Event Spotlight: Philadelphia Phantoms 2001-02 Wrap-Up Monday, June 3, 2002 By David W. Unkle & Mike Williams (SJSports Special Correspondent) In their sixth season, the Philadelphia Phantoms finished a mediocre 2001-02 season with a 33-27-15-5 record and saw their hopes to seriously challenge for the Calder Cup end in a first round sweep at the hands of the Syracuse Crunch. The team's abysmal stretch run (4-15-2) was the result of injuries (John Slaney and Brad Tiley), constant roster changes, and a team that was looking for a leader to hold player's feet to the fire. The end-result: a team that limped (barely) into the playoffs and got a quick start to the summer picnic season. Here are the club's final grades, based on the club's final roster. |
Event Spotlight: Three Phantoms Nominated for PHPA Awards Monday, May 20, 2002 By Al Cohen Defenseman Dan Peters was one of eight nominees announced recently for theProfessional Hockey Players' Association 2001-02 US Airways Player of theYear Award. Event Spotlight: Bullies Even Series With 4-3 Win Friday, April 26, 2002 By Mike Williams ATLANTIC CITY - Game two on Friday night versus the Dayton Bombers was a game that the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies absolutely needed. A worst-case scenario for the Bullies saw them heading to Dayton down two games to none in the East Coast Hockey League's best-of-five Northern Conference final. Instead, Atlantic City's work on the night made for a whole new series in a night fraught with dicey moments for the home club. The Bullies used four goals on the power play to hold onto a 4-3 win over the Bombers before 4,192 at Boardwalk Hall. Daniel Lacroix's goal with 1:10 nailed down the win. Shawn Degagne made 30 saves for the Bullies. |
Event Spotlight: Syracuse Ends Phantoms' Season Sunday, April 21, 2002 By Mike Williams Down two games to none to the Syracuse Crunch in the opening round of the Calder Cup playoffs, the objectives for the Phantoms were quite clear on Sunday night. In order to avoid a first-round sweep, the Phantoms would have to beat Syracuse goaltender Jean-Francois Labbe. In order to win the best-of-five series, the Phantoms would have to beat Labbe three times in four nights. |
Event Spotlight: Phantoms Sweep Amerks Thursday, April 11, 2002 By Mike Williams Lasting reputations are made in the playoffs. Pavel Brendl has been tagged with several labels this season - lazy, uninspired and indifferent being the most common charges against the talented 20-year-old winger. Reputations like those are tough to shed. |
Event Spotlight: Phantoms Open Playoffs with 4-2 Win over Rochester Wednesday, April 10, 2002 By David W. Unkle The Phantoms played perhaps their best hockey in the last two months and their effort paid off as Philadelphia took a 1-0 lead in their best of three series against the Rochester Americans at the First Union Spectrum. Mike Watt scored two goals coupled with strong goaltending from Neil Little paced the Phantoms to a 4-2 win. The win was even bigger for Philadelphia who struggled down the stretch, at one point going 4-15-2 in a span of 21 games. |
Event Spotlight: The Glass is Half Empty in Flyers-Panthers 4-4 Tie Tuesday, April 9, 2002 By David W. Unkle Some might say that Phantoms call-ups Guillaume Lefebvre and John Slaney brought the curse with them from the First Union Spectrum; others will say that bad trades (Billy Tibbetts) and injuries (Rick Tocchet, Jeremy Roenick, Jiri Dopita, and Keith Primeau) disrupted the team karma, others might even point out that the Flyers limped into the playoffs the last few years for various other reasons. But even the optimist cannot ignore the Flyers' recent slump of 4-8-4 in their last sixteen games (including last night's game). Following a 3-1 defeat of the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, optimism started to creep into the Flyers' picture. Big games with the Devils, Rangers, and Islanders to round out the schedule stand between the Flyers and the Eastern Conference championship. But first up, the team that is in next to last place in the Eastern Conference, the Mike Keenan-led Florida Panthers. |
Event Spotlight: Phantoms Post 4-2 Win Over Norfolk Admirals Philly clinches sixth straight AHL attendance title Sunday, April 6, 2002 By Al Cohen Greg Koehler scored twice and Neil Little made 17 saves as the Philadelphia Phantoms extended their unbeaten streak to five games with a 4-2 victory over the Norfolk Admirals in front of a crowd of 14,528 at the First Union Spectrum. |

