High School Softball: Monday, May 21, 2007 By Joyce Sagerty It was a game that both teams would remember how the last meeting ended on the field. The Lady Crusaders from Bishop Eustace used their last at bat to steal away a one run victory over Camden Catholic. During their rematch, there wouldn't be a dramatic come-from-behind victory but the Lady Irish would use clutch hitting and good pitching to even the score. Camden Catholic's early run support allowed starting pitcher Alyssa O'Donnell and the rest of the defense limited their opponent to a single run. The Irish would win this game by a 6-1 victory. |
High School Baseball: Monday, May 21, 2007 By Jerome Michaels There's a race for the title taking place and three teams, Seneca, Bishop Eustace and Camden Catholic are all in contention of claiming the Olympic Conference National Division title. Two of those teams met at Camden Catholic where the Fighting Irish was hosting the Crusaders from Bishop Eustace and both teams had the talent to win the big games when needed. Camden Catholic would use their home field advantage and belted four home runs to defeat their opponent. The Irish never trailed in this game and won by a 12-4 margin. |
High School Lacrosse: Thursday, May 10, 2007 By George Brookings It was a team effort, no doubt about it. The Lady Irish from Camden Catholic's girls' lacrosse team was very determined not to let their guard down against the Lady Panthers from Collingswood. These two teams have a history of one team coming from behind and defeating the other. On this day, Camden Catholic kept their intensity during both halves of this game and quickly took control. Michelle Vittese scored six goals for Camden Catholic helping the Irish build a lead that they were able to feel comfortable about. The Irish would post a 20-6 win over Collingswood. |
High School Baseball: Thursday, April 19, 2007 By Jerome Michaels The Chiefs from Cherokee are enjoying a season where their pitching staff has been coming through with some qualify innings. It appears that each time a pitcher steps onto the mound, not only are they limiting their opponents scoring chances but also their teammates have provided some run support. Starting his first game of the season, Ben Flanary pitched six innings for Cherokee helping his own cause with a two run homer against the Fighting Irish from Camden Catholic. Cherokee would cruise to their eighth consecutive victory when they picked up the 8-2 win at Camden Catholic. |
High School Softball: Monday, April 9, 2007 By Joyce Sagerty Spring is that time of the year that most people look forward to with the warm temperatures and sunny skies allowing them to enjoy all of the outdoor sporting events. So far the weather is not cooperating with the season, but that's not stopping Washington Township from heating up the base paths. The cooler temperatures might have slowed down a few teams from picking up those wins during the first week of the season, but the Minutemaids have been able to provide run support for starting pitcher Alyssa Maiese. So far this season, Maiese has not given up a single run and was looking to continue that streak at Camden Catholic. Washington Township broke open a close game during the late innings and was able to pick up a 6-0 win over the Fighting Irish. |
High School Softball: Tuesday, April 3, 2007 By Susan Hall It was a match-up between two of the most dominating pitchers in the area. Camden Catholic's Alyssa O'Connell versus Gloucester Catholic's Brittney Carosia received most of the attention on this day as the Lady Rams were looking to pick up their second win in the road this time at Camden Catholic. The Lady Irish would gain the early momentum in this game, but a close play at home quickly swung this game in favor of the visiting team. A key hit by Shauna Vennell provided only run of the game for Gloucester Catholic and the Lady Rams would pick up the 1-0 victory in a non-league game. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, February 1, 2007 By Stephanie Wright Both Washington Township and Camden Catholic's girls' basketball teams were trying to prove which team deserved the respect from the other. The Minutemaids were riding a six game impressive winning streak and they were looking to extend it by one game against the undefeated Lady Irish. It was yet another test that both teams knew they had to past and Camden Catholic would get the higher grade on this day. The Lady Irish quickly erased an early third quarter deficit and dominated the second half. Camden Catholic improved their record to 15-0 with their 76-55 victory over Washington Township. |
High School Football: Saturday, November 25, 2006 By George Brookings It was that time of the early when the traditional Thanksgiving football game could be found in your neighborhood. On Saturday at Paul VI High School, the Eagles were hosting the Fighting Irish in another one of those old time classic match ups. The Irish has had their way so far in their series against one another, but this was a different season for the Eagles. Paul VI would rely on their defense during the fourth quarter coming up with a key defensive play and maintain their three point lead. That's when Jonathan Grimes scored the final touchdown of the game giving Paul VI the 17-7 victory over the Fighting Irish. |
