High School Soccer: Wednesday, October 20, 2004 By Stephanie Wright Each game is sometimes considered a test to see how well a team performs under certain circumstances. When Our Lady of Mercy traveled to Buena to compete in a girl’s soccer game, it would be against a team that has proven to themselves that they know how to win. The National Division I leaders had lived up to their success as they played a very exciting game against the Villagers. With the game tied at two goals apiece late in the second half, freshman Marybeth Scharle scored the winning game with a minute and twenty seconds remaining in the game. That goal gave the National Division II leaders the 3-2 victory. Our Lady took control of this game early with goals by Jess Woldrow and Maria Grady. Melanie Wescott scored to cut the lead in half for Buena. The Lady Chiefs were looking to extend their six game unbeaten streak. When the second half began, Buena tied this game on Katie Jean Vandzura’s goal. That only set up the heroics of Scharle whose goal late in the game extended Our Lady’s win streak to four games. Meghan Zapeic recorded 15 saves in the game. Georlisa Kirby had 7 saves in the game for Buena. |
