High School Baseball: Tuesday, May 22, 2007 By George Brookings No team enjoys losing, especially when a team has gotten used to winning. The Crusaders from Bishop Eustace had won 13 out of their last 15 games but were trying to snap a current two game losing streak. Jim Yezzo's first inning three run homerun highlighted a six run inning that put the Crusaders ahead of the Mustangs from Triton. Starting pitcher Chris Monaco only allowed one hit and Bishop Eustace would cruise to a 10-0 victory. |
High School Baseball: Monday, May 21, 2007 By Jerome Michaels There's a race for the title taking place and three teams, Seneca, Bishop Eustace and Camden Catholic are all in contention of claiming the Olympic Conference National Division title. Two of those teams met at Camden Catholic where the Fighting Irish was hosting the Crusaders from Bishop Eustace and both teams had the talent to win the big games when needed. Camden Catholic would use their home field advantage and belted four home runs to defeat their opponent. The Irish never trailed in this game and won by a 12-4 margin. |
High School Baseball: Wednesday, May 9, 2007 By Jerome Michaels During the season, most of the time a team plays an opponent two times from their division usually on their home field. The first time the Eagles from West Deptford hosted the Green Wave from Audubon, it was a pitcher's duel and West Deptford would hold onto an early lead. Both of these teams were looking to get back on the winning track as they would lose their previous game during their opponent's last at bat. This time at Audubon, the Green Wave would score in every inning except one and were not too hospitable as their six run fifth inning put this game out of reach. Audubon's Nate Cowan and Bob Chiarulli would highlight this game with a homerun each and the Wave would cruise to a 14-3 win. |
High School Baseball: Wednesday, May 2, 2007 By Jason Brown It was a baseball game between two teams who have found different ways of keep their winning streak in tact. So when those teams take the field to figure out who's the better team on this day, only the players on the field will determine the outcome. The Golden Eagles from Seneca traveled to Bishop Eustace to take on the Crusaders in what most have considered two of the top teams in our area. Seneca's early success produced enough runs for starting pitcher Dan Grovatt to work with. The Golden Eagles produced six runs during the first two innings and were able to keep Bishop Eustace off the scoreboard. Seneca would extend their current winning streak to six games with their 8-0 victory over the Crusaders. |
High School Baseball: Tuesday, May 1, 2007 By Jerome Michaels There are several key dates approaching that may have several teams realizing that the cutoff date to qualify for the upcoming state tournament is quickly approaching. The Lions from Cherry Hill West are one of those teams that need to take matters in their own hands if they want to extend their season into the post season. In a non-league baseball game, the Dragons from Kingsway visited Cherry Hill West. After being shutout in their previous game, the Lions rebounded behind starting pitcher Jason Kelmer and took control of this game. Cherry Hill West would stay above the five hundred percent mark by posting an 11-0 win against Kingsway. |

High School Baseball: Thursday, April 19, 2007 By Jerome Michaels The Chiefs from Cherokee are enjoying a season where their pitching staff has been coming through with some qualify innings. It appears that each time a pitcher steps onto the mound, not only are they limiting their opponents scoring chances but also their teammates have provided some run support. Starting his first game of the season, Ben Flanary pitched six innings for Cherokee helping his own cause with a two run homer against the Fighting Irish from Camden Catholic. Cherokee would cruise to their eighth consecutive victory when they picked up the 8-2 win at Camden Catholic. |
High School Baseball: Wednesday, April 18, 2007 By Jerome Michaels Baseball is that game that for many teams, it takes awhile to get started. Players on the field and at the plate sometimes need a couple of innings to occur before they get a feel for the game. The advantage the starting pitcher may have would be opposing batters need to see a few pitches before getting locked in at the plate. One player who seemed to be locked in early was Dan McGuckin for the Eagles from Winslow Township. With his second hit of the game, McGuckin cleared the bases with a grand slam giving Winslow a big lead that Cherry Hill West could not recover from. Jason Gladden had plenty of run support and picked up the 9-3 victory on the mound for the Eagles. |

High School Baseball: Wednesday, April 11, 2007 By Clark Washington It's a situation that most baseball players put themselves in and that is to come up to the plate with a chance to win the game for your team. When the Red Devils from Penns Grove held a one run lead at the start of the bottom of the sixth inning, Gloucester Catholic would get two runners on base with Matt Umba looking to pick up another key hit to drive in another run. This time, Umba nailed a three run homerun for the Rams to re-take the lead. Gloucester Catholic would give up a run during the seventh inning but they would come away with a 5-4 victory and pick up their third win of the season. |