High School Field Hockey: Monday, October 30, 2006 By Stephanie Wright With the seedings for the upcoming state tournament already established, Camden Catholic's success during the regular season has rewarded them with a bye during the first round of the South Jersey Group II field hockey tournament. The start of this year's quest for the title begins tomorrow but the Irish still had a regular season divisional game to play against Paul IV. This was an opportunity for both teams to finish off the season with a good showing on the field. Camden Catholic would use this opportunity to prepare for the postseason and they did so by posting a 7-1 victory over the Lady Eagles. Kathleen Notos led the way for the Irish by scoring three goals. |
High School Field Hockey: Saturday, October 21, 2006 By Susan Hall With the official pairings for the upcoming postseason playoffs being released on Monday, two teams would get a chance to use today's game as a tune up to the beginning of the NJSIAA field hockey tournament. The Lady Lions from Cherry Hill West and the Lady Irish from Camden Catholic both have clinched a position for the post season and had the opportunity to compete in a regular season game. The defense for Camden Catholic was able to keep the Lions off the scoreboard allowing the offense to put the only points on the scoreboard. Michelle Vittese scored two goals for the Irish helping the team to post the 4-0 win. Jess Pandola earned the shutout in goal for Camden Catholic. |
High School Field Hockey: Friday, September 22, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty Camden Catholic and Bishop Eustace is a rivalry that has it share of disappointments and excitement after coming away with a win. It's always that game that's marked on the calendar in anticipation of seeing which team is the better one on this day. These two neighboring schools can remember that goal that sent the other team home with a loss. Last year it was the Lady Crusaders who came away with a win over Camden Catholic to advance during the playoffs. Today, under different circumstances, the Lady Irish's field hockey team starting a new chapter by defeating Bishop Eustace by a 3-0 margin. Michelle Vittese scored twice to lead the Irish to victory. |
High School Football: Saturday, September 9, 2006 By Clark Washington You here it all of the time and yet they still sometimes get over looked. When the Fighting Irish from Camden Catholic traveled to Woodrow Wilson competing in a Burlington County/Olympic Conference inter-division football game, it would be the offensive line quietly working hard at protecting the quarterback or creating lanes to run through. Runningback Greg Wanamaker found out first hand how good that o-line was as on the first play from scrimmage, weaving his way through the Tigers’ defense and scored from 70-yards out. In a game where Woodrow Wilson opened the game with a moment of silence for Shykem Lawrence, senior player recovering from a spinal cord injury, the Tigers would open the season without their inspirational leader. The Irish would set the tone early and defeat Woodrow Wilson 26-0. |
High School Baseball: Thursday, May 25, 2006 By Jerome Michaels Baseball is that game where the entire team must come together collectively in order to walk off the field at the end of a game with the win. So far, and especially when it counts, the Fight Irish from Camden Catholic has been winning their games leading up to the South Jersey Non-Public Group A baseball tournament. Looking to put it all together during the post season, Camden Catholic jumped out to an early lead against ninth seeded St. Joseph Metuchen who had an agenda of their own. Watching their opponent rally to pull within a run, Camden Catholic would maintain their composure and advance to the next round with their 9-7 victory. Their reward would be a match up with the number one seeded Christian Brothers next week. |
High School Lacrosse: Wednesday, May 10, 2006 By Stephanie Wright Three teams were competing for the division as the regular season comes down to an end this weekend. With only a handful of games remaining, every win no matter who the opponent may be, is a must win. The Lady Panthers from Collingswood would be looking for a win at Camden Catholic and to end the Irish's eleven game unbeaten streak. Those two teams along with Seneca needed to win every game in order to claim the Olympic Conference National Division title. Camden Catholic would rally late in the game to pull within a single goal, but the Panthers' key possession off of a draw allowed Collingswood to pick up the 12-11 victory and hand the Irish their first loss of the season. |
High School Baseball: Thursday, May 4, 2006 By Jerome Michaels Coaches emphasize all of the time that the game is never over until the final out has been recorded. The past two games for Camden Catholic, they found themselves trailing by at least eight runs by the start of the fourth inning. Yesterday, the Irish just could not overcome their deficit against Seneca and loss that game. Against the Red Devils from Rancocas Valley, again Camden Catholic trailed by eight runs. This game using every at bat to their fullest advantage, the Irish rallied for eleven runs over their two innings to come from behind and defeat the Red Devils by a 12-9 margin. |
High School Softball: Wednesday, April 19, 2006 By Susan Hall For seven full innings, this game just could not be decided as neither team was able to score. Starting pitchers Alyssa O'Connell for Camden Catholic and Jamie Minix for Kingsway were able to rely on their defenses helping them preserve the scoreless tie after regulation. The Lady Dragons appeared to take advantage of a situation that resulted in two runs during the eighth inning, but Camden Catholic would respond to extend this game even further into extra innings. Finally with a runner in scoring position during the bottom of the tenth inning, Shannon Morlock single scored the deciding run to defeat Kingsway by a 3-2 margin. |
