High School Basketball: Thursday, March 13, 2003 By Jerome Michaels For three quarters, it looked as if Paulsboro would have to come up big again in the final quarter to advance to the Group 1 State Championship game. The Red Raiders, even though leading for most of this game, did not seem to have that shooter’s touch against Piscataway Tech during their semi-final competition. In the end, Paulsboro would explode down the stretch behind the efforts of George Davis and Russell Carter’s free throw from the line helped the Red Raiders move on to the title game. Paulsboro would win the game 70-54 and will play against Bloomfield Tech for the championship. |
High School Basketball: Tuesday, March 11, 2003 By Vincent Lewis The finals always bring out the best in every player stepping out on the basketball court. Paulsboro's Russell Carter and Schalick's Paul Gause each has demonstrated all season long that they could lead their team to a title. Eager to get the game started and taking their first shot removing all the anxiety out of their body, the South Jersey Group 1 boy's champions were crowned at Clearview High School this night. With the game on the line and Schalick attempting to tie this game late, Carter's defense sealed the Red Raiders 89-86 victory to claim the title. |
High School Basketball: Tuesday, March 11, 2003 By Jerome Michaels Normally a basketball game is decided after four quarters has been played with the stronger team outscoring the weaker team. There are times, not too many of them, when a fiercely competitive competition between two equally talented teams can’t decide the winner after thirty-two minutes has been played. So how does one explain the results when double overtime is needed to decide the winner? The Camden Panthers and the Chimeras from Willingboro were those teams looking to capture the South Jersey Group III championship being played at Eastern High School. The Panthers finally ended the game, outlasting Willingboro in double overtime by one point, 72-71 to claim the title. |
High School Basketball: Saturday, March 8, 2003 By Jerome Michaels It was a game that both team remembered with one team moving on, one team moving out. Last year, the Paulsboro Red Raiders met on different circumstances as they faced the Blue Devils at Burlington City High School. The Blue Devils were the top seeded team ending Paulsboro season in their semi-finals match-up. Burlington City went on to win the title. This year, the reverse…Paulsboro seeded number one and Burlington City holding down the fifth seed of the South Jersey Group 1 playoff bracket. Destined to improve from last year, Paulsboro won this year’s semi-finals game 72-59 to earn a right to compete against Schalick for the championship game. |
High School Basketball: Saturday, March 8, 2003 By Art Redd All in attendance for the boy’s semifinals basketball game between Camden and Woodrow Wilson knew they were in for a highly competitive battle. The first time these two teams met, the entertaining Olympic Conference National Divisional match-up was decided by a basket by Wayne Smalls giving Camden the one point victory. In this game, the first quarter proved to be the difference as Shamari Moore scored 15 of the Panthers’ 31 points. That lead held up for Camden as Wilson’s second half surge came up short giving the Panthers a trip to the South Jersey Group 3 finals winning 79-74 at Cherry Hill East High School. |
High School Basketball: Saturday, March 8, 2003 By Art Redd Shalamar Oakley erased all doubts about, if the Lady Tigers from Woodrow Wilson could finally beat the girl's basketball team from Highland High School. These two teams met in last year's semifinals game with the Lady Tartans pulling away to advance to the championship game. This year, Oakley's three pointer that beat the buzzer to end the first half was a good indication of things to come. Her twenty second half points highlighted the Tigers' 60-48 win at Cherry Hill East High School in semifinals action. With the win, the Lady Tigers will meet the Willingboro Lady Chimeras for the South Jersey Group 3 group championship. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, March 6, 2003 By Art Redd The Chargers were a determined group of girl's wanting to take full advantage of the position that they were put in during this year's tournament. With their fourth seed, Timber Creek would host their first ever home game against the twelfth seeded Lady Quakers from Moorestown. Right from the opening tip-off, Timber Creek were not looking to be in the news as Moorestown's latest upset victims. All five starting players on the court for the Chargers wanted to touch the ball and score. That determination got Timber Creek the 49-29 win in front of their hometown fans. |
High School Basketball: Wednesday, March 5, 2003 By Susan Hall The number one seeded Panthers from Collingswood were waiting around for the first round of the girl’s South Jersey Group 2 playoffs to complete. Their opponent would be against the Wildcats from Pinelands, as they would defeat Delran to advance to the next round. Eager to get the post season started, Collingswood demonstrated that they were ready to defend their top seed status by rolling all over the Wildcats from start to finish. The Panthers held their opponent to just six points in the first and moved on to the next round with their 50-37 win at home. |
