Baseball Spotlight: Wednesday, November 5, 2003 By Larry Shenk An extensive fine arts program commissioned by the Phillies and designed to honor the City of Philadelphia and its rich baseball tradition was approved today by the Philadelphia Art Commission. Under the program, the Phillies have commissioned a diversity of local artists utilizing various media, styles and artistic approaches to have their works displayed in numerous areas of Citizens Bank Park. In addition to the fine arts program, the Phillies will supplement the effort with three different programs displaying statues. |
South Jersey Baseball: Monday, September 22, 2003 By Patrick Williams It’s a neon yellow boxy device weighing a few ticks under seven pounds -- but for a ballplayer who just took a line drive to the chest, the equipment can be a lifesaver. A baseball striking the chest on a line drive back to the mound at a velocity as low as 30 miles per hour can wreak severe damage on the chest and heart. Among the potential effects of a baseball to the chest is the disruption of the electrical conduction of the heart, which will send the body into cardiac arrest. Take a line drive to the chest and death is possible, if not probable. Eighty-four percent of people die if left untreated, according to a March 2002 article in the Journal of the American Medical Association. |
South Jersey Baseball: Sunday, July 27, 2003 By Jim Law The Berlin Township Athletic Association recently honored Mr. Frank Buchanan by naming its first wooden bat baseball tournament after him. Mr. Buchanan has served in one capacity or another for the local associations baseball program for the past thirty years. In addition he has been Mr. Baseball in South Jersey for the same time period as an official of Little League and umpires association. Naming the tournament after him is a well-deserved honor. Mr. Buchanan was in attendance for the first pitch of the tournament as well as presentation of the championship awards. Congratulations Frank. |
High School Baseball: Tuesday, June 10, 2003 By Vincent Lewis The South Jersey Group IV baseball champions Shawnee Renegades had to wait for what seemed an eternity before they had a chance of adding a state title to their school’s trophy case. Not only has mother nature postponed their match up with the Kearny Kardinals until today, the Renegades also had to wait even longer due to the length of the Parochial A finals going extra innings. That delay did not bother Shawnee’s starting pitcher Sean Doolittle as he struck out twenty-three batters on route to capturing the Renegades first ever-state title. Shawnee broke a one all tie in the ninth inning and went on to win 5-3 at Toms River South. |
High School Baseball: Tuesday, June 3, 2003 By Vincent Lewis Gloucester Catholic was not happy with just making it to the South Jersey Parochial B championship game. The Rams won a very competitive game against Bishop Eustace on Saturday by rallying their way into the finals. This game would bring them one step away from adding another title for their school and a very successful coaching staff led by Dennis Barth. The players would responded in a big way late in their game against St. Rose at Washington Township scoring two runs in the sixth inning. Those runs would give Gloucester Catholic a 4-2 win and send the Rams on the field in celebration. |
High School Baseball: Saturday, May 31, 2003 By Vincent Lewis It was a day that most would have rather stay at home completing their indoor chores that needed to be done. The day’s forecast was not a favorable one for the game of baseball, but it was a day that no one wanted to see this semi-final rescheduled. The steady light rain did not put a damper on this game at Bishop Eustace Prep as the Crusaders were hosting Gloucester Catholic for a chance to advance to the South Jersey Parochial B title. Gloucester Catholic dodged the raindrops and their four run deficit to storm past Eustace by a 10-7 margin. With their victory, the Rams will seek to capture the sectional title at Washington Township on Tuesday. |
High School Baseball: Friday, May 30, 2003 By Vincent Lewis It was a familiar opponent playing in an unfamiliar place. Two teams from the area traveled to The Sandcastle ball field in Atlantic City to compete for the South Jersey Group IV championship. The fifth seeded Renegades from Shawnee were the host team for their meeting with the seventh seeded Minutemen from Washington Township. These teams knew each other well and it showed on the baseball diamond. With the Minutemen tying the game during their top half of the seventh inning, Bill Gartlan's single in the bottom half of the inning scored the winning run giving Shawnee the title. |
High School Baseball: Tuesday, May 27, 2003 By Vincent Lewis When you are branded with the number one seed from any bracket, there are some pressures placed on that team, as the expectations are high on both benches. The opposing team usually plays with a bit more intensity looking for that edge to find a way to knock off their opponent. But in this case, the Pirates from Cinnaminson continued what they have been doing all season…winning games. Starting pitcher Will O’Connor pitched a gem against the thirteen seeded Greyhounds from Northern Burlington. This semi-finals game for the South Jersey Group 2 title was won by the Pirates, 9-0. John Carson highlighted the game with his three run homer. |