Event Spotlight: Slaney Wins Second Straight Eddie Shore Award as AHL's Best Defenseman Thursday, April 4, 2002 By Al Cohen John Slaney added to his 2001-02 accolades collection today when he was named the winner of the Eddie Shore Award as the American Hockey League's outstanding defenseman. This is the second consecutive year that Slaney has received the award, which is voted on by players and members of the media in each of the league's 27 cities. |
Event Spotlight: New Look Roster, Same Result; Phantoms Fall 2-1 to Bears Saturday, March 23, 2002 By David Unkle The Phantoms and Bears played at the beginning of the month (a 4-3 loss) and since that time, some things have changed and some stayed the same. The Phantoms have gone 3-5 including last night's game since that loss. In the twelve games preceding the March 1 game against the Bears, the Phantoms were 2-6-4. Not only did the Phantoms see their Southern Division lead evaporate but they were overtaken by the Norfolk Admirals and these Hershey Bears. Coming off a 2-0 victory Wednesday night against the Wilkes-Barre Penguins, Philadelphia lacked the sixty minute, both ends of the ice effort that is necessary to win games. |
South Jersey Ice Hockey: Gladiators Take Game One for Atlantic District Championship Thursday, March 14, 2002 By Brad Park The Gladiator Bantam Elite AA hockey team from Voorhees, New Jersey beat the Quakers hockey team 3-1 in the first game of the Atlantic District finals. Event Spotlight: Bad Finish, Siklenka's Hat Trick Downs Atlantic City 5-2 Thursday, March 14, 2002 By David W. Unkle Boardwalk Bullies head Coach Mike Haviland summed it up best after the game in saying: Really good start...I think we had a lot of grade A chances...I don't think we finished them...we made major mistakes...and they were glaring individual mistakes. Fresh off of their come-from-behind 5-4 overtime victory against the Toledo Storm, the Boardwalk Bullies picked up where they left off on Sunday. |
South Jersey Sled Hockey: Wings of Steel Wednesday, March 13, 2002 By Joanne & Mike Costantino As the Paralympics took off last week in Salt Lake City, South Jersey Sports Online would like to tell about some local young athletes that some day would like to compete in the Paralympics. They are the Wings of Steel, a sled hockey team of youngsters with disabilities. Sled hockey is hockey played not on skates but seated on a sled with one blade and the legs strapped together at the front of the sled. There are two cropped down sticks that have a metal grabbers at the ends to help push the sled and each stick has a regular hockey blade. Each player is outfitted with the standard protective padding and helmets that hockey players wear. |
Event Spotlight: Students Volunteer at Flyers' Wives Fight For Lives Carnival Monday, March 11, 2002 By Rita Johanson For the 6th consecutive year student athletes from Washington Township High School have volunteered their time and efforts to make a difference. These students spent a "off" Sunday working hard to man the snack room, pick up pucks, take shots and work, work, work at the Flyers' Wives Fight For Lives Carnival. |
High School Ice Hockey: Cherokee wins High School Ice Hockey Championship Friday, March 8, 2002 By Mike Costantino Bill Connolly, Anthony Diorio and Sean Zahacewski scored two goals each as Cherokee defeated Washington Township 8-5 in the third and deciding game of the SJHSIHL Tier 1 Varsity Championship series. Cherokee started slowly falling behind by two goals in the first period, but as true champions usually do they finished strong scoring four goals in the third period. Township broke out on top first as Nick Martorano scored the first of his two goals, converting a pass after some hard work in the corner by Eric Marano. Connolly, who played his best game of the series, tied the score at 1-1 scoring on a back-hander from his knees with just over two minutes remaining in the opening period. Instead of closing out the period thinking defense first, three goals were scored in the final minute. |
