High School Softball: Thursday, June 2, 2005 By Stephanie Wright Lisa Sweeney’s softball career so far has been extremely impressive. If there was a scouting report to study on how to defeat the Red Devils, it all starts with scoring runs against Rancocas Valley’s senior pitcher. Third seeded Jackson was visiting the top seeded Red Devils looking for a way to defeat Rancocas Valley and pick up the Central Jersey Group 4 title. But for the entire season, Rancocas Valley knew that they didn’t need to score many runs to decide the outcome of the game. Kerstin Briggs delivered the key hit during the fourth inning scoring the only two runs needed for Rancocas Valley to pick up the title over Jackson. |
High School Softball: Thursday, June 2, 2005 By Susan Hall It is not unusual to watch a softball game and the two teams could not come away with the victory after seven full innings. When that happens, most of the attention is focused on the opposing pitchers on the mound. For the Green Wave from Audubon, Kiersten Hughes has been spectacular on the mound and her counterpart Jess Goeller for Buena came up big extending this game into extra innings. With several attempts to win this game, Audubon’s efforts were finally paid off during the bottom of the thirteenth inning. The Green Wave had the game winning run on third base and Stephanie Taraschi delivered the biggest hit of the game giving Audubon not only the 1-0 victory, but also the South Jersey Group 2 title. |
High School Softball: Thursday, June 2, 2005 By Crystal Parker It was considered the upset of this year's group tournament. The eighth seeded Lady Lions from Lindenwold were up against considerable odds when they played Pennsville in the quarterfinals of the South Jersey Group 1 tournament. By scoring early runs, the Lions were able to hold off the number one seed to advance to the next round. This time traveling to Gloucester, Lindenwold used a different approach by rallying in the seventh inning to take a one run lead. The fourth seeded Lions from Gloucester responded in dramatic fashion by scoring two runs during the bottom of the inning with two outs to advance to the finals when Sam Dobleman nailed the game winning single for Gloucester. With that clutch hitting, Gloucester would win this game by a 4-3 margin. |

High School Softball: Monday, May 16, 2005 By Stephanie Wright Rancocas Valley had very aspect of their game working for them when they traveled to Camden Catholic to take on the Lady Irish. By now most of everyone has heard the name Lisa Sweeney and her impressive years as the Red Devils’ starting pitcher. Today would be another game for the record books for Rancocas Valley as they would score early and often scoring more than enough runs for Sweeney. Dana Bieniek led the hit attack against the Irish collecting four hits and the Red Devils added two homeruns to defeat Camden Catholic 8-0 in a non-league competition. |
High School Softball: Friday, May 13, 2005 By Susan Hall For quite some time now, Audubon has been successful at defeating every opponent from the Colonial Conference. Their success even goes back several years as they have been the softball team on top of the conference at the end of the regular season. Sterling who was right behind them in the standings was looking to avenge their one run loss earlier in the season and came pretty close to achieving their goal. It would the defending champs snapping a scoreless tie through five innings by scoring all of their runs during the last two innings. Audubon would pick up their seventh victory of the season with a 6-0 victory. |
High School Softball: Wednesday, May 11, 2005 By Susan Hall Paul VI, Bishop Eustace and Camden Catholic have made the race for the Olympic Conference National Division title very interesting. Each of these teams has separated themselves from the rest of the pack as two of the teams are chasing the Irish from Camden Catholic in the standings. Well it was a chance for Paul VI and Bishop Eustace to battle it out on the softball field and this low scoring game would be decided by a single run and in extra innings. Bishop Eustace would score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning off the bat of Stefany Graham’s sacrifice bunt with Kelly Blake charging home with the 2-1 victory and a trip to the playoffs. |
High School Softball: Tuesday, May 10, 2005 By Susan Hall Two teams that were right in the middle of the standings making a push towards the playoffs were the Lady Pioneers from Clearview and the visiting Lady Rams from Gloucester Catholic. Clearview had won the first meeting between these two teams representing the Tri-County League Royal Division and needed to repeat their performance in order to pick up the all important win. Clearview would hold a brief one run lead heading into the middle innings only to see Gloucester Catholic rally during the third and fourth innings. Those runs were just enough for Brittany Carosina to pick up the win by defeating Clearview by an 8-6 margin. |
