High School Softball: Sterling Defeats Top Seed to Claim Title Thursday, May 31, 2007 By Joyce Sagerty The top two teams of the South Jersey Group 2 softball tournament were on a collision course when the battle for the sectional title began. The number one seeded Lady Hawks from Haddon Township were hosting a very familiar opponent in the Lady Knights from Sterling. During the regular season, the Hawks were able to defeat their Colonial Conference opponents twice and they were looking for the sweep. Sterling would use this opportunity to put enough runs on the scoreboard and finally defeat Haddon Township when it really counted. The Knights rally during the fifth inning gave them a lead and they never looked back. Sterling would defeat the Hawks by a 9-4 score and claimed a well deserved title. |
High School Softball: Highland Advances against a Familiar Opponent Thursday, May 24, 2007 By Susan Hall The start of the South Jersey Group 3 softball tournament would begin at Highland for the Lady Tartans were they would compete against their neighboring rival Triton Mustangs. Throughout the regular season, both teams have their stories to tell about how they were able to come away with a dramatic win. But that's now in the past and a new season was beginning and this time it was Highland who would take charge of this game with their bats. The Tartans would score at least a run in every inning except one during their first round action of the tournament play. Highland's quick start allowed them to defeat Triton by a 10-4 margin. |
High School Softball: Camden Catholic Puts It All Together Monday, May 21, 2007 By Joyce Sagerty It was a game that both teams would remember how the last meeting ended on the field. The Lady Crusaders from Bishop Eustace used their last at bat to steal away a one run victory over Camden Catholic. During their rematch, there wouldn't be a dramatic come-from-behind victory but the Lady Irish would use clutch hitting and good pitching to even the score. Camden Catholic's early run support allowed starting pitcher Alyssa O'Donnell and the rest of the defense limited their opponent to a single run. The Irish would win this game by a 6-1 victory. |
Softball Spotlight: Devils Sweep Warriors Sunday, May 20, 2007 By Bob Heller Erin Degnan and Rachel Morgan pitched complete game wins and Megan Trimble hit her third home run of the season as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's softball team took both games of a doubleheader against Nyack College, 4-2 and 6-1 Friday afternoon at McNeill Field. The Devils improve to 11-19 overall with the two wins and 8-8 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. Nyack falls to 6-19 overall and 3-11 in league games. USP's 11 wins are the most by a Devils softball team since the 2004 season. |
High School Softball: Paul VI Stays Ahead of the Rain and the Crusaders Wednesday, May 16, 2007 By Stephanie Wright When the day began, there was a weather report of a chance of rain could postpone most outdoor activities. With that news, most players might not even want to take the field. That's when the coaching staff must find a way to motivate their players preparing them mentally. It appeared that the Lady Eagles from Paul VI got the message when they were taking on the Lady Crusaders from Bishop Eustace in an Olympic Conference National Division softball game. In a rain shortened game, starting pitcher Danielle Schafhauser would not allow a run to cross home plate and with the help of her teammates Paul VI would outscore the Crusaders 3-0 through five innings. |
High School Softball: Eastern Wins Pitching Duel at Triton Monday, May 14, 2007 By Susan Hall It only took one run, but that run that seemed so innocent was the biggest run of the game. During their first at bat, the Lady Vikings from Eastern was able to score a run and jumped out to an early lead against the Lady Mustangs from Triton. As the game progressed through the middle innings, the one run was the main focus by both teams. Starting pitchers Brittany Hicks for Eastern and Britney Yocum for the Mustangs were able to keep their opponents scoring any runs. But that lone run to start the game would hold up and the Vikings would pick up an Olympic Conference win. |
College Softball: Raptor of the Week: Autumn Millett Monday, May 14, 2007 By Mike Ballard Senior right fielder Autumn Millett ended her stellar four-year Rutgers-Camden softball career by hitting .500 (4-for-8) at the NCAA Fayetteville Regional May 10-11. She finished with Rutgers-Camden career records for games (187), at bats (549), hits (194), runs (151), total bases (345), RBIs (146), home runs (36) and walks (82). She set single-season records in 2007 for hits (65), RBIs (50), home runs (13) and total bases (117) while leading the team in batting (.464), slugging (.836) and on-base percentage (.525). She also earned a berth on the Louisville Slugger/NFCA East Region First Team. |
High School Softball: Florence Keeps Their Winning Streak in Tact Saturday, May 12, 2007 By Susan Hall With the postseason not too far away, there are two teams who aren't worried about qualifying for the playoffs. In a non-league softball game, the Silver Knights from Sterling were hosting the Lady Flashes from Florence. Both of these teams are amongst the leaders of their division and for them, every win moves them closer to capturing the division or conference title. Starting pitcher Melissa Mehrer had everything going her way for Florence as she not only hit a home run but also completed the game and struck out twelve batters. Florence would shutout Sterling by an 11-0 score and extended their winning streak to seven games. |
