, Mark Thompson placed a shot into the net for the only goal of the game. |
High School Soccer: Wednesday, October 27, 2004 By Stephanie Wright Two days ago the Lady Villagers celebrated clinching the Cape-Atlantic Conference National Division II title when they defeated Bridgeton by a 4-2 score. In that game Maira Grady increased her season total goals scored by three to twenty-four. The goals did not come easy for the first place Villagers traveling to Lower Cape May to take on the Lady Capers. With all of the scoring occurring during the second half, both teams picked up their first tie of the second as neither team would in the double overtime sessions. |
College Soccer: Monday, October 25, 2004 By Mike Ballard Freshman Julie Grochowski has been a bright spot all season long for the Rutgers-Camden volleyball team, and the freshman continued her fine play last week. In three matches, Grochowski collected 31 kills, 56 digs, five aces and 16 blocks. A two-time New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week (Sept. 20 and 27), she also was a member of the All-Gothic Knight Women's Volleyball Invitational team Oct. 16. She leads the Lady Raptors in kills (241), digs (325) and blocks (61) and is second on the team in aces (45). |
Soccer Spotlight: Monday, October 25, 2004 By David Deal The Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) announced today that Philadelphia KiXX defender Pat Morris has been named the League's Defensive Player of the Week for the seven-day period ending October 24. The honor marks the first such accolade for a member of the Philadelphia KiXX in the 2004-05 season. |
High School Soccer: Sunday, October 24, 2004 By Boog Williams In the first game of the Coaches Tournament semi-finals, #2 Cinnaminson defeated #10 Ocean City 3-2 on penalty kicks. After the first half ended 0-0, in which Ocean City had the better play of the game, the second half also ended 0-0. Cinnaminson had the better play of the game in the half, as the game went into overtime. In the first overtime, Ocean City's keeper, Abbey Hansen, made a great save but could not control the ball as it bounced to Cinnaminson's Meaghan Reilly. Reilly and Hansen collided, with the ball going behind Hansen, but was cleared by Sweeper Katie Ruiz. Ruiz was one reason why the score was 0-0. She played a great game at sweeper. |
High School Soccer: Friday, October 22, 2004 By Susan Hall For those teams that have qualified for the playoffs by finishing with a record above five hundred before the cutoff date, it's now time to refocus on improving on the areas that needs some work. The seeding for the soccer postseason brackets will be out soon and teams can begin the preparation against their opponent. Both Schalick and Highland's girls soccer teams were coming off of wins and had earn a shutout in that victory. In this Tri-County Conference interdivision game, the Lady Tartans would watch their opponents score twice in the second half to earn the tie. |
High School Soccer: Friday, October 22, 2004 By Stephanie Wright Each year the coaching staff is looking for ways to improve their team's success. Our Lady of Mercy had qualified for this year's post season's playoff and was looking for more. After a one goal victory over Buena two days ago, the Villagers' Meghan Zapeic did not allow a single goal enter the net against St. Joseph. All of the scoring happened in the second half with Maria Grady and Caitlin Hess each scoring twice to lead Our Lady of Mercy to a 4-0 victory. |
High School Soccer: Wednesday, October 20, 2004 By Stephanie Wright Each game is sometimes considered a test to see how well a team performs under certain circumstances. When Our Lady of Mercy traveled to Buena to compete in a girl's soccer game, it would be against a team that has proven to themselves that they know how to win. The National Division I leaders had lived up to their success as they played a very exciting game against the Villagers. With the game tied at two goals apiece late in the second half, freshman Marybeth Scharle scored the winning game with a minute and twenty seconds remaining in the game. That goal gave the National Division II leaders the 3-2 victory. |
High School Soccer: Monday, October 18, 2004 By Stephanie Wright When Egg Harbor Township visited Our Lady of Mercy Academy last week, the shot attempts came easy for the Lady Villagers but not the goals. A total of thirty shots were taken but only one made it into the net. The same pattern continued when this time, Wildwood Catholic was the opponent and the only goal needed was again scored by Jen Woldrow. When you get that much production from the second leading scorer on the team, nothing but good rewards or wins can happen. Our Lady's Meghan Zapeic recorded her seventh shutout of the season in route to their 4-0 victory. |
