The Group 4 final was held at Rutgers Stadium in New Brunswick, which just added to the "big game" feel of this contest. The Shawnee Renegades had upset Eastern and Cherokee to get to this game, and were looking for a third upset. The Overbrook Rams had their own goal of a 12-0 perfect season. It took an improvised play with 0:27 left on the clock, as Rams' quarterback Byron Brown threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Jon Scialabba which broke a 14-14 tie to win the game.

The Deptford Spartans (8-3) visited the Gloucester City Lions (11-0) in the Group 2 championship game. The Lions were heavily favored, and were looking to complete an undefeated season. But the Spartans had already taken care of Moorestown and Haddon Heights (the third and second seeds) to reach this game, and were ready to play the first seeded Lions. The Deptford defense shut down the Lions' high powered offense, cruising to the title with an impressive 21-0 victory.

Holy Cross and Moorestown were tied atop the Burlington County Library Division. Their traditional Thanksgiving Day game was move to Saturday due to divisional playoffs. The intensity of this rivalry showed, as strange penalties and strange plays showed poor judgment on both sides of the field. Holy Cross may have won this one, 48-28 over the Quakers, but both teams should be embarrassed by their behavior.

The traditional Thanksgiving games for South Jersey high school football continued on Saturday. The Deptford Spartans hosted the Gloucester Catholic Rams in a Tri-County Royal Divisional game. With the Spartans playing next Saturday in the Group 2 finals against Gloucester City, this would be a tune-up game. But, it was not an easy game for them, as the Rams gave the Spartans all they could handle. Deptford broke a 7 all tie late in the fourth quarter to finally defeat the Rams 14-7.

The seventh-seeded Millville Thunderbolts came to Overbrook looking to upset the top-seeded Rams in the Group 4 semifinals. Millville had upset then undefeated Ocean City just two weeks earlier. But this Overbrook team was on a mission, and their defense stepped up to keep the Thunderbolts' from scoring until there was only 45 seconds left in the game. The Rams moved on to the finals with a 21-6 victory.

Who said high school football was not exciting and full of surprises? In a contest with the Shawnee Renegades at the Cherokee Chiefs, the second half of this game proved to be the most exciting half for the home crowd. Finally getting something to cheer about and keeping themselves warm, the crowd watched the Chiefs try to erase a 22 point deficit. But the Renegades defense came up big and held off Cherokee for a 22-15 victory in a South Jersey Group 4 semifinal game.

There was plenty of action going on at Haddon Heights High School where a Group 2 semifinal football game took place. The Garnets of Haddon Heights jumped out to an early lead only to see it disappear. The Deptford Spartans did not panic when they were down 14 points in the first half. They managed to stick to their controlled ball game and defeated Haddon Heights 18-14.

Two teams that rarely play each other met in the opening round of the Group 2 playoffs. It would be Delran's high powered offense, averaging 30 points per game, versus Hammonton's stingy defense, averaging just under 3 points per game. A balanced attack of run and pass for Delran would prevail with their defense stopping Hammonton's powerful running game, as the Bears stunned the undefeated Blue Devils 23-8 to move on to play Gloucester in the semifinals.

In a game where Cherokee was not at its top performance, Mike Scanzano literally won the game for the Chiefs. Brick Township had nothing to lose. Considered serious underdogs, Township scored early and often in this game. Brick scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter to go ahead of the Chiefs by one. But in the end Scanzano scored his third touchdown of the day to win the game 30-25 in a Group 4 playoff game.

On a day when the Overbrook Rams hosted the Lenape Indians, the defense were the ones who would be the heroes. In a Group 4 quarterfinals playoff game, the Rams held off a late charge by Lenape to advance to the semifinals against Millville. The Indians were about to go ahead in this game late, but the Rams defense kept them off the scoreboard and recorded a 9-0 victory.

In a non-league game added for teams that did not make the playoffs, Washington Township defeated the Toms River East Raiders on Friday night 28-7. It was a balanced running attack led by senior Matt Scaravaglione with juniors Joe Calaciura and Dave Dick. They scored on their first possession and used less than two minutes as they went 66 yards in 4 plays. The key play being a 41 yard pass play from senior quarterback Dave Crockett to senior wide receiver Jason Mosely. Crockett would sneak over from the one and give the Minutemen an early 6-0 lead, leaving little doubt that the last home game for these seniors would not end on a losing note.

Talking about a tough battle in the trenches, the game between Shawnee Renegades and the Cherokee Chiefs was a hard hitting affair. Both teams saw players go off the field with injuries. The Chiefs came out to be the team with the victory. Doug Easlick was very successful running the ball in the Chiefs 21-7 victory over the Renegades.

Arguably, in their best overall performance of the season, the Washington Township Minutemen dominated Rancocas Valley on both sides of the ball in a convincing 51-19 romp. After spotting the Red Devils a 7-0 lead on a 13 yard run by Ryan Morrow, Washington Township scored 36 unanswered points, mainly behind the overpowering performance of the offensive line and a balanced running attack, led by quarterback Dave Crockett with the power of fullback Matt Scaravaglione and the slashing runs of Khalid Purnell.

Three teams stood at 5-1 atop the Olympic American Division, Cherokee, Eastern, and Shawnee. So when Eastern visited Shawnee this day, both teams realized the significance of the game. Special teams would prove to be the difference, as the Vikings won 21-14 to give Coach Larry Ginsburg his 200th career victory.