College Softball: Raptor of the Week: Megan Farrell Monday, May 7, 2007 By Mike Ballard Senior pitcher Megan Farrell hurled every inning at the New Jersey Athletic Conference Softball Championship during Rutgers-Camden's run to the 2007 title. Farrell went 4-0 with a 0.75 ERA in 28 innings, while also leading the team with a .556 batting average and a .714 on-base percentage. Farrell also won Raptor of the Week honors on April 23. During its run of excellence in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, the Rutgers-Camden softball team had posted numerous accomplishments, but there was a new one the Lady Raptors added this season en route to winning the NJAC title May 6 at Montclair State University. For the first time in program history, Rutgers-Camden swept through the NJAC Softball Championship as it successfully defended its conference title with a 4-1 victory over Rowan University. The victory gave Rutgers-Camden its third NJAC championship in four years, a span which also saw them win the title in 2004 and 2006, and finish as the conference runnerup in 2005. |
High School Softball: Williamstown's Late Rally Stuns Highland Friday, May 4, 2007 By Susan Hall Lately, there have been quite a few games that have demonstrated that a game is never over until the last out has been recorded. With that being said, no lead is safe no matter what inning the game is played in. The Lady Braves from Williamstown has been playing well this season and continues to win games keeping them among the leaders of the Tri-County Conference Royal Division. Not that far behind was the Tartans from Highland who held a two run lead heading into the final inning. That's when Williamstown finally produced some runs during the top of the seventh and rallied to defeat Highland by a 4-2 margin. |
High School Softball: Thrilling Seventh Inning Win Ignites Garnets Thursday, May 3, 2007 By Stephanie Wright With the cutoff date to qualify for the playoffs not that far away, teams have been competing at a higher level doing whatever they can to extend their regular season. Two teams who just would not give up were West Deptford and Haddon Heights. These teams from the Colonial Conference knew the importance of this softball game and neither one of them gave up even when they were behind on the scoreboard. After West Deptford extended their lead to two runs, the Garnets needed to come up big during their last at bat. Haddon Heights would push across three runs during the bottom of the seventh inning and defeat the Lady Eagles by an 8-7 margin. |
Raptors of the Week: Natalie Powell and Mike Fox Monday, April 30, 2007 By Mike Ballard Sophomore softball pitcher Natalie Powell and junior track star Mike Fox share Raptor of the Week honors after posting outstanding performances during the week for their Rutgers-Camden teams. Powell went 3-0 with a 0.81 ERA to spark the Lady Raptors’ 4-0 week in softball. She allowed only two earned runs in 17.1 innings, hurled 5.1 innings of shutout relief in a comeback win over Rowan April 24 and won both ends of a doubleheader at Rutgers-Newark April 28. Fox, meanwhile, beat out a field of 56 runners to win the 800 meters at the Lions Invitational April 28, setting a Rutgers-Camden program record in the process with a 1:52.76 clocking. |
Softball Spotlight: Saturday, April 28, 2007 By Bob Heller Bloomfield College banged out 29 hits in the two games against the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's softball team Saturday afternoon as they clinched a playoff spot by defeating the Devils 12-4 and 9-4 at McNeil Field in Philadelphia. The two losses end the 2007 season for the Devils with a 14-23 overall record and a 10-12 record in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) games, narrowly missing one of the six playoff spots. USP's 14 wins are the most since the 2000 season. USP's 14-23 record is also an 11.5 game improvement over their 2006 squad that went 4-37. Bloomfield improves to 20-16 overall and finishes the regular season with a 14-8 CACC record. |
Softball Spotlight: Thursday, April 26, 2007 By Bob Heller All nine players in the batting order recorded at least one hit apiece as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's softball team belted a season-high 19 hits in their 10-4 non-league win over Chestnut Hill College Thursday afternoon at McNeil Field. The win improves the Devils overall record to 14-21, their most wins since the 2000 season. Chestnut Hill falls to 9-16. Ashley Schappell, Danielle Czajka, Samantha Tu and Brittany Brown had three hits apiece to lead the Devils assault on the Griffins pitching with Czajka driving in three runs. Bethanne Bossert and Brittany Ebersole had two hits apiece with Bossert driving in a pair of runs. Erin Degnan pitched a complete game for her second consecutive win, allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits while striking out seven. |
High School Softball: Wednesday, April 25, 2007 By Jill Hughes It was another softball competition between two Colonial Conference teams looking to extend their current winning streak. The Lady Herd from Woodbury was in search of their third win in a row when they traveled to Audubon High School. On this day, the Green Wave from Audubon quickly took control of this game by scoring seven runs during the second inning. This game would end early as Audubon posted an 11-0 victory and extend their current winning streak to six games in a row. Lauren Beckas would pick up the win on the mound for Audubon. |
Softball Spotlight: Wednesday, April 25, 2007 By Bob Heller The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's softball team missed a golden opportunity to solidify a playoff spot in the upcoming Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championships, splitting a twinbill with Philadelphia University Tuesday Afternoon at McNeil Field. The Devils took the first game 8-3 but lost the second 10-1. The Devils' record remains at .500 in conference games with a 10-10 mark. Overall USP is now 13-21. USP is currently tied with Post University for the sixth and final playoff spot with two conference games remaining. Post has four CACC games left and holds the tiebreaker over the Devils by virtue of their doubleheader sweep earlier this year. The Rams fall to 10-24 overall and 6-12 in league play. |
