By Susan Hall
SJSports Special Correspondent

The start of the South Jersey Group 3 softball tournament would begin at Highland for the Lady Tartans were they would compete against their neighboring rival Triton Mustangs. Throughout the regular season, both teams have their stories to tell about how they were able to come away with a dramatic win. But that's now in the past and a new season was beginning and this time it was Highland who would take charge of this game with their bats. The Tartans would score at least a run in every inning except one during their first round action of the tournament play. Highland's quick start allowed them to defeat Triton by a 10-4 margin.

Williamstown's Late Rally Stuns Highland

Friday, May 4, 2007

By Susan Hall

Lately, there have been quite a few games that have demonstrated that a game is never over until the last out has been recorded. With that being said, no lead is safe no matter what inning the game is played in. The Lady Braves from Williamstown has been playing well this season and continues to win games keeping them among the leaders of the Tri-County Conference Royal Division. Not that far behind was the Tartans from Highland who held a two run lead heading into the final inning. That's when Williamstown finally produced some runs during the top of the seventh and rallied to defeat Highland by a 4-2 margin.

Matt Buonadonna scored four goals and Matt Owens and Joe Sauer added two goals each as Black Horse defeated Delran 10-7 in Tier 2 action played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. The first period was all offense and not much defense as the teams combined to score 9 goals. Buonadonna and Sauer both score just over two minutes into the game, and they were looking for more as they went on the power play, but a breakaway goal by Tyler Leary cut the lead to 2-1. Buonadonna got that goal back as he out-hustled the Delran defense to a loose puck and his quick wrist shot made it 3-1.

Anthony DeSimone netted a hat trick and Cory Jackmuff and Steve DeCeasar added two goals as West Deptford defeated Black Horse 9-5 in Tier 2 action at Hollydell. Black Horse skate with only eight players and rallied in the third period, but just ran out of gas. DeSimone scored the only goal of the first period as he hustled on a loose puck in the slot and beat the goalie to the puck and had an empty net to deposit the puck. Joe Sauer tied the game early in the second period for Black Horse scoring the first of his two goals, but West Deptford scored two goals over the next five minutes, one on a blast by JT Flood to take a 3-1 lead. Sauer cut the lead to 3-2, but DeCeasar put West Deptford ahead 4-2 scoring the first of his two goals.

Highland Edges Cumberland

Thursday, October 5, 2006

By Joyce Sagerty

The month of October is that time of the year where high school students are getting ready for cooler temperatures, school dances and homecoming events. It's also that time when soccer teams know that less than two weeks is the cutoff date to qualify for the state tournament. Hovering around the requirements to make it into the playoffs were the Lady Tartans from Highland soccer team. In an important Tri-County Conference Royal Division game against Cumberland, Highland would post a 2-1 victory and pull within one game of evening their record to the five hundred level.

Williamstown Takes Advantage on their Chances

Friday, September 29, 2006

By Jerome Michaels
SJSports Special Correspondent

Not too many people believe that soccer is one of those sports that can leave several players out of a game due to injuries, but it does happen. In a Tri-County Conference boys' soccer game played at Highland, the Braves from Williamstown were able to control most of this game against the short handed Tartans. After a closely played first half, Williamstown would put this game away during the second half. The Braves would pick up the 4-0 win and remain above the five hundred percentage mark for the season. Four different players would score for the Braves.

Williamstown's Defense Ends Late Rally

Saturday, September 23, 2006

By Clark Washington
SJSports Special Correspondent

For nearly the entire four quarters of Williamstown's football game at Highland, the defense had an answer in stopping the Tartans from scoring any points. The Braves would build a ten point advantage with less than a minute remaining and it appeared as if they would pick up their second win in a row. But a touchdown reception and the recovery of an onside kick setup Highland's last chance drive and attempt to pull out a victory at home. Williamstown's defense would come up big again with an interception and run off the final seconds of the game. With their 10-7 win, the Braves will remain on top of the Tri-County Conference Royal Division.

Thursday, September 21, 2006

By George Brookings

Clearview has started out their season capitalizing on their opportunities and it shows with the success they have been through. With four of their first five game played at home, the Pioneers have won every game to start out their season. Only their second road game played, the Tartans from Highland would be their next test. Clearview would get their first scoring chance redirected away and proved to be a momentum builder for the home team. Two quick goals by Highland proved to be enough for their defense to hold the Pioneers to a single goal. Clearview would rally, but the Tartans would survive and post a 2-1 victory.

There's something about attending school on a day when your school is hosting a playoff game. Highland would be hosting the second round of the South Jersey Group III boys' basketball tournament and the house was packed. The seventh seeded Panthers from Camden would bring their fans to this game looking to upset the second seeded Tartans. Trailing for the majority of this game through three full quarters, the Panthers began to convert on their second chance shots enabling them to propel past Highland. This has been a memorable season so far this season for the Tartans from Highland. For the first time in Coach Harold Little's coaching career, the Tartans have compiled a twenty game winning season and have been awarded the second seed in the upcoming South Jersey Group III bracket. Highland had won six of their last seven games and was looking to end the regular season on a winning note. The Tigers from South Plainfield would be their opponent and a slow start didn't faze the Tartans mission. Coach Little rotated his lineup throughout this game and the entire team would be rewarded with a 59-44 win over South Plainfield.

It would be two teams from Tier II that started off the playoffs for the SJHSIHL Friday night at the Hollydell Ice Arena. Both Highland and Cinnaminson were playing for the rights to advance to the next round during this single elimination game. It was quite noticeably that Frank Vannoni for Highland and Andy Poskus for Cinnaminson didn't want their team's season to end. With the game tied and less than a minute and a half remaining in regulation, Matthew Grennon's goal not only avoided overtime but also extended Cinnaminson's season. With both teams struggling offensively this year, Neumann is averaging two goals per game and Highland just over three, the game figured to be a defensive battle. Neumann carried the play for most of the first period, thanks in part to the power play as six of the seven penalties called were against Highland. Ocean City Ends Highland's Chances

This past season has been an impressive accomplishment for the boy's soccer team from Highland. At the beginning of the season, most would not have considered the Tartans as one of the top teams in the area. Mike Cullen, Joe Cullen and Tony LaVigna have led Highland deep into this year's South Jersey Group III semi-finals game with high hopes of making it to the title game. One team standing in the way were the number one seeded Red Raiders from Ocean City. Most have considered them the number one team in South Jersey and with Rafael Duarte, Kyle Evans and Pat Tolomeo leading the way, there's a reason why they are so good. The Red Raiders completely controlled this game from beginning to end and advanced to the finals with a 6-1 victory over Highland.

Storms would record ten strikeouts on the mound for Timber Creek, but the one hit he gave up would decide this quarterfinals game. Paul Painter would provide what seemed to be a harmless solo home run early in the game that turned out to being the biggest hit of the game.
