South Jersey Youth Football: Sunday, October 5, 2003 By John Marcucci On the road for their first away game against the Willingboro Panthers the Minutemen had a 45-minute bus ride with the coaching staff going over the game plan for today’s match-up. After the past two weeks of injuries the Minutemen’s coaching staff headed by Anthony Astorga, put their heads together and tried to jockey positions around attempting to come up with a solution for the banged up Minutemen. As the game got under way, it seemed like the Minutemen were struggling with the offensive and defensive line assignments. The Panthers a big team but not a very fast team seemed to move the ball well against our defense, which put pressure on the Minutemen’s defensive backfield and secondary. |
High School Football: Saturday, October 4, 2003 By Charlie Barker After leading 20-0 in the first half, the Lindenwold Lions held off a surge by the Green Wave of Audubon in the third quarter to take home the 20-12 victory. Lindenwold's quarterback, sophomore Ricky Pisaturo, threw touchdown passes of 37 and 57 yards to lead the Lions' offense. |
High School Football: Friday, October 3, 2003 By Vincent Lewis The way this game started out, it looked as if the Chiefs wouldn’t need to rally from a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat the Chimeras from Willingboro. Cherokee’s senior runningback Marc Orosz has demonstrated that he has the ability plow through an interior defense and gain huge amount of yardage for a touchdown. Willingboro was a witness to that on the Chiefs first play from scrimmage, but it didn’t effect them too much as they had scored twenty unanswered points in the second and third quarters. Cherokee’s ground game keyed their 26-20 interdivision home victory and remained undefeated and on top of the American Division. |
High School Ice Hockey: Friday, October 3, 2003 By Mike Costantino Gary Scott and Lanny Frederick netted hat tricks as Timber Creek defeated Cinnaminson 9-7 at Hollydell on Friday night. After joining the league last year and playing all of its games at Tier 2, Timber Creek entered the season finding themselves moving up to Tier 1 and opening against a very well coached and disciplined team in Cinnaminson. Returning several key players from last year, Frederick, Ray Zola and Matt Carpenter, Timber Creek will score some goals, and will win some high scoring contests. Carpenter opened the scoring; depositing home a rebound after Zola was stopped on a breakaway. Cinnaminson tied the game at 1-1, with the first of its four power play goals as Longo, who led the Pirate attack with two goals, found the back of the net. |
High School Ice Hockey: Friday, October 3, 2003 By Mike Costantino Fred Brewer, Chris Keyser and Nino Camaratta scored two goals each as Washington Township began its SJHSIHL season with a 9-1 victory over Holy Cross. Welcoming a new head coach, the Minutemen took no prisoners. They utilized their speed on all three lines and were missing one of their top players from last year in Drew Peterson who should be available for the next league game. Pete Laman, Josh Courant and Kyle Stokes also scored for Township. Gerner scored the lone goal for Holy Cross. |
Ice Hockey Spotlight: Friday, October 3, 2003 By Al Cohen Ian MacNeil and Ben Stafford each scored twice and rookie Nick Deschenes recorded four points as the Philadelphia Phantoms surprised their parent club, the Philadelphia Flyers, 10-6 tonight at the Wachovia Spectrum. |
High School Field Hockey: Thursday, October 2, 2003 By Susan Hall What a difference a year makes for the Lady Cougars field hockey team from Cherry Hill West high school. Camden Catholic and Bishop Eustace from the start of a season have primarily dominated the Olympic Conference National division. This year, the Cougars are right in the thick of things and look to make a run at capturing the title. West jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first half and cruised to a 4-1 victory against Camden Catholic. Marissa Wisniewski scored a goal in each half to lead the Cougars. |
High School Soccer: Tuesday, September 30, 2003 By Jerome MichaelsSJSports Special Correspondent The top of the Olympic Conference National Division has become a wide-open race between Paul VI, Timber Creek and Bishop Eustace. Each has played one another with the exception of Paul VI matching up with Timber Creek. The Eagles from Paul VI were hosting the Crusaders from Bishop Eustace and were looking to pick up their fourth win of the season. Paul VI scored all of the goals of the game in the first half and it was enough to get by the Crusaders. |
High School Soccer: Monday, September 29, 2003 By Jerome MichaelsSJSports Special Correspondent During the first half of this game, you could feel the intensity from both teams that this was a very important boy’s soccer game. It was a match up against the top two teams from the Colonial Conference Liberty Division. The Sterling Silver Knights were playing host to the undefeated Bulldogs from Haddonfield. This game would come down to a late goal by Greg Maiatico just under two minutes remaining in the game. Both teams played well, but it was Haddonfield who would extend their record to 6-0. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, September 29, 2003 By Mike Costantino It’s that time once again, to root for your favorite team, cheer for your favorite player and be kind to all the officials. The 2003-2004 South Jersey High School Ice Hockey League opened at the Skate Zone on Monday as the defending league champion Eastern Vikings barely survived against Cherry Hill East winning 3-2. Brandon Tunstill scored a short-handed goal midway through the third period, snapping a 2-2 tie. Eastern graduated just two players from last year’s championship team and should contend once again this year as they have the best goalie in the league in Dan Myers and top scorers Anthony Orner and Sean Sullivan. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, September 29, 2003 By Mike Costantino Patrick McMahon scored two goals and Cherokee launched fifty-two shots on net as the Chiefs defeated Paul VI 7-5, in the season opener for both teams. Cherokee dominated the first period getting goals from Kevin Magnin, Dan Altieri and McMahon while putting twenty-one shots on net. Paul VI goalie Eric Lake picked up where he left off last year and was awesome in nets. Bret Falco scored the lone goal in the period for the Eagles on the power play, as the offense was only able to generate four shots in the opening period. The second period featured numerous penalties and seemed to go on forever and Cherokee jumped ahead 5-1 on goals from McMahon and Burro. |
