Jackson becomes the first Rutgers-Camden track All-American overall since Matt Collins (Gibbstown, NJ/Bishop Eustace) finished seventh in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 2001. |
South Jersey Soccer: Saturday, May 29, 2004 By John Thompson The South Jersey Barons went to work early on in this game effectively sealing the win after 12 minutes. They got of to a flying start and never looked back as they continued to pound the Vermont goal all game. Five Barons players got on the score sheet. First Tony Donatelli (Temple/Glendale, PA) volleyed home a cross from left winger Justin Saddler (Drexel/Philadlephia PA). Saddler turned from goal provider to goal scorer when he lashed a fierce drive that bulged the net. After Saddlers goal the Barons got a little lazy and let the Voltage back into the game until Bryon Carmicheal (Marshall/Lumberton, NJ) notched his third of the season after another great cross from Justin Saddler. Vermont then seized their chance after a period of continued pressure and slack defending by the Barons they worked the ball to captain Bo Simic who beat Pat Hannigan with a sweet side footed shot. |
Arena Football: Saturday, May 29, 2004 By Matthew Gionta The CardSharks defense held strong at the same time the offense provided just enough to defeat the two-time defending NIFL Champion Ohio Valley Greyhounds at Boardwalk Hall on Saturday night. The CardSharks (4-5) came into the game looking to avenge the 51-8 loss suffered on April 30th in Ohio Valley. The Greyhounds (8-2) have now lost merely three games in the past three seasons. |
South Jersey Baseball: Saturday, May 29, 2004 By Chuck Betson Rickey Henderson, the all-time major league leader in walks, runs and stolen bases, showed the Surf what he has been doing to the baseball world for over 20 years. Henderson reached base 4 times, scored 3 runs, drove in two and stole two bases. He singlehandedly scored the insurance run in the 6th inning that ended up being the difference as the Bears beat the Surf 8-7 in Newark. |
High School Baseball: Friday, May 28, 2004 By Jerome Michaels It was a battle between two familiar opponents, only this time the winner would be labeled as the South Jersey Group 2 Champions. For Sterling and Haddonfield, the battle for the final positions in the Colonial Conference title was a distant thought. It's been two years since the last time Sterling had advance to the finals and they took full advantage in the title game. Starting pitcher Andy Meyers held Haddonfield in check long enough for the Knights to constantly build on their lead through the first 4 innings. The result was a 7-1 victory and a chance for the title celebration to occur on their home field. |
South Jersey Baseball: Friday, May 28, 2004 By Chuck Betson The Atlantic City Surf lost their third player during the month of May to a major league organization. The Surf announced on Friday that starter Jeff Farnsworth's contract was purchased by the Milwaukee Brewers and he will report to their triple-A affiliate, the Indianapolis Indians. After a rocky opening day start, Farnsworth was one of the top starters this season for the Surf. He was 2-0 with a 2.96 ERA in four starts. He struck out nineteen and walked only three in his twenty-seven and a third innings of work. Farnsworth was tied for second in the league in wins and third in innings pitched. |

High School Softball: Thursday, May 27, 2004 By Crystal Parker Throughout the season, there have been many games where one team with a stellar pitching staff has completely dominated a softball game. Enjoying the luxury of placing any pitcher on the mound and knowing that for seven innings or more there will not be many runners crossing the plate has to make a coaching staff feel somewhat comfortable. With that much talent, the opposing team doesn't have much of a chance of getting a rally going to produce runs on the scoreboard. So what happens when both teams are successful with pitchers who can keep the batters guessing and control the outcome of a game? That's what was expected and happened in the South Jersey Group 4 championship game between Lenape and Cherokee. Only one run was scored amongst the two teams and that lone runner would be starting pitcher Allison Twarowski who gave Cherokee the winning run and the title in the first inning. Twarowski and Lenape's Jamie Moir were both spectacular for their teams as they have done all season long. |
South Jersey Baseball: Thursday, May 27, 2004 By Chuck Betson The Atlantic City Surf defeated the Somerset Patriots 15-1 at Sandcastle Stadium on Thursday afternoon. The Surf jumped out to an early lead with a five run second inning in front of 2,003 fans, mostly students, on School Special Day. The Surf's fifteen runs were their season high output. The Surf received four and a third shutout innings from starter Andy High before he had to leave with a twinge in his left forearm. High struck out four and gave up two hits and a walk in his abbreviated outing. Reliever Rob Corrado was awarded the win, allowing only one run in his three and two-thirds of innings of work. He gave up five hits, walked one, and struck out three. Reliever Kyle Goldwater pitched a scoreless ninth for the Surf. |
High School Baseball: Wednesday, May 26, 2004 By Jerome Michaels It was a contest between two Olympic Conference division leaders who had their share of victories and their records showed it. Today, the Lions from Cherry Hill West and leaders of the Patriot Division were playing host Bishop Eustace the division leaders from the National Division. Matching run for run, hit for hit, both teams demonstrated their offensive ability to score runs. Every run counted in this inter-conference game and the three scored in the bottom of the sixth inning proved to be the difference. The Cougars would outscore Bishop Eustace by an 11-8 margin. |
