High School Lacrosse (Playoffs): Tuesday, May 19, 1998
By Gary Steiner In first round playoff action, Cherry Hill East visited Shawnee, still smarting after their 22-7 loss to the Lady Renegades in regular season play back on April 14th. Both teams had defeated North Jersey teams in Saturday's playoff games, East defeating Red Bank Catholic 13-12 and Shawnee defeating Kent Place 21-0. The Lady Cougars started out fast and aggressive, scoring the first goal on Christy Madden's free position shot. This seemed to shock the Lady Renegades awake, as they picked up their pace and responded with five unanswered goals by Kate Gilland (2), Lori Whitfield, Julie Branin and Jackie Angermaier. East finally scored their second goal with a shot by Carolyn Snyder just before the half ended. In the second half, the Lady Cougars started off with a goal by Kristy Gallagher. But again, Shawnee rumbled back with four straight goals by Dana Griffith, Julie Branin, Julianne Peck and Jackie Angermaier. Kristy Gallagher would score her second goal for East, this one from a free position, but the momentum was clearly all in Shawnee's favor. Shawnee's Kristin Abbruzesse would score her only goal of the game late in the second half. East would follow with two scores, one from Carolyn Snyder and the other from Nancy Dwyer. But it was too little too late. Julianne Peck would score a final goal for Shawnee, to take the Lady Renegades to the next round of the playoffs with a final score of 11-6.
