Eleven players including their goalkeeper from each team took the field this afternoon determined to play their best and capture the title. It would end with seven players per side as this evenly matched South Jersey Group 2 field hockey championship game went into overtime. The Lady Eagles' early lead looked as if West Deptford would earn another upset victory over a higher seeded team, but Camden Catholic ended all of their hopes on Liz Hutchinson game winning goal. The Lady Irish's come from behind 2-1 victory allowed them to celebrate their second straight title.
Camden Catholic maintained the early edge and rewarded with 3 early penalty corners. The Eagles goalkeeper Valerie Garigliano would come up big with 2 saves keeping the game scoreless. Midway through the first half, West Deptford began to apply pressure to swing the play into their favor. Their persistence paid off when Kristen Woodrow got the ball inside the circle. Brittany Gibbs redirected her shot into the cage and West Deptford led 1-0 with 3:13 remaining in the half.
For over 45 minutes, it seemed as if the Irish offense could not take advantage of the opportunities that were given to them. They never gave up trying, especially when Mo Casserly evened the game at one apiece with 3:43 remaining in regulation. The momentum quickly switched to Camden Catholic that carried over into the first overtime period. The Irish would get that all important corner possession which Hutchinson made no mistake on her shot. The sound of the ball hitting the back of the cage sent the entire Lady Irish team jumping for joy in celebration of winning this very competitive match.
