McCurdy allowed three runs in two innings of work after starter Richard Stahl shutout the Thunder over the first five innings. |
South Jersey Baseball: Friday, June 10, 2005 By Dan Loney New Britain took advantage of two Thunder errors in the 6th Inning to score a pair runs and beat the Thunder, 2-1, on Friday night in Eastern League play. Trenton (31-29) took a 1-0 lead in the 6th Inning against New Britain starter Francisco Liriano. Kevin Thompson led off with a double, but was picked off 2nd Base. After a two-out walk to Thunder CF Melky Cabrera, a balk by Liriano moved Cabrera to 2nd Base. 1B Shelley Duncan followed with an RBI single for the lead. |
South Jersey Baseball: Tuesday, June 7, 2005 By Dan Loney Ramon Ramirez tossed six shutout innings, while Shelley Duncan added three hits and Kevin Thompson collected three RBI, as Trenton beat Erie, 11-2, on Tuesday night. The win is the fourth straight for the Thunder. In picking up the win, Trenton collected seven doubles and have 31 extra-base hits in their last four games. It is the first time since June 5-7, 2001 that the Thunder scored at least 10 runs in three striaght games. They scored their first two runs in the 2nd Inning on a ground out and fielder's choice against Erie starter Jeremy Johnson. |
South Jersey Baseball: Thursday, June 2, 2005 By Dan Loney Trenton got home runs from Shelley Duncan, Eric Duncan and Kevin Thompson to lead a 13-hit attack in a 7-4 win over Erie on Thursday night. The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Thunder. Trenton (27-27) saw Shelley Duncan start the 2nd Inning with a solo homer off Erie starter Virgil Vasquez for the early lead. It was Shelley's 14th home run of the year to give him the Eastern League lead. |
High School Baseball: Tuesday, May 31, 2005 By Jason Brown With the month of May down to its final day, most high school students have begun to count down the days until their summer break. For the baseball team from Delsea, a win on the last day of the month would propel them into the South Jersey Group 3 Finals. In order to advance into the month of June, the third seeded Crusaders traveled to Highland to take on the Tartans. Josh Sulzman delivered a two out bases clearing triple that highlighted a seven run second inning and Delsea never looked back. Starting pitcher Josh Krautwald also knocked in a couple of runs to help Delsea move into the finals with their 14-3 victory. |
High School Baseball: Friday, May 27, 2005 By Jason Brown It was a pitcher’s duel taking place at Highland High School between the seventh seeded Chargers from Timber Creek and the Tartans who were the second seed in the South Jersey Group 3 tournament. Ryan Buchter and Andrew Storms were the starting pitchers who were responsible for keeping the runners off the bases. Storms would record ten strikeouts on the mound for Timber Creek, but the one hit he gave up would decide this quarterfinals game. Paul Painter would provide what seemed to be a harmless solo home run early in the game that turned out to being the biggest hit of the game. That run would be more than enough support for Buchter to work with as Highland would advance to the next round of the playoffs. |
High School Baseball: Thursday, May 19, 2005 By Jerome Michaels It was once said that no team should be considered an easy win when it comes to the sport of baseball. A good example of this was when the Wildcats from Maple Shade traveled to Burlington City to participate in a Burlington Conference Patriot Division game. Two teams that were heading in to different directions started out with Maple Shade holding a one run lead through five and a half innings. The second place Blue Devils responded by taking the lead during their bottom half of the inning and maintained that lead until the very next inning. When the final out of this game was recorded, Burlington City had recorded an 11-7 win over Maple Shade. |
South Jersey Baseball: Wednesday, May 18, 2005 By Dan Loney PH Omir Santos was hit by a Jamie Vermilyea pitch with the bases loaded in the 13th Inning which gave the Trenton Thunder an 8-7 win in Eastern League play on Wednesday afternoon. The win moved the Thunder into sole possession of 2nd Place in the Northern Division. Shelley Duncan, who scored the winning run, led the offense with three hits and three RBI. |
