South Jersey Basketball: Rapid Player Improvement Newsletter Volume 1.3 Wednesday, October 30, 2002 Press Release RPI OPENS POINT GUARD SCHOOL Voorhees, NJ November 3, 2002 Staff Writer For players that want to learn how to play the toughest position in basketball, this is the place to go. Over the weekend more than 30 players attended the first Rapid Player Improvement Point Guard School run by Gary Lapergola and Brian Rowan. Players drilled, competed in point guard specific situations, learned tips to help them improve their play and listened to guest speakers. Gary Lapergola has been working with many South Jersey players individually for years but thought it was time for a camp specifically for point guards. "There is nothing like this camp in the area. At Point Guard School we get into the philosophy of playing the point, specific skills necessary to succeed at this position, and most importantly, situations that players need to master to be great at the point." Each day the players spent approximately 15 minutes in a classroom going over the characteristics of great point guards and how to measure their success at the position. The campers also got to hear from Allen Rubin and Bobby Fisicaro. Rubin is the South Jersey/Philadelphia editor of The HoopScoop Recruiting Newsletter (www.hoopscooponline.com) and discussed some of the things college coaches look for in PG?s. He says PG is the toughest position for college programs to fill and they are always on the lookout for players who can handle the ball, play pressure defense and be leaders on the floor. Players were able to ask questions about how to be seen by recruiting services and college coaches and if players from small schools were at a major disadvantage when it came to exposure. Fisicaro, a former All-South Jersey PG from Bishop Eustace who has played professionally overseas, demonstrated specific skills players could improve to improve their first step and become more explosive from the triple threat position and also off the dribble. The second session of Point Guard School runs from November 15-17 at The Coliseum Fitness Center in Voorhees, NJ. "The camp is open to high school and middle school players. You do not need to be a PG to attend, this would be helpful for all perimeter players and even big people who want to improve their perimeter game," Rowan said Saturday. This camp is open to both boys and girls and more specific information and a registration form can be found at www.rpicamps.com. Find out about all RPI Sports Camps at www.rpicamps.com |
