High School Softball: Saturday, April 14, 2007 By Susan Hall The Lady Lions from Gloucester has the luxury of two very good starting pitchers on their team. Both Jill Stafford and Sam Dobleman have been perfect on the mound keeping opposing batters off balanced. In this game, Dobleman would get another start and was looking to extend Gloucester's unbeaten streak to six games. The Lady Cougars from Schalick and Gloucester would not score a run until the bottom of the fifth inning when Kelsey Cutler connected on a two run homerun. Schalick would get one of those runs back to pull within a run. Dobleman would take care of things during the final inning and preserve Gloucester's 2-1 victory. |
High School Field Hockey: Friday, November 3, 2006 By Stephanie Wright It was a match up between the second and third seed of the Central Jersey Group I field hockey tournament and there was no doubt that it would be a very close game. On the field, the Lady Crusaders from Bishop Eustace started out this game strong on both ends of the field pressuring Gloucester's defense during the opening moments. With every attempt in getting the game's first goal coming up short, Bishop Eustace just would give up. The Crusaders would score a goal in each half and reward themselves with a 2-0 win and advance to the finals against New Egypt. |
High School Soccer: Monday, October 9, 2006 By Jerome Michaels When the schedules are presented to the teams at the beginning of the season, players sometimes take notice of all of the dates for the divisional games. Those match ups have a lot of meaning in the standings no matter what the teams overall record maybe. In a Tri-County Conference Classic Division, the Pennsville Eagles traveled to Gloucester to take on the Lions in a classic boys' soccer game. Pennsville has struggled a bit this season picking up wins but was focused on one objective and that was to come away with that all important division victory. It took two overtime sessions for it to occur, but the Eagles' Phil Cornman scored the game winning goal as time was expiring giving Pennsville the 2-1 win. |
High School Softball: Monday, May 1, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty Here we go again! Another year has past and teams are enjoying the spring time weather we were having but an important date would trump any enjoyment of sunny skies. The cutoff date to qualify for the postseason tournament was less than two weeks away. Pitman, one of the teams hovering around the qualifying win/loss ratio, had to find a way of scoring against freshman pitcher Taylor Chain and the Lady Lions from Gloucester. The Lions' offense would provide enough run support early on and Gloucester would continue to remain amongst the leaders of the Tri-County Conference Classic Division with their 7-1 over Pitman. |
High School Softball: Friday, April 21, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty The Tri-County Conference Classic Division had two teams that were undefeated so far and one of those teams were the Lady Eagles from Pennsville. Woodstown would be the other team in first place ahead of Pennsville, Schalick and the Lady Lions from Gloucester. After having their five game winning streak snapped, the Lions would host the undefeated Eagles in search of rebounding from a tough loss earlier in the week. Gloucester would overcome an early deficit in a big way by scoring nine unanswered runs against the Eagles over four innings. When the final out was recorded by starting pitcher Sam Dobleman, the Lions would be on the winning side of a 10-6 victory. |
High School Basketball: Tuesday, February 7, 2006 By Jerome Michaels This game was about two teams heading in two different directions. The Bulldogs from Glassboro has been successful at winning those important games from their division while the Lions from Gloucester have been looking for ways to come away with a win. The way the first half of this Tri-County Conference Classic Division game ended, neither team held an advantage. It wouldn't be until midway through the third quarter that the Bulldogs would begin to slowly pull away. Glassboro would finish off Gloucester by posting a 68-45 victory. |
High School Basketball: Monday, January 16, 2006 By Susan Hall There were two teams looking to end two different streaks during the third annual Cougar Classic girls’ basketball tournament held at Cherry Hill East High School. For the Lady Lions from Gloucester City, they were looking to extend their two game winning against Eastern. The Vikings on the other hand were trying to stop a losing streak of two games. The way the second half started, it appeared as if each team would extend their streaks by one game. Appearances can be deceiving especially when a team completely dominates an entire quarter to control a game. Eastern’s eleven point lead heading into the final quarter was enough to hold onto their 59-51 victory over Gloucester. |
High School Field Hockey: Monday, September 12, 2005 By Susan Hall Every team would like to pick up that first win on the first day that the season begins. It’s not a big disappointment if your teams doesn’t win during that game, but it’s one that team would like to forget quickly. For the Cougars from Schalick and the Lions from Gloucester City, both were looking to pick up that first win of the season in a Tri-County Conference Classic Division. During the first half of this game, the two teams played evenly and this game would be decided in the second half. Gloucester City’s Lauren Ross would break the deadlock with a goal halfway through the period and the defense would hold on to pick up the 2-1 victory. |
