By now, thousands of people have been introduced to or are just continuing participants in the 7th Annual Memorial Day Classic. The Voorhees Soccer Association has been a way of life in the South Jersey soccer world over past Memorial Day weekends. Of course the tournament is set up for girls and boys ranging between 7 and 18 years old, but there are other people who play an important part of making the VSA tournament experience an enjoyable one.

The Vineland Soccer Association's 11th Annual Memorial Day Weekend Tournament was the largest and best attended in history, as well as, the sunniest and HOTTEST. 156 teams from Delaware, Southern and Central New Jersey, Long Island, NY and Southeastern Pennsylvania brought players to Vineland. That comes to a total of about 2,300 soccer players. Adding in families and fans, this brings the total number of people to over 7,000 attending. The event brings in more than $1.4 million in hotel rooms, food, drinks, ice, and lots of suntan lotion.

The Voorhees Soccer Association opened its 7th Annual Memorial Day Classic on a beautiful warm and sunny afternoon, a perfect start to four days of youth soccer. This year the tournament has 282 teams from seven different states, allowing the players to experience playing new opponents and great competition among all levels of teams.

In a SJGSL Junior American Division game on Thursday night, Pennsauken traveled to Berlin Twp. Pennsauken fell behind early 4-1, behind the good pitching of Berlin Twp. starter Lauren Thumm. But Pennsauken scored 5 in the second on back-to-back 2-run singles by Krystal Wilhelm and Annie Bilinsky, and never looked back on their way to a 12-6 victory.

The U-11 Washington Township Warriors traveled to Linwood, NJ to take on the Linwood Lightning for the East Continental Division title of the 1999 Spring South Jersey Soccer League. The Warriors, detemined to avenge a tough fought 3-2 loss to the Lightning during the regular season, were more than ready for the rematch. The Warriors scored a 4 - 2 dominating win, bringing their first division title to the Township.

Athlete Spotlight: Wednesday, May 26, 1999

Chris Catania is soon to become a senior at Edgewood High School. He is a well-rounded athlete that participates in different sports and is a good student. His favorite subject is Science and his least favorite is English. If his sports activities had to be pared down to just one sport he would choose wrestling over football. He has been wrestling for about 10 years and gets great self-satisfaction from the efforts, win or lose.

A SJGSA Girls 13-15 Junior Patriot Division game was played at Waterford Twp. Waterford jumped out to a 3-0 lead going into the 4th inning. In the bottom of the 4th Stratford got 2 runs making it a 4-2 game. In the bottom of the 6th inning with the bases loaded, one out and the score 7-3, Stratford hit a ball to right field. With the game on the line, Kaitlyn Schafer made a great catch and got the ball back to the infield to hold the runners which was the play of the game.

After a week of back to back losses and then the rain taking away a game, the girls were ready to start swinging the bats and throwing the ball. The first game was on Saturday, May 22 against Berlin Boro and the second game was Tuesday, May 25 against Clementon. The makeup game because of rain is tentatively scheduled to be played on June 1.