High School Softball: Tuesday, April 24, 2007 By Susan Hall You have to give a team credit for being able to score runs during the first time up at bat. Coaches and players do their best before a game starts to get themselves motivated for a game. When the Lady Cougars from Cherry Hill East visited the Lady Hawks from Haddon Township, their early two run lead would hold up for six and a half innings. Haddon Township would battle back to tie this game during the bottom of the seventh and then win it in the eighth inning. Bridget Settles would score the winning run on a passed ball and the Hawks would walk away with the 3-2 victory. |
College Softball: Monday, April 23, 2007 By Mike Ballard Senior Megan Farrell compiled a 2-1 record, one save and a 1.17 ERA in four games last week as the Rutgers-Camden softball team went 3-1 against New Jersey Athletic Conference opponents. She won both ends of a doubleheader against Richard Stockton College April 19, hurling a three-hitter in a 2-1 victory in the opener and winning the nightcap in relief, 5-3. She pitched 2.1 hitless innings without allowing an earned run in that game. In a split against William Paterson University April 21, she allowed only one earned run in a 4-2 loss in the opener, then came back with 2.2 innings of relief to save a 5-2 victory in the nightcap. For the week she pitched 18 innings, allowed only a .191 opponent batting average, raised her record to 8-5 and lowered her ERA to 2.22. She also had three putouts, 12 assists and only one error on the week. It is the second Raptor of the Week honor this season for Farrell, who also won the award March 19. |

These were the numbers put up by the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's softball team Saturday afternoon as they continue in their quest for a playoff berth, splitting their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader with Dominican College in Orangeburg, New York. The Devils took the first game, 14-11 in eight innings. Dominican, however, rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the second game 6-5. With the split the Devils are now 12-20 overall and 9-9 in league play. Dominican is 15-15 overall and 7-7 in league play. |
High School Softball: Friday, April 20, 2007 By Susan Hall The Colonial Conference has always been one of the toughest conferences for teams to win due to the number of teams. Every one of those eleven teams on any given day has the chance to come away with the win. The Lady Lions from Lindenwold traveled to Haddon Township to take on the Hawks. Haddon Township had won six of their first seven games and would add on to their winning ways. The Lady Hawks would erupt for six runs in the second inning to take control of this game early. Starting pitcher Katie O'Riordan would earn the victory when Township posted and 11-1 victory over the Lions. |
High School Softball: Saturday, April 14, 2007 By Susan Hall The Lady Lions from Gloucester has the luxury of two very good starting pitchers on their team. Both Jill Stafford and Sam Dobleman have been perfect on the mound keeping opposing batters off balanced. In this game, Dobleman would get another start and was looking to extend Gloucester's unbeaten streak to six games. The Lady Cougars from Schalick and Gloucester would not score a run until the bottom of the fifth inning when Kelsey Cutler connected on a two run homerun. Schalick would get one of those runs back to pull within a run. Dobleman would take care of things during the final inning and preserve Gloucester's 2-1 victory. |
Softball Spotlight: Saturday, April 14, 2007 By Bob Heller Brittany Brown's solo walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the University of the Sciences women's softball team to a 6-5 win in the opening game of this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against nationally ranked Caldwell College at McNeill Field in Philadelphia. The Cougars, ranked 12th in the most recent coaches’ poll, salvaged a split with a 5-0 win over the Devils in game two. The win was the Devils first ever victory over Caldwell. USP had been 0-14 going back to the year 2000. The Devils record with the split is now 9-17 overall and 6-6 in league play. Caldwell fell to 20-8 overall and 10-4 in league play. |
High School Softball: Friday, April 13, 2007 By Susan Hall The Lady Eagles from West Deptford have been an on row starting out their new softball season. By winning their first three games, they have remained amongst the leaders of the Colonial Conference. Also representing the same competitive conference, Audubon dropped their season opener and was looking to win their second game in a row against another undefeated team. West Deptford's Michele Black has been successful keeping their opponents from generating runs and she would continue to do so today. Audubon would score only one run in this game but that was enough for Lauren Beckas to pitch seven scoreless innings for the Green Wave. Audubon's defense came up with some nice plays to preserve their 1-0 victory. |
Softball Spotlight: Tuesday, April 10, 2007 By Bob Heller Mia Crotti drove in five runs and Megan Trimble hit her second home run of the season and scored four times as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's softball team salvaged a split with Holy Family University with an 11-6 win in the nightcap of this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader at McNeill Field on the USP campus. The win gave the Devils a split with the Tigers, who snapped USP's four game winning streak with a 6-3 win in the opener. USP improved to 8-14 overall and 5-5 in league play. Holy Family fell to 11-13 overall and 6-4 in league play. The 11-6 win was the Devils first victory over the Tigers since the 2001 season, a span of 11 games including today's opener. |
