Rams Rally on Umba's Homerun

Wednesday, April 11, 2007

By Clark Washington
SJSports Special Correspondent

It's a situation that most baseball players put themselves in and that is to come up to the plate with a chance to win the game for your team. When the Red Devils from Penns Grove held a one run lead at the start of the bottom of the sixth inning, Gloucester Catholic would get two runners on base with Matt Umba looking to pick up another key hit to drive in another run. This time, Umba nailed a three run homerun for the Rams to re-take the lead. Gloucester Catholic would give up a run during the seventh inning but they would come away with a 5-4 victory and pick up their third win of the season.

The Lady Irish would gain the early momentum in this game, but a close play at home quickly swung this game in favor of the visiting team. A key hit by Shauna Vennell provided only run of the game for Gloucester Catholic and the Lady Rams would pick up the 1-0 victory in a non-league game.

By Vincent Lewis

It was a game that appeared to be in the grasp of their opponent. For most of this South Jersey Non-Public B semifinals game played in Brooklawn, the Rams from Gloucester Catholic clearly had the momentum and a five run lead over Bishop Eustace with two more innings remaining. The Rams, who were the second seed in the bracket, scored in four of the first five innings demonstrating their ability to produce runs. Third seeded Bishop Eustace's momentum slowly increased and rallied for five runs, which included Dewey Oriente's three run triple, during their last two at bats to send this game into extra innings. Relief pitcher Andrew Del Rossi continued to keep the Rams off the scoreboard giving the Crusaders a chance to win this semifinals game. Mike Plakis' solo home run during the ninth proved to be the game winner and Bishop Eustace advanced to the finals with a 13-10 win.

Strong Pitching From Blackburn as Rams Win in Extra Innings

Wednesday, May 24, 2006

By Jerome Michaels

If it wasn't for that uncharacteristic loss during the Diamond Classic, Gloucester Catholic wouldn't have to prove themselves again that they were the same team that won some many games. In the South Jersey Non-Public B bracket, the second seeded Rams were hosting Mater Dei who was the seventh seed. In a pitcher's duel that advanced to extra innings, starting pitcher Matt Blackburn knew he had to continue pitching well after giving up late in the game. Still on the mound after keeping Mater Dei off the scoreboard during their top half of the eighth inning, Gloucester Catholic was able to score the winning run off of an error. The Rams 3-2 victory now advances them to the semi-finals.

Gloucester Catholic Advances to the Finals

Thursday, November 10, 2005

By Susan Hall

When the post season begins and the seeding are announced, the players from participating teams can't help but notice where they are and if they are in the same bracket as the number one seeded team. But when you are the number one team, the focus switches to defending that status as opposing teams are emotionally looking to remove that ranking by ending their season. The Lady Rams from Gloucester Catholic were the number one seeded team from the South Jersey Non-Public Group B tournament hosting St. Rose in the finals. In a defensive battle, it only took one goal to win this game and Jennie Vartebedian would come up with the lone goal for Gloucester Catholic. The Rams will now travel to the College of New Jersey to a state final game against Villa Walsh.

The South B bracket of the Central Jersey Group I boy’s soccer tournament definitely proves that on any given day, a true upset can happen. Bishop Eustace has proven all season long that they are a group that play well together as a single unit and win. Gloucester Catholic had put together a season winning those games they needed to qualify for the tournament. The Rams’ effort early on rewarded them with a one goal lead that they were able to hold off the Crusaders relentless efforts to tie this game. Two halves of keeper T.J. Deptford Finds a Way to Protect Home Field

Saturday, October 22, 2005

By Jerome Michaels
SJSports Special Correspondent

The way this game started out, it looked as if the Spartans from Deptford would be victims of Gloucester Catholic’s controlled running game. The Rams held onto the football during the game’s opening drive for just about all of the first quarter. Deptford’s bend don’t break defense would be able to dig their cleats deep into the mud and prevent the Rams from scoring on that drive. Both teams would score second quarter touchdowns, but it wasn’t until the second half that halfback Ryan Leafey scored his second and third rushing touchdowns of the game and pull away from Gloucester Catholic. Deptford would pick up their fifth victory of the season with their 28-13 victory over the Rams.

The Braves Get Running Game to Work

Saturday, September 17, 2005

By Jerome Michaels
SJSports Special Correspondent

There's always that debate amongst fans about which part of a football team really decides the outcome of a game. Sure the quarterback gets most of the credit handing the ball to the runningbacks or passing it to a receiver. Then there's the discussion about the defense and their ability to stop the opposing offense. So when Williamstown traveled to Gloucester to take on the Rams from Gloucester Catholic, it was those guys in the trenches that really made the difference in this game. The offensive line for the Braves allowed Tyrone Pouncy and Mark Masterson to rush for two touchdowns against Gloucester Catholic. The defense allowed only one first half touchdown and Williamstown picked up the victory by a 26-8 margin for an opening day win.

Action Packed Second Half Finds Highland on Top

Saturday, September 10, 2005

By Vincent Lewis

High school football had finally begun giving everyone another avenue of taking their mind off of the ridiculous gasoline prices that have hit our country. Enjoying, ironically, beautiful sunshine and pleasant temperatures, the Highland Tartans were hosting the Rams from Gloucester Catholic in a Tri-County Conference Royal Division game. Both teams would score rushing touchdowns in a penalty filled opening quarter, but began to execute textbook football the rest of the way. Highland would bounce back from a four point deficit and win this game in the fourth quarter by a 42-32 score.

Two teams that were right in the middle of the standings making a push towards the playoffs were the Lady Pioneers from Clearview and the visiting Lady Rams from Gloucester Catholic. Clearview had won the first meeting between these two teams representing the Tri-County League Royal Division and needed to repeat their performance in order to pick up the all important win. Clearview would hold a brief one run lead heading into the middle innings only to see Gloucester Catholic rally during the third and fourth innings. Second Half the Difference for Gloucester Catholic

Thursday, November 25, 2004

By Jason Brown
SJSports Special Correspondent

It's always special when these two teams meet on the field, but it was something else that brought these two football teams from Gloucester together on Thanksgiving Day. The game was being played in honor of Marine Corporal Marc Ryan who was killed in action in Iraq. The former Gloucester player had his number 19 placed on the field for all to salute at the beginning of the game. When the opening whistle was blown to start this game, Gloucester Catholic broke open a close game during the third quarter and never looked back. The Rams from Gloucester Catholic cruised to a 40-14 victory.
