High School Basketball: Cherry Hill West Outplays Timber Creek in Freshman Action Friday, January 3, 2003 By Vincent Lewis It was a surprise to find out that most schools start their scheduled games with the varsity squad taking center stage and then the junior varsity basketball players. Not today at Cougar County at Cherry Hill West. The freshman players from Timber Creek and West would get a rare coverage showcasing their talents before the main event. Both teams would struggle in the initial quarter, but the Cougars behind the home crowd began to take advantage of turnovers and pull away from the Chargers. The freshman from Cherry Hill West Cougars posted a 61-48 victory. The first half highlights belonged to the Cougars. Cherry Hill went on a 10-4 run to open up a double-digit margin and lead 26-16 with 4:07 remaining in the half. Timber Creek did close the gap to within seven points, but turnovers again would prove costly. The final quarter proved to be the more entertaining part of this game as the Chargers turned up their intensity looking for a way to overcome their deficit. Cherry Hill West would shoot just over fifty percent from the free throw line, which proved good enough to post a victory at home before the varsity game begun. Timber Creek would win the varsity match up by a 70-57 score.
