South Jersey Baseball and Softball: Saturday, April 24, 1999
By Boog Williams
On Saturday, the Berlin Township Athletic Association opened their season of baseball and softball. The rain from the night before pushed opening day games back one hour on two of the three fields, and 2 1/2 hours on the major league field. The coaches and AA members worked to get the fields ready for play. The day was sunny, but breezy, as the players, parents, families, and friends made their way to the fields at the John F. Kennedy school in West Berlin.

"Guess better late than never" was the term spoken when the Moorestown baseball tournament championship game was played late Saturday night. The tournament included the teams from Princeton, Riverside, Haddonfield and Moorestown. The championship game wasn't played until the wee hours of the night under the lights. When the lights were finally turned off, it would be the Quakers taking their own tournament by defeating the Haddonfield Bulldogs 8-2 and finally going home.

The first round of play for the Moorestown baseball tournament was originally scheduled for Friday, but rain forced all games to be played on Saturday. The Riverside Rams and Haddonfield Bulldogs got things started in a dramatic way. The Rams are known for getting the early lead on their opponents and coasting to the victory. The Bulldogs stole their script and jumped out to a 14-0 lead and held off the charging Rams 14-13.

What a glorious day to play softball. Opening day for the BTAA turned out to be a perfect sun filled day. A day that saw two girls rookie softball teams of players between the ages of 7 and 8 meet, some playing for the first time. A day filled with fun, laughter, and of course some good pitching, hitting, and running. Team Sundae Drivers played Berlin Township Team 2. The final score was 9-8 in favor of Township Team 2.

The softball gods must have been waiting for this day to come. It was a beautiful day, with the temperature in the 70's and the sun shining. The game is in a girl's instructional softball league. Most of these players are playing softball for the first time. All girls are the ages of 7 or 8. The girls pitch, and balls and strikes are called by an umpire, but they cannot walk a run home.

High School Lacrosse: Monday, April 19, 1999

When the Lady Quaker's of Moorestown visited the Lady Renegades of Shawnee on Monday, the game had a playoff feel to it, with a lot of electricity in the air. Maybe it was because the last time the two teams met was in last year's state championship, when Shawnee came away with a 10-6 victory. Shawnee was also riding a 14 game unbeaten streak going back to last season. Many people felt that whoever won this game would most likely be the winner of this year's state championship.