High School Basketball: Monday, March 3, 2003 By Jerome Michaels This is always an exciting time…March Madness has begun for the area high schools, as they will compete for their version of the national title. The first round of the South Jersey Group IV boy’s playoff began with the Renegades from Shawnee hosting the eleventh seeded Vikings from Eastern. The sixth seeded Renegades, behind the shooting of Bill Kurtz, regained a second half deficit to pull out the 41-37 victory. Eastern’s late rally to upset the Renegades fell short as Kurtz’s clutch shooting earned a berth in the next round of the playoffs. |
High School Basketball: Monday, March 3, 2003 By Crystal Parker It has been a very exciting season for the Lady Lions from Cherry Hill West girl's basketball teams. Finishing the season with a 15-7 record, West would start out their tournament run with a 39-29 victory over the Lady Indians from Pennsauken. Last year, the Lions were seeded lower in the South Jersey Group IV playoff bracket and were knocked out of the tournament in the first round. This year was a different story as the Lions, seeded seventh this year, won their first round playoff game since 1998 after beating Jackson Memorial. Cherry Hill West will now travel to the second seeded Toms River North. |

High School Basketball: Saturday, March 1, 2003 By Crystal Parker Who really has the advantage playing at home when Haddon Heights or Haddonfield takes the court for any high school sporting activity? Both sides of the gymnasium are usually packed with fans supporting their team giving them all the comforts of home. Well Megan Heuter must of felt very comfortable, as she had no problems knocking down the jumper that gave the Lady Garnets the lead for good late in the final minutes. Haddon Heights turned a two-point deficit at the end of the third quarter into a 49-47 victory for the Conference title. |
High School Basketball: Saturday, March 1, 2003 By Art Redd Playing an unfamiliar team always presents new challenges for both the coaching staff and the players. That was the situation with the girl’s basketball team from Wildwood competing against the Lady Tartans from Highland for the Tri-County Conference Title. The Warriors’ Lana Harshaw is the leading scorer for Wildwood as her ability to take control of a game inside the paint has been established during their 19 game winning streak. Highland, behind the two juniors Lisa Steele and Danielle Hemerka, have cause havoc for opposing defenses all season long. When the two teams met Saturday afternoon at Williamstown, Highland (21-3) dominated the game from the start as Lisa Steele’s game high 32-points highlighted their 19 point victory. |
High School Basketball: Saturday, March 1, 2003 By Art Redd The Schalick boy’s basketball team was not satisfied with just winning the Tri-County Conference Classic Division. Standing in their way were the Spartans from Deptford High School. When the final buzzer sounded to end the game, a total of 174 points were scored with over 40 three-point attempts flying through the air. Sophomore guard Paul Gause helped with those totals by scoring 43 points during their win against Deptford at Williamstown High School. With their 93-81 victory, Schalick won the Tri-County Conference crown. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, February 27, 2003 By Vincent Lewis Ending the season with a seven game-winning streak is a great momentum builder right before the upcoming state tournament. Collingswood was that team as coach Nancy O’Neill watched her Lady Panthers roll past Camden Catholic 48-31 on the Irish home court. Collingswood would start this non-league game off strong and stayed ahead of their opponent all game. Camden Catholic just could not get the shots to fall on this day and the Lady Panthers took full advantage. Collingswood attacked the basket on offense as they were determined to finish the season strong with a win. |
High School Basketball: Sunday, February 23, 2003 By Vincent Lewis The Irish have been proving to themselves and others that they are a well coached and talented boy’s basketball team. Each game played, and won, has presented different challenges for them to overcome. Well it was a big challenge today for Camden Catholic as they were going up against St. Anthony at Cherry Hill High School in the Scholastic Play-by-Play tournament. This highly competitive match-up came down to big free throws by Camden Catholic to pull out their 52-49 win. |
High School Basketball: Sunday, February 16, 2003 By Jerome Michaels This year’s Olympic-Cape Challenge to benefit the Shoot Down Cancer Foundation was held at Hammonton High School. This two day scheduled event was shortened down to just one day due to the area’s first significant snowfall. High School Basketball: Saturday, February 15, 2003 By Vincent Lewis St. Joseph High School has a duel that can demonstrate how easy it looks to shoot the ball from long range with ease. Tim Burns and Aaron Spellman had the shooter’s touch knocking down their jumpers against the Cougars from Cherry Hill West. After being down by three points to start the second half, the Wildcats put some distance between them and Cherry Hill West during the next three quarters. Burns would lead all scorers with 37 points for St. Joseph as they defeated the Cougars by an 81-63 margin. |
