The Moorestown Lady Quakers played host to the Shawnee Lady Renegades at the neutral field of Cherry Hill West on Saturday, where Shawnee took home the trophy, winning the New Jersey State Girls Lacrosse Championship. In their previous regular season match-up, Shawnee had defeated Moorestown 7-5, handing the Lady Quakers their only regular season loss.

High School Boys Lacrosse: Wednesday, May 27, 1998

That's Right! Boy's lacrosse in South Jersey was played in Moorestown. It was a state tournament game against St. Joseph, Metuchen. Usually lacrosse is mentioned as a high school girl's sport in this area. But this sport for boys is a more physical style of play with a lot of contact and the Quakers were letting South Jersey know they exist. Most of the time, Moorestown is taking that long trip north to participate in regular season games. Not this time. By defeating the North Jersey Sparta 18-7 on Friday, they had the privilege of playing at home.

The third-seeded Cherokee Chiefs visited the second-seeded Moorestown Quakers to fight for the right to go to the state girls lacrosse championship. Last year, the Lady Chiefs upset the Lady Quakers and knocked them out of the playoffs, so the Moorestown team was determined not to let Cherokee do it to them again.

In quarterfinal playoff action, 13th-seeded Delran visited 5th-seeded Shawnee, looking for another upset win after defeating 4th-seeded Pingry 17-13 on the road. The Lady Renegades had previously defeated the Lady Bears 7-5 in their hard fought regular season game. Defense would again be the name of the game as the Lady Renegades shut down Delran's attack.

In first round playoff action, Cherry Hill East visited Shawnee, still smarting after their 22-7 loss to the Lady Renegades in regular season play back on April 14th. Both teams had defeated North Jersey teams in Saturday's playoff games, East defeating Red Bank Catholic 13-12 and Shawnee defeating Kent Place 21-0.

High School Lacrosse: Wednesday, May 6, 1998
By Gary Steiner The Moorestown Lady Quakers visited the Delran Lady Bears to play a game under the lights. This was Moorestown's only night game of the season, so it would be interesting to see if Delran could take advantage of the experience. Both teams were looking to improve their playoff seeding with a win, as pairings would be based on all games played as of May 6th.
Dusk had not quite fallen, so the effect of the lights would not be felt right away. The game started out slow, with each team turning the ball over several times. Moorestown opened the scoring with a goal by Colleen Connors, quickly followed with a score by Kate Slotman. Delran's lead scorer Lauren Simone finally scored for Delran about midway through the first half. Moorestown's Andrea Collesidis followed a minute later with her first goal. Michi Matter pulled Delran back to within one when she scored from a free position.

The Cherokee Lady Chiefs for the first time ever defeated the Shawnee Lady Renegades in lacrosse. The win keeps Cherokee tied with Shawnee and Moorestown as the teams with the best record in the Olympic Conference, all three having just one loss. The win also snapped a 33 game undefeated streak by Shawnee.

The name of the game was defense, as Shawnee and Moorestown fought it out in a meeting of the two remaining undefeated teams in the Olympic Conference. This game most likely would set the tone for the playoffs, where there is a good chance they will meet again.

The Cherokee Chiefs and the Moorestown Quakers came together for a meeting of two undefeated teams. Cherokee had been picked by many preseason polls to be number one in South Jersey, so Moorestown had something to prove. The Quakers also remembered how the Chiefs knocked them out of the playoffs last year.

Cherokee came to Cherry Hill East for their second game after a hard fought win against Delran. The Lady Chiefs were predicted by many in the pre-season to be the best in South Jersey, so it would be interesting to see how they faired against the Lady Cougars, a team that statistically they should beat.