High School Softball: Monday, April 9, 2007 By Joyce Sagerty Spring is that time of the year that most people look forward to with the warm temperatures and sunny skies allowing them to enjoy all of the outdoor sporting events. So far the weather is not cooperating with the season, but that's not stopping Washington Township from heating up the base paths. The cooler temperatures might have slowed down a few teams from picking up those wins during the first week of the season, but the Minutemaids have been able to provide run support for starting pitcher Alyssa Maiese. So far this season, Maiese has not given up a single run and was looking to continue that streak at Camden Catholic. Washington Township broke open a close game during the late innings and was able to pick up a 6-0 win over the Fighting Irish. |
Softball Spotlight: Saturday, April 7, 2007 By Bob Heller Sarina Lavooy drove in the winning runs in the opening game against Felician College and Megan Trimble became the Devils all-time RBI leader with five RBI on the afternoon as the University of the Sciences women's softball team completed a doubleheader sweep of the Golden Falcons 9-8 and 7-5 at McNeill Field in Philadelphia. The doubleheader was the Devils home opener and with the two wins, they complete a perfect 4-0 week and improve to 4-4 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games and 7-13 overall. Felician falls to 7-8 overall and 1-5 in league play. |
College Softball: Tuesday, April 3, 2007 By Mike Ballard Rutgers-Camden senior shortstop Kim Zlupko doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning of the first game and Ramapo senior Marissa Marinotossed a five-hitter to win the nightcap as the two teams split a New Jersey Athletic Conference softball doubleheader here Tuesday. Rutgers-Camden won the opener, 1-0, behind a six-hit shutout from senior Megan Farrell, which snapped Ramapo's 10-game winning streak. The Roadrunners turned the tables in the second game with a 3-1 win, snapping the Lady Raptors' 11-game winning streak. The doubleheader, which was a rematch of the two NJAC teams that met six times last season, including once in the NCAA Division III Softball Championship in North Carolina, leaves both teams with a 3-1 conference record in the early season. Rutgers-Camden, the defending national champion, stands at 14-8 overall. Ramapo, currently ranked No. 12 in the country, is 14-4. |
High School Softball: Tuesday, April 3, 2007 By Susan Hall It was a match-up between two of the most dominating pitchers in the area. Camden Catholic's Alyssa O'Connell versus Gloucester Catholic's Brittney Carosia received most of the attention on this day as the Lady Rams were looking to pick up their second win in the road this time at Camden Catholic. The Lady Irish would gain the early momentum in this game, but a close play at home quickly swung this game in favor of the visiting team. A key hit by Shauna Vennell provided only run of the game for Gloucester Catholic and the Lady Rams would pick up the 1-0 victory in a non-league game. |
Softball Spotlight: Tuesday, April 3, 2007 By Bob Heller Rachel Morgan and Laura Flint pitched complete games and Megan Trimble recorded her 100th career hit as both pitching and hitting came together yesterday afternoon for the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia's softball team. The Devils snapped an eight-game losing streak with a doubleheader sweep of Goldey Beacom College, 10-2, and 9-2 in Wilmington, Delaware. The two wins were the Devils first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference wins this season and improve their conference record to 2-4. The wins also break an 18-game conference losing streak dating back to last season. USP improves to 5-13 overall. Goldey Beacom falls to 1-19 overall and 0-8 in league play. |
High School Softball: Monday, April 2, 2007 By Susan Hall The Lady Bulldogs from Haddonfield traveled to Haddon Heights to start off the new softball season. Both of these teams were looking to begin their season by playing fundamental softball in order to come away with the win. This game started out to be a pitcher's duel forcing the batters to do whatever it takes to get the bat on the ball and making something happen in the field. The Garnets finally broke the scoreless tie late in the game and took a two run lead up until the final innings. Bobbie Padgett pitched a complete game for Haddon Heights and the Lady Garnets picked up the 2-1 victory during their home opener. |
College Softball: Monday, March 19, 2007 By Mike Ballard Senior pitcher/infielder Megan Farrell had an outstanding week at the Florida Coast Spring Training Camp, both at the plate and on the mound as the Lady Raptors swept all eight games they played. The senior outfielder appeared in the Devils' second game against Drexel University on Monday, March 12th, getting two hits and a walk in three plate appearances. Softball Spotlight: Wednesday, March 14, 2007 By Bob Heller Sarina Lavooy became the all-time hit leader in the 24-year history of women's softball at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia yesterday afternoon. However the Devils dropped both ends of their doubleheader against the Yellow Jackets of American International College 5-3 and 11-7. USP falls to 3-9 overall with the two losses. AIC improves to 3-6 overall. Lavooy entered the game tied with all-time leader Michelle Manship at 125 career hits. After going 0-for-2 with a walk in her first three plate appearances, Lavooy hit a 1-2 pitch up the middle in the bottom of the seventh for her 126th career hit, putting her alone atop the all-time leaders. Lavooy added four more hits in the nightcap and now has 130 for her career. |
College Softball: Monday, March 12, 2007 By Mike Ballard Senior outfielder Autumn Millett put on quite an offensive performance at the NFCA Division III Leadoff Classic in Florida over the weekend. In six games, Millett went 10-for-20 (.500) with six runs, eight RBIs, two doubles and three home runs. She had a 1.050 slugging percentage in those games. Along the way, Millett had six RBIs against Webster to set the Rutgers-Camden career RBI record with 105, breaking Michelle Schlichtig's old mark of 104. By the end of the weekend, Millett extended her program career records to 107 RBIs and 28 home runs. |
