High School Ice Hockey: Sunday, October 17, 1999
By Mike Costantino
Lindsay Roy skated for the Vikings Sunday night and in doing so became the first female to compete in league play for Eastern. I arrived at Twin Rinks early in hopes of meeting Lindsay prior to her taking the ice and found her to be gracious and engaging. Standing around waiting to take the ice and surrounded by her teammates Lindsay seemed anxious and a bit nervous. When I asked her how she felt she said, "once my first shift is over I'll be able to settle down and try and help my team."

In a battle for first place in the SJHSIHL JVA Division, Delran defeated Eastern 5-3 as Brad Livingston notched a hat trick. The game marked the debut of Lindsay Roy, the first female player to skate for the Vikings and she played well. But this game belonged to Livingston, and he scored his first goal early on with Shamus Savage assisting.

The Bishop Eustace girls came into today's match up with 7 wins 3 losses and 2 ties. The Cougars had only one loss and one tie in their first ten games and thus were considered the favorites. But Cherry Hill's defense cracked just a little and the Crusaders' defense never did. Elissa Harrison, Eustace's keeper, looked very strong the entire game despite being tested several times by the Cougars' offense. And Carolyn Snyder was beaten only once by a direct kick for the only score of the game.

It was homecoming weekend for the Gloucester Catholic Rams and Gloucester City Lions. This cross-town rivalry has been a special occasion in Gloucester City for many years. Each year, fans, players, students and alumni can remember something special from each game played. This year, the game was dedicated to Mark DiDio, who passed away last year. Gloucester Catholic was able to win this game in his honor with a 14-7 victory.

When the Pirates Ed Marker was on the ice last night he was the best player by far, as St. John Neumann rolled past Cherry Hill West 9-2 in the second game played at Hollydell in the SJHSIHL on Friday night. Marker opened the scoring as he converted on a short-handed breakaway in the first minute of play and the early 1-0 lead. That lead doubled just over two minutes later as Jim Porreca scored with the assist going to Pete Klukiewski and the Pirates led 2-0.

In the feature game of the week and living up to its high billing, the Eastern Vikings edged the Lenape Indians 36-32 as both teams treated the 5000 fans in attendance to a highly entertaining game. Lenape began the scoring on a 44-yard burst up the middle by Mike Ceroli (one of his 5 TD's on the night.) Eastern would come right back on their next possession to take a 7-6 lead. Adam Taliaferro took the option pitch and darted in from 13 yards out. A John Riggins-like one-handed catch out of the backfield sparked the drive by Taliaferro, which picked up a key first down.

Adam Wiedman had four goals and an assist and Joe Pavlow added one goal and an assist to lead Collingswood over Kingsway 9-1 in a SJHSIHL game played Friday night at Hollydell. Collingswood wasted no time as they scored in the first seventeen seconds on their first shot as Pavlow set up Wiedman. About three minutes later Wiedman scored again with the assists going to Mahoney and Anthony Shapella.

The Lady Cougars (7-1-1) had a surprising loss to Triton on Tuesday and were anxious to face the much higher rated (8-3-0) Renegades. It was expected to be a very close match and it was. Neither Cherry Hill's Emily Brenner nor Shawnee's Tricia Irwin saw many shots, but the shots that did get in were tough hard saves. Marrisa Kravitz put in the one shot that did get by Irwin, with a one timer that came from a one timer from Nicole Thurston that came from a one timer from Daniel DiBruno. Not much of a chance for any goal tender.

Jim Price knew it would be a tough game for his Mustangs. The Mustangs (2-6-1) were facing the Cougars (5-1-2). The game was more than lopsided, in the first half Triton didn't get a single shot in on Cherry Hill keeper Sean Dallas. On the other end of the field, keeper Brian Brooks faced thirty-seven shots in the game. To no one's surprise and through no fault on Brook's, six of them counted.

Eastern captured their first win of the season as Adam Roy broke a 2- 2 tie midway through the third period and the Vikings held on for a 3-2 victory. The real story of the game however was the outstanding play of Scott Gideon, the Cinnaminson goalie, who overall faced fifty-five shots and kept his team in the game. Marc Manara opened the scoring for Eastern with just under four minutes played scoring an unassisted goal after a flurry of shots at Gideon.

The Edgewood girls tennis team experienced many ups and downs this week. We started out strong on Saturday at Deptford, turning in a 5-0 match. On Tuesday, the team headed to Overbrook for the Olympic Conference Tournament. With all three singles players and both doubles teams involved, Edgewood's presence could not be ignored. Alexis Switenko won her first round match in two sets, as did Erin Riley.