High School Basketball: Friday, February 14, 2003 By Vincent Lewis The Life Center Academy boy's basketball team again has won the Penn-Jersey Athletic Association title. The high school team from Burlington has been racking up the wins against just a few teams from South Jersey, but most of their victories against programs from Pennsylvania, New York and North/Central Jersey. No matter where they have played, it seems as if they usually walk away off the court with the win. Mercer Christian Academy were the Warriors latest victims doubling up the score winning 106-47. Say what you have to say about the opponents that they play against, but there is no doubt that they have some serious talent on the team. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, February 13, 2003 By Jerome Michaels When the Hornets from Pemberton met Holy Cross at their first game, the Hornets were right in the middle of their seven game winning streak to start the season. Pemberton won that game against the Lancers but hit a bump in the road losing their next six games. Holy Cross, before this game, had loss four out of their last five games and was looking to win this Burlington County Liberty Division matchup. Holy Cross would even the series as they won a tight game by a 52-50 score. Mike Coppola led all scorers with 22 points for the Lancers. |
High School Basketball: Tuesday, February 11, 2003 By Vincent Lewis It's always a good feeling knowing the pressure is off after clinching a playoff position right before the cutoff date. Both Gloucester Catholic and Williamstown will be representing their schools in March when other teams season will have ended. After Gloucester Catholic recorded their 46-35 victory, it would be a split for the season as both teams won their game on the other team's home court. The Rams' defense keyed the win in the final quarter. |
High School Basketball: Tuesday, February 11, 2003 By Susan Hall It was another one of those classic match-ups from the Tri-County Conference Classic Division against two successful girl’s basketball teams. The much-improved Lady Wolverines from Woodstown were sitting in second place just one game ahead of Gloucester City in the standings. Gloucester City (12-6) had beaten Woodstown earlier in the season and was looking to end their four game winning streak. It wasn’t easy as the Lions overcame a 3-point deficit to win the game 46-43 in front of their home crowd. |

With a balance attack, Absegami rolled past Notre Dame posting a 49-31 victory. |
High School Basketball: Sunday, February 9, 2003 By Crystal Parker Basketball is another one of those sports where each game you enter on the court should be like the first. The level of your play should be as high as if it was on opening day. But can a team play at that level through out the entire season? It's a feat only few can accomplish. So what happens when both the Lady Lions from Sacred Heart and the talents of the girl's basketball team from Highland High School get together for the Shootout at the Shore at Mainland Regional? One team seems to find a weakness and do their best to exploit it. Sacred Heart did exactly that as they held on for the 41-38 victory. |
High School Basketball: Saturday, February 8, 2003 By Susan Hall Make no mistake about it, the girl's basketball team from Willingboro High School are one of the best team for some time now that has totally dominate this area. With the win, the Lady Irish would remain one game ahead of Bishop Eustace in the Olympic Conference National Division standings. |
High School Basketball: Tuesday, February 4, 2003 By Jerome Michaels This was one of those games that both Cherry Hill East and Eastern needed to assure themselves a position in the 2003 South Jersey Group IV playoffs. Both teams are right on the bubble of advancing to the post season, but they chances looked good with a strong finish with cutoff date just a couple of days away. Kofi Dwebeng had all intensions of getting the Vikings into the playoffs as his play help Eastern get past the Cougars by a score of 61-40. High School Basketball: Saturday, February 1, 2003 By Jerome Michaels It was yet another test put in front of the Camden Catholic boy’s basketball team as they were assigned the duty of playing Middle Township in the Battle of the Bay tournament. The Panthers, last year’s group 2 champions, were now priming themselves for another run at the title going up against the Irish. It would be a battle, as Camden Catholic (14-1) would be involved with their toughest game of the season. When the final buzzer sounded to end the game, the Irish would have recorded their thirteenth straight win by defeating the Panthers 44-41. |
High School Basketball: Friday, January 31, 2003 By Vincent Lewis With the deadline for making the playoffs quickly approaching, there are several teams looking to stay above the five hundred percentage mark to assure themselves a spot in the upcoming postseason. The Pioneers from Clearview are one of those teams that are in a good position and took full advantage against a struggling Cumberland team. Clearview jumped out to a commanding lead in the first quarter and cruised the rest of the way. The Pioneers convincingly posted a 68-51 victory in a Tri-County Conference Royal Division contest. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, January 30, 2003 By Susan Hall The girl's competition from the Colonial Conference has been a competitive conference for years. It always seem as if Haddonfield, Haddon Heights, Haddon Township, Sterling and Collingswood are among the top at the end of the season. Well two of those teams, the Lady Knights from Sterling and Lady Hawks from Haddon Township were meeting for the second time this season. This time, Sterling came out on the winning side as they narrowly escaped with a 35-34 win on their home court. |