College Soccer: Monday, October 18, 2004 By Mike Ballard Senior forward Mike Hannings played a huge role in keeping the Rutgers-Camden men's soccer team undefeated in a pair of key New Jersey Athletic Conference games last week. Hannings scored a goal in each game against William Paterson (Oct. 13) and Kean (Oct. 16), and both of them proved to be the winning goal. He notched the second goal in a 4-1 victory against Paterson and scored the game's lone goal in a 1-0 win over Kean to lift the Raptors to 12-0-4 overall and 4-0-2 in the NJAC. |
High School Soccer: Saturday, October 16, 2004 By Jason Brown There are still goals to achieve even late in a season when your team hasn't performed to the standards they know they can play. For both Sterling and Triton, they have been watching the leaders in their division come up with the wins they needed to stay on top. Today, the focus was on a different task of winning a game between two struggling programs. The Mustangs attempt of winning two straight games fell short as Sterling scored twice in the second half to come away with the shutout. |
College Soccer: Wednesday, October 13, 2004 By Mike Ballard Junior forward Jacci Giannone (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) scored her second goal with 7:32 remaining in the second overtime period as the Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team outlasted William Paterson University, 3-2, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Wednesday night. Giannone, who also assisted on a goal by senior forward Heather Greenwald (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford), knocked in the winning goal off a loose ball at the right post 2:28 into the final 10-minute overtime period. The goal, her ninth of the season, helped the Lady Raptors post their fourth straight win and raise their record to 11-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the NJAC. Paterson falls to 4-6-2 and 0-4-1. |
College Soccer: Wednesday, October 13, 2004 By Mike Ballard Senior midfielder Tom Magoffin (Sewell, NJ/The King's Christian School) scored two goals and freshman midfielder Pat Baldiserra (Milmay, NJ/Buena Regional) assisted on the first two goals of the game to power Rutgers University-Camden over William Paterson University, 4-1, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference men's soccer game here Wednesday night. The Scarlet Raptors extend their school-record undefeated streak to 15 games as they raise their record to 11-0-4 overall and 3-0-2 in the NJAC. Paterson falls to 2-12 and 0-6. |
High School Soccer: Tuesday, October 12, 2004 By Jerome Michaels There have been quite a few upsets so for this season and more were waiting to happen for the remainder of the season. Moorestown has had its share of close games but unfortunate for them, they have been on the losing side of those games. This time it would be the Pirates from Cinnaminson invading their territory looking to pick up another inter-league game. The Quakers would play their opponent tough through two halves, but again would come up short by two goals. Greg Zizik scored twice to pick up the 3-1 win. |
High School Soccer: Tuesday, October 12, 2004 By Susan Hall No matter how you look at it, winning games always create a nice atmosphere to play in. The confidence of knowing what it takes to put together a game plan by the coaching staff and executing it on the field can only help a team for the remainder of the season. Clayton has demonstrated that they have been working together enough to win their fourth game in a row. This time traveling to Gloucester City to take on the Lions, the Clashes posted a 3-1 victory on the road. |
High School Soccer: Monday, October 11, 2004 By Susan Hall When the schedule gives your team a chance to play the first place team in your division, it's an opportunity that the second place team relishes. Sacred Heart was that team looking up in the Cape-Atlantic Conference National Division II at Our Lady of Mercy. The reason Our Lady has been on top is because they have been winning the games they needed to remain in first place. With two goals in the first half, Our Lady was able to post the 3-1 victory to widen their lead in the division. |
High School Soccer: Saturday, October 9, 2004 By Jason Brown There are quiet a few good soccer teams in our area that has the talent and ability to win every game on their schedule. Most of the time, those teams can find a way to come together as a team to walk away with the victory. When it comes down to winning it all, it has been stated that offense wins games, but defense wins championships. So far this season, the boy's soccer team from Ocean City has demonstrated that they can play defense and has the ability of scoring goals. Four goals were scored against Cherry Hill East on Saturday and the defense did their part in preserving the 4-0 victory in a non-league game. |
High School Soccer: Friday, October 8, 2004 By Susan Hall For one half of the girls' soccer game between Haddonfield and Sterling, the outcome was not clear. Haddonfield hadn't loss a single game so far this season and they were only leading by a single goal to the end of the first half. The Lady Knights had put together a mini-winning streak and were looking for the big upset to extend that streak to three games. This game was the tale of two halves as Lady Bulldogs turned up the pressure scoring four more times. With Haddonfield's 6-1 victory, they would keep their undefeated record in tact. |