College Softball: Monday, May 9, 2005 By Mike Ballard Just when the Rutgers-Camden and William Paterson softball teams thought they were done with each other for the season, they both received word that they will be appearing in the same NCAA Softball Championship regional a five-team event which will be held at William Paterson University beginning May 13. That word came May 9, just two days after the longest game in the history of both programs, when the Pioneers edged the Lady Raptors, 1-0, in the bottom of the 15th inning to capture the New Jersey Athletic Conference championship. William Paterson sophomore third baseman Nicky Arias dove into first base to beat the play on an infield error as sophomore center fielder Brandi Kavaliauskas scored the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 15th inning. |
High School Softball: Thursday, May 5, 2005 By Susan Hall This was that time of the year were teams were focusing a bit more on making every play in the field or concentrating harder on connecting the bat with the ball. In a non-league game played at Haddon Heights, Pitman was that visiting team looking to keep their playoff hopes alive. Starting pitcher Erin Murphy was on the mound for the Lady Garnets trying to extend the teams winning streak to two games. Caitlin McDevitt would be one of the reasons Haddon Heights defeat Pitman by a 4-0 score. McDevitt had two hits and two runs batted in with one of them scored on a solo home run. |
High School Softball: Wednesday, May 4, 2005 By Joyce Sagerty The news spread quickly about Camden Catholic losing their first game of the season. For Paul VI, it was good news as they were chasing the Irish in the standings and picking up a division win moves them one step closer to the top. The Lady Eagles would start off this game with an early lead only to see it disappear in the third inning. Paul VI continued to come through with the big hits especially from the bat of Megan Bryson who had two triples and a double in the game. A three run sixth inning by the Eagles broke open a tied ball game giving Stephanie Ricciardi the run support she needed. With the 7-3 decision over Camden Catholic, Paul VI got back on the winning side of a game by defeating the Olympic Conference National Division leaders. |
High School Softball: Wednesday, May 4, 2005 By Susan Hall So far this season, Overbrook has been doing everything they need to do in order to stay ahead of the rest of the teams from the Tri-County Conference Royal Division. Their success on the softball field has rewarded the Lady Rams with winning eight straight games which included a win on Monday over the determined Pioneers from Clearview. Competing in their four straight divisional game, the Rams’ Kerri Procida would watch the defense come up with some spectacular plays both in the infield and outfield not only keeping Highland off the scoreboard, but also preserving a no hitter. Overbrook would extend their winning streak with their 5-0 victory at home. |
High School Softball: Tuesday, May 3, 2005 By Susan Hall When two good softball teams meet on the field knowing that the opposing pitchers have the capability of striking out everyone that stands up at the plate, each player must take advantage of every situation that’s presented in order to score runs. The starting pitchers, Jamie Moir for Lenape and Alyssa O’Connell for Camden Catholic, are considered two of the best pitchers in South Jersey. Only one hit was surrendered in this Olympic Conference game which meant that someone pitched a no hitter. O’Connell would not give up a single hit, but did not win the game for Camden Catholic. Lenape would score the only run of the game on a fielder’s choice during the first inning. Moir would take over for the rest of the game striking out fifteen batters to pick up the 1-0 decision. |
College Softball: Monday, May 2, 2005 By Mike Ballard The Lady Raptors softball team continued setting standards for excellence in Rutgers-Camden athletics with a pair of new accomplishments last week. On April 26, the Raptors split a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader at The College of New Jersey and became the first team in school history to clinch a regular-season NJAC championship. They will host the NJAC playoffs beginning May 5. A year ago the softball team became one of only two programs to win the NJAC championship through the playoffs, joining the 2003 women’s basketball team. |
High School Softball: Wednesday, April 27, 2005 By Susan Hall As we approach the month of May, teams are beginning to identify themselves as being labeled as having a chance at the title. Two of those teams amongst the top of the Colonial Conference were the Silver Knights from Sterling and the Garnets from Haddon Heights. Sterling’s starting pitcher Paige Cauley helped her own cause by belting a two run homerun in the first inning only to see Haddon Heights tie this game two innings later. It took a four run inning to finally put this game away for Sterling as they defeated Haddon Heights by a 6-2 margin. |
