Overbrook Wins Final Battle Against Edgewood

With the dissolution of the Lower Camden County School District #1 scheduled for the end of this school year, this was not just a game between sister schools, but the end of four decades of competition. The Overbrook Rams now have the bragging rights. They won the last game ever to be played between Overbrook and Edgewood in boy's soccer. The win moved the Rams to a .500 average and as Coach Bambara was yelling to his players after the came, "This should move us into the top 20".

By the statistics, Edgewood had control of the game. But like in a lot of sports, it's not the statistics that win the game, but what is on the scoreboard. And that is where Overbrook won the game 1-0. The only goal was scored by #11 Muff in the first half at the 21:35 mark. Edgewood's Coach Wence said, "The goal was scored from a 2 degree angle". Muff had the ball near the Edgewood touchline, just inside the right corner of the 18-yard box. Muff hit the ball to the far post and it went in off of the post. Edgewood was putting the pressure on but could not find the back of the net behind the Rams' keeper, Williams. With 4 seconds left in the first half, Overbrook's #12, Tobre, took down an Edgewood player outside of the 18-yard box and received a yellow card. The Rams set up a wall as the Eagles #9, Johnson, tried to hit the ball through the wall (see video). The Rams stopped the kick and the half ended with the score 1-0. The Rams had three shots while the Eagles had six. The Rams also had 3 yellow cards, #11 Muff, #2 Saunders, and #12 Tobre.

The second half was physical and played in the air. Edgewood kept attacking, but Williams was stopping everything. Edgewood used a lot of set plays to get the ball in the air and try to head them in, but again Williams came up big. The Rams would not give in to the pressure. With the Eagles attacking, the Rams lost their goal scorer, Muff, to his second yellow card of the game. The Rams did not back down. The game ended with the score 1-0. Looking at the statistics, Keeper Williams for Overbrook was the star of the game, along with #12 Tobre, for marking Edgewood's top scorer #16 Alber. Edgewood had 14 shots on goal while Overbrook only got one shot in the second half to bring their total to 4. Overbrook's Williams made 12 saves and was aggressive as he came off his line to grab the ball in the air.

Just another little fact about Keeper Williams; he gives his time up on Saturday mornings, except this Saturday, to ref the Berlin Township PeeWee Soccer program. Edgewood wishes he had refereed the PeeWee's instead of playing in this game.