High School Baseball: Thursday, April 13, 2006 By Jerome Michaels It's very important, especially during the early part of the season, to pick up as many victories as a team can in order to keep up with the division leaders. A team will never know when and if a losing streak could happen, so winning those necessary games could cushion a fall if one does come around. In an Olympic Conference National Division baseball game played at Camden Catholic, the Fighting Irish would score early and often against the visiting Warriors from Camden County Vocational Tech. Starting pitcher Chris Dondarski would pick up the win on the mound for Camden Catholic. The Irish would defeat the Warriors by a 20-2 margin. |
High School Lacrosse: Thursday, April 6, 2006 By Clark Washington With the start of a new season, the Cherokee Chiefs boys' lacrosse team would be looking to improve on advancing further into the post season tournament and that would include defeating the Renegades from Shawnee. For several years, Shawnee has not only defeated the Chiefs in every game but they have also dominated the sport. Well, with the new season upon us, new beginnings can occur and the Chiefs finally were able to defeat Shawnee earlier in the week. So that was not good news for the Fighting Irish from Camden Catholic who traveled to Cherokee looking to pick up their second win. Matt Dunn was able to muscle his way past the defense and score a total of five goals helping the Chiefs pick up the 15-2 victory. |
High School Lacrosse: Saturday, April 1, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty A few weeks ago you could find players outdoor taking part of practices in anticipation of making the team. One of those sports would be the growing popularity of lacrosse. With more and more high schools establishing lacrosse teams in South Jersey, it can only benefit from the attention it’s getting. For Camden Catholic and Cherry Hill West who were starting off the season participating in an inter conference girls’ lacrosse team, it would be a chance for these two established squads to begin their season with victory. Midfielder Jessica Falcone would start the season off right by scoring five goals for Camden Catholic and the Lady Irish would pick up the 18-8 win at home against Cherry Hill West. |
High School Lacrosse: Saturday, April 1, 2006 By Clark Washington There's just over a month away before teams start worrying about the May 15th deadline to qualifying for the state tournament. With the start of a new season, it's always nice to pick up that first victory of the season especially on the first day. It puts a team one step closer in achieving that goal of extending the regular season. With new students making the team, this season will be interesting to watch. Participating in just their second season, the Golden Eagles from Seneca continue to impress in their game against Camden Catholic. The Golden Eagles would pick up the road victory with their 12-5 decision over the Fighting Irish. |
High School Basketball: Saturday, February 11, 2006 By Jerome Michaels It takes the game of basketball to bring out the awareness that help is needed financially for the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia fight against childhood cancers. There was plenty of basketball being played at the Cape-Atlantic Challenge held at Timber Creek to help the "Shoot Down Cancer Foundation, Inc." This year's event featured some very intriguing games including match-ups between several top 20 teams. So when the Red Raiders from Ocean City competed against Camden Catholic, it was an opportunity to attend a high school basketball game for a good cause. A slow start by Ocean City proved to be the difference in their 50-41 defeat to Camden Catholic. |
High School Wrestling: Friday, January 20, 2006 By Anthony Phillips It's no big secret that the wrestling program from Camden Catholic is very good at what they do. What they have done so far was to compile a winning record that has labeled them as one of the top wrestling teams in the state of New Jersey. With individual records at stake, each wrestler has made a personal commitment to come away with the win for the team. Ocean Township would be the next test for Camden Catholic and they would pass with a high grade. The Irish recorded pins during the first two bouts of the night and that momentum along with the fan support allowed Camden Catholic to wrestle their way to a 49-6 win. The Irish would increase their record to 15-2 and continue to lead the South Jersey Non-Public Group A standings. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, January 12, 2006 By Susan Hall Rashidat Junaid continues to show off her skills both on offense and defense for the girls' basketball team from Camden Catholic. When the match up with neighboring Bishop Eustace took place on their home court, Junaid did not disappoint her teammates or fans. The Lady Irish would stay a few steps ahead of their Olympic Conference National Division opponents during the entire game. The senior center would control the boards and score 20 points helping Camden Catholic post the 66-50 victory. With the win, the Irish would remain undefeated while Bishop Eustace would pick up their first loss in the division. |