High School Baseball: Monday, May 19, 2003 By Jerome Michaels The South Jersey Group III baseball tournament began with two neighboring school competing against one another. It wasn’t much of a travel, but the Chargers from Timber Creek visited Highland High School to take on the Tartans baseball team. Highland had earned the fifth seed and was looking to advance to the next round against Williamstown. The Chargers took charge of this game scoring once in the first and twice in the third inning to score enough runs to advance. Mike Cummings picked up the win for Timber Creek, seeded twelfth, and earned the rights to play in the next round with their 6-2 win. |
High School Baseball: Monday, May 19, 2003 By Vincent Lewis It was that time of the baseball season when all of the previous regular season records are thrown out of the window. All of their efforts have paid off, as every team making the playoffs has to feel some since of satisfaction extending their season. On this day, the fifth seeded Shawnee Renegades were hosting the Mustangs from Triton High School. Sean Doolittle has his work cut out for him as he faced a Triton team looking to keep their winning streak in tack. The junior starting pitcher was able to keep the Mustangs in check when it counted to help Shawnee advance to the next round with their 6-4 victory. |
High School Baseball: Wednesday, May 14, 2003 By Vincent Lewis With the regular season coming down to its final games, there are a few divisional races that are shaping up to being a dog race. The team that's able to keep up the winning pace will prove to be the winner in a fiercely competitive battle. One of those races was from the Olympic Conference National Division. Two of those teams met head to head with Bishop Eustace hosting the Eagles from Paul VI. The Crusaders would win this race in eight innings outscoring their opponent 6-5. |
High School Baseball: Tuesday, May 13, 2003 By Bob Wankel Mark this story in the "are you kidding me?" section. Call the 2003 edition of Triton baseball team the comeback kids, call them streaky, call them whatever you want, but call them qualifiers for the baseball state tournament. |
High School Baseball: Monday, May 12, 2003 By Jerome Michaels The Crusaders from Bishop Eustace were looking to increase their number in the win column after losing on Saturday breaking their four game win streak. Cherry Hill East had other plans as were looking to keep pace in the American Division of the Olympic Conference. Both teams needed this game, not only to claim their divisional titles, but also compete against a competitive team preparing them for the upcoming postseason. The Crusaders would use the third and fourth innings to blow past the Cougars by a 9-3 margin. |
High School Baseball: Saturday, May 10, 2003 By Jerome Michaels Another year has arrived to welcome the South Jersey Baseball Coaches Association's Diamond Classic Tournament celebrating its 30th anniversary. Sixteen teams will compete for the championship that will be held this year at Campbell's Field in Camden. Before that can happen, games will be played at Washington Township High School, Maple Shade High School and Rowan University during the first round. The Shawnee Renegades were one of those teams hosting Paul VI in Washington Township. The Renegades exploded in the second inning to easily defeat the Eagles by a 7-1 margin. They will now face the winner of the Bishop Eustace against Florence game. |
High School Baseball: Wednesday, May 7, 2003 By Jerome Michaels It was a chance for Holy Cross to create some space between them and the second place team chasing them in the Burlington County Liberty Division. The baseball team from Rancocas Valley was that team traveling to Delran looking to make up some ground late in the season. Their efforts would come up short, as the Lancers were able to stay one step ahead of Rancocas Valley. Holy Cross was able to push across three more runs than the ever-so-dangerous Red Devils. After seven innings, the Lancers walked away with a 5-2 all-important victory. |
High School Baseball: Tuesday, April 29, 2003 By Jerome Michaels The Colonial Conference has been arguably one of the toughest to compete in for high school baseball. Each one of the eleven teams has had a taste of being one of the leaders of the conference during their years in competition. This year, four teams are looking to separate themselves from the rest of the pack. Two of those teams met today at Haddonfield High School as the Bulldogs were hosting the Eagles from West Deptford. Haddonfield would be able to manufacture more runs that West Deptford and come away with the 6-4 win at home. |
