South Jersey Softball: Thursday, July 17, 2003 By Jim Law Thursday evening the local West Berlin Fire and Rescue Squads met the Philadelphia Flyers/Phantoms in the second annual fund raising softball game. If you remember the game last year, the locals prevailed in a home run derby with a final score of 34 to 33 West Berlin win. Although the Flyers/Phantoms held down the score this year they were equally impressive in a 22-20 loss. |
South Jersey Softball: Tuesday, June 10, 2003 By Patricia Snyder The Pennsauken travel team, better known as the RED’S, are coached by Brian Robey, and assistant coach Patrick Spencer. The newly formed 2003 travel team made up of girls, 10 years and younger, continues to improve and wow the crowds with their own unique style of play. Although the girls did not win every game this season, they are winners in their hearts and sprit. Coach Robey and Spencer with their firm and fun ways of coaching, have a way of bringing the very best out of each girl. Although Coach Robey knows the girls cannot win every game, he fills his mouth with sun flower seeds, takes a knee in the dugout and tells the girls to hang in there until the very end. He begins each game by passing them a sign and telling the girls, “now go out and play ball.” |
High School Softball: Thursday, May 29, 2003 By Crystal Parker Dramatic finishes tend to stick around in our minds for quite some time. Most of us have imagined being put in a situation to win a big game for their team, especially during the playoffs. Well the stage was set for the Lady Chiefs' softball team as for six full innings they could not score a single run against Rancocas Valley's Lisa Sweeney. Cherokee's bat finally came alive during their last at bat and scored the decisive run when Jackie Taylor's single scored Tina Roth for the 3-2 come from behind victory. |
High School Softball: Tuesday, May 27, 2003 By Crystal Parker Starting pitcher Sam Elder for Gloucester did not like what see was seeing early on in this semifinal softball game against New Egypt. The Lady Warriors were able to come through with some big hits as they have been doing all season long. The third seeded New Egypt softball team traveled to the second seeded Lady Lions from Gloucester competing for the chance to claim the South Jersey Group 1 title. Elder would soon settle down and keep this game close. After trailing for most of this game, the Lions bats finally came alive in dramatic fashion winning this game in extra innings by downing New Egypt 5-4. |
High School Softball: Tuesday, May 27, 2003 By Susan Hall The area’s group championship was coming to an end with Rancocas Valley and Toms River North looking to advance to the South Jersey Group 4 game. Both of these teams fought their way to this game and neither wanted their season to be over. Now looking back on this game, it was over right at the start. Only three runs were scored in the first inning and that’s all Rancocas Valley needed to win this game. Starting pitcher Lisa Sweeney took over from there, only allowing three hits to lead the Red Devils to the 3-0 win. |
High School Softball: Thursday, May 22, 2003 By Susan Hall The scorekeeper for the Hammonton softball finally got to fill in the diamonds indicating their team was scoring runs. Traveling to Audubon wasn't an easy task, as the Blue Devils were taking on the seconded seeded team in their South Jersey Group II quarterfinal game. Hammonton sent fourteen batters to the plate during their six run fifth inning explosion to break a close game open. Hammonton took advantage of several bases loaded walks that allowed them to move on to the semifinals with their 7-4 victory. |
High School Softball: Tuesday, May 20, 2003 By Susan Hall For seven full innings, the starting pitchers for Sterling and Point Pleasant Boro were in control of this game. It was the first round of the South Jersey Group 2 softball playoffs that featured the closely match eighth seeded Lady Knights from Sterling hosting the ninth seeded Point Pleasant Boro Panthers. Both Erin Boyle and Stephanie Skroski were keeping the opposing batters off the base and scoreboard. The final and decisive run occurred when Boyle took matters in her own hands...or bat. Her solo home run in the eighth inning gave Boro the rights to move on to the next round. |
High School Softball: Thursday, May 8, 2003 By Crystal Parker These two teams met earlier in the season with Haddon Township coming away with the victory against Haddon Heights. The second time around always helps a team to get use to the pitcher and team they are going up against. Both teams were successful getting the ball on the bat and scoring runs in this Colonial Conference match up at Haddon Township High School. Heights would hold an early lead, but the bats would come alive for Township as they stormed past the Lady Garnets by a 14-9 margin. |
