The beginning of the girl's South Jersey Group 2 soccer tournament began earlier today with two teams from the Colonial Conference Patriot Division. The eighth seeded Garnets from Haddon Heights were hosting the ninth seeded Hawks from Haddon Township in a first round girl's soccer game. Haddon Heights would get on the scoreboard first and maintain their lead throughout this game. Samantha Sharp scored twice for the Garnets as they advanced to the next round with their 3-1 win.
Last year, the Garnets were in a similar situation during the Group 2 playoffs. Seeded eight just like this year, Haddon Heights advanced to the next round. And just like last year, the top seeded Cinnaminson was waiting for them. Haddon Township did not qualify for the playoffs last year, but the year before that, the Hawks were the top seeded team but loss in the second round. Cinnaminson won it all that year and is trying to win their third South Jersey Group 2 title in a row.
The only goal scored in the first half was by Sharp and it was a momentum builder. Goalie Lisa Benedetti had a quiet day for the Garnets as the defense didn’t let too many scoring chance get by them. Meredith Kennedy doubled their lead in the second half driving the ball past the keeper and into the net and Sharp finished the scoring for Heights expanding their lead to 3-0. Township would avoid the shutout when Katie Bartels scored her goal.