High School Baseball: Tuesday, May 17, 2005 By Jerome Michaels Burlington Township has been trying to prove that they deserve to be sitting on top of the Burlington County Liberty Division. No opponent should be considered an easy win when it comes to a sport that needs all the players on the field contribute to a victory. The Falcons would be tested today against a very good Florence team who represented the Freedom Division. Burlington Township wasted little time scoring runs as they sent fourteen batters to the plate in the first inning that resulted in an eleven run lead. Florence would rally during their next at bat, but the early success by the Falcons was too much for their opponent to overcome. Burlington Township would extend their winning streak to two games with their 13-8 victory. |
High School Baseball: Tuesday, May 17, 2005 By Jason Brown Baseball is a very interesting game. On any given day, playing sound baseball with good pitching and solid defense, no team could be considered the favorite. Okay, sometimes those occasional bad hops and sometimes a key call at the plate don’t go a team’s way that could factor in the decision. The Eastern baseball squad has proven to be one of the best teams in our area by climbing to the top of their division. Camden Catholic was looking to win fourth out of their last five games against the visiting Vikings. The Fighting Irish would battle back from a three run deficit to score the winning run during their last at bat. Dave Kittle would score the winning run for Camden Catholic giving the Irish the 7-6 decision over Eastern. |
South Jersey Baseball: Tuesday, May 17, 2005 By Dan Loney Matt DeSalvo allowed one run over six innings for his third straight win and Dee Brown's three-run home run capped a five-run 5th Inning in Trenton's 5-1 win over New Hampshire in Eastern League play. DeSalvo (4-1), who won the Eastern League's "Pitcher of the Week" award yesterday, saw his consecutive scorless innings streak end at 20 2/3 when a wild pitch plated a run for New Hampshire (19-17). DeSalvo worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the 4th Inning and gave up five hits on the night. He walked four and struck out six. |
High School Baseball: Sunday, May 15, 2005 By Jason Brown The Michael Dengler Tournament was held at Florence this year and the undefeated Lancers from Holy Cross was the team most focused on to see if they would extend their streak to twenty-two games without a loss. An impressive come from behind win yesterday over Florence advanced the Lancers into the finals against the Fighting Clan from Vineland. It would be a rematch from last year and Vineland was looking to defeat the defending champs of this tournament. John Vasquez took the responsibility of trying to slow down the high powered Lancers and was successful. Vineland’s two run second inning were all the runs Vasquez needed as Vineland would had Holy Cross their first loss of the season by posting a 7-0 victory. |
South Jersey Baseball: Thursday, May 12, 2005 By Dan Loney Carlos Leon delivered an RBI triple in the 11th Inning to help the Reading Phillies to a 4-3 win over Trenton in Eastern League play. The game was the longest of the season for both teams at 3 hours, 47 minutes. Reading (15-19) jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a two-run homer by LF Ryan Fleming off Thunder starter Danny Borrell in the 3rd Inning. 1B Randy Ruiz added a solo homer in the 5th Inning, his 7th of the season. Borrell allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings in his second start with Trenton. |
South Jersey Baseball: Wednesday, May 11, 2005 By Dan Loney Matt DeSalvo tossed eight shutout innings of one-hit baseball as the Thunder beat Reading, 11-2, on Wednesday night in Eastern League play. DeSalvo has now worked 15 consecutive scoreless innings. DeSalvo (3-1), who blanked Bowie over seven innings six days ago, allowed just a bunt hit to Reading SS Carlos Leon in the 3rd Inning. But a double play erased that runner. In fact, DeSalvo faced the minimum amount of batters over eight innings (24). He tied his career high in strikeouts with 11 in the game. |
High School Baseball: Tuesday, May 10, 2005 By Jerome Michaels With the game tied at one apiece through five full innings, Bishop Eustace and Cherry Hill West needed to find a way to produce runs over the final two innings. Both teams would be successful scoring runs, but this game would be decided by the team scoring more runs than the other. The Crusaders would widen their one run game when Bill Rowell highlighted the top of the seventh inning with a three run homerun. Bishop Eustace would pick up the Olympic Conference win with an 8-4 victory at Cherry Hill West. |