High School Soccer: Thursday, October 7, 2004 By Jerome Michaels The Crusaders were in unfamiliar territory and were looking to return home after losing their first two games of the season. Starting the season with seven wins in a row, the last two games for Bishop Eustace were ones to forget. Cherry Hill West and Shawnee were the two teams from the Patriot Division to defeat the Crusaders and Timber Creek was looking to make it their third from the same division. Bishop Eustace would be able to celebrate getting back on the winning side of the game with a 2-0 win. |
High School Soccer: Wednesday, October 6, 2004 By Jerome Michaels In any game when you find yourselves fighting an uphill battle, there are two possibilities to deal with your situation. You can just give up and let the other team dominate or put the score out of your mind and play hard until the final seconds. You couldn't tell that Haddon Heights was trailing in this game by their play on the field. The Hawks were able to jump ahead in this game to swing the momentum in their favor. Haddon Township's defense would be able to withstand the Garnets assault and preserve their 3-0 win. |
High School Soccer: Monday, October 4, 2004 By Susan Hall So far this season, the Lady Renegades soccer team from Shawnee has been enjoying a winning season sitting on top of the Olympic Conference Patriot division. Every competitive contest against a formable opponent proves how well the team works together on the field. So when Shawnee visited Bishop Eustace for an inter-conference match-up, it would be the Lady Crusaders whose team play turned the tables to pick up the victory. Eustace was able to build on their early lead to post the 3-1 win. |
High School Soccer: Friday, October 1, 2004 By Jerome Michaels Highland has gotten off to a quick start this season posting a very respectable 5-1-1 record in the Tri-County Conference Royal Division. With the Salem Rams boy's soccer team into town, the Tartans knew if they played well early, they could dominated the struggling Rams and not give them any momentum to build on. Using their speed and determination, the Tartans kept the pressure on the defenders looking for that momentum. Sean Mergenthal took care of that early in the game when his goal quickly put Highland ahead and eventually on their way to a 5-1 victory. |
High School Soccer: Thursday, September 30, 2004 By Stephanie Wright The girl's soccer team from Our Lady of Mercy Academy has gotten off to a good start winning five of their first six games. So far this season, the team has been successful in taking advantage of their opportunities. Those scoring chances have turned into goals and then into victories. In today's game against the Lady Panthers from Middle Township, OLMA completely out shot the Panthers by a 28-7 margin but were trailing by two goals heading into the second half. Two goals in the second have allowed OLMA to extend this Cape-Atlantic Conference game to one more deciding period. Maria Grady would score her 11th goal of the season in overtime to give OLMA the 3-2 come from behind victory. |
Soccer Spotlight: Thursday, September 30, 2004 By David Deal Philadelphia KiXX Executive Vice President/General Manager Greg Bibb announced today the acquisition of three players through the 2004 Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Dispersal Draft. On September 13, the MISL announced the Dallas Sidekicks will not participate in active play during the 2004-05 season, but that the League is working to return a Dallas entry to full-active status for the 2005-06 campaign. From the Sidekicks roster, Philadelphia acquired the rights to defender Kiley Couch, Ryan Trout, and midfielder Chris Goos. |
High School Soccer: Wednesday, September 29, 2004 By Susan Hall West Deptford took full advantage of their field position throughout this game. The Lady Eagles girl's soccer team kept Gateway's keeper Raschel Clark busy in the net. But with all of those scoring opportunities, the ball was bound to find the back of the net. By the end of this Colonial Conference game, seven goals were scored by West Deptford. Ashley Antczak and Stephanie Hitchner scored twice in this game to lead the Eagles' shutout triumph over the Gators. |
High School Soccer: Tuesday, September 28, 2004 By Stephanie Wright It's never easy starting out a season when most only give you a small chance of coming out on top of your division at the season's end. The Wildcats from St. Joseph have been selected as one of those talented teams that have a real good chance of winning the conference title. So when Our Lady of Mercy Academy was hosting the Wildcats, they knew they had to play above average especially with Tara Davies on the other team. Two players of their own have been scoring goals for Our Lady. Maria Grady and Jen Woldon both scored in this game while Meghan Zapeic earned her fourth shutout of the season. Our Lady went on the defeat St. Joseph 3-0. |
