High School Football: Saturday, November 16, 2002 By Jerome Michaels Sure this game wasn't played in the best conditions to determine the outcome of this South Jersey Group 2 matchup. On and off rain, muddy field conditions and cold temperature...perfect good old-time football weather. Sterling, seeded sixth, used two-second quarter touchdowns to squeeze by the Pirates from Cinnaminson. The Silver Knights 14-12 win moved them into the semi-finals against the second seeded Eagles from West Deptford. |
High School Football: Saturday, November 16, 2002 By Jerome Michaels The old nursery rhythm of rain, rain go away would not come true on this day as steady rain kept this game limited to the running attack. The second seeded Gloucester welcomed the seventh seeded Schalick Cougars to John Lynch Field for a South Jersey Group 1 quarterfinals matchup. Both teams were looking to establish a running game on the wet, muddy field, but the defenses would have the upper hand. Two first half touchdowns by the Lions was good enough to defeat Schalick by a score of 15-6. |

High School Football: Friday, November 15, 2002 By Jerome Michaels When looking at any group playoff brackets for the first round, the game that usually stands out is the fourth seed versus the fifth seed. Viewed as an evenly matched game with both teams possession the talent to win, Moorestown hosting Deptford proved to be a competitive game...for as least one half. Runningback Albert Young proved to be the difference in the second half as Moorestown (8-1) scored 17 unanswered points to pull away from Deptford. The fourth seeded Quakers posted a 31-7 victory to the South Jersey Group 3 semi-final round against the top-seeded Delsea. |
High School Field Hockey: Friday, November 15, 2002 By Crystal Parker Eleven players including their goalkeeper from each team took the field this afternoon determined to play their best and capture the title. It would end with seven players per side as this evenly matched South Jersey Group 2 field hockey championship game went into overtime. The Lady Eagles' early lead looked as if West Deptford would earn another upset victory over a higher seeded team, but Camden Catholic ended all of their hopes on Liz Hutchinson game winning goal. The Lady Irish's come from behind 2-1 victory allowed them to celebrate their second straight title. |
High School Soccer: Friday, November 15, 2002 By Vincent LewisSJSports Staff Writer The game of soccer has been labeled by some people as a sport which is emotion-based with physical demands that requires endurance and explosiveness. When you get that type of performance out of each player on the field, nothing but good things can come from that type of play. The Bulldogs from Haddonfield had the momentum in their favorite but not the advantage on the scoreboard early in the contest. Well, not until the second half of this Group 2 title game at Delran High School. Haddonfield scored the only goal in this game by Paul Reiss giving the Bulldogs the 2002 championship. |
High School Ice Hockey: Friday, November 15, 2002 By Mike Costantino Chris Riggs, Bill Dunbar and Jon Probe scored two goals each as Clearview beat Shawnee 9-1 in Tier 1 action on Friday night at Hollydell. With Shawnee missing their top line and also a top defenseman, the first period was competitive. Probe scored a short-handed goal on a nice pass from Dave Gooch and with eighteen seconds left in the period, Probe scored again this time sent in on a breakaway by Mike Sullivan to make it 2-0. |
High School Ice Hockey: Friday, November 15, 2002 By Mike Costantino Christopher Lanciano had three goals and an assist and Andrew Renzi stopped all 18 shots as St. John Neumann defeated Lenape 9-0 at Hollydell on Friday night to remain undefeated in Tier 2 competition. After Curran McCauley opened the scoring early in the game, Lanciano fed a perfect pass from the corner to Iamurri in front of the net and Neumann led 2-0. Moments after the center ice face-off, Lanciano skated down the right side and his quick shot found the net and Neumann led 3-0 midway through the period. Renzi wasn't tested until early in the second period when Tom Lizzio was alone in front, but Renzi stoned him to keep the lead at three goals. |
Event Spotlight: Friday, November 15, 2002 By Patrick Williams PHILADELPHIA - The Phantoms made sure that Peter White's homecoming was a memorable one. Philadelphia skated past the Bridgeport Sound Tigers last night, 4-1, at the First Union Spectrum Antero Niittymaki made 17 saves in the win, while Ian MacNeil added a goal and an assist. White had an assist in his first game with the Phantoms since March 5, 2000. Last night's game was the first sign that the Phantoms may be adjusting to the American Hockey League's penalty crackdown, yielding just three power plays to the Sound Tigers. The Phantoms' power play, which had struggled for a good portion of the season, notched a goal against the AHL's top-ranked penalty kill. |
High School Field Hockey: Thursday, November 14, 2002 By Crystal Parker Rain has played a major role in this year's outdoor fall sports during the post season. Field conditions, scheduling conflicts and time restriction caused headaches for coaches and athletic directors through the area. Despite all of that, the Lady Eagles from West Deptford did not let the rain nor playing conditions stop them from traveling to Bishop Eustace and upsetting the number one seed. West Deptford will now visit third seeded Camden Catholic in the South Jersey Group 2 finals with their 2-1 win over Bishop Eustace. |
High School Field Hockey: Thursday, November 14, 2002 By Charlie Barker In a semifinal game of the Central Group 3 playoffs, the Lady Quakers of Moorestown shut out the Lady Lancers of Holy Cross 2-0 to advance to the next round. Even though Moorestown has one of the strongest offenses in South Jersey, this time it was their defense that made the difference in the contest. Moorestown's Beverly Wilson was the stingy netminder. |