This game started out to be a battle not against their opponent, but against the wind. The air attack was much of a success if you were throwing into the west side of the field. But when the winds died down, it would be the Overbrook Rams who stayed ahead of the Pennsauken Indians 34-25. The Rams stayed undefeated (7-0) while Pennsauken fell to 5-2 in this Olympic Conference Patriot Division game.

Saturday at Camden High featured two very good football teams in an Olympic Conference game. The Willingboro Chimeras were going up against the Camden Panthers. It was a meeting between the top two teams in the National Division. Willingboro was coming off a 67-0 win over Paul VI, while Camden got past Bishop Eustace 32-20. Both teams had high hopes of continuing their winning ways. It must have been the excitement of the Willingboro Marching Band during the pre-game festivities that got their team electrified. The Chimeras scored big in the first and final quarters to record a 38-0 shutout victory.

Delran went into Moorestown hoping to keep their playoff hopes alive. But unfortunately, the Bears had to go against another great Burlington County team. The Quakers were looking to keep pace with Holy Cross atop the Burlington County Liberty Division. Turnovers would be the key factor in the Quakers' 21-10 victory.

Every team loves to get that early lead to gain the edge on their opponent. The Red Devils did that on their opening drive and held off Highland's late charge. Rancocas Valley increased their record to 4-2 while Highland fell to 2-4. The final score showed that extra points could win the game. The Tartans failed on both point after attempts and lost 14-12.

Both the Deptford Spartans and the Salem Rams were looking to gain ground in the playoff race, but it was Deptford who would run away with the victory with the help of Justin Love's two touchdowns. Turnovers would also be key in this Tri-County Conference non-division game.

If you thought that the opening play of the Camden Catholic at Bishop Eustace football game was an indication of a high scoring game, then your guess would be right. Both teams were able to score at will and defense was not much of a factor. Camden Catholic's J.P. Hammond took the opening kickoff 88 yards for the early lead. Bishop Eustace then countered with an early touchdown of their own, but it was the Irish who got the final score with just under a minute left in the game. Camden Catholic would get their first victory of the season by defeating the Crusaders 42-38.

You can always count on a exciting game when the Gloucester High Lions play the Gloucester Catholic Rams. Even though the Rams were 1-3 and the Lions were 4-0, somehow you knew the Rams would play them tough. With the help of wide receiver Jason McDonnell and the big play, the Lions were able to survive a tough one, 13-9.

Saturday was overcast and misty, which led to slippery playing conditions. Sloppy conditions led to sloppy play, as both penalties and turnovers played major roles in this game. Both offenses struggled, but the Overbrook Rams managed two touchdowns while holding the Lenape Indians to a field goal to come away with the victory.

The gloomy weather at Edgewood on Saturday looked like it would make for a gloomy game for the Eagles' young football team. On Highland's first two offensive possessions of the game, the Tartans marched down the field and scored two touchdowns. With both PAT's made by kicker Sean Pollard, the score in the first quarter was Highland 14 - Edgewood 0.

Collingswood won a long defensive struggle at the home of the Haddon Township Hawks. Ted DiOrio's 4th quarter field goal proved to be the only score, as the Panthers were able to survive the battle with the victory. Both teams ended the day at 1-1, Collingswood after losing the week before to Paulsboro, and the Hawks defeating the Thundering Herd of Woodbury. This makes Collingswood's meeting with Haddon Heights next week even more significant, with Heights being the only undefeated team left in the Colonial Conference.

Opening season for high school football began on Friday night where teams like Williamstown, Gateway, Delsea, Eastern and Kingsway started their season with victories. Shawnee and Highland were looking to join those teams on Saturday at Highland High School. It would be the Renegades who would not only start the season off with a victory, but also shut down Highland's offense. Shawnee would have little trouble behind starting quarterback Mike Connelly and record a 28-7 victory.

Two expectant teams took the field at Overbrook today, with the temperature hot under a bright blue sky. Both Rancocas Valley and Overbrook were picked by various local sports prognosticators to contend for the Olympic Conference Patriot Division title. The game was especially significant for Overbrook's head coach, Harvey Miller, as well as their Senior running back, Nana Gillett-Spio. This was the first game for Coach Miller, who made his return from having to take a leave of absence last year after suffering a heart attack. Gillett-Spio, transferred from Edgewood High School, remembered the last time he played on this field was on Thanksgiving, when his team was being blown out by Overbrook 34-0.

Delran out-passed, out-ran, out-kicked, and out-scored Burlington City Friday night on terrific performances by Ted Trump and Vince Marino. Trump, the nationally recognized baseball pitcher who made his first start as a quarterback, showed he could also pitch a football. He started a little slow, four of his incompletions were on his first four attempts. But once he found the mark he threw an awesome seven for eight including 40-yard plus passes to Marino and Manny Mahan. Overall he threw the ball for 146 yards and three touchdowns with seven completions in twelve attempts. The Bears would defeat Burlington City 41-6.

Physical Fitness Tip of the Week: Wednesday, July 22, 1998
By Gregory "Graig" White
The beginning of the high school football season is right around the corner. Coaches, I would like to ask you a question, "Are you ready to hit?" I know that your weight rooms were open during the summer, but did you give your athletes everything they needed to get the job done? As I visited some schools during the summer, I found that most of the programs were missing a vital component in their conditioning program, and that was a comprehensive philosophy.