High School Baseball: Thursday, May 25, 2006 By Jerome Michaels Baseball is that game where the entire team must come together collectively in order to walk off the field at the end of a game with the win. So far, and especially when it counts, the Fight Irish from Camden Catholic has been winning their games leading up to the South Jersey Non-Public Group A baseball tournament. Looking to put it all together during the post season, Camden Catholic jumped out to an early lead against ninth seeded St. Joseph Metuchen who had an agenda of their own. Watching their opponent rally to pull within a run, Camden Catholic would maintain their composure and advance to the next round with their 9-7 victory. High School Baseball: Wednesday, May 24, 2006 By Jerome Michaels If it wasn't for that uncharacteristic loss during the Diamond Classic, Gloucester Catholic wouldn't have to prove themselves again that they were the same team that won some many games. In the South Jersey Non-Public B bracket, the second seeded Rams were hosting Mater Dei who was the seventh seed. In a pitcher's duel that advanced to extra innings, starting pitcher Matt Blackburn knew he had to continue pitching well after giving up late in the game. Still on the mound after keeping Mater Dei off the scoreboard during their top half of the eighth inning, Gloucester Catholic was able to score the winning run off of an error. The Rams 3-2 victory now advances them to the semi-finals. |

High School Baseball: Monday, May 22, 2006 By Jerome Michaels There's always that expectation that the seeding designated for a team should determine the outcome of a game. The higher seed, in this case Audubon hosting Sterling, is the favorite to come away with the victory. Well the sixth seeded Green Wave from Audubon didn't disappoint the predictions when they took on the Silver Knights from Sterling who was the eleventh seed in the South Jersey Group 2 bracket. Three key hits during the bottom of the second inning proved to be the difference in this game as Audubon advanced to the next round with their 4-1 victory. High School Baseball: Wednesday, May 17, 2006 By Jerome Michaels When two teams with a six game winning streak competes against one another on the diamond, it's safe to say that one of those teams will have to lose. The Golden Eagles from Seneca traveled to Bishop Eustace in a battle between the top two teams from the Olympic Conference National Division. This game would be a classic version of October baseball being played at a high school level in the month of May. Good pitching and solid defense were just a few aspects of this game that both teams demonstrated on the field. Trailing by a run, Bishop Eustace would score twice during the bottom half of the fourth inning to go ahead of Seneca. The Crusaders would tact on an insurance run two innings later and defeat their opponent 4-2 and pick up the divisional title. |

High School Baseball: Friday, May 5, 2006 By Jason Brown Baseball can be a very interesting game where sometimes the bounces on the field just don't go your way. When those times occur, the main focus is to just get the outs in order to get through an inning. On the other side of the players' bench, there's a different feeling that the players don't want it to end. In a Colonial Conference game played at Audubon, the high flying Eagles from West Deptford were the recipients of everything going right for them. Starting pitcher Justin Hilt drove in seven runs with his bat and West Deptford cruised to a 22-6 win over Audubon. |

High School Baseball: Saturday, April 15, 2006 By Stu Franklin So far this season, the high school baseball season has seen its share of upsets leaving those who follow the game wondering if every game will be a difficult one. The good teams will easily put a loss behind them and take the season one game at a time. Others may find it hard to shake off a disappointing loss. In a non-league game played at Cherry Hill West, the visiting Blue Devils from Burlington had a couple of one run games that didn't go their way and the other that did. With their 7-4 victory over the Lions, Cherry Hill West evened their record to three wins and three losses. |
High School Baseball: Thursday, April 13, 2006 By Jerome Michaels It's very important, especially during the early part of the season, to pick up as many victories as a team can in order to keep up with the division leaders. A team will never know when and if a losing streak could happen, so winning those necessary games could cushion a fall if one does come around. In an Olympic Conference National Division baseball game played at Camden Catholic, the Fighting Irish would score early and often against the visiting Warriors from Camden County Vocational Tech. Starting pitcher Chris Dondarski would pick up the win on the mound for Camden Catholic. The Irish would defeat the Warriors by a 20-2 margin. |
South Jersey Baseball: Thursday, April 13, 2006 By Mark Fletcher After starting the season with seven consecutive losses on the road, the Phillies Single-A affiliate Lakewood BlueClaws returned home to FirstEnergy Park to take on the Delmarva Shorebirds in their home opener. Color Guard from Lakewood High School on the field and a playing of Toby Keith’s “American Soldier” complete with video on the giant screen and a fly over from McGuire Air Force Base. Fans then joined in the singing of both “The Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America.” |

High School Baseball: Tuesday, April 11, 2006 By Stu Franklin The Minutemen from Washington Township were enjoying a great start to their baseball season and you could see the players were enjoying every moment. High School Baseball: Monday, April 10, 2006 By Jerome Michaels At the end of this past weekend, we all were enjoying the spring time weather Mother Nature has finally blown our way. Baseball is just one of many indicators that warmer weather is on the way and everyone including the players can't help but to get excited about playing the game. In a Colonial Conference game against the Bulldogs from Haddonfield traveling to Collingswood, it would be a chance for these two teams to pick up an import conference win. Haddonfield would be that team convincingly enjoying their times at bat as they scored eight runs during the fifth and sixth inning and defeat the Panthers by an 11-0 margin. |

Burlington Township, Haddon Township, Lower Cape May and Timber Creek were the teams participating in this year's tournament. The preliminary round started off with Burlington Township taking on Timber Creek at one location and at the same time at another location, Haddon Township hosted Lower Cape May.