Softball Spotlight: Monday, March 12, 2007 By Bob Heller In their first games since returning from their spring break trip to Florida, the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's softball team took on nearby Drexel University in a doubleheader at Drexel Field this afternoon. The Dragons swept both games, defeating the Devils, 6-1 in the opener and 9-0 in the nightcap. The Devils fall to 3-7 with the losses. Drexel improved to 4-3 on the season with the two wins. |
College Softball: Wednesday, January 31, 2007 By Mike Ballard Senior pitcher Michelle Schlichtig put the Rutgers University-Camden softball program in the national spotlight last May when she hurled the Lady Raptors to the NCAA Division III championship. Schlichtig, a two-time First Team All-American, was honored for her accomplishments Sunday, Jan. 28, by the New Jersey Sports Writers Association. Schlichtig was named "Female Athlete of the Year" at the 71st anniversary banquet, which was held at the Pines Manor in Edison. During her three years at Rutgers-Camden, Schlichtig practically re-wrote the program's record books. As a senior, she went 32-3 with a 1.03 ERA, 29 complete games, 17 shutouts and 304 strikeouts in 224.2 innings. She allowed only 113 hits, 55 walks and 33 earned runs. |
College Softball: Friday, October 27, 2006 By Hugh Tsung On May of 2006, the Rutgers University softball team made history and the university community proud for winning the 2006 NCAA Division III softball title. It was the first time in Rutgers history that an athletic team won national championship. While the Team was formally crowned the title, there were still some awards to pass. Each player was not given her well-deserved New Jersey Athletic Conference Title Trophies. Wednesday, October 18, there was once again a celebration. This time on the heart of the Rutgers Camden Campus during the free period where all students can come and witness each softball player receive her long awaited trophy. |
High School Softball: Thursday, June 1, 2006 By Susan Hall The road to the group finals would have been a Cinderella story for either of these two teams. For Haddon Township and Overbrook, neither one of these teams were supposed to have advanced past the higher seeds to participate in the group finals, let alone win it. This year's run at the South Jersey Group 2 softball title proves that no matter what your regular season record may be, qualifying for the tournaments gives a team one chance at being the best. Haddon Township's late lead was erased by the Lady Rams to send this championship game into extra innings. It would take a two out hit by Brianne Moore during the bottom of the ninth inning to give Haddon Township the 3-2 victory and the group title. |
High School Softball: Tuesday, May 30, 2006 By Susan Hall It was on their wish list of items they wanted to accomplish but a game had to be played in order to receive their rewards. The Lady Hawks from Haddon Township knew that Schalick would not make it easy for them to advance to the South Jersey Group 2 finals. The Hawks would have to play their game and that would be to continue to hit the ball hard and the runs will come. Eight of their runs would come at the right time as Haddon Township posted a 9-6 victory over the Lady Cougars from Schalick. The Hawks will travel to the group finals against Overbrook. |
High School Softball: Tuesday, April 23, 2006 By Susan Hall The first round of the South Jersey Group 2 softball tournament began with the eleventh seeded Lady Pirates from Cinnaminson traveling to Haddon Township to compete against the sixth seeded Lady Hawks. Both of these teams have experience advancing to the next round and were looking to continue with that success. Colleen O’Riordan was in complete control of her pitches as Haddon Township limited the Pirates’ scoring chances. A four run fourth inning was more than enough support for the Hawks’ starting pitcher and Haddon Township would be that team moving on to the next round. With their 6-0 victory, the Lady Hawks will now face a familiar opponent as they will travel to Audubon. |
College Softball: Monday, May 22, 2006 By Mike Ballard The Rutgers-Camden Scarlet Raptors completed a 7-0 run through the 2006 NCAA Division III Softball Championship on May 22, posting a 3-2 victory over two-time defending champion St. Thomas to capture the first national title in school history. When Rutgers-Camden softball coach Carl Taylor posed his 2006 Scarlet Raptors for their team picture, he used the school’s Hall of Fame wall as a backdrop and requested the slogan “A Team to Remember” be inserted under that photo on the media guide cover. Taylor had no idea how prophetic he would be. |
High School Softball: Tuesday, May 16, 2006 By Susan Hall What a difference a day can be. In an emotional battle yesterday against Timber Creek, Seneca found themselves trailing by a run heading into the seventh inning. Not only did they send that game into extra innings, the Golden Eagles found a way during the ninth inning to defeat the Chargers by a run. Not wasting any time against today's opponent, Bishop Eustace, Seneca jumped out to a five run lead and never looked back. Kim Narkiewicz knocked in three of those runs with the first of two home runs on the day and Seneca would have an easier time picking up the victory at Bishop Eustace. The Eagles would post a 12-1 win in an Olympic Conference National Division softball game. |
College Softball: Tuesday, May 16, 2006 By Mike Ballard Rutgers University-Camden senior Michelle Schlichtig earned her sixth honor of the season as the New Jersey Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week when the NJAC released its weekly awards today. Schlichtig had a phenomenal week on the mound and at the plate while leading the Lady Raptors to the NCAA East Regional title. Rutgers-Camden, 43-5 and ranked No. 3 nationally, will begin play in the 2006 NCAA Division III Softball Championship in Raleigh, NC, Friday at 11 a.m. Its first opponent will be NJAC foe Ramapo College. In three games at the NCAA Regionals, Schlichtig fired a trio of two-hit shutouts, running her scoreless innings streak to 24. She walked five and struck out 26 in the 21 innings while raising her record to 28-3. The 28 wins set a new single-season program record, breaking her mark of 27 set last year. She also extended her school records to 16 shutouts this season and 39 for her career. She helped her own cause by fielding her position flawlessly, collecting nine assists during the tournament. |