High School Softball: Monday, April 25, 2005 By Susan Hall So far this season, it seems to be the Audubon softball team is that has found several different ways to win a game. The Green Wave started out their season by winning the first eight games on their schedule and during that time, Audubon has won with both pitching and by their bats. After suffering their only loss of the season to Hammonton, Audubon was looking to pick up their fourth win in a row against Gateway. Kiersten Hughes was the starting pitcher that kept the Gators off the scoreboard and watched Audubon’s offense scored all of their runs during the second inning. From that point on, the defense took care of things on the field and Audubon would cruise to the 8-0 victory. |
College Softball: Monday, April 25, 2005 By Mike Ballard
Sophomore catcher Mo Baney had a huge day to spark a doubleheader sweep over Rowan in the Lady Raptors’ lone softball action of the week. Baney, who is hitting .407 on the season, went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in each game. In the opener, her two-run home run in the sixth inning tied the score at 2-2 in an eventual 3-2 Rutgers-Camden win. In the nightcap, she had the eventual game-winning RBI with a first-inning single in a 4-0 victory for the Raptors, 29-1 and ranked No. 5 in the nation. |
South Jersey Softball: Sunday, April 24, 2005 By Coach Kelly The DDE Dragons of Berlin Twp. Middle school started off the 2005 Softball season with victories over Berlin Borough (13-5) and Carusi (21-6). Michelle Foster (7th grade), earned both victories and also was an asset with her bat. Other major contributors with the bat were returning players, Kelsey Greager (8th), Jenney Sadin (8th), and Melanie Dotts (8th). Leading the team in hits is Melissa Swain (6th). Defensively Kim McKelvey (8th) has controlled the outfield. This has been the best season start for the Lady Dragons. They have 4 upcoming home games at Luke Ave. Sports Complex. |
High School Softball: Wednesday, April 20, 2005 By Susan Hall It's not uncommon to see a starting pitcher complete one game and then find that same pitcher staying on the mound to pitch yet another game on the same day. This past weekend in the Overbrook tournament, Nicole Ayres pitched twice and picked up two completed game wins for the Lady Spartans from Deptford against Pennsville and Eastern and she was not done. Starting in a Tri-County Conference Royal Division match-up against Cumberland, Ayres pitched recorded twelve strikeouts and Jackie Brown collected four hits helping the Spartans to a 17-0 win over the Colts. |
College Softball: Monday, April 18, 2005 By Mike Ballard The beat goes on for the Rutgers-Camden softball team, and the nation is taking notice. While the Lady Raptors were winning two more doubleheaders during the week, stretching their winning streak to 24 games, they rose to No. 5 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Top 25 poll, making them the first Top 5 team in school history. They had been ranked No. 7 in the previous bi-weekly poll after earning a No. 16 ranking in the pre-season poll. |
High School Softball: Friday, April 15, 2005 By Susan Hall Depending on which side field you are sitting on, it’s always nice to have one of those games were everything goes your way. Knowing that no team or game is an easy win, Sterling would have their way against Gateway in a Colonial Conference competition. Starting pitcher Paige Cauley delivered a one hitter for the Lady Knights and also came up big at the plate as well. A four run first inning was more than enough to win this game, but a five run fourth put this game away early for Sterling and cruised to a 12-0 victory. |
High School Softball: Thursday, April 14, 2005 By Crystal Parker While most of us were facing that tax deadline that seems to come out of nowhere, the same could be said about Northern Burlington’s luck with Rancocas Valley. Lisa Sweeney has been un-hittable for quite some time when facing the Greyhounds. Every scheduled game is marked on the calendar knowing that the Red Devils was that team to beat. This year was different as this extra inning softball game was decided by Lyndsay Mouse’s home run in the bottom of the tenth inning. With a runner on base, the dramatic ending of a 3-1 victory for Northern Burlington saw the softball sail over the left center fence. |