The score of the first quarter was 20-10, Wildwood leading. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, January 30, 2003 By Vincent Lewis When a team loses by a substantial margin the first time they've met on the basketball court, win or lose you come away with a learning experience. Realizing what was done wrong or for Woodrow Wilson, what was done exceptionally right, gives the coaching staff something to talk about the next time they meet. Today, it was the Eagles from Paul VI's turn to host the Tigers from Woodrow Wilson. Again, the Eagles would not be able to come up with a way to surprise their opponent as Wilson jumped out to a lead and never looked back. Wilson walked off the court with an 80-52 divisional win. |
High School Basketball: Tuesday, January 28, 2003 By Jerome Michaels The Palmyra Panthers had an opportunity to let everyone of their players get their name in the box scores. Maple Shade was one of those teams were they were trying to remain competitive each and every time they took the court for a game. With only one win so far this season, they were facing a Panthers team who was in the hunt for a Burlington County Freedom Division title. Palmyra took control of the game from the opening tip-off and rolled past the Wildcats Tuesday night at Maple Shade High School. |
High School Basketball: Saturday, January 25, 2003 By Art Redd Playing at home against a team that has been rolling past their opponents, Sterling needed someone to come up big against the Lady Garnets from Haddon Heights. Freshman forward Kate Brennan and sophomore guard Amanda Brennan took control when it counted late in the fourth quarter to stunned Heights winning by three points, 45-42. Kate Brennan lined up her shot from 20 feet away to snap a tie with just over a minute and a half remaining in the game. That three pointer put the Lady Knights up for good to move one step closer to the division leaders. |
High School Basketball: Friday, January 24, 2003 By Jerome Michaels Riverside has been working hard trying to get a winning streak going so far this season. The Rams were two games under five hundred and were looking to come back with a win after suffering a one-point loss to Florence. Standing in their way was a determined Granville Charter boy's basketball team who overcame a double digital lead to send this non-league contest into overtime. This time, Darryl Canty's 26 points helped the home team get by Granville 73-69. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, January 23, 2003 By Susan Hall There are always one or two players on the team that you can always count on to take the big shot to win the game. When you have more than one player who can at least get open to take that open shot, it can only lead to success. It's no secret that Nicole Jones can dominate a game, but it is evident that the entire squad gets the create for the Lady Garnets winning ways. In a very competitive game, the Lady Lions from Lindenwold put up a great fight but loss to Haddon Heights by a score of 47-42. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, January 23, 2003 By Vincent Lewis The Red Devils have been cruising through their schedule so far this season and were looking to add another win to their divisional record against the boy's basketball team from Willingboro High School. High School Basketball: Tuesday, January 21, 2003 By Charlie Barker The Tri-County Classic Division has always been a good place for competitive basketball, and was made even more interesting this year with the addition of Wildwood. The Warriors travelled to Gloucester City on Tuesday night sitting on top of the division with a half game lead over Salem after losing a tough game to the Rams last Friday. Gloucester City likewise was a half game back and looking to move up to the top after a disappointing loss to Schalick on Friday. |
High School Basketball: Saturday, January 18, 2003 By Anton Figg What a game. Camden-Wilson, Hatfields-McCoys, you get the picture, the game lived up to it's billing. Playing at Rutgers-Camden before a packed house, the two teams squared off in a game that was hotly contested from the start, and would not be decided until very late in the game. The teams came out ready to play, there was very little hesitation and both teams were ready and brought their "A" games. Camden's Shomari Moore and Woodrow Wilson's Kris Polk were going at each other and also working to get other players involved, proved to be the match up that attracted the most attention. |
High School Basketball: Saturday, January 18, 2003 By Anton Figg In a game that had little suspense, the Woodrow Wilson Tigers went out and put on a display of basketball that people have come to expect from them. Playing a Camden High team that was overmatched, the Lady Tigers roared to a 93-26 win. The score could have easily been in the triple digits; an act of compassion by the Wilson coaching staff prevented it from happening. |