High School Ice Hockey: West Deptford are Tier 2 Champions Wednesday, March 6, 2002 By Mike Costantino Jay Bratton and Brandon Jackmuff scored two goals apiece to pace West Deptford to a 7-4 victory over Lenape and the first SJHSIHL Tier 2 title. After the teams traded power play goals in the first period, West Deptford took the lead for good at the twelve-minute mark. Rob Garish won the face-off and drew the puck back to the point where Brett Gibbs was waiting and his slap shot found the back of the net for a 2-1 lead. Ninety seconds later Jackmuff made it 3-1 scoring on a rebound off a Chris Mc Illvaine shot, with Lenape short-handed. |
High School Ice Hockey: Four Goal Spurt Key as Township Forces Game 3 Wednesday, March 6, 2002 By Mike Costantino Washington Township scored four goals in the last four minutes of the first period and skated to a 7-2 win over Cherokee. With the win, Township has forced a third and deciding game in the SJHSIHL varsity championship last night at Voorhees in front of a standing room only partisan crowd. Eric Marano led Township with three goals and Pat Henderson scored both Cherokee goals. But the key contributors were Coach Schauffele's Tier 2 line of Jason Pelle, Mike Duczkowski and Chris Keyser as all three contributed goals, with Pelle adding two assists. The game was scoreless until the four-minute mark, with neither team coming close to scoring until Nick Martorano was all alone in front but Chris Sabol stoned him. After Pelle won the face-off, Duczkowski put the puck on net and Keyser banged home the rebound to put Township up 1-0. |
High School Ice Hockey: Late Goal by Miller Helps West Deptford Defeat Lenape Monday, March 4, 2002 By Mike Costantino Brad Miller scored with six minutes left in the game to snap a 4-4 tie and give West Deptford a 5-4 win in game 1 of the Tier 2 championship. Game 2 is Wednesday night at Skate Zone in Voorhees. Brandon Jackmuff led West Deptford with two goals and an assist; Tom Lizzio paced the Lenape attack with two goals. After Brett Gibbs scored just over a minute into the game on a shot that seemed to handcuff Lenape goalie Jason Herbert, Chris Sullivan tied the score at 1-1 jamming home a rebound of a shot by Kurt Schnepf. |
High School Ice Hockey: Henderson Scores Four as Cherokee Wins Game 1 Monday, March 4, 2002 By Mike Costantino Pat Henderson scored four goals as Cherokee rallied from a two goal deficit to beat Washington Township 7-5 to take game 1 of the best of three championship series in the SJHSIHL. Mike Duczkowski led Township with two goals. Township had the lead at 4-2 late in the second period on goals by Chris Keyser, Joe Pelle, Duczkowski and Nick Martorano surrounded by two from Henderson. But momentum switched when Townships' Pelle was called for a penalty and after disputing the call received an additional minor and a game misconduct. Bill Connolly scored on the man advantage in the last ninety seconds of the period and Cherokee was to within 4-3 heading into the final period. |
High School Ice Hockey: Cherry Hill West Wins JVB Title in Hockey Sunday, March 3, 2002 By Jack Anderson Before the largest crowd ever to witness JV games in the SJHSIHL, fans piled into the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Sunday March 3rd and they weren't disappointed as Cherry Hill West defeated Cherokee 5-2 to win the JVB Championship. After a scoreless first period with both goalies playing solidly to keep the game scoreless, Jim Markowitz gave Cherokee a brief 1-0 lead but West tied the score as A.J. Ford scored in the closing seconds of the second period. |
High School Ice Hockey: Shawnee is Dominant in Winning JVA Championship Sunday, March 3, 2002 By Jack Anderson Shawnee defeated Cherokee 5-1 in the second JV championship game played at Voorhees on March 3rd. Shawnee, the regular season champ, was in control throughout the game and received goals from four different players. Leading the way with two goals was Lenny Burkhardt. |
High School Ice Hockey: Lenape Fluders into Tier 2 Finals Sunday, March 3, 2002 By Mike Costantino Chris Fluder scored a hat trick and Lenape received a stellar performance in nets from Jason Herbert as the Indians defeated Moorestown 5-2 in the third and deciding game in the Tier 2 semi-finals. Lenape will now face West Deptford in the leagues first Tier 2 championship; the best of three begins on Monday night at Hollydell. With a packed house on hand at the Skate Zone in Voorhees, Lenape took a 1-0 lead as Fluder skated in and used the defenseman as a screen and his blast from the top of the left circle beat goalie Andrew Miller. Just over three minutes later, Lenapes' Tom Lizzio after winning a face-off and drawing the puck back to point man Eric Schiller, skated to the net and deflected Schillers' shot just under the crossbar and Lenape led 2-0. |
