High School Football: Saturday, November 8, 2003 By Jason Brown It was one of those games that for mostly the entire game, neither team could execute the perfect play springing that player for a touchdown. In a game that the defense were the ones celebrating their play, it would be the offense that would be left out in the cold. The Warriors from New Egypt had the slight edge against host Burlington City having their chance to put points on the board, but sometimes the home field does have its advantages. With the final quarter clock ticking down under two minutes to play, runningback Greg Hodgson broke the scoreless tie with his 44-yard touchdown run giving the Blue Devils the win. |
High School Football: Saturday, November 8, 2003 By Jerome Michaels Both Florence and Palmyra were undefeated in the Freedom division, each winning five divisional games in a row. Both teams have played well enough to earn berths into the playoffs beginning next week. With all of that said, you would have expected one of those classic battles each fighting for the title. From the opening kickoff, the Flashes from Florence were hungry to demonstrate why they were undefeated in eight straight games. Shutting down Palmyra’s offense, Florence’s defense kept their opponent scoreless while the offense put 49 points on the scoreboard. With the win, Florence has clinched the Freedom Division title. |
High School Soccer: Saturday, November 8, 2003 By Crystal ParkerSJSports Staff Writer It was a goal that gave one team a sigh of relief, and the other a heartbreaking defeat in a brilliant effort. Knowing that the Ocean City boy’s soccer team was the favorite in this South Jersey Group III quarterfinals game, Highland continued to play solid soccer for two halves staying competitive against the Red Raiders. But in the end, Rich Baker’s goal in the second overtime session was the game-winner for Ocean City. The 2-1 win sent the Red Raiders to the semi-finals round looking to regain the group title. |
High School Football: Saturday, November 8, 2003 By Vincent Lewis It was a game that both teams wanted badly to either maintain or move up a seed for the upcoming post season. Deptford and Overbrook had earned a berth into the playoffs, but both had their sights set on the top position of their bracket. With a win, the Rams from Overbrook had a chance to move closer to the number one seed in the South Jersey Group 2 bracket. The Spartans had other plans, as they would maintain their top seed placement in the Group 3 bracket with their 40-21 victory at home. Deptford’s second half explosion kept their regular season record clean of any loses winning eight games in a row. |

Smith was sent off for interference with 66 seconds remaining, setting up a 4-on-3 advantage for the Phantoms. |
High School Football: Friday, November 7, 2003 By Jerome Michaels For the first quarter of this Tri-County Conference Royal Division game, it looked as if Clearview would have a chance of upsetting the Crusaders from Delsea. Holding only a seven-point lead going into the second quarter, the Crusaders dominating defense made its statement by scoring a touchdown. That’s when Josh Reimel took over and rushed for two-second half touchdowns and Delsea never looked back. The defense held Clearview in check and kept them scoreless as Delsea ran away with the 34-0 win at home. |
High School Soccer: Friday, November 7, 2003 By Susan HallSJSports Special Correspondent Daylight savings time has been an issue lately as we get closer and closer to the winter months. It looked as if this South Jersey Group II boy’s soccer game between Middle Township and Sterling would go on forever. After the fifth seed Middle Township’s second half goal sent this game into overtime, Sterling would respond finally give the home crowd something to cheer about. It would take a second overtime period to determine the winner. Scott Kent made good on his scoring opportunity and gave the fourth seeded Knights from Sterling a 2-1 overtime win. |
High School Field Hockey: Friday, November 7, 2003 By Crystal Parker Haddon Heights had just won a physical game against Overbrook in the first round of the South Jersey Group II playoffs and knew it would not get any easier. Preparing to keep that winning level, the Garnets were at the high level of play during the first half of their matchup against the number one seed Collingswood. A four goal second half proved to be too much for the visiting Garnets. Samantha Milnes and Courtney Herrman each scored twice, leading Collingswood to a 5-1 victory over eighth seeded Haddon Heights. |
High School Soccer: Friday, November 7, 2003 By Vincent LewisSJSports Staff Writer Both teams knew that each had that player that could take over a game with their ability to score goals. When sixth seeded Mainland traveled to Lenape High School to participate in the first round of the South Jersey Group IV tournament, R.J. Romeo would put the Mustangs ahead in the first half. The Indians also had a player who leads the team in goals and would respond with a goal of his own. Jeremey Ortiz countered with a goal and an assist giving Lenape a 2-1 come-from-behind victory. |
High School Ice Hockey: Friday, November 7, 2003 By Mike Costantino Mike Varano had four goals and Mike Salvatore and Rob Cross added two each as Highland skated to a 10-3 win over Hammonton. The win was their first of the season, and clearly their best game since being placed in the proper Tier. Hammonton, in just its first season, is still looking for their first victory. The game was 1-1 after the first period as Mark Weiss, who led Hammonton with two goals, scored, but Highland would score a power play goal by Andre Trapani to even things up. Moments later Dennis Cunnard tied the game at 1-1 capitalizing on a turnover. After Sheridan had given Williamstown the lead early in the second period, putting home a rebound off a point shot by Cunnard, McHugh tied the game at 2-2 scoring right off the face-off. |

High School Field Hockey: Tuesday, November 4, 2003 By Crystal Parker The first round of the South Jersey Group II field hockey playoffs began today with the fifth seeded Eagles hosting the twelfth seeded Wolverines from Woodstown. It was a first round matchup that the higher seeded West Deptford wasted little time proving that they were the better team. Brenna Lewis’ goal just minutes into this game started the ball rolling for the Eagles. Brittany Gibbs and Tiffany Hunter scored twice and West Deptford cruised to an 8-1 victory and advanced to the next round against Glassboro. |
High School Soccer: Monday, November 3, 2003 By Susan HallSJSports Special Correspondent It was the first day of the girl’s Group II playoffs, and today’s competition featured the 8th seeded Garnets from Haddon Heights hosting the 9th seeded Chiefs from Buena Regional High School. Last year, each team ended their playoff run abruptly losing in the first round. This year, both of these teams fought hard to make it to the playoff and neither wanted to repeat their fate from last year. The Lady Garnets would extend their season with a 2-0 victory and will now faced the top-seeded Pirates from Cinnaminson. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, November 3, 2003 By Mike Costantino Eric Lake stopped all twenty-nine shots and Brett Balco scored one goal and set-up another as Paul VI defeated Shawnee 2-0 in a foggy Skate Zone on Monday night. By the third period of this game, the rink was foggy due to the unseasonably warm weather this week. That didn’t seem to bother Lake as he withstood the challenge as Shawnee had numerous opportunities, particularly on the power play, having a two-man advantage on two separate occasions. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, November 3, 2003 By Mike Costantino Christopher Ball scored four goals to lead the Eastern Vikings over Timber Creek 11-1 at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Moved up to the top line to replace Brandon Tunstill who missed the game, Ball found himself playing alongside two of the top three scorers in the league in Sean Sullivan and Anthony Orner and he was able to capitalize on his opportunities. The Vikings are getting contributions from all three lines, and each accounted for the six goal first period. After Ball put home a shot by Orner to open the scoring, Joey Johnstone ripped a shot home from the slot to put Eastern up 2-0. |