South Jersey Baseball: Tuesday, May 10, 2005 By Dan Loney Reading broke a 1-1 tie with five runs in the 6th Inning and three more in the 7th inning in a 9-3 win over the Thunder on Tuesday night in Eastern League play. Reading (14-18) was held to one run over the first five innings by Trenton starter Jeff Karstens. But they started the sixth with a single by CF Michael Bourn. After a single by RF Chris Roberson, and error by Karstens loaded the bases. 1B Randy Ruiz produced a run on a groundout followed by an RBI single from DH Jim Descahine and a two-run double by 3B Juan Richardson. Karstens (4-3) allowed six runs (four earned) on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings in the loss. |
South Jersey Baseball: Monday, May 9, 2005 By Dan Loney Reading scored five times against Thunder starter Ramon Ramirez in the first three innings and then held on to a 5-3 win over Trenton on Monday night in Eastern League play. The loss snapped Trenton's five game winning streak. Reading (13-18) used a pair of two-out hits in the 1st Inning to grab the lead. 1B Randy Ruiz singled home LF Ryan Fleming for a 1-0 lead. It was Ruiz's 20th RBI in his 16 games with Reading. The lead ran to 3-0 in the 2nd Inning on a two-run homer by 2B Brian Hitchcox. DH Jim Deschaine added a two-run double in the 3rd Inning for a 5-0 lead. Ramirez (0-1) was charged with five runs on seven hits in three innings in the loss. |
College Baseball: Monday, May 9, 2005 By Mike Ballard The Scarlet Raptors ended their season with a 28-11 record after posting a 1-2 mark in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Baseball Championships May 4-7, but the victory was one of epic proportions. Rutgers-Camden rallied from a 5-1 deficit, including three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to stun top-ranked Kean and previously-undefeated Mike Battista, 6-5, on May 6. The Raptors’ season ended the next day with a 5-1 loss against Montclair State University. The Raptors opened the NJAC playoffs with a 5-2 defeat at Rowan University May 4. |
South Jersey Baseball: Sunday, May 8, 2005 By Dan Loney The Thunder claimed their fifth win in a row with an 8-6 come-from-behind effort over altoona on Sunday afternoon. The win pushes Trenton (16-15) over the .500 plateau for the first time since April 9th. The Curve (13-14) jumped out to a 6-2 lead off Trenton starter Matt Smith. They tagged him for six runs (four earned) on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings. The Thunder committed three errors behind him in the early parts of the game. |
South Jersey Baseball: Saturday, May 7, 2005 By Dan Loney Melky Cabrera's two-run single capped a four-run Thunder rally in a 5-2 win over the Altoona Curve on Saturday afternoon. The win was the fourth in a row for Trenton (15-15). The Thunder grabbed the early lead on an Eric Verbryke RBI single in the 2nd Inning, but Curve starter Hansel Izquierdo kept Trenton in check. He allowed one run in six innings and left the game with a 2-1 lead. Izquierdo walked two and struck out three. |
High School Baseball: Friday, May 6, 2005 By Jerome Michaels It’s never easy to go a complete season without losing a single game, but when that rare occasion does occur that team should be highly rewarded with recognition of a job well done. Eastern’s baseball team had the staff and the players with the potential of going undefeated but loss their first game of the season to Cherokee two days ago. That loss was not a good sign for Bishop Eustace as Eastern would get that winning feeling flowing through the entire team. Pat Monaghan started the game on the mound for the Vikings and knocked in two runs with a triple to help Eastern pull away from their opponent. Eastern posted a 9-2 decision in an inter-Olympic Conference game. |
South Jersey Baseball: Friday, May 6, 2005 By Dan Loney Omir Santos picked up his first two-homer game of his career and drove in five runs as the Thunder beat Altoona, 16-3, in Eastern League play. The win was the third straight for Trenton. The Thunder (14-15), now within four games of 1st Place, jumped on Curve starter Matt Peterson for eight runs in three innings. 3B Eric Duncan put the Thunder up with a two-out, two-run double in the 1st Inning. Three more runs in the 2nd Inning, including an RBI triple by DH Yobal Duenas and an infield RBI hit by Kevin Thompson, gave Trenton a 5-1 lead. |
College Baseball: Monday, May 2, 2005 By Mike Ballard Senior ace Matt Ulmer earns his second Raptor of the Week honor this season after breaking a 45-year-old baseball record for career wins at Rutgers-Camden. Ulmer tossed an eight-hitter, walking one and striking out seven, in a 2-1 victory at Richard Stockton College April 29. He didn’t allow an earned run as he posted his 18th career victory, breaking the mark of 17 set by Gar Miller (1957-60). Ulmer, who also earned Raptor of the Week honors on April 11, raised his record to 6-0 and lowered his ERA to 2.98. |
