Tennis Spotlight: Friday, September 29, 2006 By Bob Heller The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's tennis team won their second straight match of the season yesterday with an 8-1 victory at West Chester University. USP improves to 2-0 with the win while West Chester falls to 0-2. The Devils started off the match by capturing all three doubles matches. Tyler Weisel (Jr., Greater Latrobe Sr. HS/Greensburg, PA) and Paul Caceres (So., Bergen Catholic/ Teaneck, NJ) defeated Chip Diem and Andrew Pollack at number one doubles 8-4 while Roberto Franco (Sr., Abraham Lincoln HS/Lima, Peru) and Ricardo Martins (Fr., Idegio Pentagono/Sao Paulo, Brazil) defeated Michael Mulholland and Peter Braun by an identical 8-4 score at number two doubles. Completing the doubles sweep were Ryan Pell (Jr., West York Area HS/York, PA) and Dan Rubin (Fr., Neshaminy HS/Langhorne, PA), who captured the number three doubles match with an 8-0 win over Geoffrey Brockman and Anthony Pugliese. Weisel easily captured the number one singles match with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Diem while Caceres recorded a 6-4, 6-2 win at number two singles over Pollack. Franco, Martins and Rubin also recorded singles wins to give the Devils five singles victories in six matches. Franco defeated Mulholland 6-2, 6-1 at number three singles while Martins defeated Pugliese 6-1, 7-5 at the number four spot. Rubin rounded out the USP winners with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Andrew Racilla at number six singles. West Chester's only point of the match came at number five singles as Braun defeated Pell, 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8). The Devils will be competing this weekend at the ITA Regional Tournament held at Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. |
