South Jersey Baseball: Sunday, July 4, 2004 By Chuck Betson The Atlantic City Surf hit three home runs to win 4-1 and complete the sweep of the Camden Riversharks at Sandcastle Stadium Sunday night. The two teams were tied for first in the standings before the Surf won both games 4-1, in front of 4,275 Surf fans. In the first game the Surf’s four run third inning provided starter Ray Davis all the offense he would need to record his second win of the season. After RBI singles by second baseman Demetrius Heath and shortstop Raul Marval, first baseman Ozzie Timmons connected for this thirteenth homer of the season and the two RBI gives him a league leading fifty-three. Davis allowed only three hits and one run in his seven inning complete game. |
South Jersey Soccer: Sunday, July 4, 2004 By John Thompson The South Jersey Barons were in sensational form on Sunday night against D3 pro side Northern Virginia. The Barons played some of the best soccer of the season as they created chances at will. The Barons dominated the first half in possession and in chances. In the 27th minute Ruben Mingo scored his 12th of the season as he lobbed the goalie from 30 yards out. Two minutes later the Barons stretched there lead to two when Brian Devlin struck with a looping header from a Tony Donatelli cross. |
South Jersey Baseball: Sunday, July 4, 2004 By Chuck Betson After the first game of their doubleheader the Atlantic City Surf find themselves in sole possession of first place, at least for a couple of hours, after a 4-1 win over the Camden Riversharks at Sandcastle Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Surf and Riversharks entered the game tied for first place and fighting for the first half’s division title and bid to the playoffs at the end of the season. |
South Jersey Soccer: Saturday, July 3, 2004 By John Thompson The South Jersey Barons beat the defending national champions Cape Cod at home on Saturday night in a close game between two quality teams. The crowd were entertained with some excellent passing in what was an open game considering these two teams have shown they are solid defensive units. The Barons struck first when David Daigle beat David Mahoney from 25 yards out on the 25 minute mark. Daigle was getting forward well from his left back role and came close several times prior to his goal. |
South Jersey Baseball: Saturday, July 3, 2004 By Dan Loney The Trenton Thunder, the Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, welcomed 4,512 spectators to Waterfront Park for the first-of-its-kind PSE&G “No Game Night” and City of Trenton Independence Day Fireworks on Saturday night in Trenton. The Trenton Thunder, the City of Trenton and PSE&G raised $11,512 for the Grand Slam We Care Foundation through this event. |
South Jersey Baseball: Friday, July 2, 2004 By Chuck Betson The Surf hit four home runs avenging their loss the night before as they defeated the Pennsylvania Road Warriors 17-3 at Sandcastle Stadium Friday night. The Surf received strong pitching and timely hitting as they scored seventeen runs on twelve hits while receiving eight innings from starter Kyle Goldwater. Goldwater received plenty of run support from the beginning. The Surf scored in six of eight innings. Outfielders Ozzie Timmons, Wil Quantana, third baseman Ryan Minor, and first baseman Dario Delgado all hit the long ball. Minor’s was of the grand slam variety to plate four of his five RBI. |

Arena Football: Thursday, July 1, 2004 By Matthew Gionta With a spot in the National Indoor Football League playoffs on the line for the CardSharks, they travel down to Florence, South Carolina to face the Rays for the second time in three weeks. The teams met in week 15, with the CardSharks (8-5) defeating the hosting Rays (5-6), by a score of 46-35. The ‘Sharks are coming off a season sweep of the Staten Island Xtreme, as they won 39-6 in their final home game at Boardwalk Hall last Saturday. The Rays traveled to Fort Wayne, IN and lost 48-3 in front of the biggest crowd in NIFL history. |
South Jersey Baseball: Thursday, July 1, 2004 By Chuck Betson The Pennsylvania Road Warriors came one game shy of tying the Atlantic League record for futility as they defeated the Atlantic City Surf Thursday night at Sandcastle Stadium, 5-1. The Surf came into the game in a three way tie for first place while the Warriors had lost twenty straight, dating back to their June 9th game against Newark. Warriors designated hitter Guy Lynam led the way with four hits while driving in a run. First baseman Brady Williams also helped the Warriors effort with two RBI singles. Starter Luis Arroyo went the distance to pick up the win. He gave up one run on seven hits while striking out eight. |
South Jersey Baseball: Wednesday, June 30, 2004 By Dan Loney The Eastern League and the Trenton Thunder, Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, announced today that IF Aaron Rifkin, RHP David Shepard, OF Kevin Reese and RHP Javier Ortiz have been named to the Northern Division Team for the Eastern League All-Star game to be played in Bowie, MD on July 14th. Two players from each Eastern League team were chosen through voting by fans at ballparks and Rite Aid stores in the region. The remaining players were chosen by the Eastern League President’s office. For the Thunder, Aaron Rifkin and David Shepard earned the fan votes while Kevin Reese and Javier Ortiz were chosen by the league office. |

South Jersey Soccer: Monday, June 28, 2004 By John Thompson The South Jersey Barons took sole possession of the Northeast Conference lead this weekend by beating second placed team Albany 2-0. Both teams were tied on 23 points prior to the game. The Barons recorded their third clean sheet in a row the following evening with a 3-0 win at the Vermont Voltage. The Barons are now three points clear of Albany with two games in hand over them. These two solid wins were important steps toward getting in the play-offs. |

LHP Tim Adkins, C David Parrish and INF Caonoba Cosme have been sent from Columbus to Trenton. LHP Scott Wiggins has been released by the Yankees organization. |

The senior tournament is directed by head coach Norm Waters and first base coach Mike Martino. The senior tournament teams range in age from 14 and under. With a brilliant display of talent and excellent showmanship, the girls showed themselves as true ball players. |