South Jersey Baseball: Sunday, May 1, 2005 By Dan Loney A balanced Trenton attack led to a season-high 14 hits and a 9-5 win over the Altoona Curve on Sunday afternoon in Eastern League play. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Thunder. After retiring the sides quickly in the 1st Inning, both starters, Trenton's Jon Skaggs and Altoona's Hansel Izquierdo, allowed four runs in the 2nd Inning. Trenton (11-13) got a RBI triple from CF Melky Cabrera, a RBI single by SS Andy Cannizaro and a two-run single from 2B Gabe Lopez for a 4-0 lead. But Altoona (10-10) responded with a homer by 1B Brad Eldred, his league-leading 11th of the season, a bases loaded walk and a two-run single by RF Vic Buttler to tie the game. |
High School Baseball: Thursday, April 28, 2005 By Jerome Michaels There are those days when a batter stands up at the plate and every pitch looks as if the ball is big as a beach ball. No matter whether the pitch is low and inside or high around the chin, the batter locks in and sends the baseball into open spaces. When Northern Burlington traveled to Moorestown to participate in a Burlington County Liberty Division game, both teams were looking to continue or get back on the winning side of a game. The Moorestown players spent the first two innings sending six players across home plate to jump out to a lead they would never relinquish. Kurt Heim only allowed two hits and completed the game on the mound for the 9-2 victory. |
High School Baseball: Tuesday, April 26, 2005 By Jerome Michaels What a difference a year makes? Instead of looking up in the standings, the Falcons’ baseball team is on top of the Burlington County Liberty Division. With most of their victories coming from outside of their division, Burlington Township was looking to pick up another win against the Pirates from Cinnaminson. Both starting pitchers for each team did extremely well on the mound for their team. Eric Gertie only gave up two hits, but it would be Ross Dempsey who would get the win for Falcons. Taking advantage of the situation presented to them, a key double by Tim Stevens knocked in the only run of the game and extend Burlington Township’s winning streak to seven games in a row. |
College Baseball: Monday, April 25, 2005 By Mike Ballard Senior reliever Matt Novella earned saves in all three of his appearances last week, including a win over FDU-Florham April 19 and a doubleheader sweep of William Paterson April 24. He worked 2-1/3 innings overall, allowing two hits, no runs, no walks and striking out two. The saves gave him eight for the season, breaking Dan McKenna’s old program mark of six, set in 2002. Novella also extended his career records to 12 saves and 59 appearances. |
South Jersey Baseball: Sunday, April 24, 2005 By Dan Loney Matt DeSalvo and two relievers combined on a three-hitter as the Thunder completed a four-game sweep of New Britain in a 5-0 win on Sunday afternoon. The win was the sixth in a row for Trenton (9-9). Desalvo (1-0) tossed 5 2/3 innings of shutout ball to earn the victory. He allowed just two hits and struck out six, but did walk five batters on the afternoon. Matt Smith came on to work 1 1/3 innings scoreless. Ben Julianel finished up with two scoreless innings. Thunder pitchers held the Rock Cats (7-10) to three runs and 20 hits in the four-game series, and have now allowed just three runs in their last 39 innings. |
High School Baseball: Saturday, April 23, 2005 By Jason Brown This year was another chance for Overbrook to repeat as champions of the Hammonton Baseball Tournament. It would be a good start as they took on the host Blue Devils in the preliminary round. The Rams’ players were successful finding open spaces as the team finished the game with sixteen hits. Rams starting pitcher Jim Birmingham watched his team score five runs in the first two innings and that was more than enough to advance to the final round with their 13-1 victory. But the championship game against Ewing was a different story as the defense was victimized by six errors in a 10-7 loss. |
South Jersey Baseball: Saturday, April 23, 2005 By Dan Loney Jeff Karstens and Justin Pope combined on a five-hitter in a 2-1 Trenton win over New Britain on Saturday afternoon. The win was the fifth straight for the Thunder (8-9). The 2-1 victory took just 1 hour 52 minutes to complete, which is the fastest 9-Inning game in the 12-year history of Waterfront Park. The previous record was 1 hour 56 minutes, set on July 30, 2004, when Pope pitched a 1-hit shutout in a 2-0 win over Norwich. |
