The first round of the South Jersey Group II field hockey playoffs began today with the fifth seeded Eagles hosting the twelfth seeded Wolverines from Woodstown. It was a first round matchup that the higher seeded West Deptford wasted little time proving that they were the better team. Brenna Lewis’ goal just minutes into this game started the ball rolling for the Eagles. Brittany Gibbs and Tiffany Hunter scored twice and West Deptford cruised to an 8-1 victory and advanced to the next round against Glassboro.
When Woodstown and Glassboro met on the field during the regular season, it was a very close game that each team only scored two goals apiece. If that game were used as a measuring stick, you would think that the Eagles would have little problems against the fourth seeded Bulldogs. But if the Eagles understand that any team can beat any team especially when they are not prepared, no team is safe.
Hunter’s goal at the 28:11 mark broke open the floodgates for West Deptford. Gibbs would score the next two goals and the Eagles were ahead and looking for more. Hunter and Gibbs worked together for the next score at 14:21, then again Gibbs assisted on a Melissa Fox goal and a 5-0 lead. Courtney Stetson, Chauntelle Betters and Justine Kania completed the scoring for West Deptford.