High School Softball: Monday, May 15, 2006 By Stephanie Wright With so much focus on teams qualifying for the playoffs, coaches whose teams that have fallen short of the requirements must continue to motivate their players and achieve a different set of goals. For Haddon Heights and Gateway, their chance to move into the state tournament may be over but the regular season must go on. The Lady Garnets finally ended their two game losing streak when they traveled to Gateway to participate in an Colonial Conference softball game. Bobbi Padget would pitch her way to an 8-1 victory for Haddon Heights giving up just two hits. |
College Softball: Monday, May 15, 2006 By Mike Ballard While leading Rutgers-Camden to the regional title and into the 2005 NCAA Div. III Softball Championship in Raleigh, NC, Michelle Schlichtig put on an amazing show in the East Regional held at Rutgers-Camden. On the mound, Schlichtig went 3-0 (raising her record to 28-3 and breaking her own single-season victory mark of 27 set last year), throwing a trio of two-hit shutouts and allowing only five walks in 21 innings. She struck out 26. At the plate, she went 8-for-9 (.889) with four doubles, one home run, four runs and three RBIs, while in the field she collected nine assists in as many chances. At the Regionals she also broke her own single-season hit record (54 set in 2005), raising the bar to 56. She also tied career marks with 243 assists and 39 doubles heading into the national championships. |
College Softball: Sunday, May 14, 2006 By Mike Ballard The third time was the charm. After knocking on the door of the NCAA finals for two consecutive years, the Rutgers University-Camden softball team swept into the national finals here May 14. The top-seeded Lady Raptors rode the two-hit shutout pitching of senior All-American Michelle Schlichtig as they defeated second-seeded Rowan University, 5-0, to capture the NCAA East Regional. With their victory, the Raptors become the first team in school history to advance to the NCAA finals. Rutgers-Camden, which barely missed the national finals when it finished as the regional runnerup in both 2004 and 2005, will begin play in the 2006 NCAA Division III Softball Championship Friday at 11 a.m. The Lady Raptors will face a familiar opponent in New Jersey Athletic Conference rival Ramapo College, which captured the Mid-Atlantic Regional in Salisbury, MD. |
College Softball: Thursday, May 11, 2006 By Mike Ballard Top-seeded Rutgers University-Camden rode the two-hit, 15-strikeout pitching of senior All-American Michelle Schlichtig to a 4-0 victory over No. 4 seed Pitt-Bradford in the final game of opening-day play at the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Camden Regional here May 11. High School Softball: Tuesday, May 9, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty With so much focus on qualifying for the upcoming softball tournament, there's a tendency to forget about winning the conference or division title. Triton needed every win during the regular season in order to keep pace with or move ahead of Shawnee in the Olympic Conference Patriot Division. The Mustangs' victory over the Shawnee yesterday plus their 11-1 win over West Deptford has pushed them on top of the race. For West Deptford, the loss has put them in the position of winning their next two games in order to qualify them for the post season. |
High School Softball: Tuesday, May 2, 2006 By Susan Hall There are several teams looking ahead on their schedule trying to find out how many games they need to win in order to qualify for the upcoming tournament. The Lady Tartans from Highland was one of those teams as every game is a necessary win in order to finish with a five hundred percentage record or better by next Friday. West Deptford would take their two game winning streak to Highland which included winning four of their last five games. The Tartans put all of their opponent's recent success behind them and went on to defeat West Deptford 8-5 in a non-league softball game. |
College Softball: Tuesday, May 2, 2006 By Mike Ballard Senior All-American Michelle Schlichtig hurled a one-hit shutout and Rutgers University-Camden set new program records for most wins in a season and most consecutive wins as the Lady Raptors defeated The College of New Jersey, 6-0, in the opening round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference Softball Championship here May 2. With the victory, the top-seeded Raptors improve to 37-4, passing the old school mark of 36 wins set in 2004. They also have won 27 consecutive games, one more than the mark set last season. TCNJ, the sixth seed, falls to 25-16. |
High School Softball: Monday, May 1, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty Here we go again! Another year has past and teams are enjoying the spring time weather we were having but an important date would trump any enjoyment of sunny skies. The cutoff date to qualify for the postseason tournament was less than two weeks away. Pitman, one of the teams hovering around the qualifying win/loss ratio, had to find a way of scoring against freshman pitcher Taylor Chain and the Lady Lions from Gloucester. The Lions' offense would provide enough run support early on and Gloucester would continue to remain amongst the leaders of the Tri-County Conference Classic Division with their 7-1 over Pitman. |