High School Basketball: Saturday, January 7, 2006 By Jerome Michaels Seven days into the month of January, LEAP Academy boys' basketball team has been put to the test playing teams from North and South Jersey as well as teams from Philadelphia. The second year program has shown they have the talent to compete on the court and they would get another chance when they visited the undefeated Fighting Irish from Camden Catholic. The Lancers (9-2) would struggle on offense through the first half, but would pick up their scoring during the second half. Camden Catholic's team effort during the first half would be enough to pick up the 66-57 victory and increase their winning streak to eight games and no losses. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, January 5, 2006 By Jerome Michaels Even though most teams have completed just about a third of their schedule, enough games have been played in order to see which schools are playing up to their preseason expectations. There are still those teams looking to gain respect have established themselves as dominating teams that could come away with the win. For the Tigers from Woodrow Wilson traveling to take a ranked Camden Catholic team, a productive fourth quarter surge would send this game into overtime. But a very patient Irish squad came up with big time shots down the stretch and defeat Wilson 59-55 overcoming a four point deficit in overtime. |
High School Basketball: Tuesday, January 3, 2006 By Susan Hall Even before the season began, the Olympic Conference National Division seem to have several teams who could be ranked as a top team in South Jersey. Camden would be one of those teams in a rebuilding phase and would have to find a way to step up and compete with the other teams from their division. Camden Catholic would begin their game against the Lady Panthers quick and fast and control this game up until the very end. When the final buzzer was sounded, the Irish would walk off the court with an 83-34 victory at home. |
High School Football: Thursday, November 24, 2005 By Jason Brown There were a lot of reasons many showed up at Camden Catholic to witness a classic high school football game Thanksgiving morning. One reason would be to stay out of trouble with the chef of the house as temptations of sneaking a taste of the turkey dinner would bring on a slap on the wrist. During the Paul VI and Camden Catholic football game, many players got a chance to play in front of visiting family and friends. As for the game, the Eagles would finally break a tie when place kicker Joe Owens kicked the game winning field goal with seconds remaining on the clock. Paul VI would defeat the Fighting Irish 17-14 in a thrilling game. |
High School Field Hockey: Thursday, November 3, 2005 By Crystal Parker Coming into this game, both of these teams knew it wasn’t going to be easy to defeat their neighboring opponent. Experience has told them over and over again to limit giving up the corners and try not to leave any player alone in the box. Bishop Eustace traveling to Camden Catholic in first round action of the South Jersey Group II field hockey tournament were not successful at that task late in the second half. But what the Lady Crusaders were good at was scoring the only goal of this game and holding on to it. Hannah Rodgers’ goal just 48 seconds into the second half proved to be the game winner. |
High School Field Hockey: Thursday, October 27, 2005 By Susan Hall As the regular season winds down, it gives a team time to reflect on their season. Looking back on a few of those games, would the outcome of a game been different if the team ran their called play better? What ever the reason, field hockey is a game that’s played together as a single unit working towards a goal to win. This game between Cherry Hill West and Camden Catholic was about two teams headed into the upcoming tournament. Cherry Hill West and Camden Catholic had the chance to get ready for the start of the state tournament by giving several players a chance to play more minutes. Today, these two teams could not decide a winner as the two ended in a scoreless tie. |
High School Field Hockey: Wednesday, October 26, 2005 By Susan Hall Camden Catholic's Michelle Vittese continues to lead her team in scoring and she would add to that total against the Lady Eagles from Paul VI. In an Olympic Conference and important National Division field hockey game against the Eagles, the Lady Irish needed just one more divisional victory to clinch the title. Seneca was that team in their rear view mirror looking to find a way to sneak up and tie Camden Catholic in the standings. But Vittese would score two goals for the Lady Irish to lead them past Paul VI by a 5-0 score. |
High School Soccer: Wednesday, October 19, 2005 By Jason Brown The divisional battles are always very interesting as the season gets closer and closer to their final games. That’s usually the time that division titles are claimed adding a representation of their hard work to their school’s trophy case. It’s also that time that teams are working hard on the soccer field looking for that one opportunity to score a goal. Camden Catholic and Bishop Eustace were competing in an Olympic Conference National Division game that the Crusaders needed to win. Seneca were right on their heels in the standings, but the Irish were first on their minds. Two first half goals by Bishop Eustace was enough to hold off Camden Catholic by a 2-1 margin. |