South Jersey Baseball: Friday, April 22, 2005 By Dan Loney Shelley Duncan's second grand slam of the week capped a seven-run 7th Inning to power the Trenton Thunder to a 9-2 win over New Britain in Eastern League play on Friday night. The win was the fourth straight for the Thunder. Trenton (7-9) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st Inning thanks to "The Duncan's". 3B Eric Duncan's RBI double scored 2B Gabe Lopez for a 1-0 lead. Shelley Duncan followed with an RBI single for a 2-0 lead. New Britain (7-8) got a run back in the 3rd Inning off Thunder starter Eric Schmitt, but the score remianed that way until the 7th Inning. |
High School Baseball: Thursday, April 21, 2005 By Jason Brown The Golden Eagles from Seneca have so far demonstrated what it takes to win games. Good defense, solid pitching and key hitting are three of many aspects of the game that will reward the coaching staff with a team victory. On this day, the Chiefs from Cherokee were the visiting team looking to end Seneca’s ten game winning streak in an Olympic Conference match-up. Starting pitcher Ryan Brecko would pitch a complete game for the Golden Eagles giving up just two run and striking out eight batters. A three run sixth inning finally decided this close game for Seneca as they extended their winning streak with a 6-2 decision. |
High School Baseball: Wednesday, April 20, 2005 By Jerome Michaels This game was a preview of what could happen again in the playoffs. Pennsville and Gloucester met during last year’s group championship game with the Eagles winning by four runs over top seeded Gloucester. Both teams are expected to return to the final game, but there was a regular season standing in their way. Proving that they are better than the team that captured the Tri-County Conference Classic Division title, Pennsville expanded a three run advantage by scoring ten runs in the sixth to pick up the 18-6 victory at Gloucester. |
College Baseball: Monday, April 18, 2005 By Mike Ballard The week started on a tough note for the Rutgers-Camden baseball team in a 20-6 loss at Gwynedd-Mercy College April 12, but the Scarlet Raptors went 4-1 the rest of the way, including a 2-for-3 weekend road performance against nationally-ranked New Jersey Athletic Conference teams, No. 14 The College of New Jersey and No. 17 Kean University. Senior pitchers Matt Ulmer and Matt Novella combined to beat a nationally-ranked team for the second consecutive Friday and senior right fielder Ed McDonnell singled home the winning run with one out in the 10th inning as the Raptors edged No. 14 The College of New Jersey, 4-3, in 10 innings April 15. |
High School Baseball: Friday, April 15, 2005 By Jerome Michaels Five times the players from Sterling greeted someone at home plate in celebration of a homerun. Two of those homerun celebrations occurred during the first inning thanks to Steve Williams and Chris Cook. With that much excitement occurring during the Silver Knights game at Gateway, one would expect Sterling to extend their winning streak to seven games in a row. A seven run first inning was more than enough for starting pitcher Drew Slickmeyer to pick up the win and a 10-1 victory over the Gators in a Colonial Conference competition. |
High School Baseball: Tuesday, April 12, 2005 By Jerome Michaels Both Clearview and Highland were successful making the playoff last year and it would be safe to say that they wanted to get back there again this season. Yes it’s early, but it looks as if they both will finish the season with a record good enough to qualify. Both of these teams have the pitching and the defense to move far up the Tri-County Conference Royal Division. Clearview had won its first two games but would not win that next game as the Tartans’ bats came alive during the third and fourth innings. Starting pitcher Ryan Buchter watched three of his teammates Paul Painter, Dan Grandrino and Pat Faulls knock in three runs each to earn him the win and a 13-3 victory. |
College Baseball: Monday, April 11, 2005 By Mike Ballard During a week with several outstanding candidates for Raptor of the Week, senior pitcher Matt Ulmer earns the honor after hurling 8-1/3 strong innings to lead the Rutgers-Camden baseball team to a 5-2 victory April 8 over the nation’s top-ranked team, previously-undefeated Rowan University. Ulmer, who improved his record to 4-0 and lowered his ERA to 2.95, walked one, struck out two and allowed six hits and two earned runs against the hard-hitting Profs. It was his 16th career win, one shy of the program record. |