High School Soccer: Monday, September 27, 2004 By Susan Hall Every win counts but every lose has to sting a bit when your team is expected to come out on top of your division. For the Lady Indians from Lenape High School, the expectations are high and so far they haven't disappointed anyone yet. With a scoreless first half, it would come down to the team that could demonstrate the ability to come up with the big plays. Both teams would do so as this Olympic Conference girl's soccer game had to be decided in the overtime period. Lenape's Jamie Kunkel long distance shot found its way into the net giving the Indians the 2-1 victory. |
High School Soccer: Friday, September 24, 2004 By Crystal Parker The girl's soccer team from West Deptford went out on the field at Sterling High School and dominated the play both offensively and defensively. Head coach John Cobb was very actively instructing his team on their way to a 5-0 victory. Scoring chances were plentiful for the Lady Eagles as the early lead led to a team relaxed and playing smart for the rest of the game. Jenna Lindsay scored twice for the Eagles and Colleen Hee who played all but the final minutes of the game preserved the shutout. |
High School Soccer: Wednesday, September 22, 2004 By Susan Hall Finally with some nice weather in our area, there aren't any excuses for teams to execute their game plan. Field conditions are no longer in the way and players were able to find stable footing to put the ball in play. Standing in the way of the girl's soccer game between the Eagles from Paul VI and the Triton Mustangs was the stingy defense by both teams. It wasn't until three minutes remaining in this Olympic Conference competition that the lone goal was scored. Laureen Riiff provided the only goal the Lady Eagles needed to win this game. |
High School Soccer: Tuesday, September 21, 2004 By Jerome Michaels Looking at the schedule before the regular season began, the Rancocas Valley versus Moorestown match-up was an anticipated competition waiting to happen. The Burlington County Liberty Division defending champions Red Devils from Rancocas Valley were looking to repeat again, as long as they could prove they could get by their division rivals Quakers from Moorestown. Both teams have their "go to" players, but in this game, there are other players who come up big providing a way to win. Michael Koneschusky and Luke Calvano both score giving Moorestown the 2-0 victory. |
High School Soccer: Friday, September 17, 2004 By Susan Hall On Friday afternoon at Bishop Eustace, the girl's soccer match-up between the Crusaders hosting Washington Township took center stage. Both of these teams were undefeated in their first 4 games of the early season, but both teams are expected to go a long way into the post season. It wasn't until the second half of this game that the first goal was scored. Maria Fasolino put Washington Township ahead and then Andrea March scored the eventually game winner to advance their record to 3-0-1 with their 2-1 victory over the Lady Crusaders. |
High School Soccer: Saturday, September 11, 2004 By Vincent Lewis After a long summer break and the beginning of a new school year, it's now the time for athletics directors to ensure that every fall sport has everything it needs to compete at the highest level possible. During scheduled home games, you can find most directors roaming around from field to field providing assisting where necessary. There are some that you'll find watching the game as a fan with high hopes of their team coming away with the win. At Lindenwold High School, the Lions were hosting Woodstown in a non-league boy's soccer game. Derryk Sellers was that athletic director riding away happy as Lindenwold recorded a 3-2 decision behind the scoring of Edwin Maldanade and Jaime Flores. |
High School Soccer: Friday, September 10, 2004 By Jerome Michaels With the start of the soccer season, experts’ preseason predictions are usually thrown out the window with the multitude of upsets that occur. Most of the time, a team that has a number of talented juniors and seniors get recognized in the preseason rankings. So when a team “flies under the radar” and posts a win against a team that they weren’t suppose to win, it has all the makings of a very interesting season ahead. The Crusaders would find themselves down by a goal on their home field at the end of the first break, rallied to tie and then score the winning goal in the extra period when Kyle Miller scored his second goal of the game. |
Soccer Spotlight: Thursday, September 9, 2004 By David Deal Philadelphia KiXX Executive Vice President/General Manager Greg Bibb announced today the team will host the defending Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Champion Baltimore Blast for a preseason exhibition at the club’s annual “Meet the Team Party” on Tuesday, September 28.
