Patrick McMahon scored two goals and Cherokee launched fifty-two shots on net as the Chiefs defeated Paul VI 7-5, in the season opener for both teams. Cherokee dominated the first period getting goals from Kevin Magnin, Dan Altieri and McMahon while putting twenty-one shots on net. Paul VI goalie Eric Lake picked up where he left off last year and was awesome in nets. Bret Falco scored the lone goal in the period for the Eagles on the power play, as the offense was only able to generate four shots in the opening period. The second period featured numerous penalties and seemed to go on forever and Cherokee jumped ahead 5-1 on goals from McMahon and Burro.
Booth cut the lead to 5-2 for Paul VI, while Lake continued to stop everything, waiting for his offense to arrive, Momentum seemed to switch as Cherokee mishandled the puck in front of their own net and a defenseman knocked the puck into the net. Mike DiGennaro was credited with the goal and suddenly it was 5-3. Moments later, with a two-man-advantage, Peter Antinore brought the Eagles to 5-4 and the never quit attitude that carried them in the tournament last year was now exploding on the ice as we headed into the third period. Cherokee responded as Mike Garofolo scored to put the Chiefs up 6-4. Falco got that one back scoring his second goal on the power play and the lead was down to 6-5. McMahon sealed the game scoring a breakaway goal with under five minutes left.