Event Spotlight: Phantoms Lose to Bears 4-3 as Winless Streak Continues Saturday, March 2, 2002 By David Unkle For the 12,676 fans at the First Union Spectrum last night, much of the excitement was the result of Nickelodeon's Sponge Bob Square Pants Night. The Phantoms finished the month of February with a 2-6-4 record, the worst month of the 2001-02 season. In March of last year, Philadelphia had its best month of the season with an 8-4-1 record. The way the Phantoms played last night against the Hershey Bears, they will be hard pressed to challenge last year's success. |
High School Ice Hockey: Jackmuff and Foster Lead West Deptford into Tier 2 Finals Friday, March 1, 2002 By Mike Costantino Brandon Jackmuff had four goals and an assist and Mike Foster was the difference in nets as West Deptford defeated Washington Township 5-2 to advance to the inaugural Tier 2 championship. Jason Pelle and James Novak scored the Township goals. The difference was Foster, despite going 11-4 in the regular season, whose goals against average was 4.27 while his counter part for Township, Mike Lalli, allowed just over two goals a game. After Jackmuff had scored on a breakaway to give West Deptford a 1-0 lead, Foster stoned Ryan Jagielski from point blank range to keep Township off the board. |
High School Ice Hockey: Cherokee and Township Will Face Off in Finals Friday, March 1, 2002 By Mike Costantino Washington Township will meet Cherokee in the SJHSIHL championship series beginning on Monday at Hollydell. This will be Townships' third consecutive trip to the finals, Cherokees' first. Both teams finished tied for first place this season, with Township staking claim to first by virtue of having beaten Cherokee twice during the regular season. Lets take a look at the match-up: |
High School Ice Hockey: Lenape and West Deptford Force Deciding Game in Tier 2 Semi-Finals Monday, February 25, 2002 By Jack Anderson Tom Lizzio scored a power play goal in overtime to give Lenape a 5-4 win over Moorestown and even the series at one win apiece. Game three will be Sunday night at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Lenape, realizing this could be their last game, came out firing sixteen shots on freshman goalie Andrew Miller but only Eric Shiller and Steve Mac Donnell were able to put the puck by Miller. Greg Custer and Mo Houshiarnejad scored for Moorestown with all four goals coming in a span of one minute. After a scoreless second period, each team traded goals with Lenapes' Kurt Schnepf and Mike Amato finding the net. Chris Frynkewicz and Ian Kinderman tallied for Moorestown and regulation ended tied at 4-4. Lizzio wasted no time scoring right after the face-off. |
High School Ice Hockey: It's a Shoot-out as Township Edges Cinnaminson Monday, February 25, 2002 By Mike Costantino In arguably the most exciting play in hockey, last night's semi-final game came down to a shoot-out. Washington Township converted on two of its five chances while Cinnaminson connected on only one as Township advanced to the finals for the third year in a row with a 6-5 victory. In a game that started out as a defensive struggle, not many people would have guessed the finish to this one. After a scoreless first period, Township scored when Mark Capone hustled to keep the puck in the zone and hit Eric Marano in front. Marano then slid the puck to Nick Martorano along the side of the net and his shot found the net and a 1-0 lead. Later in the second period, Bill Verdecchios' slap shot from the point found its' way through a maze of players and into the net. After two periods Township led 2-0. |
High School Ice Hockey: Cherokee Knocks off Clearview and Advances to Finals Monday, February 25, 2002 By Mike Costantino Sean Zahacewski scored two goals while Chris Sabol stopped thirty shots as Cherokee defeated Clearview 4-1 to sweep the series and advance to the finals in the SJHSIHL against Washington Township. Clearview scored its only goal early in the game taking a 1-0 lead as Bill Dunbar put home a rebound off a shot by Joe Smith. Cherokees' offense started slow and their first shot on goal came almost five minutes into the game, but it was on the power play. Mike Scian found the five hole and the game was tied at 1-1. Midway through the period Cherokee took the lead for good as Pat Henderson skated down the right side and found Jason Dragum in the slot and his one-timer found the net to make the score 2-1. |