High School Softball: Wednesday, May 7, 2003 By Susan Hall Leading a division is never an easy task as opposing teams sometimes have a higher emotional edge going into a big game. Pennsville had a two game lead over Gloucester City High School in the Tri-County Conference Classic Division. The Lady Eagles were looking to get back on a winning streak they had established early this season. But the momentum was definitely in Gloucester's favor as they were able to score three runs in the sixth inning. With their 3-1 win, the Lady Lions moved one step closer with the regular season winding down. |
High School Softball: Tuesday, May 6, 2003 By Crystal Parker It seemed as if this game would never end with both opposing pitchers having their way through seven innings. Pennsville’s Jaime Carlson and Gloucester Catholic’s Brianne Tobin were able to maintain a scoreless tie up until the ninth inning when finally someone scored that illusive winning run. With Linda Hahn at third base and one out, Gloucester Catholic’s Desiree Wilson laid down a suicide squeeze bunt towards the mound. Hahn would slide in safely scoring the eventually game winning run. The Rams would tack on a few more runs to preserve their 4-0 victory. |
High School Softball: Friday, May 2, 2003 By Susan Hall With the changing of the season, Paul VI and Timber Creek has reversed their roles from last year. The Lady Eagles were the ones leading the pack from the Olympic Conference with Timber Creek chasing them. The Chargers are now the ones in front of all opponents from the National Division early on this season. Allison Lang was the leader at the plate during this game as Timber Creek easily defeated Paul VI by a 9-1 score. Stacy Warren picked up the win for the Chargers. |
High School Softball: Wednesday, April 30, 2003 By Crystal Parker So far this season, one of the softball teams from Audubon and Sterling high school has taken total control of their abilities to play as a unit to achieve their objectives. With seven of their ten game winning streak, the ladies from Audubon has shut down their opponents’ offense holding them scoreless. Sterling would not be another statistic to the Green Wave’s shutout success as they were able to tie this game at one all after two innings. But Amanda Brown would come through with the game winning hit for Audubon to extend their winning streak to ten games with their 5-1 victory against Sterling. |
High School Softball: Monday, April 28, 2003 By Susan Hall Neither team could decide who would be the winning after seven full innings of softball was played at Camden Catholic High School. Bishop Eustace’s Megan Farrell and the Irish’s Anna Dahl were the starting pitchers in this Olympic Conference National Division softball game. After neither team would be able to take advantage of few runners in scoring position, the game would remain scoreless through eight innings. Finally, with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Dahl would crush a Farrell pitch over the fence for the 2-0 victory. |
High School Softball: Thursday, April 24, 2003 By Susan Hall Paul VI was looking to end a five game winless streak. The Lady Eagles suffered a one run loss to Kingsway in a non-league game. Holy Cross also recently felt the jaws of defeat losing a 1-0 game against Deptford. In another non-league competition on their schedule, one of these teams finally was on the winning side of a close game. Kristie Gola would pitch a shutout for the Lancers and defeat Paul VI 2-0. Alaina Giles would come through with the big hit in the sixth inning. |
High School Softball: Wednesday, April 16, 2003 By Susan Hall Two talented pitchers went head to head this afternoon at Deptford High School. It was a match-up against the Lady Spartans hosting Gloucester Catholic. These Tri-County Conference Royal Division opponents featured Brianne Tobin for the Lady Rams going up against Nicole Ayers. Both have been very successful early on this season. On this day, Tobin strikeout 14 batters and Gloucester Catholic went on to defeat Deptford by a 6-1 margin. The lone run for the Spartans came off the bat of Ayers. |
High School Softball: Wednesday, April 16, 2003 By Crystal Parker Finally, a softball game was being played. The Lady Renegades were up against their rivals from Olympic Conference American Division, the Lady Chiefs from Cherokee. Slated as the team to beat this season, the Chiefs added on to an early one run lead to hand Shawnee their first loss of the season. Starting pitcher Danielle Cohen had a shutout going up until the last inning, but that was spoiled during Shawnee’s last turn at bat for the game. Cherokee would remain undefeated with their 3-1 victory. |
High School Softball: Audubon Remains Perfect With Shutout Over Gateway Friday, April 4, 2003 By Susan Hall It sure did not feel like its time for softball, let alone any spring sports with the temperatures pushing close to the freezing point. When your team is winning games, sometimes it does not matter how cold it is. Audubon has been the team keeping warm, as they have won their first 3 games this season. The Green Wave scored some late insurance runs to defeat Gateway 6-0 in a Colonial Conference game. |
