High School Soccer: Tuesday, September 19, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty It's that time of the year when the last days of warm weather are upon us and you can find most outside enjoying it. Also taking advantage of their opportunities were the Lady Spartans from Deptford girls’ soccer team. The Spartans were hosting a young Overbrook team with a lot of determination and speed. Deptford would start out this game controlling the play and take a two goal lead at the break. During the second half of this Tri-County Conference Royal Division game, it was all Deptford and they would post a 7-1 victory for their third win of this young season. Kim Barger scored three goals for the Lady Spartans. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, March 2, 2006 By Jerome Michaels The race to the group finals just got a bit interesting. On one side of the bracket, the Panthers from Camden had knocked off the number two seed in Highland. When the Spartans from Deptford traveled to Pemberton in search of an upset over the number one seeded team, it would take a sound performance by the so called underdog in this game to come up with the win. Rickie Crews was up for the challenge as he would lead Deptford’s recovery from an early deficit and then regain their lead down to stretch. The Spartans would post a 59-56 victory to knock off the top seed in a South Jersey Group 3 game played at Pemberton. |
High School Basketball: Tuesday, February 28, 2006 By Jason Brown During the first round of the playoffs, teams are rewarded a seeding which allows the highest seed to host a game. Both basketball programs at Moorestown qualified for the group tournament and both were hosting their first round games. First up were the seventh seeded Lady Quakers taking on the Spartans from Deptford who were the tenth seed. Kara Burnham had a strong performance at both ends of the court helping Moorestown control this game down the stretch. The Quakers would move onto the next round of the South Jersey Group III tournament with their 54-40 victory. With the win, Moorestown will travel to Ocean City and take on the second seeded Red Raiders. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, January 26, 2006 By Jason Brown With the month of January coming to an end, it serves as a constant reminder that the February cutoff date for teams to have a five hundred record or better in near to qualify for the upcoming state tournament. Two teams from two different groups but having similar goals competed in a Tri-County Conference Royal Division game. The Spartans from Deptford traveled to Clearview in search of picking up a division win, but more importantly stay or move closer to the requirement to qualify for the tournament. Deptford would start with game with a lead and maintain it through four quarters. The Spartans' 73-56 victory would move them one step closer to extending their season into the playoffs. |
High School Football: Saturday, November 5, 2005 By Jerome Michaels The Braves from Williamstown has proven game after game that they could run the ball against any defense. They have been successful all season long with that philosophy as their undefeated record is proof of their success. Traveling to Deptford participating in a Tri-County Conference Royal Division game, Williamstown were unsuccessful scoring a rushing touchdown against the Spartans but would go to the passing game and surprise their opponent twice with touchdowns. The Braves defense would prevent Deptford from tying this game with time expiring and preserve their undefeated record by defeating the Spartans 14-7. |
High School Football: Saturday, October 29, 2005 By George Brookings Football is a game of momentum and usually work when that them takes advantage of that emotional edge that spreads through the entire team. The Spartans from Deptford was that team expected to win their game against the Tartans from Highland. Someone forgot to tell the Tartans to just move aside and let Deptford win. Early into this game, Highland’s momentum had the edge and the lead in this Tri-County Conference Royal Division football game. Fullback Ryan Leafey’s two first half scores quickly erased Highland’s advantage leading Deptford to scoring 30 unanswered points. The Spartans went on to post a 43-28 victory. |
High School Football: Saturday, October 22, 2005 By Jerome Michaels The way this game started out, it looked as if the Spartans from Deptford would be victims of Gloucester Catholic’s controlled running game. The Rams held onto the football during the game’s opening drive for just about all of the first quarter. Deptford’s bend don’t break defense would be able to dig their cleats deep into the mud and prevent the Rams from scoring on that drive. Both teams would score second quarter touchdowns, but it wasn’t until the second half that halfback Ryan Leafey scored his second and third rushing touchdowns of the game and pull away from Gloucester Catholic. Deptford would pick up their fifth victory of the season with their 28-13 victory over the Rams. |