South Jersey Soccer: Wednesday, May 26, 2004 By Boog Williams The 2004 South Jersey Banshees of the Northeast Division W-League got to play the Washington Freedom of the WUSA in an exhibition game at Winslow High School on Wednesday night. South Jersey Soccer: Wednesday, May 26, 2004 By John Thompson The South Jersey Barons will face amateur side Allied SC from Baltimore in the first round of the 2004 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Allied SC compete in the USASA (United States Adult Soccer Association) league. The first round of the cup pairs PDL teams with USASA teams. Should the Barons advance they will have a home game against Syracuse in the second round. The Barons qualified for the Open Cup with a 3-0-1 record in its qualifying games. This has been the best start by a Barons team in the clubs short history. Wins over Brooklyn (5-0), Jersey Falcons (2-1), defending nationals champions Cape Cod (1-0) and a tie with Albany (1-1) put the Barons top of the PDL Eastern Conference Open Cup Qualifying. |
Arena Football: Wednesday, May 26, 2004 By Matthew Gionta The CardSharks will take on the Ohio Valley Greyhounds on Saturday at 7:30 PM in Historic Boardwalk Hall, while they dedicate the day to supporting United States Armed Forces with discounted tickets to all fans. The Greyhounds (8-1) are coming off a big win against the Carolina Stingrays, 62-27, while the CardSharks (3-5) lost to the Lexington Horsemen, 67-66, in the final 11 seconds of the game last week at the Hall. |
High School Softball: Tuesday, May 25, 2004 By Susan Hall It only took one run, and it was the biggest run of the game. When the seventh seeded Lady Panthers from Palmyra traveled to the third seeded Flashes from Florence, both teams knew that winning one more game would advance them into the South Jersey Group 1 championship game. These familiar opponents relied on their strong pitching so far this season and it continued today. Both Melissa Mehrer and Kristen Mackiewicz were pitching well in this game, and that one run scored by Florence in the bottom of the first inning was enough to win this nail-bitter. |
High School Lacrosse: Tuesday, May 25, 2004 By Joyce Sagerty There's a reason the girl's lacrosse team from Moorestown has dominated their sport and it was quite evident Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Quakers showed off their zone defense that held the powerful Eastern offense in check. Moorestown completely forced the Vikings to not play their style of aggressive lacrosse and the Lady Quakers took full advantage of turnovers. Moorestown scored the last eight goals of the second half and cruised from that point on. When the clock tick away at the end of this South Jersey Group A semifinals game, Moorestown would advance to the finals with their 12-2 win against Eastern. Margie Curran scored five goals in the first half to lead the Lady Quakers. |
South Jersey Track & Field: Tuesday, May 25, 2004 By Fred Alexander I just love to spread good news... That's why when I heard that a United States Gold Medalist was coming to Winslow Township. I knew you just had to know!!! High School Baseball: Tuesday, May 25, 2004 By Jerome Michaels It's a very interesting fact that was noticed when teams from the South Jersey Group 1 bracket compete for the title. For the past three seasons, the number one seeded team has been able to maintain the top seed and be claimed as the area's group winner. This year, the Lions from Gloucester have had the privilege of hosting every game as the number one seed and that continued with the hosting of the fourth seeded Warriors from New Egypt. Gloucester used a five run fifth inning to move into the finals with a 6-1 victory. The Lions will be looking to win the title as they will try again to defeat Pennsville for the second season in a row. |
High School Baseball: Monday, May 24, 2004 By Jerome Michaels It's never any fun losing a game, especially in the South Jersey group playoffs when your expectations are so high. For both Cinnaminson and Camden Catholic their baseball season was not quite over. This would be Cinnaminson's last regular season scheduled game and they ended it on a winning note. The Pirates found themselves down three runs early in the first inning but rallied to defeat Camden Catholic. Pitcher Will O'Connor settled down and kept the Irish off the scoreboard with help from his defense. Cinnaminson won the game by a 5-3 margin. |
High School Softball: Monday, May 24, 2004 By Susan Hall The end of the softball season came be very exciting with so much on the line. For those teams qualifying for the playoffs, advancing to the next round is usually the main focus of the team. For Haddonfield and Sterling, a Colonial Conference title is also still up for grabs to go along with competing for the South Jersey Group 2 title. But today's softball game had nothing to do with the playoffs. Starting pitcher Therese Taraschi highlighted Haddonfield's seventh consecutive shutout with 4-0 decision against Sterling. The Silver Knights were the last two to have scored runs against Haddonfield. |
South Jersey Baseball: Monday, May 24, 2004 By Chuck Betson Jeff Farnsworth went 7 and a third innings Sunday afternoon at Campbell's Field against the Camden Riversharks. He allowed just two runs, one earned, and walked none to raise his record to 2-0. Damon Ponce Deleon finished the eighth for Farnsworth by striking out the two batters he faced and Conor Brooks struck out three in the ninth to collect his second save of the season. Sunday's victory was the final game of a three-game series in Camden and raised the Surf record to 7-7. |
