South Jersey Soccer: Friday, May 28, 1999
By Gary Steiner The Voorhees Soccer Association opened its 7th Annual Memorial Day Classic on a beautiful warm and sunny afternoon, a perfect start to four days of youth soccer. This year the tournament has 282 teams from seven different states, allowing the players to experience playing new opponents and great competition among all levels of teams. At the opening ceremonies at Echelon Complex, tournament director Jeff Godel welcomed all the players, coaches, and fans to the Memorial Day Classic. Also present were assistant directors Howard Long and Bob Doherty. The Deputy Mayor of Voorhees, Ron Richards, welcomed the participants and gave the continuous support of the Township. Finally, the Voorhees Lightning U-13 Boys, representing the host VSA, sang the National Anthem to open the tournament. The first two games were the Girls U-13 Gold PYAA Patriots versus the Voorhees Volcanos, and the Boys U-12 Gold Kirkwood Hawks versus the West Deptford Wizards. The girls tied 1-1, while the boys' game was won by the Wizards 5-0. Click Here for tournament schedules, scores, and other information. Photos by Boog Williams
