![]() High School Football: Saturday, July 8, 2000 By Art Redd The third annual Governor's Bowl Football Classic between the graduating all-stars from New Jersey and New York was held on a perfect Saturday afternoon. This year's meeting was on the historic campus of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. Some of the on campus cadets witnessed the New Jersey all-stars keeping the Governor's Bowl Cup in the Garden State with a 48 -7 trashing of the all-stars from New York. |
![]() High School Football: Saturday, July 8, 2000 By Art Redd The state of New Jersey was well represented in the third annual Governor's Bowl All-State Classic football game on the campus of the US Military Academy at West Point. With the game being played in the state of New York, home field advantage was taken away with the Garden State defense. Eastern defensive back Adam Taliaferro, the game's defensive MVP for New Jersey, dominated his position by forcing the New York offense to throw away from his side of the field. Taliaferro was well represented with his family in the crowd and South Jersey proudly cheering him on. |

Ron Dayne graduated from Overbrook in 1996, and went on to become the All Time leading rusher for NCAA Division 1A with 6397 yards at Wisconsin. Ron also won the Maxwell Award for the outstanding college football player, and the Grand Daddy of them all, the Heisman Trophy.

By Kristi Clark Sitting across from six-foot-four Rowan Hall of Famer, Mr. Felton Jones, it's hard to believe that he was ever challenged in sports.
"I'm what you call a late bloomer," he explains, settling back in his chair. "I went to college to play baseball. I could hit any ball, but I was only so-so in football. As I got better, I began to love football."

Whenever you hear the word "touchdown", several images come to mind. One could be the quarterback dropping back for a touchdown pass or a spectacular run that sends the fans out of their seats. In order for those plays to happen, the responsibility starts with those guys at the front line. The offensive line from Camden Catholic represent all linemen who rarely get recognized for a job well done after that scoring drive.

On a chilly, misty, and dreary morning, a rivalry of high school football took place this past Thanksgiving Day. Overbrook and Edgewood are sister schools in the Lower Camden County Regional District and have a great rivalry. Some of Overbrook's coaching staff either taught, coached, and/or are Alumni of Edgewood.

On an unseasonably mild but perfect afternoon for playoff football, the Eastern Vikings and Jackson Jaguars squared off in a classic Group IV semifinal battle. Eastern would end up winning this rock'em, sock'em game by a 13-7 score, but not before buckling down to fend off a furious Jaguars comeback.

Yes, there was a lot of football being played in the South Jersey area on Saturday at West Deptford. With the beginning of the area high school football playoffs, there would be a tendency to forget about the semi-pro football championship game being played. Those who attended the game got to watch area high school "graduates" play in an intense game that resembles the NFL. The West Deptford Broncos captured the 1999 Mason Dixon Football League Title with a 35-12 thrashing of the Central Virginia Storm.

If you were in the Cherry Hill area and smelled smoke on Saturday afternoon, it came from Camden Catholic High School. Not only were smoked sausages being cooked on the barbecue grill, but also the Irish football team was smokin' their opponents on the gridiron. Camden Catholic got to host the quarterfinal state Parochial Group 3 playoff game against Paramus Catholic. The Irish defense didn't allow a touchdown in their 20-6 win.

On a blustery night here at Eastern Stadium, the Vikings of Eastern and the Renegades of Shawnee treated a packed house of 3,000 gridiron fans to a fabulous playoff battle. In the end, Eastern came out victorious with a 34-19 score. The victory pushes Eastern into the state semifinals versus Jackson next week. The Vikings (9-0) had to fight long and hard against the spirited Renegades to keep their record perfect. Many a fan strapped themselves in expecting a duplicate of these two teams' first matchup, a record shattering 61-41 Viking win. They would not be disappointed with this game.

There is a class AAA semi-pro football team representing South Jersey in the Mason Dixon Football League. They are from West Deptford and are called the Broncos. With an impressive 11-0 regular season record in their first year in the league, the Broncos finished first in their division and were going up against the well-established Arbutus "Big Red" from Baltimore, MD. West Deptford had little problem in this playoff game, showing their dominance by posting a 33-7 victory to advance to the finals against the Central Virginia Storm.

The new head coach of Edgewood, Coach Derryk Sellers, said that he wanted to bring back some of the tradition of Edgewood football, and he did. In early September, he went into the gym, looked up at the banners, and saw that in 1969 the football team was 9-0. He went to the Athletic Director, Mr. Frank Panhuise, and asked if the school could bring back the players from that 1969 team.

It was a very warm day, the sun was shining, and it was Homecoming for Edgewood High School. What a great day for Homecoming, and to honor the 9-0 Football Team from 1969. It should have been an easy day for Edgewood, but Bishop Eustace did their best to not let that happen.

The meeting between the Pennsauken Indians visiting the Overbrook Rams was a very important game with the playoffs coming up soon. This game got little attention, but was a big game for both of these teams. Each team had something to gain in this Olympic Conference matchup. The Rams needed this game to stay alive for the playoffs. After an extremely close and defensive first half, one big play proved to be the key to Pennsauken defeating the Rams 14-6 to capture the Patriot Division championship.

The game with the Fighting Irish of Camden Catholic hosting the Vikings of Eastern High School did go as expected on Saturday afternoon. To the surprise of everyone, Camden Catholic had stunned their opponents by going into the locker room at the half leading by one. The Vikings came out in the second half and score fourteen unanswered points to defeat the Irish 27-14.

The Edgewood Eagles defense, led by Roger Brown and Chris Catania, struck early and often. On Cherry Hill West's second possession, Eagles' cornerback Roger Brown picked up a fumble and raced 30 yards for the score, giving the Eagles a 14-0 lead early in the first quarter. On the Lions' following offensive series, Eagles' linebacker Chris Catania scooped up another Cherry Hill West fumble and used a nifty cutback move and outran his pursuers, giving Edgewood a 21-0 lead.

In the feature game of the week and living up to its high billing, the Eastern Vikings edged the Lenape Indians 36-32 as both teams treated the 5000 fans in attendance to a highly entertaining game. Lenape began the scoring on a 44-yard burst up the middle by Mike Ceroli (one of his 5 TD's on the night.) Eastern would come right back on their next possession to take a 7-6 lead. Adam Taliaferro took the option pitch and darted in from 13 yards out. A John Riggins-like one-handed catch out of the backfield sparked the drive by Taliaferro, which picked up a key first down.

Today's lesson of the day was to study hard and you will succeed in life. Most of South Jersey's High Schools were busy taking the Scholastic Achievement Test this morning and pushed those classic football battles into the afternoon. It seemed as if Highland did their homework on their opponents as they were in control the whole game. The Tartans eliminated all of the Edgewood Eagles' strengths and went on to a 24-9 Olympic Conference Patriot Division victory.

These are dark days indeed for the Cherokee faithful. Not since the dark ages when the Rheumatic fever ran amuck, or the crash of Wall Street, or somebody grabbing that last burger off of the grill, have things looked so bleak for the Cherokee Chiefs. On the other hand, the newly ranked and well-deserved Eastern Vikings put on a dazzling display of football to showcase their success. Eastern dominated the Chiefs, here in Evesham, by notching their forth victory of the year with a powerful 49-7 victory.