High School Soccer: Saturday, September 10, 2005 By Susan Hall The game is soccer is definitely a team sport that every person on the team desires to come away with the win. Together, each player works hard in positioning themselves into receiving the ball and moving it down field for a scoring chance. That’s what Gloucester City girl’s soccer team had to do in order to control the tempo early against visiting Lindenwold in a non-league game. Gloucester would score the first goal of the game and never looked back. The Lady Lions from Gloucester would win this game by a 4-1 margin. Erika Smizer scored a goal and had two assists. |
High School Softball: Tuesday, May 31, 2005 By Susan Hall It was considered the upset of this year’s group tournament. The eighth seeded Lady Lions from Lindenwold were up against considerable odds when they played Pennsville in the quarterfinals of the South Jersey Group 1 tournament. By scoring early runs, the Lions were able to hold off the number one seed to advance to the next round. This time traveling to Gloucester, Lindenwold used a different approach by rallying in the seventh inning to take a one run lead. The fourth seeded Lions from Gloucester responded in dramatic fashion by scoring two runs during the bottom of the inning with two outs to advance to the finals when Sam Dobleman nailed the game winning single for Gloucester. With that clutch hitting, Gloucester would win this game by a 4-3 margin. |
High School Baseball: Wednesday, April 20, 2005 By Jerome Michaels This game was a preview of what could happen again in the playoffs. Pennsville and Gloucester met during last year’s group championship game with the Eagles winning by four runs over top seeded Gloucester. Both teams are expected to return to the final game, but there was a regular season standing in their way. Proving that they are better than the team that captured the Tri-County Conference Classic Division title, Pennsville expanded a three run advantage by scoring ten runs in the sixth to pick up the 18-6 victory at Gloucester. |
High School Basketball: Tuesday, February 15, 2005 By Jason Brown The excitement at Gloucester City High School was at an all-time high with the division leading Cougars from Schalick entering the building. By now, many know the talents of Paul Gause and his attempt in closing in on his milestone 3,000 career point total. Whether that intimidated Gloucester or not, the Lions didn't seem to be effected leading at the half by thirteen points. But from that point on, Schalick fought back to tie this game at the end of regulation and send it into overtime twice. Gause along with his teammates pulled out the victory by a 79-74 margin. |
High School Football: Thursday, November 25, 2004 By Jason Brown It's always special when these two teams meet on the field, but it was something else that brought these two football teams from Gloucester together on Thanksgiving Day. The game was being played in honor of Marine Corporal Marc Ryan who was killed in action in Iraq. The former Gloucester player had his number 19 placed on the field for all to salute at the beginning of the game. When the opening whistle was blown to start this game, Gloucester Catholic broke open a close game during the third quarter and never looked back. The Rams from Gloucester Catholic cruised to a 40-14 victory. |
High School Field Hockey: Monday, November 8, 2004 By Susan Hall It's something that the Gloucester field hockey team has gotten use to, which is making it to the South Jersey Group 1 finals. For the past five years, the Lady Lions have been making it a habit showing up in four out of the past five years battling for the title. Gloucester will meet a familiar opponent in the finals all due to the 2-1 win over Salem in the semifinals. The Lions will be taking on St. Joseph for the third year in a row. |
High School Soccer: Tuesday, October 12, 2004 By Susan Hall No matter how you look at it, winning games always create a nice atmosphere to play in. The confidence of knowing what it takes to put together a game plan by the coaching staff and executing it on the field can only help a team for the remainder of the season. Clayton has demonstrated that they have been working together enough to win their fourth game in a row. This time traveling to Gloucester City to take on the Lions, the Clashes posted a 3-1 victory on the road. |
High School Football: Saturday, September 25, 2004 By Jerome Michaels Bouncing back from a tough loss in their season opener, Gloucester was the favorite in their home game against Pennsville. But being the favorite could add some pressure to a team that it takes a while for them to relax. It only took one and a half minutes into this game that the Lions showed how relaxed they were on the field. Senior runningback David Saunders scored the first of three first quarter touchdowns. The offensive line was not done opening wholes for anyone to run through. By the end of the game, Gloucester cruised to a 41-14 win to pick up their first victory of the season. |
