Tennis Spotlight: Saturday, April 21, 2007 By Bob Heller The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's tennis team ran their winning streak to five consecutive games with a 9-0 victory over Bloomfield College Saturday afternoon at the tennis courts at McNeill Field Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Devils record to 10-2 overall. Their 10 wins are the most in a season since the 2000 season when the Devils went 10-4. The Devils swept through the doubles matches to take an early three point lead in the match. Paul Caceres and Ryan Pell shutout Matt Dutch and Jon Torres, 8-0 to win their number two doubles match while Ken Connelly and Dan Rubin defeated Bernardo Aviles and Hector Rodriguez at number three doubles by the same 8-0 score. Tyler Weisel and Ricardo Martins completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win over Bhaumik Patel and Danny Terrell at number one doubles. |
Tennis Spotlight: Wednesday, April 18, 2007 By Bob Heller Millersville University became the eighth team defeated by the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's tennis team yesterday afternoon as the Devils, on the strength of their singles play, handed the Marauders just their second loss of the spring season, a 6-3 defeat in Millersville, Pennsylvania. The Devils improve to 8-2 overall. Millersville falls to 4-2. The Devils took two out of the three doubles matches with Tyler Weisel and Ricardo Martins teaming up to earn an 8-2 pro-set win over Greg Bennett and Chris Paolini at number one doubles. Roberto Franco and Dan Rubin defeated Mark Trieres and Scott Smith, 8-6 at number three doubles for USP's second point of the afternoon. Paul Caceres and Ken Connelly fell to Chris Matisse and Jim Trieres at number two doubles, 8-2. |
Tennis Spotlight: Saturday, October 21, 2006 By Bob Heller Amanda Bedway and Sarah Leonard each won their opening match at the CACC Individual Tournament Championship before losing in the quarterfinals at the Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis Center in Philadelphia yesterday afternoon. USP's women's tennis team was also awarded the CACC Team Sportsmanship Award in balloting done by the league's seven coaches. Bedway and Leonard started the day by teaming up for the doubles competition. The Devils #1 doubles team opened the competition with tough match against Beka Elliott and Lori Pick of Philadelphia University, winning 9-8 (9-7). Bedway and Leonard then fell to the top doubles team in the tournament, Lauren Neill and Rupali Parekh of Holy Family University, 8-3. Parekh and Neill later advanced to the championship match. |
Tennis Spotlight: Monday, October 9, 2006 By Bob Heller The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's tennis team secured a playoff berth in the upcoming Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championships with a pair of wins over conference opponents Sunday and this afternoon. On Sunday, the Devils defeated Caldwell College, 7-2. USP followed that win with a 9-0 shutout of Post University to finish the conference play with a 3-3 record, clinching the fourth and final playoff spot in the championships which will be held this weekend. Overall, the Devils improve to 4-6. The Devils entered Sunday's match needing a win to clinch at least a tie for the final playoff. USP did just that, sweeping the doubles matches against Caldwell College and taking four of the six singles matches for the 7-2 win. |
Tennis Spotlight: Friday, September 29, 2006 By Bob Heller The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's tennis team won their second straight match of the season yesterday with an 8-1 victory at West Chester University. USP improves to 2-0 with the win while West Chester falls to 0-2. The Devils started off the match by capturing all three doubles matches. Tyler Weisel and Paul Caceres defeated Chip Diem and Andrew Pollack at number one doubles 8-4 while Roberto Franco and Ricardo Martins defeated Michael Mulholland and Peter Braun by an identical 8-4 score at number two doubles. Completing the doubles sweep were Ryan Pell and Dan Rubin, who captured the number three doubles match with an 8-0 win over Geoffrey Brockman and Anthony Pugliese. |
Tennis Spotlight: Wednesday, September 27, 2006 By Bob Heller The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's tennis team earned their first win of the 2006 season this afternoon, defeating Goldey Beacom College, 9-0. The win was also their first conference win of the season and improves the Devils record to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). The Devils started the match with a 2-0 lead as the Lightning's sixth player was sidelined with an injury, leading to default wins at number three doubles and number six singles. |
Tennis Spotlight: Monday, September 11, 2006 By Bob Heller University of the Sciences in Philadelphia’s Amanda Bedway (Blue Mountain HS/Orwigsburg, PA) was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for the week ending September 10, 2006. Bedway opened the 2006 season with a perfect week, winning both her matches at #1 singles and both matches at #1 doubles. Starting the week on Wednesday against Arcadia University, Amanda teamed up with Sarah Leonard to record an 8-0 win at #1 doubles. Remaining perfect on the day, Bedway recorded a 6-0, 6-0 straight set win over Arcadia’s Cory Mazen at #1 singles. |

The match was also the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opener for both teams. The Devils fall to 0-2 on the season and 0-1 in conference play. Amanda Bedway (Jr., Blue Mountain HS/Orwigsburg, PA) continued her solid play, earning a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Katie Stracquintino at #1 singles. Bedway also teamed up with Sarah Leonard (So., West Chester East HS/West Chester, PA) to earn USP's only other point of the match, an 8-4 #1 doubles victory over Maddie Smith and Trish Ubil. |
Tennis Spotlight: Friday, May 5, 2006 By Bob Heller The Bloomsburg University women's tennis team advanced to tomorrow's NCAA East Regional Final by defeating the University of Sciences in Philadelphia, 5-0, at Bloomsburg University on Thursday afternoon. Bloomsburg jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage after doubles play. Amanda Bedway and Sarah Leonard dropped their #1 doubles match to Iida Hokkanen and Torie Cunningham ,8-1 while Bloomsburg's Lindsey Wyckoff and Emily Murphy defeated Gabrielle Exler and Christina Sebastiani 8-1 at number two doubles. Michelle Inzillo and Rachel Salahub lost to Tracy Nissenbaum and Lauren Colfer 8-2 at number three doubles. |
Tennis Spotlight: Thursday, April 27, 2006 By Bob Heller The NCAA announced the pairings yesterday for the Division II Women's Tennis Championships which will start on May 4, 2006 at institutional sites and continue in Kansas City, Missouri with the round of 16 on May 10. The national championship match will be held at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City on May 13, 2006. The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships by winning the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference title in October 2005. The Devils will be the #8 seed competing in the East Region and will face host Bloomsburg University, the region's #1 seed on Thursday, May 4, 2006. |
Tennis Spotlight: Wednesday, March 16, 2005 By Bob Heller The USP men's tennis team started their spring season off right, recording a near sweep of Arcadia University, 7-1 yesterday. USP swept all three doubles matches and captured four of the six singles contests en route to the win to improve to 2-1 overall. Tyler Weisel and Olufemi Ogunkorode cruised to an 8-1 win over Tim Fitzgerald and Nick Cocco at #1 doubles while Roberto Franco and Dave Sen scored an 8-2 pro-set win over Dan Bradley and Manuel Olaciregvi. Ryan Pell and Daniel Lewycky rounded out the doubles winners with a 9-7 win over Tom Fries and Matt Rogers. |
