Lacrosse. What a great sport. Fun, fast, and action packed. Are you wearing the right equipment? If not, do so. With the school craze of wearing wrist bracelets I thought it was just a silly thing to do. First I wore my yellow one for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Now, this was not a silly gesture, my mom died of cancer so thought this would be a tribute to her. I really felt good about that. |

It was a game that could have gone either way. Putting their nineteen game winning streak on the line in the semifinals, the Shawnee Renegades were looking to advance to the boy's lacrosse Group IV finals for the first time in their brief three year history. Amazingly, Shawnee has put together a program that could compete with the more experienced teams from the state and it showed on the field, with their final record of the season and the second seed in this year's tournament. The third seeded Montclair squad was out to prove that they deserve a trip to the finals as well. With the final possession at the end of regulation and the first overtime, Shawnee would attempt to win this game during the second overtime period. But with just over a minute and a half remaining in the sudden death period, Montclair’s Ethan Ledley deposited the game winner and end Shawnee's wonderful season with a 9-8 decision. |

Just as the seeding predicted, the top four teams in the South A girl’s lacrosse bracket were on pace to advance to the semifinals. Moorestown, Shawnee and Eastern had won their quarterfinals match-up and it was left to the Minutemaids to not only defeat the twelfth seeded Lady Cougars from Cherry Hill East, but also to overcome a halftime deficit. The fourth seeded Minutemaids found themselves trailing at the break by a goal but turned up the defense and especially the offense during the second half. Washington Township held their opponent scoreless the rest of the way allowing the offense to take center stage and score nine times. Kelly Angstadt and Katie Lofton led the scoring success by scoring four goals each and Washington Township advanced with their 14-6 victory. |

It was a game that could not be decided in regulation. Two teams with similar goals showed why this South Jersey Group B quarterfinals girl’s lacrosse game had no one running for cover during a rainy overtime game. The fifth seeded Fighting Irish from Camden Catholic and fourth seeded Panthers from Collingswood would battle to an 18-18 deadlock at the end of regulation. Two early goals by Collingswood during the extra period were quickly erased by Katie Gallagher. Not satisfied with those goals, Gallagher worked her way past the defense and scored the game winner in sudden death to defeat Collingswood by the narrowest of margins. With the 22-21 victory, the Fighting Irish will travel to play top seeded Holy Cross. |

The first round of the girl’s lacrosse South A bracket had began and should end with Moorestown yet again the favorite to win the tournament. The five time defending champions have every right to be labeled the favorite with every player on the squad having the experience of a winning program. The top seeded Lady Quakers were hosting the sixteen seeded Toms River South and found out first hand how deadly this lacrosse team could be. After missing net on their first five shot attempts of the game, Gulia Giordano started the scoring success with the first two goals of the game. She had started a string of twelve goals in a row for the Quakers. When the final horn was sounded, Moorestown would be rewarded with a 20-2 victory and continue to host another game at home. |

There are several reasons the Lady Panthers from Collingswood are in first place in the Olympic Conference Freedom Division. Experience, a winning attitude, good coaching and players that know how to win would be some of the highlights listed by any team that walks away at the end of a game victorious. Kate Feeley would be a good example of a player who knows how to win and score plenty of goals. When the Panthers traveled to Cherry Hill West, Feeley help Collingswood pick up the 17-11 victory by scoring her 100th and 101st goal in her career. |

Talking about know your opponent, the two Cherry Hill high school girl’s lacrosse team took the field in a very competitive Olympic Conference matchup. Cherry Hill East was representing the American Division well by holding down the top position while Cherry Hill West was right in the middle of the pack of the Patriot Division. Even though these cross city rivals represent two different divisions, there were very familiar and formable opponents. The two teams were tied at halftime and this game would be decided during the second half when the Lions took their first lead of the game. There are different ways a coach prepares their team before each and every game of the season. When the players take the field at the start of the game, Cherokee coach T.J. Viereck had to somewhat change his philosophy a bit after a loss. The Chiefs went down in defeat to a more experienced team in Ramapo in the last game and were taking on a new boy’s lacrosse team in the Cougars from Cherry Hill East. Knowing they were the heavy favorites to win, the Chiefs worked on their passing and motion plays rather than the finesse game. With that patience and letting the game come to them, Cherokee posted early goals by Matt Dunn, Eric Olson and Kevin Sterling to win this game by a 14-1 margin. |

The Olympic Conference battle between Camden Catholic and Cherry Hill West was a classic example of using your last at bats when it counts. Six lead changes, four doubles, one triple and a homerun had all of the makings of a dramatic win. With Camden Catholic regaining the lead by one run during their top half of the seventh inning, the Lions used their last at bat to the fullest. West not only tied the game, they also were able to pull out the victory when Frank Schmidt’s single drove home the winning run. It is so easy to continue the discussion about this year's boy lacrosse season and how it will be a learning experience for many of the teams. That learning curb is even steeper for the addition of so many new players participating in the sport and how it will take some time for those individuals to polish up their skills. Hosting the first game of the season has its advantages as the comforts of home are right there for you. The Cougars from Cherry Hill West seem to take advantage of their surroundings as they were in complete control of their inter-conference girl’s lacrosse competition with Camden Catholic. For an entire half and then the majority of the second half, the Cougars matched the favorite Camden Catholic team goal for goal and held a lead very early in the second half.