High School Softball: Wednesday, April 13, 2005 By Susan Hall Picking up the first win of the season gives a team a feeling of confidence. Getting that first divisional win obviously helps in the quest of becoming the top team in that division. For Seneca traveling to Bishop Eustace, both of these teams were looking for that first divisional victory. The Lady Crusaders were taking advantage of the situations put in front of them and scored twice in the first inning to jump out to an early lead. Four more runs scored in the second inning was more than enough for Bishop Eustace to pick up their first win of the season. Hannah Adams success at the plate contributed to the Crusaders’ 7-2 victory at home. |
High School Softball: Monday, April 11, 2005 By Crystal Parker When the Lady Chiefs from Cherokee took the field against Lenape in an Olympic Conference American Division softball game, it was a strange site to see their previous coach standing on the opposite side of the field. Mike Medrick, who had coached Cherokee to a 28-0 record and a couple of titles two years ago, was now the head coach for Lenape. But in this game, the players are the ones on the field working hard at coming away with the victory. Lenape would tie this game in the eighth inning to extend the game even further and then win it in the bottom the tenth when Jamie Moir’s single drove in her sister Kelsey for the winning run and a 4-3 victory. |
High School Softball: Thursday, April 7, 2005 By Susan Hall New Egypt and Florence were very familiar with each other’s softball program as they could be found at the top of the Burlington County Freedom division. Both teams advanced to the group title game last year with the Lady Warriors from New Egypt winning the championship. At the start of another run at the title, Florence did not let a quick start by the Warriors bother them as they battled back from a three run deficit. But a classic battle between Florence’s Melissa Mehrer and Shannon Houston proved to be the difference for New Egypt. A single up the middle by Houston brought home the winning run to claim the 5-4 extra inning victory. |
High School Softball: Wednesday, April 6, 2005 By Susan Hall Each season there's always high hopes on improving your softball program to do better than the previous years whether or not a state championship was captured. For Haddon Heights, starting out the season on the winning side of the scoreboard is familiar. It's maintaining that winning attitude is a bit harder to do especially in the Colonial Conference. After defeating Haddonfield and Lindenwold, the Lady Garnets were facing their third opponent from their conference in Haddon Township. Starting pitcher Kathy Transue picked up the victory for Haddon Heights when the offense’s five run third inning was more than enough to post the 7-1 victory. |
High School Softball: Friday, April 1, 2005 By Joyce Sagerty It was a day primed for misconceptions and tricks with the traditional occurrences that could happen on the first day of April. But this was no joke being played as the beginning of a new softball season was able to avoid those showers and play the first game of the season without any delay. The Lady Eagles from Paul VI were ready to defend their Olympic Conference National Division title and it would start with their divisional game against Bishop Eustace. Trailing by two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Paul VI rallied for four runs which included a two run homerun by Megan Bryson. Paul VI would go on to defeat Bishop Eustace by a score of 6-4. |
College Softball: Monday, March 28, 2005 By Mike Ballard The way the Rutgers-Camden softball team is playing these days, the weather may be the only thing that can stop the Lady Raptors’ success. Rutgers-Camden, which has won 10 straight games to improve to 13-1, saw its only scheduled games of the week postponed as a doubleheader against McDaniel College was rained out. It has been rescheduled for Thursday at 5:30 p.m. |
College Softball: Monday, March 20, 2005 By Mike Ballard Junior Michelle Schlichtig turned in a phenomenal week during the Lady Raptors’ 8-0 softball trip to Florida last week, going 6-0 with one save and a no-hitter on the mound and batting .500 with a 1.154 slugging percentage and 17 RBIs. She allowed only 18 hits and four runs (three earned) in 37-2/3 innings, walking 10 and striking out 51. She had three doubles, a triple and four home runs, and capped her week with a no-hitter against Molloy March 18, walking three and striking out 12. |
College Softball: Monday, March 14, 2005 By Mike Ballard The Rutgers-Camden softball team entered the season ranked No. 16 nationally, and the Lady Raptors lived up to their billing with a torrid 5-1 start during the first week of the season. Rutgers-Camden swept Neumann College, 3-0 and 12-1, at home on March 7, then won three of its four games against solid competition in the Sea Gull Classic at Salisbury University March 11-12. The Raptors defeated Lynchburg College, 9-0, and lost to York, 4-2, on March 11, then posted a double-shutout sweep over Christopher Newport University (7-0) and Manhattanville College (10-0) March 12. |
