High School Tennis: Monday, October 11, 1999
By Andrea Johnson The Edgewood girls tennis team experienced many ups and downs this week. We started out strong on Saturday at Deptford, turning in a 5-0 match. On Tuesday, the team headed to Overbrook for the Olympic Conference Tournament. With all three singles players and both doubles teams involved, Edgewood's presence could not be ignored. Alexis Switenko won her first round match in two sets, as did Erin Riley. Unfortunately, injury prevented third singles player, Kristin Wolf, from finishing her match. While first doubles had a preliminary round bye, Michelle Hammersley and Jennifer Cooper (second doubles) took care of business, winning their match against Jessica McClintock and Margot Ricci of Cherry Hill West ( 7-5, 6-0 ). Second doubles, Andrea Johnson and Beth Chisholm, won their quarterfinal match in two sets, and in doing so earned a second day of competition. Switenko also went on to win her quarterfinal match, securing first team All-Conference honors and a spot in the semifinals. Although the second day proved to be less successful than the first, Edgewood walked away with All-Conference honors in both singles and doubles. On Thursday, we boarded the bus again, this time heading to Sterling. Once again, the team proved their abilities, earning another win with a score of 5-0. Cass Young, who replaced the injured third singles player Kristin Wolf, won her first singles win. On Friday, Washington Township handed us a tough 3-2 loss. Excellent play was exhibited by both Alexis Switenko and Erin Riley, who won their individual matches. Tuesday, the seven varsity players head to Jackson for our state match. The week intensifies as we head to Cherokee on Wednesday and Bishop Eustace on Friday.
