Tom Sheridan scored twice, including the go-ahead goal early in the third period as Williamstown edged St Joseph’s Prep 4-3 in Tier 1 action at Hollydell on Friday night. Playing in only their second league game, St. Joe’s was led by Ryan McHugh with two goals. The first period saw each team scoring on a breakaway; first McHugh jumped on a puck at center ice and beat goalie Joshua Haines on the short side. Moments later Dennis Cunnard tied the game at 1-1 capitalizing on a turnover. After Sheridan had given Williamstown the lead early in the second period, putting home a rebound off a point shot by Cunnard, McHugh tied the game at 2-2 scoring right off the face-off.
St Joe’s seem to carry the play in the second half of the period, but Joshua Haines made two big stops on McHugh to keep the game at 2-2 after two. Sheridan gave Williamstown the lead for good, scoring a short-handed goal early in the third period, as his shot seemed to deflect off a defenseman. The turning point then came when McHugh was given a minor penalty and then a mis-conduct. Both penalties were good calls and St. Joe’s had lost their most productive player of the night. Williamstown capitalized on the man advantage as Tom Ruiz, on a feed from Sheridan, scored to make it 4-2. A late goal by St. Joe’s was not enough as Williamston held on for the 4-3 win.