High School Softball: Friday, April 28, 2006 By Susan Hall There's always that one team others have to chase in the standings and when that opportunity arrives to compete against top team, try not to waste the opportunity. The Green Wave from Audubon had the honor of representing the Colonial Conference as the first place team but not far behind them were the undefeated Silver Knights from Sterling. The Knights would be looking to pick up their eleventh win in a row and were looking to win their second game of the regular season against Audubon. Sterling would make up an early deficit and defeat Audubon by a 4-2 margin. Steph Kroski picked up the win for the Knights limiting Audubon's scoring chances during the late innings. |
High School Softball: Thursday, April 27, 2006 By Stephanie Wright With the month of May only a few days away, for many teams the threat of showers have been a distant thought as rain has mostly avoid our area and allowing outdoor events free of being rescheduled or cancel. For the Lady Lancers from Holy Cross, they would be happy to pick up another win when they traveled to Bishop Eustace looking to put together a win streak under these sunny skies. With an early three run lead over the home team, Holy Cross watched their advantage dwindle down to a single run. The Lancers would rally during the late innings and defeat the Crusaders 6-2 in a non-league game. |
College Softball: Thursday, April 27, 2006 By Mike Ballard Senior Michelle Schlichtig hurled a two-hit shutout and slammed a solo home run to tie the school career RBI record in the opening game, and she earned the win in relief in the nightcap when junior shortstop Alaina Giles drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Rutgers University-Camden softball team swept Hunter College, 6-0 and 1-0, in a non-conference doubleheader here April 27. The sweep lifts the Lady Raptors, ranked No. 4 nationally, to 34-4 overall and extends their winning streak to 24 games. Hunter College falls to 17-15. |
High School Softball: Tuesday, April 25, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty For six complete innings, starting pitcher Susan Jackman relied on her pitching, team defense and Seneca's offense in order to keep the Lady Eagles from Paul VI from scoring any runs. Lately, the Eagles have gained the reputation of never giving up in a game and making every game a close one. Seneca would slowly build a four run lead heading into the top of the seventh inning. Adding one more run and now with a five run lead, Seneca would watch Paul VI rally back scoring four runs. That insurance run during the top half of the seventh inning proved to be the difference as Seneca would go on and pick up their 5-4 victory. |
College Softball: Monday, April 24, 2006 By Mike Ballard Junior right fielder Autumn Millett went 6-for-12 (.500) with six runs, nine RBIs and three home runs in a pair of doubleheader sweeps last week. In a sweep over Richard Stockton April 18, she went 3-for-5 with seven RBIs and a home run in each game. She followed that with a 3-for-7 day in a sweep at Neumann College April 19, including a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning of the opening game, snapping a 1-1 tie and giving Rutgers-Camden a 3-1 win. That home run was the 19th of her career, tying the program record set by Becky Johnson from 2002-05. |
High School Softball: Friday, April 21, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty The Tri-County Conference Classic Division had two teams that were undefeated so far and one of those teams were the Lady Eagles from Pennsville. Woodstown would be the other team in first place ahead of Pennsville, Schalick and the Lady Lions from Gloucester. After having their five game winning streak snapped, the Lions would host the undefeated Eagles in search of rebounding from a tough loss earlier in the week. Gloucester would overcome an early deficit in a big way by scoring nine unanswered runs against the Eagles over four innings. When the final out was recorded by starting pitcher Sam Dobleman, the Lions would be on the winning side of a 10-6 victory. |
High School Softball: Wednesday, April 19, 2006 By Susan Hall For seven full innings, this game just could not be decided as neither team was able to score. Starting pitchers Alyssa O'Connell for Camden Catholic and Jamie Minix for Kingsway were able to rely on their defenses helping them preserve the scoreless tie after regulation. The Lady Dragons appeared to take advantage of a situation that resulted in two runs during the eighth inning, but Camden Catholic would respond to extend this game even further into extra innings. Finally with a runner in scoring position during the bottom of the tenth inning, Shannon Morlock single scored the deciding run to defeat Kingsway by a 3-2 margin. |
High School Softball: Tuesday, April 18, 2006 By Susan Hall Even before the first pitch was thrown by the opposing team, the coaching staff had already gone over which player or players have the potential of making a big difference in a game. So when a player surprisingly comes through with a big hit, add another player on the must watched list. Whether it really was a big surprise to the other players on Seneca's softball team, Kim Narkiewicz crushed two home runs to dead center field highlighting the Golden Eagles 7-2 win at Cherry Hill West. |
High School Softball: Monday, April 17, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty The Olympic Conference is loaded with talented players all trying to accomplish their individual goals for their team. No one team has totally run away from the rest in their division leaving the door wide open for each and every team to make some sort of movement toward the top. When starting pitcher Alex Rocco got the call for Bishop Eustace, her goal would be to keep visiting Pennsauken from getting batters on base as much as possible limiting any major rallies. The Crusaders' defense were able to provide plenty of support for Rocco as Bishop Eustace posted a 5-1 victory in an inter-division match up. |