High School Ice Hockey: Third Period the Difference as Township Defeats Cinnaminson Sunday, February 24, 2002 By Mike Costantino Jason Pelle scored early in the third period to snap a 2-2 tie and propel Washington Township to a 4-2 victory in game one of the semi-finals. Nick Martorano led Township with two goals and Anthony Mottola scored both Cinnaminson goals. Cinnaminson led 1-0 after the first period, scoring in the games first minute as Mottola ripped a shot from just inside the circle. Solid defense and strong goaltending are the strengths of Cinnaminson and that was the formula in the first period as Devin Kloss made several good saves including stopping Eric Marano twice from in close. |
High School Ice Hockey: Keyser and Lalli the Difference for Township in Tier 2 Semi's Sunday, February 24, 2002 By Mike Costantino Chris Keyser figured in all the scoring with two goals and three assists while Mike Lalli was outstanding in nets, leading Washington Township over West Deptford 5-3 in Tier 2 semi-final action last night at Hollydell. Brandon Jackmuff led the West Deptford attack with two goals. Keyser scored the only goal of the first period, getting credit for the goal as it was inadvertently deflected in by a West Deptford defenseman. Lalli made several acrobatic saves including stoning Jackmuff twice on breakaways. |
Event Spotlight: Phantoms Appear to Hit Wall in 3-0 Loss to Milwaukee Saturday, February 23, 2002 By David Unkle The Phantoms are out their game; the fans know it, the players know it, and the coach knows it. Three wins in their last ten games (3-4-3) coming into the night is indicative of a team not firing on all cylinders. Granted, there is the optimist here that will look at the Phantoms' record and say that the team is undefeated in six of ten games (three wins and three ties) but reality should quickly set in and indicate a need to look at the obvious. The injuries to Brad Tiley and John Slaney are significant; what makes these injuries overwhelming is that they come at a time when the team is struggling. |
High School Ice Hockey: Late Rally Lifts Cherokee to Game 1 Victory Friday, February 22, 2002 By Mike Costantino Cherokee scored three goals in a span of seventy-two seconds to erase a 4-2 deficit and go on to defeat Clearview 6-4 in game 1 of the semi-finals in the SJHSIHL varsity playoffs. Sean Zahacewski led the Cherokee attack with two goals and an assist and Gunnar Fox netted a hat trick for Clearview. The first two periods were in sharp contrast to the third period, with strong defense and good goaltending the formula in the first two periods. Fox and Zahacewski exchanged power play goals and high powered offense in the third period as both teams combined for eight goals. |
High School Ice Hockey: 2001-2002 Hockey Awards Winners Announced Thursday, February 21, 2002 By Mike Costantino South Jersey Sports Online is pleased to announce its third annual ice hockey awards presented to those who we felt stood out this year. This was a banner year for the SJHSIHL with over forty teams spread out in Tier 1 through JVB. The league continues to grow and the competition level has improved tremendously. The difficult task of scheduling and maintaining order has been handled with remarkable ease once again by league President John Andrews and the "Jack of all trades" Jack Anderson. |
Event Spotlight: Titans Continue Win Streak in 6-2 Victory over Nailers Thursday, February 21, 2002 By David W. Unkle Hockey players are taught from a young age to keep digging and pursuing the puck until the buzzer sounds at the end of each period. It is a fundamental concept that is sometimes overlooked, sometimes deliberately forgotten but simply not seen in many of today's athletes. The Titans' Pat Leahy, Ben Stafford, and Scott Bertoli proved exceptions to the rule last night. In an excellent example of fore-checking and fighting for the puck behind the net, Leahy scored his 16th goal of the season with 0.8 seconds left in the first period to put the Titans' on the board and set the tone for the game. Despite being thin on the blue line last night, the Titans' defense was swarming on the ice limiting Wheeling to just five shots in the first period and twenty-one in the game. |