High School Baseball: Monday, April 28, 2003 By Vincent Lewis The Vikings from Eastern has started their baseball season extremely well winning eight of their first nine games they played. During that span, Eastern had been scoring just over eight and a half runs a game. After losing big against Cherry Hill East, Eastern was looking to rebound back to the win column as they traveled to Washington Township to take on the Minutemen. On this day, the Vikings’ fifth inning runs would be the difference in this Olympic Conference American Division game. Curtis Hart would earn the victory as Eastern posted a 6-3 to remain among the leaders in the division. Scott Mauger hit a solo homerun for the Vikings. |
High School Baseball: Camden Catholic Surprises Cherry Hill West With Late Rally Wednesday, April 23, 2003 By Jerome Michaels Cherry Hill West has been rolling through their schedule that includes wins at several tournaments. Starting out with a winning streak, West could contribute their success to good coaching, strong pitching and some timely big hits. Rewarded for their hard work, West has been labeled as one of the top teams in South Jersey. Camden Catholic has heard all about their opponent's success and still went on to play the game they knew they could play. With a four run deficit, the Irish scored five unanswered runs to defeat Cherry Hill West by an 8-7 margin. |
High School Baseball: Haddonfield's Fourth Inning Enough to Defeat Sterling Monday, April 14, 2003 By Jerome Michaels The Colonial Conference is loaded with teams capable of capturing the title with a formable pitching staff and big time hitters. Two of those teams met in Haddonfield as the Bulldogs were hosting the Knights from Sterling High School. Haddonfield’s Andy Console would pick up the pitching decision in this game, as the Bulldogs would put together a six run rally in the bottom of the fourth inning. By posting their 8-4 win, Haddonfield handed Sterling their first defeat of this young baseball season. |
High School Baseball: Patterson's Grand Slam Gives Triton Its First Win Monday, April 14, 2003 By Vincent Lewis Getting that first hit of the season has to bring relief to a batter to they finally finding some open spaces for that elusive base hit. That personal achievement could go un-noticed as the team still hasn’t recorded their first win of the season. Shawnee has gotten off to a quick start winning their first three games looking to add one more game to their streak against the Mustangs from Triton High School. On this day, Triton would collect ten hits including a bases loaded homerun from senior Ryan Patterson in the second inning. Triton’s early success was enough to hold off the Renegades and go on to post a 10-8 victory at home. |
High School Baseball: Second Inning Surge Highlights Collingswood Victory Wednesday, April 2, 2003 By Vincent Lewis It was an inning that Audubon wanted to forget, but one to remember for the Panthers baseball team from Collingswood High School. Trailing by a run after the first inning, Collingswood’s bats came alive breaking open their Colonial Conference game against last year’s South Jersey Group 2 champions. The Panthers scored nine runs in the second inning and then eight more runs to end this game early. Both Roy DiLiberto and Chris Brown hammered three run homeruns to highlight Collingswood’s 20-8 victory against Audubon. |
High School Baseball: Triton Enters Season Among South Jersey Elite Tuesday, March 25, 2003 By Bob Wankel Coming off of a season that ended in disappointment, the Mustangs take to the field this season with one goal in mind: Win the conference title. They look to build on a solid showing last season that fell just short of a conference championship. The team got off to blazing start with victories in a season opening tournament against some of the finest teams in South Jersey. The start had the Mustangs eyeing a conference championship and a run deep into the state playoffs. They found themselves regarded by other programs as one of the top teams in South Jersey by mid-April. Despite having talented depth across the board, and getting off to a blazing start, the Mustangs cooled off come May and once again fell short of the elusive conference title to Cherry Hill West. |
Event Spotlight: Phillies Preview Center...Catch It If You Can Wednesday, February 5, 2003 By Mike Costantino I was recently fortunate enough to be invited to the Phillies Ballpark Preview Center along with other media contingents. The Ballpark Preview Center is a 12,000 square foot building situated on South 7th street, not far from the ongoing construction of Philadelphia’s other new stadiums. Chief communication officer Sharon Swainson greets us along with her assistant Deborah. Sharon is also the spokesperson for the new ballpark. Having worked in television, as an executive for Disney, and assisted in opening other ballparks, Sharon’s experience is very impressive. The Preview Center features full-scale mock-ups of suite and club areas. These areas are used as display sites for the championship trophy, briefing and closer rooms. So far it’s been a great marketing tool for selling 58 of the 71 suites available. |