College Softball: Monday, April 17, 2006 By Mike Ballard Sophomore first baseman Kathleen Dreitlein powered the No. 8-ranked Rutgers-Camden softball team to four straight New Jersey Athletic Conference victories this week, extending the Lady Raptors’ winning streak to 14 games. Dreitlein went 8-for-13 (.615) with four runs, four doubles, six RBIs and one walk in the four games to extend her hitting streak to seven games. She went 3-for-6 in a twinbill sweep of No. 2-ranked Rowan April 11, then 5-for-7 at Ramapo April 15. Included in her big week was a 3-for-4 Game Two against Ramapo, including a two-run double to spark the Raptors’ winning four-run sixth-inning rally. Overall on the season, Dreitlein is batting .455 with 22 runs, 19 RBIs and a team-leading 12 doubles. |
High School Softball: Wednesday, April 12, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty Two teams having two different stretch of games met on the softball field at Haddonfield High School. It has been a rough beginning for the softball team from Haddon Township who were looking to end a string of tough losses. In their seventh consecutive Colonial Conference game, the Lady Hawks were looking to get back on the winning side of a game after starting the season with four straight victories. Haddonfield also have had some recently competitive games and their match up against the Hawks would be another game that both teams looked to have the advantage. Haddonfield's second inning success allowed them to take a lead and hold onto the 2-1 victory. |
High School Softball: Tuesday, April 11, 2006 By Susan Hall When you think of the game of softball, most of the time the first thought that comes to mind is the pitcher and how much velocity the ball sails across the plate and into the catcher's glove. What is sometimes forgotten is that when the bat does come in contact with that pitch, the ball will be put in play and the defense must be ready at all times. Starting pitcher Allison Jordan for the Renegades from Shawnee would get plenty of support from the other nine players taking up positions on the field when they traveled to Triton in search of their second consecutive win. In a pitcher's duel, Shawnee would pick up the only run they needed in the first inning and held off Triton by a 3-0 margin in an Olympic Conference Patriot Division game. |
High School Softball: Friday, April 7, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty It all begins with the pitcher on the mound at least concentrating on getting the ball over the plate with some velocity for a strike. When that confidence begins to build up, the pitcher begins to add a bit more arm swing behind the pitch. Heather Morgan for the Green Wave from Audubon was able to strike out ten batters against Haddon Heights this afternoon. With Morgan's success on the mound, the offense would provide an early three run lead that the Lady Garnets were unable to overcome. The Wave would post a 7-2 victory in conference play. |
High School Softball: Thursday, April 6, 2006 By Susan Hall Every season, there are always several teams that start off the season on a winning note that surprises a few people. One of those teams getting noticed early would be the Thundering Herd from Woodbury. Freshman pitcher Liz Carter has helped Woodbury's softball team begin the season win their first three games of the season and she has done so not just with her pitching. Before today's game against Gateway, the freshman hurler picked up the win as the starting pitcher and recorded a home run in each of those games. Against the Gators, Carter would not record her third home run of the season, but she would be on the winning side of a 14-0 victory. Woodbury has improved to 3-0 on the season. |
High School Softball: Wednesday, April 5, 2006 By Susan Hall The Lady Rams from Gloucester Catholic has started out the season with two exciting games against very good teams. Starting pitcher Brittney Carosia had to battle Nicole Ayres and the Deptford Spartans on Monday and today's game was against Amanda Branco and the Highland Tartans. A dramatic come from behind victory during the bottom of the seventh inning against Deptford gave the Rams the opening day victory. This time, Gloucester Catholic would give Carosia a two run lead early and the Rams would pick up the 3-1 victory in a Tri-County Conference Royal Division softball game. |
High School Softball: Tuesday, April 4, 2006 By Susan Hall It's always nice to get that first win of the season and both Lindenwold and Cherry Hill West were looking for during their second game of the season. Shaina Bradley would get the start on the mound for the Lady Lions from Cherry Hill West and she would get plenty of support. Kelly Smith would give Bradley an early lead when she hit her homerun early in the non-league softball game. The Lions would score all of their runs they would need during the first three innings. Cherry Hill West would pick up the 14-1 victory and even their record to keep pace in the Olympic Conference Patriot Division. |
College Softball: Monday, April 3, 2006 By Mike Ballard Michelle Schlichtig captures her second Raptor of the Week honor in three weeks after posting a 2-0 record and one save in three pitching performances last week. Schlichtig started with a five-inning no-hitter against John Jay College of Criminal Justice, recording all 15 outs on strikes for her fifth career no-hitter at Rutgers-Camden. Combined with her previous outing, a perfect game against Keystone March 25, it extended her no-hit streak to 10-1/3 consecutive innings. She extended that string to 14 innings before settling for a three-hitter in a 3-1 victory April 1 over defending New Jersey Athletic Conference champion William Paterson University. Schlichtig came back to save the nightcap of a 3-2 win over Paterson, adding a solo home run in that game. |
College Softball: Monday, March 27, 2006 By Mike Ballard In the only doubleheader of the week for the Rutgers-Camden softball team, freshman Mandi Moore led an offensive assault during a 14-0, 18-0 sweep over Keystone College March 25. Moore, who played both left field and shortstop in the twinbill, went 2-for-3 with one run and one double in each game. She had three RBIs in the opening game and five RBIs in the nightcap, including the first three of the game on a first-inning home run, the first round-tripper of her college career.
