High School Soccer: Camden Catholic Continues Winning Ways Against Triton Monday, October 30, 2000 By Bob Wankel It was a cold and blustery Halloween Eve late season soccer matchup as the Mustangs of Triton in their final home game were looking to steal one from the Fighting Irish of Camden Catholic. Coming in to the game the Irish were ranked #10 in South Jersey according to the Courier Post Coaches Top 20 poll. The Mustangs had been ranked as high as #17 in that poll but have faded in recent weeks. |
High School Soccer: Triton Rallies in Second Half for Win Against Overbrook Friday, October 20, 2000 By Bob Wankel Soccer took center stage under the Friday night lights this week as Triton squared off with Overbrook in the most critical game of the year. A playoff birth for was at stake for both teams. It would all come down to who wanted it more. Let me tell you, I'm not much of a soccer fan, but this was a great game. |
High School Soccer: Lady Chiefs edge Cherry Hill East Friday, October 13, 2000 By Forrest Robleto Cherry Hill was hoping that Friday 13th might bring some bad luck to the Chief's, but there wasn't much in the way of luck to it. Cherry Hill played a good game but Cherokee played a better one. Cherokee were having a good strong season and today was no exception. The Lady Chiefs won this game by a score of 2-1. |

High School Soccer: Cherry Hill East Blanks Camden Catholic Friday, October 6, 2000 By Vincent Lewis When Camden Catholic visited Cherry Hill East on Friday, it was their chance to move up in the standings and beat a well respected Cougar's soccer team. After winning an easy game against Gloucester Township Tech, the Irish boy's soccer team had their sites set on East. But, you don't become a well respected team until you beat those good teams as Cherry Hill East did against Camden Catholic. In a very defensive and physical game, the Cougar's posted a 1-0 victory to increase their undefeated record to 6-0-1. |
High School Soccer: Overbrook Wins Final Battle Against Edgewood Saturday, September 30, 2000 By Boog Williams With the dissolution of the Lower Camden County School District #1 scheduled for the end of this school year, this was not just a game between sister schools, but the end of four decades of competition. The Overbrook Rams now have the bragging rights. They won the last game ever to be played between Overbrook and Edgewood in boy's soccer. The win moved the Rams to a .500 average and as Coach Bambara was yelling to his players after the came, "This should move us into the top 20". |
High School Soccer: Lady Cougars Wins Easily in the End Thursday, September 14, 2000 By Forrest Robleto The Lenape soccer team was fresh off of a win against Moorestown and Cherry Hill East were fresh off a win in a bruising contest against Washington Township. They both looked terrific in the first half. About half way through the second half, the Lady Cougars got on the board and a few minutes later did it again. Lenape, who had the edge through the entire first half and a good part of the second, lost a lot of their enthusiasm and the third goal for East came very easily. |
High School Soccer: Edgewood Girl's Soccer Looks to Improve Wednesday, September 13, 2000 By Boog Williams The Edgewood Girl's soccer team is looking to improve with a new head coach. His name is Bill Pesda. The Lady Eagles will have eight returning players from last year's squad and one returning after two years from an injury. Having lost only an outside back to graduation, we should be better than last year". This is Coach Wence's fifth year as head coach, with a 36-29-10 record. |
South Jersey Soccer: Pioneers End Barons Season with Golden Goal Saturday, August 19, 2000 By Forrest Robleto The Western Mass. Pioneers who ended the Barons season in the Nationals in Ludlow last year, ended the Barons season in the playoff opener this year with a little help from the officials. The game ended fourteen minutes into the first overtime. With this year's format change, the game ended with the Golden Goal (the first goal scored) instead of sudden death (political correctness runs amok). |

South Jersey Soccer: Saturday, June 24, 2000 By Forrest Robleto The South Jersey Barons lost their top scorer to the Delaware Wizards. Matt Miles showed up for the match up between the South Jersey Barons and the Delaware Wizards but he showed up for the wrong team. Apparently Matt Miles left the team due to a falling out with Coach Matt Driver. Neither of then would reveal much about the move, but the scuttlebutt around the field was that it had something to do with a disagreement about how Matt was being played. The consensus was that the Barons (7-3) might have a tough time against the (4-4) Wizards with Miles on their side, and that Matt might score a few goals. It wasn't to be. Matt got a goal and an assist and an ejection. |

The rain kept the crowd away, but didn't cool the Barons. The Barons dominated the New Brunswick Brigade, and even though Paul Royal did get a shutout (with a little help from Steve Welham) the real show was at the other end of the field. |

South Jersey Soccer: Saturday, May 6, 2000 By Forrest Robleto The South Jersey Barons are looking to repeat the 1999 season as regular season Champions and National Championship Finalists. They started out the fine season last year with a 3-0 loss to the Stallions. This year started he same. Last year the Stallions won the first two meetings and the Barons won the last two. The last meeting gave the Barons the regular season championship, and due to a quirk in the playoff system, moved the Stallions to a third place spot in the Divisional playoffs. |
South Jersey Soccer: Hurricanes Quiet Storm Sunday, March 12, 2000 By Jerry Amari A soccer match played in early March usually means one thing, a lot of wind. At game time on March 12th was no exception. The Vineland Under-13 boys traveling soccer team hosted Mt. Laurel at the Vineland Soccer Complex with winds of 15 to 20 mph blowing down the field. The gusty winds seemed appropriate with two teams named the "Hurricanes" (V), and the "Storm" (ML). |
South Jersey Soccer: Vineland Spectre Ties Delran Sunday, March 5, 2000 By Jerry Amari Vineland's U-14 boys traveling soccer team opened its spring season by hosting Delran this past weekend, and came away with a 2 to 2 tie. However, a late first half goal by Martino Lasalandra cut the Demons lead to 2 to 1 at the half. |
South Jersey Soccer: Typhoons Stop Hurricanes Sunday, March 5, 2000 By Jerry Amari The Vineland Hurricanes traveled to Voorhees, NJ for the first game of the Spring traveling soccer season. Breezy, but sunny skies, temps around 55°, not bad for early March. The Canes started the match playing the Typhoons and the gusty winds in their face. Voorhees quickly pressured Vineland keeper Jeremey Chini, but could not score until 22 minutes into the contest. Vineland's Billy Redden was able to work the ball upfield to Saverio Brunnetti. Sal's crossing pass to Kerry Daplyn was ruled offside by the referee and thwarted the only serious threat by the Hurricanes in the first half. The Vineland defense led by Mike Rigo, Dan Peretti, and Nick Ruskoski were able to turn away several Voorhees shots on goal. |