High School Ice Hockey: South Jersey High School Ice Hockey League Final Four Preview Wednesday, February 20, 2002 By Mike Costantino For the first time in at least three years there is no clear cut favorite as the semi-finals are set in the SJHSIHL and the four teams left all have a legitimate shot at winning the championship. Defending league champion Washington Township will meet Cinnaminson and Clearview will meet Cherokee. Both series are the best of three with game one for Clearview and Cherokee on Friday night at the Skate Zone in Voorhees, and Hollydell will host game one in the Township versus Cinnaminson series on Sunday night. Lets breakdown each series: |
Event Spotlight: Phantoms Snap Streak in 4-2 Win Tuesday, February 19, 2002 By David Unkle The Phantoms, winners of one of their last seven games (1-3-3) and winless in their last four games (0-3-1), played with authority at both ends of the ice and the final score was indicative of their effort. In a game where defensemen became a valuable commodity (Brad Tiley and John Slaney were injured and Dan Peters scratched) for the Phantoms, little could go wrong on the ice for the Phantoms. It didn't always look that way for the home town team. Houston's Roman Simicek opened the night's scoring with a nice shot between the five-hole of Phantoms' goalie Maxime Ouellet at 7:17 of the first period. The Phantoms came right back with a power play goal at the 10:07 mark with Vaclav Pletka scoring his 18th goal of the season (and team leading 8th power play goal) with assists from Tomas Divisek and Brad Tiley. The Phantoms came into the night with the AHL's 16th ranked power play (17.4 percent success rate). |
High School Ice Hockey: Quakes Take Game 1 in Tier 2 Semi's Monday, February 18, 2002 By Mike Costantino Anthony Fendrick had two goals and an assist to lead the Moorestown Quakes to a 5-3 victory over Lenape in Game 1 of the Tier 2 semi-finals at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. In their first year in the league, Moorestown showed no signs of nervousness and kept their composure after Lenape took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Mike Amato late in the first period. Moments later Fendrick tied the score at 1-1, re-directing a point shot by defenseman Stosh Bangs, who was a stalwart on defense for the Quakes. |
High School Ice Hockey: Clearview Rolls Over East, Motors into Semi's Monday, February 18, 2002 By Mike Costantino Bill Dunbar, Gunnar Fox and Joe Smith each scored twice as Clearview defeated Cherry Hill East 10-0 and moved into the semi-finals in the SJHSIHL and will face Cherokee with game one taking place Friday night at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. This game was all Clearview as they scored twice in the games first two minutes, both goals set-up by Dave Gooch. |
Event Spotlight: Bullies Use Captain Rivard To Defeat Renegades Monday, February 18, 2002 By Boog Williams It was Kinko's Kids Day at the Mall and the 4,789 fans in attendance enjoyed a 4-3 win. The first 1000 kids (14 and younger) received the inaugural set of Boardwalk Bullies trading cards, were treated to special events and giveaways in the concourse, and were invited to a post game skate with the Bullies players. All this in addition to the regular lineup of between period fan activities. |
High School Ice Hockey: Williams Puts Up a Wall That Township Can't Break Down Sunday, February 17, 2002 By Mike Costantino Bryan Williams stopped thirty-seven shots while Rory Levenson and Dan Tavana each scored three goals as Eastern ended Washington Townships' JVA season with a 7-1 victory in the opening round of the playoffs. Tavana opened the scoring in the games first minute as his shot went through the five hole and Eastern led 1-0. After Williams stoned Townships' Chris Keyser on a breakaway, Paul Gainer blasted a shot just inside the circle and Eastern had a 2-0 lead. Levenson made it 3-0, scoring on a breakaway, right after serving a penalty and Eastern led 3-0 heading into the second period. |
High School Ice Hockey: Smith Nets Seven as Clearview Romps in JVA Playoff Sunday, February 17, 2002 By Mike Costantino Joe Smith scored seven goals and Wyatt Fox added three as Clearview crushed Lenape 13-1 in JVA playoff action at Hollydell on Sunday. The score was only 2-0 after the first period on two of Smith's goals. Actually, Lenape's goalie Ray York kept his team close as most of the period was spent in the Lenape end. York faced fifteen shots while his team could only muster one shot on goal. |
