South Jersey Baseball: Sunday, July 4, 2004 By Chuck Betson The Atlantic City Surf hit three home runs to win 4-1 and complete the sweep of the Camden Riversharks at Sandcastle Stadium Sunday night. The two teams were tied for first in the standings before the Surf won both games 4-1, in front of 4,275 Surf fans. In the first game the Surf’s four run third inning provided starter Ray Davis all the offense he would need to record his second win of the season. After RBI singles by second baseman Demetrius Heath and shortstop Raul Marval, first baseman Ozzie Timmons connected for this thirteenth homer of the season and the two RBI gives him a league leading fifty-three. Davis allowed only three hits and one run in his seven inning complete game. The only run the Riversharks scored came on a harmless solo shot by catcher Travis Anderson in the fifth. It was Anderson’s first homer of the season. Riversharks starter Ben Simon pitched well but suffered the loss, allowing only five hits but four runs. He also struck out six. In the nightcap the Surf received back-to-back solo homeruns from third baseman Ryan Minor and first baseman Dario Delgado in the second inning to erase the Riversharks 1-0 lead. For both players it was the thirteenth homer. Second baseman Raul Marval added two insurance runs with a two-run shot in the third. Anthony Chavez went seven innings allowing only one unearned run on two hits in his first outing of the season. The Riversharks received their lone run when first baseman Ryan Jones drove in shortstop Travis Rodriguez in the first. Starter Ryan Schurman suffered the loss, his fourth loss. He threw all six innings, giving up the four runs on seven hits. The two teams will have off tomorrow before squaring off again Tuesday morning. Game time is scheduled for 11:05 am for Kids Camp Special Day. The Surf will throw Mark Brownson against Lincoln Mikkelsen. |