High School Basketball: Friday, January 17, 2003 By Jerome Michaels The latest victims to fall to the Bulldogs success were the Garnets from Haddon Heights. High School Basketball: Friday, January 17, 2003 By Luis Rodriguez On a night that the Wildwood Warriors were coming with a record of 8-1 thinking to improve to 9-1 to take a 2 game lead in the Tri-County conference, vs. the Salem Rams was not what the town of Wildwood was hoping to see. To start the game for the Warriors were Shane Toland (#23), Bobby Mulholland (#11), Jeremiah Brown (#20), Adrian Santiago (#55), and the top Tri-County League scorer and rebounder, Jonathan Greene (#32). The Warriors held the team to a 5 point lead for the whole first quarter but Salem slowly gained more points thru the 2nd quarter. Adrian Santiago for the Wildwood Warriors started the first half with 9 points, helping the Warriors to advance with the record they have right now. Jonathan Greene also shipped in a 12 along with the combined points of Bobby, and Shane. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, January 16, 2003 By Jerome Michaels Besides their opening day loss to St. Joseph's Prep, the Irish from Camden Catholic has made everyone else pay by scoring double wins. So far this season, they have won seven games in a row and they were not done. With the leadership and scoring ability of senior Nick Cangelosi, Camden Catholic has been mentioned as the top basketball programs in South Jersey. Bishop Eustace found out first hand as the Irish visited their neighboring rivals and defeated the Crusaders by a 62 to 45 margin. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, January 16, 2003 By Crystal Parker It was a game that was marked down on the schedule as a classic match up against two teams that were undefeated in the Tri-County Conference Liberty Division. The Lady Rams traveled to Highland High School, which the Lady Tartans were not very hospitable hosts. Crashing the boards on both ends of the court proved to be too much for Gloucester Catholic to handle. Add the long range shooting from Lisa Steele, Danielle Hemerka and Stacy Digneo, Highland put this game away in the first quarter setting the tone for the rest of the way. Head coach Dan McGettigan watched his team post a 51-22 victory and remain undefeated for the season. |
High School Basketball: Wednesday, January 15, 2003 By Vincent Lewis It has been an intense past two games so far for the boy’s basketball team from Paulsboro. The Red Raiders, after beginning the season with three reasonable easy wins, have had two nail-biting endings resulting in two point victories. A determined Panther’s team had a chance to send this Colonial Conference game into overtime on a buzzer beater, but the attempt was rejected to preserve an 88-85 win at Collingswood High School. Russell Carter came up big for the Red Raiders blocking Joey Soto’s game-tying attempt. |
High School Basketball: Tuesday, January 14, 2003 By Crystal Parker The Minutemaids from Washington Township traveled to Cherry Hill West to take on the Lady Cougars in an Olympic Conference match up. This was a tight battle throughout this game with West holding a one-point lead to start the second quarter. But the highly favorite Minutemaids would respond to the challenge and hold a slim lead going into the final quarter. It would be Melissa Venturi scoring 10-points in the fourth quarter that pushed Township to a nine point victory. As a team, the Minutemaids converted 11 out of 14 free throw attempts down the stretch to preserve their 54-42 road win. |

The Indian's good start involved divisional wins over Shawnee, Cherokee, Eastern and today the Panthers from the National Division. Jason Thompson led Lenape with a team high 17 points. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, January 9, 2003 By Anton Figg Timber Creek has a basketball team that seems to have all the pieces in place to make life miserable for lots of teams in South Jersey. Their combination of size and speed, and the way they play the game is enjoyable to watch. Playing against a Pennsauken team that was as quick as they were, seemed not to pose a problem, they just went over the top and when they did the Indians had few people who could contest them. Pennsauken's shooting over a 1-3-1 zone watched as most of the shots turned into rebounds, the shots that came from the guards penetrating were blocked. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, January 9, 2003 By Jerome Michaels When two teams are looking for ways to rebound from a slow start, it's always good to play a similar team in a similar situation. Willingboro and Cinnaminson are both fighting to get to five hundred-percentage basketball in their divisions. Willingboro was looking to win its second straight game against the host Pirates from Cinnaminson. The Chimeras had little problems from start to end to post a 61-48 Burlington County Conference boy's basketball game. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, January 9, 2003 By Vincent Lewis It was a battle between two of the top teams from the Olympic Conference, each winning all of their games so far this season. High School Basketball: Friday, January 3, 2003 By Vincent Lewis It was a surprise to find out that most schools start their scheduled games with the varsity squad taking center stage and then the junior varsity basketball players. Not today at Cougar County at Cherry Hill West. The freshman players from Timber Creek and West would get a rare coverage showcasing their talents before the main event. Both teams would struggle in the initial quarter, but the Cougars behind the home crowd began to take advantage of turnovers and pull away from the Chargers. The freshman from Cherry Hill West Cougars posted a 61-48 victory. |