High School Soccer: Friday, September 23, 2005 By Clark Washington For the first half of this boy's soccer game held at Deptford High School, the Colts from Cumberland and the Spartans patiently maneuvered themselves back and forth in each others end of the field looking for that opportunity of putting that soccer ball into their opponents net. Neither team had success scoring during the first forty minutes which left the coaching staff making adjustment during the break. Cumberland would finally break the scoreless tie by scoring two quick goals to pull in front of a determined Spartans squad. The Colts would add one more goal and preserve the shutout as goalie Kyle Bayzick turned away every shot that came his way. |
High School Softball: Wednesday, April 20, 2005 By Susan Hall It's not uncommon to see a starting pitcher complete one game and then find that same pitcher staying on the mound to pitch yet another game on the same day. This past weekend in the Overbrook tournament, Nicole Ayres pitched twice and picked up two completed game wins for the Lady Spartans from Deptford against Pennsville and Eastern and she was not done. Starting in a Tri-County Conference Royal Division match-up against Cumberland, Ayres pitched recorded twelve strikeouts and Jackie Brown collected four hits helping the Spartans to a 17-0 win over the Colts. |
High School Wrestling: Thursday, January 27, 2005 By Anthony Phillips Not too often we get to see two evenly matched teams take the mat when both school's wrestling programs are expected to come away with the victory. Pound for pound, muscle against muscle and strength for strength could be described by the match between Audubon and Deptford. These two undefeated teams with individual records at stake, there will be someone coming away with the loss but the team as a whole would be first on the minds of the coaching staff. After Audubon's Carmen Fanelli decision tied the match with four bouts remaining, Brandon Baxter and Matt Ahearn put the Green Wave ahead for good with pins in the 140 and 145 bout. Audubon walked away with a 37-25 decision and increased their record to 8-0. |
High School Basketball: Saturday, January 8, 2005 By Jerome Michaels The Spartans boy's basketball team started their non-league game against Washington Township in full control maintaining their lead for the majority of the game. Instead of a game that Deptford could have opened and maintain a double-digit lead, Township found a way to cut into their deficit to make it a very competitive and exciting ending. Deptford's Aigner Green converted six straight free throws down the stretch to hold off the Minutemen. Despite posting twenty-two scored in the final quarter, Deptford controlled the boards long enough to hold onto a five point advantage during the final eight minutes. The Spartans picked up their second victory in a row to increase their record to 7-1 with their 48-42 win. |
High School Football: Saturday, December 4, 2004 By Vincent Lewis There’s much to say about a team winning a championship and trying to defend that title could be considered a very tough uphill battle. Teams always have to compensate for the loss of graduating seniors, coaching changes and sometimes injuries. The Spartans from Deptford High School could be entered into this category and their amazing quest to repeat relied on them coming away with a victory against a determined Moorestown football squad. In a very entertaining South Jersey Group 3 championship game, Deptford’s late fourth quarter touchdown run by DaJuane Collins was the deciding score against the Quakers. Deptford captured their second straight title with their 28-21 victory. |
High School Football: Saturday, November 20, 2004 By Vincent Lewis There was a discussion before the game whether Pemberton's passing game would be able to keep up with Deptford's option offense. During the early moments of the South Jersey Group 3 semifinals game, it would seem as if the defenses would have their hands full. Both teams relied on their offensive lines for protection and both scored touchdowns in the first quarter indicating more points were about to come. But as the game began to develop, the Spartans' defense came up big at the right moments allowing the offense to score on a key 97 yard drive. That touchdown was the beginning of Deptford's 28-13 win over Pemberton propelling them into the finals again. |
High School Football: Saturday, October 9, 2004 By Jerome Michaels Sure there have been teams that have gone two to three football seasons without losing a game. When a team accomplishes any winning streak that has gone to double digits, that team deserves to be congratulated on playing together as a team to come away with all of those wins. Deptford's success continues on the football field when they hosted the Crusaders from Delsea. Two touchdowns by Sheldon Johnson and an insurance touchdown run by DaJuane Collins were enough points for the defense to preserve Deptford's 19-13 Tri-County Conference Royal Division victory. |
High School Football: Saturday, September 18, 2004 By Jerome Michaels With the threat of heavy rain resulting from tropical storms, there were some doubts of whether or not the outdoor activities would have to be postponed. Well the area did receive rain, but not enough to stop Kingsway from traveling to Deptford in a Tri-County Conference competition. The Spartans, South Jersey Group III defending champs, took advantage of their opportunities scoring twice in the first half and score enough points to pick up the victory against Kingsway. Deptford went on to defeat Kingsway by a 28-8 margin. |