High School Baseball: Saturday, April 9, 2005 By Jerome Michaels Chris Rollins had most of his pitches working for him when he took the mound against Atlantic City Saturday morning at Winslow Township. With a lively fast ball mixed in with an occasional curve ball, Rollins was able to strikeout 16 batters over seven innings. But pitching alone will not win games and that was true facing the Vikings in a non-league game. Atlantic City did have their chances to score but the defense for Township came up big and that defense would include Rollins on the mound. A single run in the first and fifth innings was enough Winslow Township to outlast their opponent by one, 2-1. |
High School Baseball: Thursday, April 7, 2005 By Jason Brown Talking about seeing the baseball, the Crusaders from Bishop Eustace used the most of their hits to its fullest during the Robert Shaw Baseball Tournament. Bishop Eustace received back to back home runs from Bill Rowell and Rob Traister while Jay Gallen also slammed home a shot during the third inning to highlight the 10 run second inning. When the game was completed, five players from the Crusaders took advantage of the wind blowing out in left field to easily roll past Audubon 18-4. Jason Miller was the winning pitcher for Bishop Eustace. |
South Jersey Baseball: Tuesday, April 5, 2005 By Bill Cook The Trenton Thunder, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, announced today that Waterfront Park in Trenton will serve as a collection point for cleaning supplies to be donated to the victims who were evacuated from their homes due to the recent Delaware River flooding in Bucks County, PA and Mercer County, NJ. Anyone who makes a donation will receive the opportunity to buy one ticket and get one free ticket (good for the games on April 12-14, 21, 26-27). The team is also offering anyone who was evacuated from their homes complimentary tickets for their families to attend a Thunder game on Tuesday, April 12, Wednesday, April 13 or Thursday, April 14 (proof of residence is required). |
High School Baseball: Monday, April 4, 2005 By Jason Brown It's always nice to know that when it counts, all nine players on the field can depend on one another to come away with the win. Each game a different person or persons come up big with that key hit to propels the past their opponent. At the start of a game played at West Deptford, Audubon and the host Eagles were both successful scoring runs early. With Audubon holding onto a one run lead, Jake Brownell’s three run home run during the bottom of the fifth inning highlighted a six run inning to take the lead for good. West Deptford picked up the 15-7 victory in a Colonial Conference competition. |
High School Baseball: Monday, April 4, 2005 By Jerome Michaels The Olympic Conference battle between Camden Catholic and Cherry Hill West was a classic example of using your last at bats when it counts. Six lead changes, four doubles, one triple and a homerun had all of the makings of a dramatic win. With Camden Catholic regaining the lead by one run during their top half of the seventh inning, the Lions used their last at bat to the fullest. West not only tied the game, they also were able to pull out the victory when Frank Schmidt’s single drove home the winning run. Cherry Hill West won their first game of the early season by a 5-4 margin. |

College Baseball: Monday, March 28, 2005 By Mike Ballard Sophomore pitcher Jason Ronca threw no-hit ball for 6-1/3 innings and finished with a three-hitter over 7-2/3 innings during a 5-2 victory over Gwynedd-Mercy College March 22. Ronca allowed just two earned runs, both in the eighth inning, had five walks and struck out nine. With the victory, he raised his record to 2-0. He owns. a 1.23 ERA in 14-2/3 innings this season. Pitching, timely hitting and opportunistic play led the Rutgers-Camden baseball team to a 3-0 week in its return to Campbell’s Field, stretching the Raptors’ winning streak to six games. Rutgers-Camden, which has won 10 of its last 11 games, improved to 11-2. |

The program is entering its’ 11th year and has raised over a half million dollars for children on the Jersey Shore and in the greater Trenton area. |
College Baseball: Monday, March 14, 2005 By Mike Ballard It didn’t take Nick Faragasso long to make the transition to Rutgers-Camden baseball. In his first five games with the Raptors since transferring from Div. II University of New Haven (CT), the junior second baseman hit .500 (10-for-20) with three runs and eight RBIs.