Event Spotlight: Phantoms Get Bit By Wolves in 5-1 Loss Saturday, February 16, 2002 By David Unkle February has been a rough month for the Phantoms with one win in their last six games (1-2-3). Last night's 5-1 loss to the Chicago Wolves at the First Union Spectrum did nothing to reverse their misfortune. In their first game following the AHL All-Star Game, the Phantoms looked a step or two behind the Wolves and their unusually porous defense allowed Chicago too many scoring opportunities. Odd man rushes and players left alone in the slot or at the side of the net were commonplace last night at the Phantoms end of the ice. |
High School Ice Hockey: Third Period Burst Allows Township to Advance Friday, February 15, 2002 By Mike Costantino Washington Township scored three goals in a span of ninety seconds to break open a close game and defeated Shawnee 5-1 in a quarterfinal elimination game played at Hollydell on Friday. Actually this game was Shawnees' other than that burst in the third period and the last minute of the second period. The first minute of the third was when Township scored there other two goals. |
Event Spotlight: Limited Number Of Tickets Remain For The Flyers' Wives 26th Annual Carnival Tuesday, February 12, 2002 By Joe Klueg A limited number of tickets remain for the 26th Annual Flyers' Wives Fight for Lives Carnival on Sunday, March 3, 2002; from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children under 12 and can be purchased by calling the Carnival Office, Monday through Friday during regular business hours, at (215) 389-9426 or in person at the Flyers Box Office in the First Union Center. Event Spotlight: Phantoms Week In Review Monday, February 11, 2002 By Al Cohen Philadelphia maintained a share of the AHL points lead (67) after going 1-1-1 on its three-game road trip last week. The Phantoms opened the trip by cruising to a 6-3 victory over South Division rival Norfolk on Wednesday. Philadelphia actually trailed 3-2 midway through the final period before tallying four unanswered goals. Mark Greig finished with two goals and an assist; Kirby Law, Guillaume Lefebvre and John Slaney all contributed two points; and Neil Little made 25 saves. |
Event Spotlight: Bullies Get Nailed By Nailers Saturday, February 9, 2002 By Boog Williams In a very exciting game, the AC Bullies and the Wheeling Nailers squared off in an ECHL game at the Boardwalk Mall. The game was played in front of 5,693 fans. The Nailers broke the 2-2 tie on a power play with seven minutes and four seconds left in the third period and nailed the game shut with an empty net goal at the end. |
Event Spotlight: Boardwalk Bullies Lack Punch in Shutout Loss to Cyclones Friday, February 8, 2002 By David W. Unkle For forty minutes, the hometown Boardwalk Bullies were able to tread water despite being out shot by the Cincinnati Cyclones (27-17) but two goals in the third period proved too much to overcome for Atlantic City in a 3-0 loss before 5,453 fans. Playing with a depleted roster, the Bullies were unable to capitalize on five power play opportunities, including two in the pivotal third period. Jeff Sirkka opened the night's scoring at 3:58 of the first period giving Cincinnati the early 1-0 lead. |
Event Spotlight: Unbeaten String Extends to Six Games as Phantoms Tie Flames 1-1 in Defensive Battle Sunday, February 3, 2002 By David W. Unkle For 59 minutes and 45 seconds, the Phantoms couldn't solve Goalie Kay Whitmore. But the game has exactly sixty minutes in regulation and that difference was all the Phantoms needed Saturday night. High School Ice Hockey: No Clear Cut Favorite for Hockey Crown Tuesday, January 1, 2002 By Mike Costantino As the SJHSIHL enjoys its holiday break and teams prepare for the stretch run to battle for positioning, for the first time in a couple of years there is no clear cut dominant team that you can say should win it all. Bunched at the top of the division are Cherokee, Clearview and Washington Township with usually no more than two points separating these teams. Township, last years champ, lost some key players and leaders and hasn't established a number one goalie. Clearview, won the title two years ago and could be the slight favorite if they play disciplined hockey and avoid the retaliatory penalties. |
